I think Anderson's Maggie is a bit OTT, but the base is there.. I think she did well enough in the recreation of such an iconic figure. I have more issue with Diana. The actress has a resemblance but she is playing her like a simpleton or someone with some a bit of a mental deficiency. Diana may have been naive and young, but she was not stupid and I really kind of hate it how they show her. She was smart, she was witty, and she was shrewd. She had issues, sure, but she was not at all dumb.

I love GA and hope she cleans up during awards season. I suspect she will, she seem to get better as it goes on.. I didn't care for Olivia, but she's better this season, jmho, than last.

I watch a lot of foreign films and TV shows on Netflix and a recent fave is The House of Flowers, which is a Mexican novella about a rich family that is full of secrets that is wild as hell. I don't know what is crazier, the mistress hanging herself in her married lovers house during his birthday party, the daughter and maid who finds them, the brother with both a male and female lover he's trying to hide from the rest of his family, the sister who is secretly married to a Black guy, and other crazy stuff. That doesn't even count the fact that the mistress owned a drag Queen burlesque club that she wills to her lover's wife--and that is named after the wife's flower business! It's a lot of fun and I'm enjoying it a lot.

We keep going back to Schitts creek, I'm in love with David..and Mutt;) I have watched this show six times, all the way through. I love it and in the midst of all that is going on in the world the characters bring so much laughter and help me keep my mind on other things. Love me some David.

I thought it was well done, and bonus points for the Romans actually speaking Latin. Paranormal - Arabic horror/fantasy set in 1960's Egypt. Really enjoyed it. To The Lake - fast paced Russian apocalypse series. I liked this one also, hopefully it gets a second season. The Crown (season 4) - this season doesn't seem to be a favorite here, but I thought it was fantastic.

My favorite scene in the whole series was when {Spoiler} Patrick serenaded David at the open mike

Hillbilly Elegy This movie proves, you shouldn't bother reading the critics take on movies. Glenn Close and Amy Adams' performances were fantastic. A young man growing up in a dysfunctional family, who, against all odds, is able to break the cycle. We really enjoyed it, even if the subject matter wasn't to everyone's liking.

Are some critics basing their opinions of the movie on the political views of the story's creator? I'm tired of hearing about celebrities political views in general.

Many critics vilified him for being and upstart and not having the education, knowledge, or background to describe what the social and economic standing was of that area. Not every books needs to be a dry tome of knowledge written by a college professor. The author wrote about his life and what happened to his family socially, and economically. I really hate it when so called experts rip apart someone like that.

I have not watched the movie yet - I plan to over the weekend. I did read the book. To me, the book had two very distinct parts to it - one was the author telling the story of his family and how he grew up. The other was his offering insights as to how people who come from the background he did think, and what the impact of various public policies intended to help is on people like his family. What I found to be especially memorable about the book was those insights - I still find myself reflecting on his points that not everyone sees the cause and effect of their actions and it's helped me to better relate to some people I know. But from what i understand of the movie, it is totally void of those insights - which I get as they'd be very difficult to put in a movie. I think that most of the dislike the book got was from people who didn't care for is insights. So I find it odd by not surprising that they'd slam the movie for leaving out something they didn't like from the book!

One of our former writers (who is also a professional writer, and not the one who wrote those vampire books ) is from West Virginia and has a serious problem with Hillbilly Elegy and other stories of that ilk. If I can find her essay about the subject, I'll post a link. People who aren't from there might not realize how insulting some of the characterizations are. I know more than a few people who bristle at the word "hillbilly" and consider it a slur.

I know more than a few people who bristle at the word "hillbilly" and consider it a slur. I spent my college years in a part of Appalachia. I had many friends in college that were from towns in the heart of it. I knew people with experiences not far from what Vance depicts. I don’t think he speaks for everyone from the region, but he’s true to what he knew and saw. As for the word - I think it has something in common with some other slurs where there are some who find it highly offensive and something that should not be said while others look at it as a “if you’re going to say it about me, I’m going to take ownership of it and make it mean something else.” I think the mistake made is expecting everyone who had an experience or common upbringing to remember it the same or feel the same about it.

CHEF YAY YAY YAY! One of my favorite movies. Jon Favreau (with Roy Choi producing) directs and stars in a show about a chef finding his way with work and family.

I watched Hillbilly Elegy last night. I went in with an admitted bias as I’ve said because I thought the best parts of the book were not his story and could not be part of a movie. I thought it was fine, but never felt the story had true heart. For people hearing Vances story for the first time I can understand where it would be more impressive - he’s got a great story. But I thought it tried to cover so much of a span that it wasn’t done in a way to really feel invested in it. It felt more like a highlight reel.
