Hillbilly Elegy directed by Ron Howard : "A Yale law student drawn back to his hometown grapples with family history, Appalachian values and the American dream." I hadn't ready J. D. Vance's memoir but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Amy Adams and Glenn Close star.

Hubby and I are almost done with SEASON 1 of GOLIATH. There are 4 total seasons with a new one coming out in 2021. www.imdb.com/title/tt4687880/ A disgraced lawyer, now an ambulance chaser, gets a case that could bring him redemption or at least revenge on the firm which expelled him.

Okay, I caved and binge watched Bridgerton.
{Discussion of my view of film} {} I was able to separate from the book as best I could and I loved it. I was a Regency book genre junkie back in the day and kept waiting for references to Almacks Dance Hall (although they did have young Lady Cowper as a pivotal villain - her mother is one of doyennes of Almacks and she, not the queen, would have rated that season's debutantes). The Queen and her troubles were a bonus as the Prince might show up, but that is as close as it would get to the royal chambers.
Anyway, they showed Gentleman Jackson's boxing saloon, without naming it; and the Promenade was in Hyde Park.
There was one exchange in a courtyard between Daphne and her mother (?) that made no sense to the flow of the video, but was straight out of the book and I sat up straight hearing it. I finally reconciled within myself an older voice narrating Lady Whistledown's words...though I kept waiting for the reveal; which was done in a most satisfying way.
Another easily reconciled connection was Lady Danbury as the ongoing connection to the Duke. In the books, she holds social events, but is feared for her cutting words, and it was the tutor who took young Simon to London to see his father. Oh, and the are horrible musicians forced by their Mama to play a concert every year. That was cut in favor of real musicians in a concert hall, thank goodness.
NOT the book, but drawn from and now I can't wait for season 2 and wonder how they will draw from Anthony's story and his list of 13.

Death to 2020 - a snarky mockumentary with something to offend everyone. Alice in Borderland - Japanese series (dubbed in English) where people are forced to play life-or-death games. I thought it was great, looking forward to season 2. The Mess You Leave Behind - Spanish mystery-thriller that kept me guessing until the end. Very good.

I'm a bit late to the game but spent part of New Year's Day watching Derry Girls. I really enjoyed it. The other part of the day, I watch Best Leftovers Ever! That was a fun show where three home cooks "redo" leftovers.

Night Stalker! It is a four episode limited series (so you can binge it without taking a whole day!), mostly narrated by the two detectives who had, not long before the Night Stalker crimes started, solved the Hillside Strangler case. It is outstanding for a crime documentary with great story telling and exceptional cinematography! I'd highly recommend! It's very well done. I remember clearly when, after hearing of Ramirez's crime rampage through Los Angeles County, he came to San Francisco to continue his killing spree! Dianne Feinstein was our Mayor then, having taken over after Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk were asassonated and just a week later Jonestown happened. We were rattled enough, and then Richard Ramirez came to town.

I started watching "Pretend it's a City" a documentary starring Fran Libowitz. OMG!!! I LOVE IT! I have been laughing out loud. My favorite line so far is when she commented on Bloomberg putting lounge chairs in Times Square saying that this would be 'permanent'. Fran commented, "nothing is permanent in NYC you hick!" Died! She is also being interviewed in the Player's Club bar, and when my parents were alive, they were members. I would have been happy just to see her grumpily walk around NYC.

Disenchantment is the new show from Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons & Futurama). Basically Futurama but in fantasy-medieval world. It revolves around a rebellious & troublemaking princess locking horns with her bossy but dimwitted father, the king. It starts off as just one off jokes but gets into a serious & gripping plot as it goes along. Very good show.

Radium Girls. I've read about this horrible workplace tragedy for young women in the early last century for years. It's good and shows how companies, knowing full well that their products are dangerous for workers, can harm and kill workers for their profits. We've just had an administration that has canceled workplace regulations for millions of American workers that were intended to protect them. One step forward, two steps back.

I was happy to see that Blown Away second season is coming soon.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - fourth and last season, and it was sort of a disappointing mess.
History of Swear Words - silly, sometimes informative series hosted by an over-the-top Nicolas Cage. It could have been better, but it was good for a couple laughs.
Night Stalker - I blew through all four episodes in one morning, it was so well done. I'll never understand the moron "groupies" who sent him letters and nude pics like he was some hero. I mean, really??!

We got about half way through it. The story is fascinating and horrifying but I felt the movie went overboard with the whole Socialist angle. It did spark a good discussion and I'm finally going to get around to reading the book.

Can you imagine a time that you had no right to a vote? A voice in our democracy? At this time in history, Socialism was fighting for women's sufferage. Capitalism wasn't interested! We advance step by step. Let's face it, we are chock full of "Socialist" popular programs in our country! Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, the infrastructure, etc. ,etc. We are not each of us all alone, we all give to help each other. That is why they try to make "Socialism" seem like a nasty thing. If you finish watching this show, you'd see that by joining together, we can protect ourselves! All of us! No matter what you call it! We're all in this together!

I am almost finished with Bridgerton, and I love it. Shame on me for not watching it sooner as it has my beloved Nicola Coughlan in it! I have to say I absolutely love Lady Danbury but the one character, if you will, I cannot get behind is the Queen. I truly feel that they made her to be such a witch and decided to forego the warmth that she was said to have shown to many, and I wish they showed more of her obsession with botany.. Kew Gardens are still a wonderful attraction today.

I finally finished Bridgerton this weekend. I loved the costumes and I got a little bored and frustrated with the Duke and Dutchusses' "issue", it was a nice ending to the season all around. And yes, more of the Duke!!
