One other season did a grilled layer cake as a technical challenge. The layers had to be light/dark. When I saw the title Festival I went to U.S. fair food and thought we would get deep fried Mars Bars. They still sell them in the UK, you know, and I'm jealous about that. I'm okay with Michael going home this week...it was a weird week. I was just at the Norfolk Fair in Ontario this weekend and they had deep fried butter.

Series 10 Episode 7: Festivals For the signature challenge, the bakers were asked to make 24 buns with the theme of a festival or holiday from around the world. For the technical challenge, Paul tasked the bakers with a deep fried pastry treat traditionally served during the Italian Carnevale, 12 Sicilian Cassatelles. For the showstopper challenge, the bakers were set with the complex task of making a kek lapis Sarawak, a traditional layered Malaysian cake. Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (24 Festival Buns) | (12 Sicilian Cassatelles) | (Kek Lapis Sarawak) | Alice | Lemon, Blueberry & Almond Hot Cross Buns | 6th | Chocolate, Orange and Salted Caramel Kaleidoscope Sarawak Style Layered Cake | David | Kozunak Plaits | 2nd | Sarawak Style Layer Cake Sculpture | Henry | Chocolate Kardemummabullar | 3rd | Elegant Present Box | Michael | Figgy Pudding Hot Cross Buns | 5th | Jamaican Mule Sarawak Style Layer Cake | Rosie | Mardi Gras Finnish Semlor Peacock Festival Buns | 1st | Rainbow Sarawak Style Layer Cake | Steph | Zest and Spice Hot Cross Buns | 4th | Chai Spiced Revitalise Cake |
I hope Rosie learns to give herself a bit less to do in this competition as she has great ideas, great designs, has good flavors, but tries to do to much. I was surprised with the judges comments about Michael's showstopper because I though as a representation of the Jamaican flag it look good. I didn't realize that the neutral layers should have had more color. But I guess with the field narrowing down the judges have to get pickier. Star Baker: Henry Eliminated: Michael

Series 10 Episode 8: Pastries For the signature challenge, the bakers were tasked to do a savoury twist on a usually sweet French Classic, Tarte Tatin. For the technical challenge, the bakers were tasked with a challenging task of recreating a Moroccan Pie made from warka pastry (also known as brick pastry). For the showstopper challenge, the bakers were tasked to create a vertical pie consisting of at least two separate pies. Shocked how many bakers said they don't like pastry. Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (Savoury Tarte Tatin) | (Moroccan Pie) | (Vertical Pie) | Alice | Leek, Apple & Goat's Cheese Tarte Tatin | 3rd | Apple Tree House Pie | David | Caramelly Carroty Tarte Tatin | 1st | Whitby Fish Pie | Henry | Crab, Tomato & New Potato Tarte Tatin | 5th | Chandelier Picnic Pie | Rosie | Shallot, Aubergine & Goat's Cheese Spiced Tarte Tatin | 2nd | Rapunzel's Tower | Steph | Caramelised Onion & Goat's Cheese Tarte Tatin | 4th | Curried Chickpea & Potato Carouse |
Wow, everyone had issues in the signature and technical and it looked as if it was all down to the showstopper. All had good designs in the showstopper except Henry. Four had thick crust, some with raw bits. Four had dry fillings. Steph had a good design, good crust, and a moist, tasty filling. Henry had the simplest design, issues with his crust, dry filling and not that flavorful. Not a surprise who got Star Baker and who got eliminated. The competition was close, no one can afford to make many mistakes at this point. Star Baker: Steph Eliminated: Henry

I don't know if we've ever had such a clear frontrunner before in Steph. Then again, Ian was Star Baker again and again in season 6, but Nadyia pulled out the win in the end. Maybe David will be this year's Nadyia

She might fall down at the last hurdle. It’s been known to happen. I do like her though. I felt for her when she was breaking down over the technical.
Another week where all the bakers complained about how they don’t like the main thing/never do it, in this case pastry. What exactly have they been baking?

How are you guys watching this season? I can't find it listed anywhere. Netflix. Every Friday they release a new episode of this season.
I don't understand these people. They have about a week's worth of time to practice both the Signature and Showstopper Bakes and with the exception of Stephanie they just don't bother and it shows. There was absolutely no reason for so many bakes to go belly-up for the Showstoppers because the things that displeased Pru and Paul could have easily been adjusted had they bothered to practice during the week. So many pretty bakes...so little substance.
Very pleased by Star Baker and who went home.

I just remember all those previous seasons when the bakers did pies both savory and sweet and they looked fabulous, all you ever heard them talk about was soggy bottoms, not this so afraid to have soggy bottoms the current bakers took all the moisture out.

There has been talk here that this is a different, younger group of bakers than we have seen in the past. I am still watching reruns on PBS and it seems as though those bakers ( from the old days) practiced all week in preparation for the show....not so much with season?

I think some of them have been practicing. Rosie said she had practiced but had never finished on time. She didn't adjust her plan even though she knew that. How any of them that don't finish on time at home think they'll finish quicker in the tent is beyond me. They have to not only cook but also talk to the judges, hosts and the camera which will take time. At least one of the others also mentioned they had practiced.
Was it last week that Alice said she didn't have time to practice because she'd been grading a ton of papers? Real life interfered with her practice time. I thought that implied on a normal basis she was practicing at home.

I remember people having school finals (Martha, Ruby, and someone else), schooling in general, work, and other real-life responsibilities yet they managed to also practice bakes. This lot however...*shakes head* I really hope they vet the bakers better next year.

I've said before that maybe the UK is running out of top-level home bakers for the show to cast, but then I did some Googling. There are 66 million people in the UK, even though geographically the UK is about the size of Michigan. And we thought we're crowded! Where do they put them all! After some of the press the show has received this year, I'd bet they'll go back to a more diverse cast next year. If only Big Brother were run like that...

Series 10: Episode 9: Pâtisserie (semi-final) For the signature challenge, the bakers were tasked with making eight identically decorated domed tarts. For the technical challenge, Prue gave the bakers the task to construct a Gâteau Saint Honoré, a French classic with involves both choux and puff pastry, plus a large amount of cream to relate the week's theme. For the showstopper challenge, the bakers were given a very difficult task to make sugar glass cabinets, along with pâtisserie to appear inside them. Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (8 Domed Tarts) | (Gâteau Saint Honoré) | (Sugar Glass Display Case) | Alice | Mocha, Hazelnut & Orange Domed Tarts | 4th | Save Our Oceans | David | Aperitif Domed Tarts | 2nd | Greenhouse Growing Moss | Rosie | Lemon, Raspberry & Mint Domed Tarts | 1st | Time with Family | Steph | Raspberry, Lemon & White Chocolate Domed Tarts | 3rd | A Night at the Opera |
With only 4 bakers to go no one could make mistakes. They all came across physically tired and mentally exhausted. I am OK with any making it to the finale but I wished Rosie had stayed. She was having a bad weekend. I do think that if her showstopper was moist and had some flavor she would have beaten David as she followed the brief and he didn't. Star Baker: Alice Eliminated: Rosie

I saw the UK version (it airs there on Tuesday before coming to Netflix over here on Friday) with Paul's infamous "diabetes joke" not edited out. It wasn't a mean/hateful statement, just a lazy attempt at humor because the dish was too sweet. I mean, he went this many seasons and how many international versions he's hosted without making that easy joke, so why now? Maybe he's getting tired of the grind. Paul Hollywood sorry for 'thoughtless' diabetes joke on Bake Off - BBC.comI like Steph, but I was happy someone else won Star Baker just to keep things interesting. I like Rosie but I wanted to see David in the finals so I'm kind of glad fate stepped in.

I am pretty sure that it is so much easier to make a mistake in today's world than even just a few years ago. People do enjoy their outrage and have the internet capabilitiy to broadcast it.

I think they kept the diabetes remark in the Netflix episode as it was made about the technical challenge. I didn't think anything of it. People are just way over sensitive.

It jumped out at me (I have diabetes and love sweets) but to me was only slightly cringeworthy and I would agree a "lazy" joke. At least it wasn't in the double entendre territory they've explored all season.
I didn't care for Rosie in the beginning, but she grew on me...sorry to see her miss the finale.
I still don't care for Alice...sorry to see her make the finale.

There is a restaurant chain that serves huge burgers called The Heart Attack Grill-- a prime rib is called a heart attack on a plate, cigarettes are called coffin nails. Except for a small percentage of people, diabetes 2 or heart problems are caused by a bad diet. Again discounting a small percentage of outliers, lung cancer is caused by smoking.
Diabetes on a plate??....yea, that is just what it is.

I survived a childhood of people singing "Short People" (I'm under 5' tall) to me all the time. Too many people are too easily offended.
Just saw that in Australia, KMart took their children's Halloween costumes of bride dresses out of the stores because some people were offended by its link to human trafficking.
Really?

Diabetic here, not offended. I call sweet food "Diabeetus" all of the time so I thought his remark was funny. In a world where things are often said (and done) that are truly offensive this is low-hanging fruit.

The finale aired in the UK tonight -- I won't spoil anything, obviously. But at the end of the show, they announced that a Junior edition of Bake-Off was starting this Monday. I'm guessing it will only air over there, but it would be nice if Netflix picked that up as well.

The Holiday edition of Bake Off is premiering next Friday on Netflix! I watched the previews and they have two previous winners on this year. Not sure how I feel about that since the holiday shows traditionally gave bakers who didn't win before a chance to get something but I will watch anyway. There's a lot of great bakers on from the past so I'm sure it will be exciting.

Not spoilers either, but people were up in arms this week over yet another snide remark by Paul, and this time I rather completely understand where they're coming from and why they're not happy about it. I've also seen news sites commenting about how the show doesn't feel like it used to, especially because the judges have been too cutting. It's clear as day that Mary's kindness is sorely missing and lacking ever since she left.
