Can I say this was probably one of my favorite episodes ever of Finding Your Roots. I was so happy Andy and George but for different reasons. Great way to kick off the season can't wait for more episodes.

I didn't think GRRM was happy AT ALL. He seemed to be holding back his irritation over the reveal that his longtime joke about being Italian wasn't valid any more. Oh, and that the grandfather he reviled his whole life might not have been such a terrible person.....and that his beloved grandmother might not have been the sweetheart he believed her to be. That's a lot of information to take on board and I don't know how happy I'd be about it either. I definitely wouldn't want to process it all on camera!
I loved Andy's story, even though it was less genealogy than DNA research. Amazing how much they can find out. I loved seeing how they narrowed down the search for his grandparents. Obviously, since his mom is in her early 70's, they probably were not going to find living parents, but I was sort of hoping that one of them would still be alive. Still, a happy ending with lots of new family members!

Still, a happy ending with lots of new family members! Yeah. That was a lot for GRRM to have to take in. It almost Seemed like HLG was relishing pointing out that his grandmother may have cheated. The way he did it bordered on unkind. I thought Andy's family was an interesting combination of genealogy and DNA research. His mother's mother was found through traditional genealogical sleuthing based on clues in the adoption records, then verified with DNA. And with the father, it was the reverse: they had the DNA evidence of who the likely people were and then pieced together the story using genealogy sleuthing techniques. (Though my guess is that if either of her half-brothers had done DNA tests, they would have seen the sibling match right away and worked backward from there to the father, so they may have been BSing us a little bit. Who knows?) I do agree with mika06 about this being one of my favorite episodes ever. I loved Andy's mother's story, and the GRRM story was interesting, too. (I did find it ironic that Andy ended up with the Italian ancestry that GRRM lost. Talk about salt in the wound!)

This episode was like sleuthing! Amazing findings! I was trying to get ready for bed, but kept watching the tv. It was pretty fascinating.

What a lovely show. And now I'm definitely an Andy Samburg fan. What a sweetheart.

I continue to be amazed at how many behaviors and situations recur through generations on a family tree, even to people who have no knowledge of their ancestry. Look at Michael Moore and the history of anti-war/pacifism in his family or the trend of strong single mothers on Laura Linney's family tree. It's one of those things that seems to happen a lot. We've seen the same thing on WDYTYA. Cool that, in the episode with the comedians - Sarah Silverman, Seth Myers and Tig Notaro - ALL of them had a genetic relative who'd also appeared in the series! Really neat a few episodes prior when Marisa Tomei found that she and Julianne Moore are related because they were longtime friends and went to school together. I also loved when Bernie Sanders and Larry David turned out to be cousins. It was especially funny since LD had played BS in a sketch when he hosted SNL. Since Skip Gates was involved in this video, this thread seemed the best place to post this. Amazing project from Ancestry and Sundance TV. BTW, I knew next to nothing before I watched the film and I'm glad about that. Having the "secrets" revealed while I watched made it even better. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MdupcscFi0

From what I can tell, the new season of FYR starts on October 8th with "Hollywood Royality": Isabella Rossellini, Anjelica Huston and Mia Farrow. Episode 2 is Melissa McCarthy and Eric Stonestreet.
From the PBS press release: I'm glad there are more episodes coming, but I wish there wasn't such a huge gap between airings of those groups of episodes.

I love this show, but this episode was kind of bummer in that two of the stories - Questlove and S. Epatha Merkerson - were from previous seasons. I don't think Ava Durvernay was on a previous episode.
It looks like next week's episode is the same kind of thing - stories from previous (and different) episodes, edited into a "new" episode.

Interesting. Hers felt to me like I was watching something I'd seen before. His not so much, so maybe I didn't catch the previous version of it.

Yep, I've seen the Ava DuVernay segment before. You know, I thought her segment seemed familiar, but when I checked imdb, it was only shown as this year. Now there's no listing on her imdb for the show (or there was when I looked earlier). I looked it up on another site and saw that she was on the episode with Janet Mock and Te Nehisi Coates, whose appearance on the show, I DID remember.
I love this show, but I'm not really a fan of the re-edited "new" episodes. I like seeing actual new content. Since they've repacked the celebs into new episodes, my DVR records them, even though I've already seen it.

I am very disappointed that they are messing with the show. I thought that they might be usinng other stories from the same person since so much information is uncovered, but it looks like they are just redoing the old stories and repackaging. Highly disappointing, Dr Gates. I expected better from you.

Is tonight's episode a bunch of repeats, too? I swear I've seen stories about Marissa Tomei and John Torturro before, but I'm not sure about Jimmy Kimmel. (I'm not absolutely sure about any of them, so I guess that, either way, I'll go ahead and watch as if it's the first time.)

Yep, all repeats. Again Yeah. I recognized the stories in Marissa's and John's. Jimmy's was new to me.

The wiki page for the show's episodes lists all the names. Just for reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Finding_Your_Roots_episodesThree episodes this season are comprised of all previously shown profiles and the Mia Farrow one in episode 1 was also from a previous season. So, we only got SIX new episodes this season. Not cool
I remembered all of the profiles from this week. Marisa Tomei's was especially memorable because of the DNA test linking her to Julianne Moore - they met when they were both students at BU. Kind of crazy.

At the end of the show tonight was a dedication to Johni Cerny, the lead genealogist, who died this week. When you look at this obituary, I think you'll immediately recognize her from all of the footage they've shown of her looking for resources in various settings. RIP, Ms. Cerny! www.nytimes.com/2020/02/22/arts/television/johni-cerny-dead.html

I just watched the most recent one with Tea Leoni and Joe Madison, and the DNA research was fascinating. I had the feeling, though, that I'd seen this before. Was this a rerun even though it's part of the current season?

Was this a rerun even though it's part of the current season? It wasn't a repeat, but both of those stories were on previous episodes. They keep doing that - editing old material into "new" episodes. I like the show, but I wish they wouldn't pretend these are new episodes. We know the difference. I didn't look to see when Joe Madison was on before, but Tea was on in 2017.

Yes, they're doing it again. I checked my TV Show Favs app on my Android. Season 6, Episode 12, DNA Mysteries has a note at the bottom of the description:
(Tea Leoni originally appeared in Season 4 Episode 8. Joe Madison originally appeared in S05E10.)
According to this app, it looks like there will not be another TRULY NEW episode until January 5, 2021. This is the same nonsense they pulled last season. They scramble portions of past episodes with different people and broadcast it as a new episode.
UGH!

Thanks to both of you for that info. Yeah, Critical. I didn't mind watching it again. It was just strange that they were presenting it as a new show, and I kept thinking, "I'm pretty sure I've seen this before."

I've seen that happen with reruns on CBS - annoying, but with an episode you liked, okay. I watched for the first time last week and enjoyed it so anything on from now on will be new to me.
ETA: I watched the latest looking for a reason to call it new. I found that they wove two stories from different episodes into one coherent piece with narration. The narration makes it new.

Last week's episode with Mandy Patinkin and Audra McDonald was one of my favorites, not just because I'm a Broadway fanatic and they're two of my all-time favorites. I just loved the emotion and how engaging and engaged they both were.
When Mandy learned that his family members had died in the Holocaust (after believing his whole life that no one in his family had), I wept with him. I know that feeling, having learned that members of my own family met the same fate.
It's so nice to be getting new episodes again. I watch every week, even when it's a "remix" episode, but I like seeing new stories.
