Overall a nicely done film stylistically. Captures the 1950's era, just after World War II with folks living with various tragedies that had happened to their families. General theme of family, loss, rejection, the weird kid fitting in, with of course magic and good and evil thrown in. Shows kids can be resilient, and very political and sly at a young age. Set and costumes are excellent. Cate Blanchet is mesmerizing. I may have been tired but the story plodded a bit for me. Good for kids and adults, fun family film. I like seeing kids stories translated to film. The only thing that seemed odd to me is the racial diversity the elementary school had. While current films are trying to be racially diverse in their casting that simply did not happen in rural small town America after World War II.
