In my attempt to cover all genres & time frames, today I choose the blues from way back. Victoria Spivey was born in Houston in 1906. Her recording career spanned 40 years, from 1926 to the mid-1960s, she worked with Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Luis Russell, Lonnie Johnson, and Bob Dylan. She had an honor in 1929 when film director King Vidor cast her to play Missy Rose in his first sound film, Hallelujah!. She also went on to star in the hit musical Hellzapoppin in 1938. I can find no information on whether or not she released this song as a single, but I can guarantee that it indeed goes way back. From the info I find, she had her final single released in June of 1930 on a 78 rpm. And it should be pretty obvious that this song was also uploaded from a 78. Victoria passed away in New York on October 3, 1976, at the age of 69, from an internal hemorrhage. But she left a long string of blues based recordings behind including such titles as Black Snake Blues, Toothache Blues, Furniture Man Blues, Blood Thirsty Blues, Arkansas Road Blues, Santa Fe Blues, Spider Web Blues, Moaning The Blues, & Showered With The Blues & that just scratches the blues based surface. There have been a lot of great guitar players during my lifetime & Jerry Reed has to rank right up there with the best of them. He was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum & is also an inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was the CMA Instrumentalist of the Year in 1970 & 1971. He won Best Country Instrumental Performance - with Chet Atkins for Me & Jerry in 1971 & 1993 Best Country Instrumental Performance - with Chet Atkins for Sneakin' Around. And he also won 1972 Best Country Vocal Performance, Male - When You're Hot, You're Hot. He wrote this particular song for the 1971 film Vanishing Point. It’s kind of strange since Jerry was also in a lot of films that he didn’t appear in this one. There were a lot of pretty famous musicians involved including, Bonnie, Becca & Delaney Bramlett, Rita Coolidge & David Gates who all had roles in the movie, but not Jerry. Jerry was a heavy smoker all his life & it eventually caught up to him. He passed away due to emphysema in Nashville on September 1, 2008 at the age of 71. What is it with all the state titled songs? I mean I can't get into a musician's head, but did they all live in these states? I know John Denver lived in Colorado, but I keep seeing a pattern in your posts.

What is it with all the state titled songs? I mean I can't get into a musician's head, but did they all live in these states? I know John Denver lived in Colorado, but I keep seeing a pattern in your posts. I started an exercise a few months back to see if I could find music written about all the states. I went into it thinking I would find a few and was completely flummoxed to find 1000’s of them. So what you are seeing is a musical journey through the country, 1 song 1 state at a time. For the most part these folks did not live in these locations. I have been introduced to so many new artists & new songs by familiar artists through this experiment I thought maybe others would get a kick out of hearing some of this stuff. By the way, there are so many of these songs that this could go on for years. There are 100’s & 100’s on New York alone. I can stop if you would like me to.

If you live in a hot, humid place like I do, I reckon you would appreciate a bit of Autumn In New Hampshire weather. It is difficult to find any info on these folks. There is a Laura Lee Cascagnette who was a Journalism student at Sheridan College she supposedly graduated in April, 2019.. She also is a lifestyle content creator on her Youtube channel, "Life of Laura-Lee This may or may not be the same girl. And if you google the other name it takes you to ….well you know…& I’m pretty sure this isn’t him. But this song comes from what is apparently the only album put out by these 2. The album was called New Season & it was released in 2007 which leads me to believe that the 2 Laura Lee’s are indeed not one & the same, the ages just don't align. Regardless, I like the song. It’s kind of a breath of fresh non humid air. Autumn In New Hampshire by Sean Spicer & Laura Lee Cascagnette www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZSpF9IaUD0&feature=emb_title

East River Pipe is actually a guy named F.M. Cornog. He is an American songwriter, singer, self-taught musician, and home-recordist who The New York Times describes as "the Brian Wilson of home recording. He chose the name East River Pipe after observing a sewage pipe spewing out raw waste into the East River. Artists who have covered his songs include David Byrne, Lambchop, The Mountain Goats, Okkervil River, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Hazeldine, For Against, Mary Lou Lord, and others. Rolling Stone called Cornog "the most gifted of the new loners. This song comes from his 5th album called The Gasoline Age, released in 1999. Reviews included statements like this: East River Pipe has a way with moody, mellow mini-epics that puts other sad sacks to shame." You can be the judge of that. Neil Young has been installed into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: in 1995 as a solo artist and in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield. In 2000, Rolling Stone named him #34 on their list of the 100 greatest musical artists. He has been nominated for 26 Grammy Awards but won just 3 & it took him until his 20th nomination before winning the 1st time. The best I can tell he has released 42 studio albums with the most recent one happening in 2019. And there have been an additional 8 live albums to add to his output. Those totals don’t include his time with Buffalo Springfield or CSN&Y or the Stills Young Band. This comes from his 6th studio album called Tonight’s The Night recorded in 1973 but not released until 1975. The album got sterling reviews & In 2003, it was ranked number 331 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, moving up to number 330 in the list's 2012 edition and climbing further to number 302 in the 2020 update. There are so many subjects to be covered when writing music about New York City that there are tons of songs written about street corners. This is one of those songs. Richard Arnold "Groove" Holmes was an American jazz organist who performed in the hard bop and soul jazz. He began his recording career back in 1961 & his 40th & final album was released posthumously in 1991. This song comes from his 31st album called Six Million Dollar Man released in 1975. 125th Street, co-named Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is a two-way street that runs east–west in the New York City borough of Manhattan, it is often considered to be the "Main Street" of Harlem. Seventh Avenue originates in the West Village at Clarkson Street, where Varick Street becomes Seventh Avenue South (which becomes Seventh Avenue proper after the road crosses Greenwich Avenue and West 11th Street). A part of the avenue in the Garment District is co-named Fashion Avenue. The two intersect at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, originally the Harlem State Office Building, located at 163 West 125th Street at the corner of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (7th Avenue) “Groove” passed away in 1991 at the age of 60, dying of a heart attack after battling prostate cancer. 125th St. And 7th Ave. by Richard Holmes (organist) www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIbdG3PPTBM

If you ask me Dean Martin was the coolest rat in the pack. "Carolina in the Morning" is a popular song with words by Gus Kahn and music by Walter Donaldson, first published in 1922 by Jerome H. Remick & Co. The song debuted on Broadway in the musical revue The Passing Show of 1922 at the Winter Garden Theater sung by William Frawley. The song has also been recorded by Jimmy Durante, Dinah Shore, Judy Garland, and Danny Kaye. In 1957, Bill Haley & His Comets recorded a rock and roll version. Freddy Cannon recorded this song on his debut 1960 album The Explosive Freddy Cannon. Deans’ version comes from his album Swingin Down Yonder, released in August 1955. It was just his 2nd album & it seems to have had no chart success. Carolina In The Morning by Dean Martin www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGheaISgHZw

Well there is a person named Adam Taylor that is a composer responsible for soundtracks including the music for The Handmaids Tale. And there is an Adam Taylor who is a guitarist, singer from Rotterdam in the Netherlands. And there is an Adam Taylor who won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for After The Rain. And there is an Adam Taylor that plays bass for a reggae group. And there is an Adam Taylor that released an album called Play The Piano Drunk. I don’t know if this Adam Taylor is any of those other Adam Taylors or not or if any of those Adam Taylors are the same person or not. It is an Adam Taylor kind of world today. But this Adam Taylor plays some pretty nice acoustic guitar regardless. If you want to enter the music business, I’d suggest adapting the name Adam Taylor, it seems to work for others. My Home In North Dakota by Adam Taylor www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-rYcTPDmfA

Ian Hunter first came to prominence as the lead singer for Mott The Hoople during the years 1969-74. The band had some commercial success, and attracted a devoted fan base. But after their breakup he went on his own & recorded this song. The song comes from his 4th solo album called You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic released in 1979. The album featured members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band as the backing musicians. The song was first released in 1977 under the title "England Rocks" on a single in the United Kingdom, predating the release of the "Cleveland" version by two years. Ian has maintained, however, that Cleveland was the original subject of the song, stating on his web site, "I originally wrote 'Cleveland Rocks' for Cleveland. I changed it later to 'England Rocks' because I thought it should be a single somewhere and Columbia wouldn't release it as a single in the U.S. (too regional). 'Cleveland Rocks' is Cleveland's song and that's the truth." It was inspired in part by his desire to counteract the poor reputation of a city for which he had some affection. He states on his web site, "the inspiration for 'Cleveland Rocks' goes back to the old days when people used to make fun of Cleveland. Cleveland was 'uncool' and LA and NYC were 'cool'. I didn't see it that way. Lotta heart in Cleveland. Cleveland Rocks by Ian Hunter www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM-IEMlJyak

Ya just never know which direction these little things will take you. Boogie on the accordion is something to get you up & tapping a toe this morning. Louis Bashell was an American polka musician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was known for playing the Slovenian-style polka & was nicknamed "Milwaukee's polka king". He formed his 1st band in the 1930 & played into the 2000’s when his health began to fail him. In 1987, he became Wisconsin's first resident to receive a National Heritage Fellowship grant from the National Endowment for the Art. Despite the proclamations of her birth in the song, Joan Baez was actually born in Staten Island, New York. The song was written by Derroll Adams and John Stewart. Derroll Adams was the one born in Portland. She learned to play music when a friend of her father gave her a ukulele & she has this to say. “I was born gifted" (referring to her singing voice, which she explained was given to her and for which she can take no credit.)” She began to sell out concerts almost immediately in NYC in late 1960. And she emerged at the forefront of the American roots revival, where she introduced her audiences to the then-unknown Bob Dylan. By 1963, she had already released three albums, two of which had been certified gold, and she invited Dylan on stage to perform alongside her at the Newport Folk Festival. Her performance of "We Shall Overcome", the civil rights anthem written by Pete Seeger and Guy Carawan, at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom permanently linked her to the song. During her career she has released 25 studio albums & 14 live albums. This song comes from her 2nd live album called Joan Baez In Concert, Part 2' released in 1963. Joan is still alive & active & turned 80 in January. Portland Town by Joan Baez www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hksTaM-G5o

This was the title song to the 1974 album from the duo. Tina wrote the song herself & Ike produced the single. This was the follow up single to Nutbush City Limits, but it had no luck & failed to chart. The album itself was created exclusively for the international market. It was available in the US through the Columbia Record Club. So, there was no chart action on the album either. The group will breakup in 1976. Tina filed for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences on July 27. Their divorce became final in 1978. Ike & Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and the St. Louis Classic Rock Hall of Fame in 2015. They've each received a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Tina received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986. She is also inducted into the SoulMusic Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and is a 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. Nanci Griffith is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter, raised in Austin, Texas, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee. She won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. During her career she has recorded 18 studio albums & 2 Live albums. This song was included on her 1st live album called One Fair Summer Evening, released in 1988. It is 1 of 2 new songs included on the album that had never been previously recorded. The album got great reviews like this one from Jon Cummings of PopDose: “ Stripped of most of the country elements that had been ladled over their studio versions, Griffith’s songs emerge crisp and timeless; indeed, these live recordings accomplish the rare feat of rendering their studio antecedents obsolete.” Deadwood, South Dakota by Nanci Griffith www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9Ge6Dd_X_c

Jason & the Scorchers, are an alternative country band that formed in 1981 and are led by singer-songwriter Jason Ringenberg. During their time together they released 16 albums, their latest came in 2010. This song comes from an album called Still Standing, originally released in 1986. But, the song itself was not included until the album was re – released in 2002 & the song was an added bonus track. The band came to a parting of the ways in 1990 when drummer Perry Baggs was diagnosed with diabetes during a tour and the rest of the band were notified that he could not continue to perform. All the other members spread oput across the country & went on to things other than music. Jason formed a new band only to have tragedy strike. New bass player Al Collins passed away in his sleep of a heart attack in 2019. Diabetes would take the life of Perry Baggs in 2002. Hank Jr. is of course the son on Hank Wiliams, but he has had a long career of his own. His 1st TV appearance was in a 1964 episode of ABC's The Jimmy Dean Show, in which at age fourteen he sang several songs associated with his father who had passed away in 1953. His style is described as a blend of Southern rock, blues, and country. His father nicknamed him Bocephus (after Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield's ventriloquist dummy). He has won tons of awards throughout his career & has also been installed into The Country Music Hall Of Fame & The Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame. This song comes from his 32nd studio album called Rowdy & released in January 1981. The album went to #2 on the Country Chart & the song hit #1. It was his 1st #1 hit single since 1972. I can say that I really enjoy this type of music mostly, I think, because they could sit in your living room & play it without electronics. His real name was Don Van Vliet. He was an was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist. He grew up in Lancaster California & was high school buddies with Frank Zappa. After his musical career ended he pursued his passion for art, an interest that originated in his childhood talent for sculpture, and a venture which proved to be his most financially secure. Cold is more than a weather event. In this case it is a rock band from Jacksonville Florida that formed in 1986. The band has released 5 albums with 2 of them being certified as Gold, selling over a half million copies each. The band split up in 2006, but reformed & went out on tour again in 2009. None the less, there have been members coming & going, being added & being replaced throughout the history of the group. Their music has been described as alternative rock, hard rock, nu metal, alternative metal and post-grunge. It seems to be a bit of an anomaly when you can’t find any info on an artist or a group on the whole entire internet, or at least it did until I started trying to research some of these folks. But, here is another new group with very limited biographical info available. What I did find was limited to this: They were, or are, a band from Eau Claire, Wisconsin known for their songs celebrating the Green Bay Packers. The main members are Tom "Elroy" Sumner and J.R. Hanson. It appears as though they have released 2 albums with the most recent happening in 2012 so they may not even be a group anymore. This song comes from their 1st album called The Cheesehead Special released in 2005. The song has a nice vibe in my opinion, for what that’s worth.
