Dancing With The Stars is not a show about dancing, per se. It isn't set up for viewers who take dancing seriously. It's frivolity for those of us who don't know anything about dancing and for viewers who know lots about dancing but understand proper scoring has nothing to do with the show. For heavens sake the judges aren't behaving professionally. Len is the resident 'cranky old guy" and Bruno is the stereotypical 'hysterical creepy guy shouting inappropriate sexual innuendo.' They have celebrity judges who have no business judging dancing technique. The show isn't broken; it's always been about celebrity first and dancing second. Or even third if you factor in the judging antics. Stunt casting and ringers have always been part of the show. This is escapism. The show is a bit silly and everyone involved is playing a 'character'. This show is still hanging around for a reason and it's not because people are longing for a professional dance off in the strictest sense of the word. I'll cheer on certain people no matter how awful they are lol I'll be happy when they stay even though someone better goes home. I'll automatically dislike a 'ringer', hoping they get the boot before some poor sap who is starting from a baseline of negative twenty. There are times I'm temporarily sad because someone I don't like advances. I'm not especially objective and I think the show is designed for that kind of viewer. And for silly and funny disagreements between viewers at home. Along the way viewers like me, who don't know anything about dancing, learn something about the art because of the pros. The audience watches first for the celebrity aspect-partly for the trainwreck aspect, partly because its fun watching non dancers learn from the pros, partly because we want to boo the 'villains'(and a villain is not a villain to every viewer) and partly because we want to see how a personal favorite (who might be hated by other viewers) dances. The show inspires more than a few viewers to take lessons. Or finally get up on the dancefloor. People vote for all kinds of reasons; the least of which is a vote for technical proficiency. The show has never claimed to be anything else. Casting Spicer is genius. People 'hate watch' others want to know what he's like away from politics, others are happy to see a guy from their political party on the show. Half the country is not tuning out. Divisive contestants have always factored into the show. And the show hasn't suffered at all. The stars aren't even stars lol They are people who do the show in hopes of revitalizing their careers, people who want to humanize themselves, people who want to extend their 15 minutes of fame and people who want to rehabilitate their public image. 'Dancing' on this show is a good way to accomplish those things.

While three of the male "stars" were a problem for some viewers at the start of the show, apparently the two athletes continued to be a problem on the show. Say what you will politically, but SS has been nothing but kind and a gentleman during the season. Right now, the remaining stars are all potential contenders as they all have really picked it up. If SS is safe and two excellent dancers are in danger, I don't think the viewers are going to rise up because lots of people are voting for him. I really don't care that he hasn't been a jerk on the show. He's a massively divisive person that they deliberately cast to gain viewers. I don't care that he tries either. He's, BY FAR, the worst dancer on the show, so I want him gone.
If they thought casting Spicer would improve the show's falling ratings, they were wrong. The show's ratings are down 32% from two years ago. I think people are just tired of these stunts. I know I am.

I found the post I was thinking of and it came from the lovely Miss_Griss on Oct 8 regarding the Oct 7th show:
I agree completely! I guess it doesn't matter though, this show is headed to the graveyards regardless.

I guess it doesn't matter though, this show is headed to the graveyards regardless. It also doesn't help that Bones, the awful dancer that won last season, is tweeting, vote Lauren, and not these Hollywood types, he too has all sorts of followers, and his own show. Thats also being divisive. I don't know why he was in the audience for three weeks running, what a sad reminder. I don't think Lauren needs his help, but adding Hollywood's types doesn't help this show at all. So I'm not laying blame just on Spicer, who has been pretty cordial, so far, but on this show has a whole. Bachelor Nation is represented by Chris Soules sitting in the audience, convicted of driving drunk and a fatal car crash..it's not just one person.. it's TPTB, that had a winning formula, that has now turned to crap.

That outrageous win by Bobby last year was the reason fans were in such an uproar over the show, resulting in "new rules" this year. But, the "new rules" are not much improved. What is wrong with the ABC power heads (TPTB)? Is this greed motivated (vote casting $), or do they just think we will watch regardless? They had a chance to revive the franchise, but instead, drove it into the ground. Cutting off half the country from voting was their first mistake. They should have let just the attending audience vote..... At least, it would been a better representation based on performance & popularity. Oh well,

It's a popularity contest, not a dance contest. It's all about who has the most fans or the biggest voting block or "followers". We all know that. The show is on for advertising dollars & notoriety. That's why they cast who they do.
I enjoy watching them dance & learn to dance. The way I see it, Sean is not a good dancer, but he's really trying & getting better, which is supposed to be the point of the show. Whether I agree with his politics or not is totally immaterial to me. At least he's not using his time at the microphone to rave about how tough his life has been or go on about the whole me, me, me bit as if the world revolves around him. Yes, I'm referring to the Bachelorette bimbo. All Sean does is come out, listen to the judges, try to have fun, and do his best, limited as that may be. Whether I agree with his views on anything or not, he seems like a nice and pleasant guy who's trying to dance.
I know some people can't stand him because of who he is, but that's their right. We all have opinions about people & who they are & the way they act. Personally I absolutely can't tolerate watching or especially listening to Hannah. Narcissistic to the extreme, totally self unaware & phoney as they come. Unfortunately she dances well & has a lot of fans (God only knows why) so probably won't be going anywhere for a while. But that's the whole thing. The show lets the public vote for their "favorite", not the best dancer. This is especially clear this year with the whole West Coast thing. We're all going to be disappointed in who stays & who leaves. We all like different people.
Personally Sean staying doesn't bother me a bit. I don't find him at all abrasive. Now, if he wins, that would bother me. But I highly doubt the judges would allow that, unless he improves very dramatically & the others all fall on their butts or cuss out the judges. Although, that last part might be fun to watch.
I have a feeling this show may have finally run it's course, that is, unless the ratings & advertising dollars are still coming in.

I usually mute Hannah, she irks me,especially talking about the bacherlotte, as if she was made to do it. I'm not sure she's connecting with the audience, although I don't think she's a bimbo, just a tad full of herself.

Sean's personality on the show is probably one of the best. He responds well to judges criticism, he enjoys dancing and gives it is all, remains positive and uplifting. I suspect that he is using this show to mitigate some influences that affected his success in politics....and many others done the same in the past. Favorable publicity is often the primary motivation for doing this show, and I find no fault with that. I do remember though, DWTS first seasons, and I see how different this show is now, from its earliest season. How voting results, was much different than it is now. It's true that it is now strictly a popularity contest, but it wasn't always that way. The original show, is what I miss most now. I presently have no faith that judges have any control in this. I expect Sean will win this season, unless by some miracle he makes Final 3 AND judges (not fan voting) decides who Final 2 will be???? If the judges have the sole right to eliminate one couple at F3, then it is possible Sean will not win this show the way that Bobby Bones did last season. I think it is unfair that popularity plays such a huge role (maybe the only role now) in determining who wins MB. But, it didn't start out that way. Times have changed, but not necessarily in a good way.
