Fun fact to know I was curious as to how long the filming was and if folks were flying back and forth to the states.

Season 4 Episode 5 - Semi finals - December 20, 2018 Baker | Signature Challenge | Technical Challenge | Showstopper | | Pot de creme | Princess Cake | Gingerbread House | Amanda | No Ordinary Orange Pot de Creme | 1st | Lake Tahoe Log Cabin | Andrea | Christmas Time Custard | 4th | Home for the Holidays | Destane | Butterscotch Pot de Creme | 3rd | Winter Wonderland at Grandma's | Jiwan | Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Pot de Creme | 5th | Winter Castle | Tina | Goat Cheese & Fig Pot de Creme | 2nd | Winter Woodland Wonderland |
All had issues during the signature bake but Destane's pot de creme was not cooked. Jiwan's flavors should have worked together but didn't. The technical was a bit of a mess for everyone. The showstopper was interesting in regards to seeing folks strategy. Tina's birdhouse was small and simple but beautifully finished. All the additional decorative bits were finished and done well. It looked picture perfect. Jiwan's castle was not finished. He was trying to do too many pieces. He didn't complete a stained glass window in the castles chapel. It looked unfinished. Destane did not complete the brief she gave the judges, her grandma's house had two bell towers and she only build one. Both Andrea and Amanda completed their houses and they had decorative bits and the design looked good. Andrea saved herself with the showstopper and Destane and Jiwan did not. It was a double elimination and poor Destane and Jiwan were eliminated. Tina was Star Baker.

Season 4 Episode 6 - Finals - December 20, 2018 Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper |
| 12 Cannoli | Baumkuchen | 3 tier celebration cake with a crunch element | Amanda | You and Me Cannoli | 1st | Tahoe Forest Cake | Andrea | Upstate New York Cannoli | 3rd | Christmas Celebration Cake | Tina | Traditional Cannoli Siciliano | 2nd | Festive Christmas Cake |
Signature Challenge - everyone seemed to do well with one or two bits off. Andrea's cannoli were to thin, Tina overlapped hers too much and there was an uncooked bit. Seemed as if Amanda was in the lead. Technical Challenge - Andrea can't do math and was pouring 150 grams of batter in the beginning while the others were pouring 43 to 47 grams of batter for each layer. Andrea realized that she had don't her math wrong about a third of the way in. Also all three ladies whipped their egg whites differently and that affected the density of the batter. Paul and Sherry state that it is neck and neck at this point and that whoever wins the showstopper will win the bakeoff. Andrea - beautifully designed, tastes good, but Paul states it is very sweet, for kids. Crunchy element snickerdoodle cookies. Red Velvet with cheesecake buttercream - Sherry states is excellent. Amanda - design is gorgeous. Top tier - vanilla sponge (?) with crunchy element of honey comb. The honey comb flavor is lost and does not stand out. Other tier - chocolate with cherry - both Paul and Sherry like. At this point I really thought Amanda had won as she seems to been so good at the semi finals and here. Tina - Paul says the design is busy, but appreciates she is celebrating the Italian theme inside and out. One tier is red, green, white representing the Italian flag. The apricot buttercream needed more bite. The other tier is chocolate and espresso and done well. It was apparent that the winner would be either Tina or Amanda. Andrea was either doing too much and not completing elements due to time, or was buckling a bit. Amanda who always seemed to have time issues was getting better and better and came across a bit grumpy. Tina was consistent from the beginning but could she have a strong finish. Tina wins.

This group of bakers was much more savy and older than the last group of British bakers. I really enjoyed both cake and bread week shown as a two hour set.

I really enjoyed both cake and bread week shown as a two hour set. yes, they were throwing around terms about the bread that I had never heard before. And like I said no "I don't make bread"! Overall, no real disasters too.

I'm fascinated that a robed religious is in the tent. Brother Andrew seems so nice, especially since Paul Hollywood's role on the show is to be grumpy. I like how the contestants love getting a handshake from Paul. I wish this version was on for more than just the holidays. I would like both the UK and US versions.

Finally watched the first two episodes tonight and I must say I enjoyed them more than the entirety of last season's GBBO. It looked like the old GBBO with a good mix of people, and these folks know how to bake! I like the grey haired lady and the priest best.

Caught up as well, and I agree with Kao, this really feels like the old school GBBO before the big changes. I like all the bakers, and Sherry, Emma and Spice are still a delight as well. I'm bummed over the baker eliminated in Spice Week, since they started off decently strong in the first couple of episodes. Not surprised over the elimination in Desserts Week, the baker was very up and down and struggled with timings, and had they not tried to take the easy way out in the SHowstopper, it's possible they could've stayed over the one person who got first in Technical but had terrible Signature and Showstopper.
I remember last year's season was only three two-hour episodes, but this one seems to be going for longer than that, and it delights me.

Looks like it’s going to go on for one further week, so a total of eight episodes (4 weeks of two episodes/week). I find it fine. I still prefer the original GBBO. Sherry is ok, I neither love or hate her. Paul is Paul. (If anyone has watched the Australian version of this show I am actually liking their judges the best). The hosts are fine. Rooting for Marisa and Tanya.

The Great American Baking Show Holiday Edition Season 5 Episodes 5 - 6 - "Pastry and Cookie Week" - December 26, 2019 Episode 5: Pastry For the Signature Challenge the bakers has 1 hour and 45 minutes to make a citrus tart. For the Technical Challenge the bakers had 2 hours and 15 minutes to make hand raised pork pies. For the Showstopper the bakers had 4 hours to make 6 Napoleons and 12 palmiers. Baker | Signature
Citrus Tart | Technical
Hand Raised Pies | Showstopper
6 Napoleons and 12 Palmiers | Alex | Japanese Winter Remedy Tart | 1st | Very Berry Holiday Napoleons and Palmiers | Andrew | Ginger and Citrus Tart | 2nd | Winter Morning Napoleons and Palmiers | Dana | Richmond's Cherry Lime Tart | 4th | Fennel Palmiers and Caramel Latte Napoleons | Marissa | Mandar Lemon Tart | 5th | Sugar on Snow Napoleons and Golden Rugelach Palmiers | Sarita | Boxing Day Tart | 3rd | When Flaky is a Good Thing Napoleons and Palmiers | Tanya | Shoot for the Stars Tart | 6th | Keep Calm and Napole-Ons |
Star Baker: Dana Eliminated: Tanya Wow, Tanya just had bad day but with such a small group it was enough to send her home. I did like how Paul consoled her, that if she had not panicked and started her butter pastry lamination again she would have been fine. Paul has so much knowledge about correcting mistakes. It seems as if the contestants are panicking under the pressure. Episode 6: Cookie For the Signature Challenge the bakers had 2 hours and 30 minutes to make 18 identical sugar cookies. For the Technical Challenge the bakers had 1 hour and 30 minutes to make one dozen almond ginger fortune cookies. For the Showstopper Challenge the bakers had 4 hours to make a macaron tower using macorons made of two different flavors. Baker | Signature
12 Sugar Cookies | Technical
12 Almond Ginger Fortune Cookies | Showstopper
Macaroon Tower | Alex | Snuggly Kitten Sweater Sugar Cookies | 1st | Dark Winter Masquerade Macaron Tower | Andrew | Winter Breakfast Sugar Cookies | 4th | Dream Holiday Macaron Tower | Dana | Coffee To Go Sugar Cookies | 5th | Monochrome Macaron Tower | Marissa | View from the Cabin Window Sugar Cookies | 3rd | New Year's Eve Black & White Ball Macaron Tower | Sarita | Bea & Tilly's Lost Mitten Sugar Cookies | 2nd | Cocktail Party Macaron Tower |
Star Baker: Marissa Eliminated: Sarita Unless Sarita could have gotten her time management and her nerves under control it was only a matter of time before she was eliminated and it was time. I am very happy with the four remaining bakers, this is a very level playing field can't wait for next week.

I'm enjoying this season very much, enjoying the bakes and the contestants. By this point Alex has been the front runner from the start, being the most consistent, but he's faltered a bit in the more recent episodes, so I'm thinking it can be anyone's game depending on the next challenges and how well they perform or not.
Both recent eliminations made sense. Tanya just had a bad day and Sarita had good ideas but just could not get the time management down and her nerves would get the best of her more often than not.

The semi-finals decision must have been difficult: all four have faltered and all have done well. I thought it might be Marisa's time to go after she messed up the soufflé and dropped the cake layer! But, the flavor of her opera cake must have saved her. No one really dominated the competitions so far tonight; judges had something to point out for each of them. Like you said, rembrant, it's anyone's game!

The Great American Baking Show Holiday Edition Season 5 Episodes 7 - 8 - "Semi-final and Final" January 2, 2020 Episode 7 - Semi-final The Signature Challenge was to create 2 flavors of canape made from rough puff pastry and the bakers had 3 hours. The Technical Challenge was to make 4 perfect souffles, the bakers had staggered starts as the judges had to taste the souffles very quickly after they had been removed from the oven and didn't have time to deflate. The bakers had 40 minutes for the Technical Challenge. The ShowStopper was to create a 7 layer Opera Cake, 3 layers of jaconde, 1 ganache, 2 buttercream, and 1 chocolate glaze. The bakers had 3 hours and 30 minutes to create the Showstopper. Baker | Signature Savory Canapes | Technical 4 Souffles | Showstopper Opera Cake | Alex | Thai-Inspired Party Platter | 2nd | Jolita Opera Cake | Andrew | Sophisticated Childhood Bites | 4th | Opera for Mom | Dana | Italian Comfort Canapes | 1st | Neopolitan Opera Cake | Marissa | Feast of Several Fishes | 3rd | Cherries Jubilee Opera Cake |
Star Baker: Dana Eliminated: Alex Kinda surprised Alex was eliminated but I have seen it before when someone who looks as if they will win from the beginning but flame out near the end. However, the remaining players are all very good and all it takes is one bad bake and you are eliminated. Alex was fun though. I was surprised that Marissa made it through from the editing it seemed as if she was on the edge of being eliminated in several of the last episodes. Episode 8 - Final The Signature Challenge was to create 24 choux buns in 2 hours and 30 minutes. The bakers need to make 12 buns with craquelin (topping made of brown sugar, salt and sugar). There also need to be two different types of pastry cream. The bakers had 2 hours and 30 minutes to create a Fraisier for the Technical Challenge. For the Showstopper the bakers had 4 hours and 30 minutes to create mini desserts for a New Years Party. The desserts must consist of 3 different types. Baker | Signature 24 Choux Buns | Technical Fraisier | Showstopper Mini Desserts | Andrew | Filipino American Choux Buns | 2nd | Baking My Way Through Life | Dana | Mexican & Californian Choux Buns | 1st | My Favorite Things | Marissa | Mercado Mexicana Choux Buns | 3rd | A Nutty New year |
Star Baker: Brother Andrew Runnerups: Dana & Marissa Oberservations: Signature Challenge: Marissa chose to make her icings and fillings first instead of her choux pastry for the signature challenge. This resulted in her not having enough time to bake her choux and is was still a bit wet during the judging. Marissa was also going to have duche de leche icing and coconut cream for one of her choux flavors but the duche de leche boiled over and she chose to use chocolate icing instead. The other choux had churro craquelin and mexican chocolate as the pastry cream. I can tell Paul likes Dana's attitude when she was asked about being in the finals her reply was "do what you love and have fun with it". I could see a twinkle in his eye when she said that. Dana's flavors were ginger craquelin with orange pastry cream and cayenne chocolate icing with cinnamon pastry cream. Dana unfortunately forgot to put the craquelin on top of her pastry when she started to bake and had to open the oven and let the steam out and that affected the structure of her pastry. Brother Andrew's flavors were craquelin (no flavor mentioned) with mango ginger pastry cream and dark chocolate icing and malted chocolate pastry cream. The judges did comment that he was not piping his choux buns but instead used a scoop and that actually resulted in messy inconsistently shaped buns. At this point I felt Marissa was out of it as she had been making the same time mistakes for the last two or so episodes and was having issues with confidence, maybe time management and it was affecting her bakes. Dana and Brother Andrew were determined to just have fun with it and that seemed to make a huge difference in their attitudes and their bakes. Technical Challenge A strawberry cake, consisting of a layer of genoise sponge, a layer of crème mousseline and fresh strawberries, another layer of genoise sponge, marzipan and strawberry gelee. Marissa spaced the strawberries too far apart and didn't put enough strawberries in the center, and had problems with her gelee affecting the presentation. I think Marissa overthinks the technical challenge and makes too many mistakes. Brother Andrew looked like he had problems with not enough mousseline and it was a bit messy. Dana was calm and collected and followed directions and viola won the technical. Judges Table (before the Showstopper): Spice Adams assumes that Brother Andrew is the front just because he received a Paul Hollywood handshake however Paul states that Dana won the technical and not to discount her. Sherry Yard comments that Marissa is not out of the running either as she can have a spectacular day. Showstopper Challenge: Dana is making a butterscotch budino parfait layered with salted caramel, galettes filled with dried apricots, and mini pavlova with blueberry champagne sauce. Marissa is making a pistachio pot de creme, financiers with caramelized hazelnuts, and mini pies filled with frangipane and plum slices shaped to look like rosettes. Brother Andrew is making a chocolate sandwich cookie filled with a lime buttercream and blackberry jam, berry and cream cakes with white chocolate frosting, and apple pies topped with salted caramel. Judges Tasting: Dana: Presentation was good, liked the very different types of desserts and the various heights. Both Judges luv'ed the budino especially Sherry Galette - the pastry was good the filling not so much, it hummed but did not sing Pavlova - was too soft, again the flavor did not wow, just hummed Marissa: Presentation was beautiful Pistachio pot de creme was perfect Financiers were overbaked, no flavor, the flavor was in the pralines Mini pie was bland Brother Andrew: Presentation was good Cookie was nice, lime worked really well Berry and Cream cake had no flavor apple pies were a symphony Judges Table: After the judges tasted all the mini desserts there is the sit down and discussion with the hosts Emma and Anthony. Antony Spice Adams thinks Brother Andrew has the win. Both Paul and Sherry agree that Marissa has taken herself out of the competition and it is still a hard decision between Dana and Andrew and there were elements that they both liked in both presentations. JMHO: I was rooting for Dana, but I am OK with Brother Andrew winning. Marissa took herself out of the competition. I do think that Dana's forgetting to put the cracklin on her puff pastry was a serious mistake that cost her the win. Just my opinion. However after a second and third look it seems the judges put everyone on an even footing come the showstopper. It does look as if Andrew came in first, Dana second and Marissa third. Note: at the end of the show there is a dedication to Mary Fanto, she was one of the casting directors who had a heart attack and passed away in December 2019.

I would have been happy with either a Dana or Brother Andrew win, and due to Dana's mistakes in the finale I wasn't surprised that Bro Andrew pulled out the win. I didn't think Marissa was going to win just because I realized I didn't really know who she was until these episodes. They all seemed like nice people.
At the beginning of the show I thought Tanya or Alex would win but as the challenges went along I started rooting for Bro Andrew and Dana.
