Brother vs Brother: The theme was guest rooms and other areas, and while Drew's rooms were nice, I especially loved Jonathan's. I really liked the green, teardrop tiles in Drew's en suite, and the bedroom was good for all ages. However, the three slanting windows in Johnathan's bedroom was a showstopper, and I really liked his office. Mina and Karen were the judges this time, and while they really liked Jonathan's rooms they picked Drew's. The prize was to name a baby kangaroo at the zoo. I was glad that Drew went with a Aboriginal name that meant desert, from their first BvB show in Las Vegas. Jonathan had to clean up all the giraffe poop and pee from the enclosure. Next week they finish the exteriors, and the houses go on the market. Drew is killing Jonathan in this competition. I think he has spent less money overall, too, if I am not mistaken. I've been thinking about whether or not it is fair for different designers to judge every week or perhaps it would be better if the same judges judged weekly. I'm thinking this because of what Egypt Sherrod said last week or was it the week before? She had a certain set of criteria she was using to judge this year...a rubric if you will. And she chose the canyon home basically b/c he was able to create an income-producing apartment, suitable for Air BNB or even just a separate rental unit. But I think she did say she liked the hill top home's design better. The only problem I can see with keeping the same judge is that he or she would have to be kept in the dark as to which home belonged to which brother.

Good Bones: New flip in a new neighborhood. It was scary how they had to put in temporary supports in the basement to keep the first floor from caving in. Loved the penny tile in the kitchen. The dots on the staircase were an interesting idea, but it didn't look right and I was glad they painted over them. While I liked the living room and kitchen, I wasn't a fan of the staging upstairs; too frilly. Even though they didn't make a lot of money, I was glad they were able to sell the house. I think they do it more for the thrill of making something torn up look beautiful again than the money anyway. I enjoy this show and love Mina, Karen, and the entire cast of characters.
I'm beginning to notice that most of their designs/homes look very much alike, when completed. I understand that a designer's personal taste does come into play, probably without even being aware, but not only are the finishes alike but the layouts are too. Am I crazy?
No. You're not crazy. They're almost all identical. Open living, dining, kitchen space in the downstairs front. Half bath and en suite master in the downstairs back. Two or three bedrooms upstairs with a loft area and bathroom. Rinse, repeat. I think it's a good general floorplan, and the footprint of the homes they are working on is usually very similar to begin with, so I'm not mad at them, but they definitely aren't surprising us from a floor plan perspective.

While the layout tends to be the same, they switch it up with staging/special things for the house/paint/fixtures/cabinets/etc so the houses look very different.

The layouts may be very similar, but they use a nice variety of finishes.

Absolutely luv'ing Good Bones this week. While the basement "not being supported house potentially falling in" was scary I liked what they did with the house. I luv their staging and am impressed with all the artists whose paintings they used. The dog pictures were amazing.
I was surprised that the house was not bigger and it looked humongous but then realized that it is narrow and very wide. While I am glad Karen painted over her wall treatment the final block color looked good and read very feminine it would have been good it that wall had an ombre effect with just the paint color and no polka dots. The ladies do amaze with all the mix of colors and textures they use in staging and I absolutely luv the curtains they pick.

The only problem I can see with keeping the same judge is that he or she would have to be kept in the dark as to which home belonged to which brother. Drew has had the luck of the gods on his side that the house he picked didn't have much wrong with it structure-wise. Jonathan, on the other hand, had a lot of structure/sewer/attic issues that had to be dealt with before he could even begin with the redesign, and it cost him thousands. Every week there was a serious issue. I think he's spent like 28k on those issues?
I think it's very fair to have different judges every week, because not everyone judges on the same things. I think with having one judge you run the danger of them voting the same week after week, just because they like a particular house. This way, we still have an element of surprise. I think having 2 people can be an issue; I could tell that Karen liked Jonathan's house more but compromised with Mina, so Drew won.

The only misstep I thought they made was using a gray grout with the penny tiles in the back-splash. It deadened the lovely green color so that it didn't pop at all. The whole thing just looked muddy. It would have been so much prettier with either a white grout or one that matched the color of the tiles.

Flip or Flop I have watched this show for quite a while, probably since it's debut. I never really cared for Christina, and Tarek seemed only slightly more likable but I enjoyed the home transformations so I continued to watch. Last night I watched 2 episodes that were shot after the divorce. To me, it just cemented my dislike for Christina. Sure, we must take editing into consideration. But, she is not doing anyone any favors by being all snarky and know-it-all behind Tarek's back & into the camera. No, I suppose he isn't an innocent victim in all this. However, at the beginning and end of each day, they need to respect one another. This is a business and they are parents. She rolls her eyes behind his back, at the camera. To me, that is childish and disrespectful. She wanted to sell their home, which she apparently was awarded in the divorce. I get it - there are a ton of memories and baggage there, so a fresh start is likely best for everyone. But the way she was talking to the camera about how Tarek would react was childish behavior and to me, and is a reflection on who she is as a person. He made a couple of comments about her (something about doing her hair and another about her leaving town with her girlfriends and not telling him) so I suppose they both need to pull back on airing so much of their dirty laundry for the camera. Some people want the drama, I just think in the grand scheme, there are kids involved and this could all come back to bite them some day. If they are going to continue to be in business together, they should treat each other accordingly. I don't believe rolling your eyes behind your business partners back is professional, and commenting on how much time she may spend on her hair is necessary.

I think there's only one episode left of Good Bones this season. I'm glad Karen painted over those polka dots - good idea in theory, but it just didn't look nice in practice. The color they used instead was nice: Totally agree about all the personal jabs on Flip or Flop - cut it out. I don't watch HGTV for drama, I want to see houses and landscapes. That said, I'm probably the only one who didn't hate that lime green (I wish they'd left it on the front door!), but the house did look good in gray. I liked the patterned tile she used on the backsplash, and love the "blue jean" tile in the bathrooms. My local tile stores suck, I never see anything that different here.

I like the blue jean tile in the bathrooms on Flip or Flop. That was a wise, albeit expensive, mistake but I think it helped sell the house.
I didn't like the kitchen backsplash. It reminded me of the pattern of my parents' 1970s linoleum covered kitchen floor. I realize styles/patterns return to vogue but....yuck.

I was pleasantly surprised how good the bathrooms looked with the blue jean tile, I get the feeling they may have staged that piece of drama. Just my feeling. I didn't mind the green front door and would have done it in a slightly bolder green and it would have been fine. Again the entire scene felt staged. It is not necessary. I think both Tarek and Christina are picking better finishes and layouts for their houses.

Music City Fix - I like the Wilsons, and adored Masters of Flip, I do not like Music City Fix. Why? Well, it is half an hour and I liked the longer format because this couple tends to do much larger homes then most of the flippers and it takes times to show all. However what really irks me is that even in a half hour format you can show the before version of the home, the walk through, the redesign of the layout, the potential design and finishes of the bathrooms and kitchens. They do it all the time on the Flip or Flop homes. On Music City Fix they totally ignore the redesign of the bathrooms, and kitchens and you never see the thought process of what they are doing to those areas or the finishes. It is as if they edited out this big chunk of the episode and you are left wondering how you got from point A to point C as you never saw point B.

They showed a repeat Boise Boys on Saturday afternoon so, at least, they are still in a sort of rotation, which might bode well for them.

The whole season is available for purchase on iTunes and I think Amazon. I bought the pilot episode from iTunes and it was nice, but they were a bit rought around the edges. They are much better in the later shows.

It doesn't surprise me at all. Based on the episodes I've seen, she's generally the one who comes up with most of the good ideas for the flips. I also think she would win based on likability; while not as likeable as someone like Aubrey from FoF: Vegas she still rates higher than her ex. Tarek tends to be pretty polarizing, and the whole "I'm gonna grab a gun and go out in the hills right after I argue with you" thing put a lot of people off, along with all the interviews telling "his side of the story" to tabs which were nothing more than cut sessions against his ex.

Brother vs Brother. Drew is killing it. He is over budget with both basement dig outs for the apartment and the guest room bathroom. His house looks great. He spent 100k more to buy the house than Johnathan. Admittedly, I like Drew’s style with this house more than Johnathan this time around. I’m am still team Johnathan. I hope he wins the overall with more in the bank after the sale, but that basement apartment Drew added may bring it home.

I like Christina well enough, I'll check out her new show when it airs. I'm interested to see how she designs these houses that aren't flips (where you have to appeal to the masses).
I love Victorian style houses, and love what they did on Good Bones last night for the finale. The purple was cute! I think changing the floors out to a darker style was the right move...I wish they'd shown more of the bathrooms, though. And I'd like to know if that family was able to buy the house back. I hope so.
I did see an ad last night for the new season of Desert Flippers, so there's that to look forward to...

Yeah. That Good Bones episode was interesting.
The house must have taken forever for them to redo with the permitting delays and having to redo the foundation on part of the house. When the episode started, I thought, "They must be showing this one out of order, because Mina's not even pregnant," but by the end of filming, she was very pregnant.
I, too, hope the woman that sold it to them is able to buy it back.

She said that they had to have a family meeting, so I think she had to talk to close relatives to see if they wanted to pitch in and make it a "family" house that any member could stay at and everyone chips in on the property taxes, upkeep, etc. A good friend of mine had a similar situation with his family house in NOLA, but sadly the house was destroyed during Katrina.

I loved pretty much everything they did to the latest Good Bones home except the purple color. Why do they usually choose such oddball colors for the exterior of their homes? I don't get it. It was nice to see them tackle a home with a different style. Nice to see them think outside of their box. I love those two.
I'm sad Drew lost to Jonathan...and by only about $8,000. He should have waited for multiple offers.
Interesting about Christina getting her own show. I'll give it a try.

I was reading comments on social media posts by HGTV announcing Christina's show. Most comments were negative - people don't seem to care for her. She has been given an 8 show series, so that should be enough to gauge whether or not it will draw in viewers.

Brother vs Brother Team Johnathan for the WIN! I didn't really love his house and I was also super surprised at how little the profit was on both houses, 6 for Drew, 14 for Johnathan.
