Oh, folks online are LIVID. Blatant favortism this season, people saying it was rigged, Nancy's nasty treatment of Sherrod, etc. I know that traditionally the last bake is a cake, but way to fit into someone's wheelhouse? In that person's defense that bear cake was cute as hell and tasted good, but not as good as Thoa or Kevin's cake. Justine also said a lot of backhanded things about the other contestants this season so I was okay with her walking away with nothing, lol.

It was like they announced the winner and boom Christmas Cookie Challenge. It made me wonder if TPTB knew some of the comments that were being made. Yes, the winning cake was cute {but} Ashley was called out for making a lot of cakes...

Ugh. I agree that Ashley's cake was super cute, but I'm mildly irritated that she won. With yet another cake/sugar cookie combo. I was Team Kevin...if only his decorations were as good as his flavors, he would (should) have won. And why did he get ripped for using nonpareils on his cake but they cooed over Ashley's use of chocolate melts? I know hers looked better, but still. Justine should have been sent home for those hideous "macarons". At least Sherrod's looked like macarons. Nancy seriously got on my nerves this season with her nonsense. They should go to blind judging for ALL the bakes.

When you get to the point that your biases are obvious your ability to see who baked what should be taken away until after you've made your decisions. The problem is a lot of the bakers use their time in front of the judges to explain how the bakes were made, etc.

Finally watched all of HBC. The biases were so obvious - Nancy with hers and Carla with hers - like the two judges were each trying to balance out the other. It really ruined what could have been a decent season. Not at all thrilled with the winner. I was hoping Javier would make it to the end - that darned braided pastry Yes please go to blind judging for the bakes. This other nonsense is ridiculous!

Just read some FN news that's disappointing and distressing. Last Tuesday Darnell Ferguson was arrested in KY for breaking into his soon to be ex-wife's house and attempting to strangle her. I rooted so hard for him and followed his career since he first appeared in Guys Grocery Games; why is it so hard for men to behave like decent human beings? Ugh. His lawyer is trying to frame it as a "disagreement" but there's disagreeing with someone, and then there's breaking into someone's house, punching walls, and choking them out to the point that they lose consciousness. people.com/food-network-star-darnell-ferguson-wife-had-disagreement-says-lawyer-8425584

More bad news: After this season of Kids Baking Championship is done, Valerie Bertinelli is done with Food Network.
They didn't offer her any new contract when her current one ended, so they basically ghosted her. Her own Emmy-winning cooking show had already been canceled last year.
They didn't notify her in any official way, she just got the message when they didn't call her in for any holiday specials.
Corporations suck.

She seems like a great fit with Duff & the kid bakers. People has an article that says a source close to production told them Valerie was in negotiations with FN, her team decided they wanted more and talks stalled. That supposedly she was in talks to continue and was let go this past Friday. Then another source told them her deal was up, FN decided not to renew and didn’t make her an offer to continue. So who knows people.com/valerie-bertinelli-wanted-continue-food-network-talks-stalled-8546894Either way they should have found a way to keep her. If they can afford to have Guy Fieri on almost 24/7 and pay him a bajillion dollars, seems like they could have found a few more bucks to throw Valerie’s way.

That is terrible! I don't watch the kids shows but she's a light and she and Duff were a good team. This isn't the first time FN has pulled mess like this; remember what they put Bobby Flay through?

Yeah that People article had a misleading headline and some bad info. Valerie went on SM to clear the air. She wasn't holding out for more money, they never bothered to even contact her to negotiate a new contract.

Oh, if enough people say that and stick to their word she'll be back. All they understand is their bottom line, and I think they sorely underestimated Valerie's appeal. They tried that with Bobby Flay, Bobby said "Fine, I'll go to Netflix," numerous fans said they wouldn't be back and if they could pay Guy they could pay Bobby, and magically thy found the money to pay him.

The more I read about this the angrier I get on her behalf. People doesn't trade on rumors; they only print stories if they have a source that is directly involved with the people involved in some way. It's looking an awful lot like not only did they quiet fire this woman, a source from the Network went to People and fed them this story about her being greedy and wanting more money so they wouldn't look bad. That is so horrible on so many levels, damn. Good for her for going to SM and telling the truth about how it went down. Between this and the mess that was the Holiday Baking Championship I'm really wondering what's going on at that network.

I saw a FB thread about GGG from last night and there were a lot of comments in support of her. And usually, I get home and watch GGG but instead watched something else. They shouldn't underestimate how many people like her.

Now I'm really not sure what's going on at FN because even Carla Hall is branching out. She has a new series on Max that will be starting soon called "Chasing Flavor" where she basically travels around the world to track down the unexpected lineage and international origins of America's favorite dishes. The preview looks really good, and I'll definitely be watching. Considering the shady way FN treated Valerie it wouldn't surprise me if more of their talent start looking elsewhere, so good on Carla for looking out for herself and getting that Max money.

Yikes -- Duff Goldman was in an accident and hurt his hand. A drunk driver swerved into him. He says it's going to be a long road to recovery but his hand was his only injury... http://instagram.com/p/C26gxWGumHi

Tournament Of Champions:It's that time of year again; March Madness, but make it food! 32 (oops, make it 31) competitors consisting of the usual suspects, some new blood, and all 4 champions from the previous seasons (Brooke Williamson, Maneet Chauhan, Tiffany Faison, and Mei Lin). Interesting enough, it looks like Darnell Ferguson was in the competition but FN did a complete wipe of his performance due to his legal troubles; the East bracket only has 15 people competing instead of 16, and when they showed the entire chart at the end of the show there are 2 names that were blurred out on the East Coast side. Word around the campfire says his partner was Amanda Freitag (who more than likely won considering the ease that they snipped Darnell out). 2/18 Matchups:Jet Tila vs Brian Malarkey: No surprises here. Jet has made it to the final 4 in almost every TOC, and he's a hard act to beat. Jose Garces vs Marc Murphy This one surprised me because Garces is an Iron Chef who knows his way around a dish, and the Randomizer played to his strengths. Britt Rescigno vs Jonathon Sawyer: I love me some Britt-Britt and was worried about her because her meatballs had some trouble cooking, but she got there in the end. Michael Reed vs Mei Lin: Once again, no surprises here as Mei is the reigning champ, plus she's a beast in the kitchen. With that said, with a score of 79-76 Michael gave her a run for her money, plus he beat out numerous other chefs in the qualifier rounds to become the 8th seed for the West Coast. His calm demeanor made him a delight to watch, and I hope to see him on more FN offerings. It sucks that he was pitted against Mei because I wanted to see more of him.

Tournament Of Champions:
2/25 Matchups
Round 1 Shirley Chung vs Joe Sasto. They both basically cooked the same dish (dumplings) but went in wildly different directions, and the judges loved both and had a hard time deciding. There was only a three point difference in the final score.
Round 2 Kelsey Barnard Clark vs Tobias Dorzon. I like Tobias, and he went far last year before nerves and anxiety did him in. I'm hoping for a much better outcome for him this season.
Round 3 Amanda Freitag vs Darnell Ferguson. Contrary to previous reports they did not cut this round from the show. What they did do was while they showed the battle, they cut all of Darnell's promotional tidbits (the chef bio at the beginning of the battle, his reaction shots while the judges were tasting the food, etc). There was also no interview with Hunter or Simon at the end of the battle. I think it's a safe thing to say that's he's become persona non grata at Food Network.
Round 4 Brooke Williamson vs Kevin Lee. Well, damn. I completely did NOT see this one coming. Brooke is a former winner and a formidable opponent, and the fact that Kevin beat her speaks volumes about his skills. Even so, there was only a point difference between the two. Very interested in seeing how far he's going to go in this tournament; could he become another Britt? We shall see.
This week's High Scorer: Shirley Chung (with a score of 89).

Tournament Of Champions:
This week I think the Randomizer was drunk because some of these folks got the worst combinations of things I've ever seen.
3/3 MatchupsRound 1 Eric Adjepong vs Stephanie Izard. I hated every bit of this. Love Eric, love Stephanie, HATED the fact that they were pitted against each other. The Randomizer was...on something because chewy? Scrapple? Also had to use a griddle? Ugh, plus I hated seeing Stephanie in near tears after she lost. It was really upsetting, but both got high scores (90-88) Round 2 Casey Thompson vs Antonia Lofaso. I knew my Italian Queen would pull through! Both of them were helped immensely by a halfway normal Randomizer with tasty things like Ground Venison, Pepper Jelly, and Celery root. The meatballs Antonia made looked "Ooh-Weee" good, and apparently the judges thought so too, lol. Antonia also hit a 92 score...a Tournament high so far.
Round 3 Lee Anne Wong vs Adam Sobel. Was really, really glad Lee Anne took this because with the devastation in Hawaii she deserves a break today, and also Adam's arrogance really bugs. Lee Anne had nothing but complimentary things to say about him in the pre-challenge interview while Adam said nothing about her, it was all about how he wanted to win. They had to work with Shrimp, Cucumbers, Star pasta, and it had to be boiled to boot? Goodness. I must say Adam was a very gracious loser and had good things to say about Lee Anne in the exit interview, so that was nice. Lee Anne also told Eric and Antonia "Hold my beer" as she scored a 93. Round 4 Nini Nguyen vs Maneet Chauhan. Sharper eyes than mine on Reddit said that these two initially got a Randomizer so whack, Guy rerolled just on general purpose and they didn't catch all of it in editing because you can clearly see "Sauerkraut" as the Wild Card ingredient before he rerolled. They ended up with things like Turkey Wings, Tomatillios, and Green grapes, plus they had to use a crepe pan so not much better, but more workable. Nini gave it her all, but the Spice Queen is the Spice Queen for a reason and Maneet prevailed, ending up with a score of 83.
This Week's High Scorer:Lee Anne Wong (with a score of 93). She opted to give the 5,000 donation given to the highest scorer to friends who lost their restaurant to the recent wildfire in Hawaii to help rebuild.
