We waited until the opening weekend was over, and treated ourselves to a morning viewing of the latest Fantastic Beasts movie at the IMAX. Go big or go home!
To be honest, the first 30 minutes was so slow that the after-effects of a Xanax I took last night made it hard for me to keep my eyes open. Mr. AZC had the same problem, and he didn't have any Xanax.
And then it got good.
And then it got better. (Jude Law is H-A-W-T as Dumbledore.)
And then the last 10 minutes were unbelievable. No spoilers from me . . . but WOW.
One word of advice. You really MUST see the first Fantastic Beasts movie before you see this one, or you will be completely lost.

I would have gone to see it again in the theater before it goes to DVD, but we both found the dialogue to be muddy in a few places, so we're gonna wait until it comes out on DVD so we can turn on the closed captioning. I'm sure I missed several important plot points because I couldn't hear them.

Finally! Loved it. Wow- Nagini has a backstory and what a reveal at the end!
One thing that bothered me besides Jacob's love turning sides, was that when the group was on the bridge in the last scene, yes, it made sense for Newt to speak alone with Dumbledore, but why didn't Dumbledore invite everyone in for tea rather than just Newt? That seemed awkward...plus we would see Jacob's reaction to Hogwarts. So much more could have been done there to fill out the relationships.

Yeah, so I watched this on HBO and I can see why this movie didn't do as well as the first. Besides having none of the charm of the original, Depp looks like he has at least twenty years on Jude Law's Dumbledore and since they are supposed to be contemporaries it really isn't a good look. I really wish they brought back Colin Farrell because Depp's gotten to the point that he plays the same characters over and over again. Every now and then you would see a spark of brilliance in his performance, only for it to go away.
I can understand Queenie's motivation but don't agree with it. Lestrange was motivated by love but yeah...didn't appreciate what happened to her either. And the big reveal at the end made no sense whatsoever if you're well versed in HP lore; not fond of things that are already canon being changed. Loved the creatures (especially the Chinese fire dragon) and Dumbledore, Clarence and Najini were highlights of this mess along with the set designs for the Wizard Circus and the Parisian wizard zone because those looked amazing. I've heard that they are rethinking the picture count on this (5 were originally planned) but I think that's the least of their problems. Hire a director and writer who has actually read the books, get Farrell back, and maybe only have 3 movies in this series.

Johnny Depp is out as Grindelwald
Johnny Depp will no longer portray the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” film franchise, the actor announced Friday.
“I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I have respected and agreed to that request,” he wrote Friday on Instagram.
Depp’s exit from the “Harry Potter” spinoff series comes days after he lost his libel case against The Sun, a British tabloid that published an article in 2018 alleging he was a “wife beater.” Depp said he plans to appeal the ruling.
Warner Bros. confirmed Depp’s departure and announced his role will be recast before the third installment opens in theaters. The studio also pushed back the release date for the upcoming entry, which was originally set for November 2021. It will now premiere in the summer of 2022.
“Johnny Depp will depart the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said. “‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”
The prequel series, set decades before the adventures of everyone’s favorite bespectacled boy wizard, is intended to be a five-film franchise. Depp, who briefly appeared at end of 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” returned in a more prominent role for 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” Depp’s casting has been controversial from the start due to domestic violence allegations that his ex-wife Amber Heard leveled against the star. Despite public outcry from fans, author J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. vehemently defended the decision to stick with Depp at the time.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was commercial successful, generating more than $800 million at the global box office. Yet the series appears to already be experiencing diminishing returns. The sequel grossed $654 million worldwide, the lowest ticket sales for a movie based on Rowling’s wizard lore.
In Friday’s statement, Depp thanked fans for their “support and loyalty.” “I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days,” he said.
“The surreal judgement of the court in the U.K. will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal,” he concluded. “My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.”

I like Colin better anyway; hopefully they can get him back. Between Johnyy's legal woes, JK Rowling's disgusting comments on twitter, and Ezra Miller almost choking a girl out at a con something had to give and it was him. Between his legal woes and being difficult on set (rumored) it probably was an easy decision. The sad thing is it's partially his own fault; if he had left his ex alone after the divorce instead of going scorched earth and obsessed with smearing her he probably would have been okay.

IMO, Depp's ex is bonkers. She put him through a lot.

What's bonkers is getting caught telling one of your best mates you want to murder your (back then) soon to be ex in horrible ways. Personally, I believe they were both abusive and horrible both to and for each other but the fact that he refuses to let go after all this time and continues to try to smear her while she's said nothing since the divorce speaks volumes, as the courts deciding that he was abusive based on the material that HIS TEAM provided. The whole situation reminds me of my abusive ex recently coming by my building (which I did NOT give him the address for) a couple of weeks ago with a "friend" to stare down my now partner who was out walking the dog in the park at the time, and it's been 20 years since I've talked to the creep. Some people just won't let go, and it's always to their own detriment eventually.

Mads Mikkelson from Hannibal is taking over the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the next movie. Now this is a casting I can get behind. He's sexy, has chemistry with everyone, and is a fine actor. Hopefully they can get a new scriptwriter as well because the Crimes of Grindelwald was a mess.
