This show is about a team of rednecks in FL out hunting pythons in the Everglades. They say the invasive pythons became a big problem after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when all the snakes in a Miami Burmese python breeding facility escaped. BUT, well before that it was common knowledge when I was growing up that people who had pythons as pets would set them free in the Everglades when they got too large or they could no longer care for them (BAD!).
Anyway, these pythons are out of control. They eat EVERYTHING, all wildlife. We drove from Naples to Ft Lauderdale across Alligator Alley (through the Everglades) on Sunday and saw one that had been hit by a car!!!!!
Since this is a local problem here, we were interested in checking out the show Guardians of the Glades. I am NOT into killing or hurting any animals at all, and thankfully this show doesn't show the actual process of killing the snakes - more the "catching" process. Which is pretty amazing- they catch the snakes bare-handed by the tail, drag the snake closer and then grab behind the head with the other hand. Yikes! They show them putting each snake in a bag, not actually killing it. But they do show the process of having the dead snakes measured by the FL state representative and having the bounty paid (per foot). They also show the processing plant where the snake skins are tanned. They didn't show this yet, but it's my understanding that Gucci and other high-end labels purchase these snakeskins for their shoes, belts, handbags! They also show meeting with a Chinese herbalist who buys the gallbladders etc to make medicines. And of course, the meat is eaten.
Anyway, the team is pretty fun to watch. The main guy Dusty runs around barefoot everywhere and calls everyone "Son." I think even females.
I do not like hunting in general and at one point they showed a member of the team hunting for a wild boar with his 9 year old daughter. I didn't care for the hunting part BUT the daughter was driving the pick-up truck, backing it up and everything, which was pretty cool....
Anyway, give this show a try if it sounds interesting. Almost like Nekked and Afraid in the Everglades but with 5 people in clothing!
