I liked Shadow and Bone, but disagree with a review I read that compared it to Game of Thrones. It's definitely of lower quality that GOT. I'd put it on par with The Shannara Chronicles. Good production value and costuming, but not super elevated and mature storytelling, which I guess is reflective of it being based on a YA novel. Still enjoyable, just not the next GOT (which nothing ever will be). I also didn't find the sound production to be very good, especially with respect to dialogue. I normally don't have trouble with accents at all but I found myself straining to hear and understand certain characters. I kept turning the sound up and up. It was sort of ridiculous. It's not as if you need to project your voice like on stage, but at least don't mumble!

I didn’t understand the comparison to GOT either. Shadow & Bone is a completely different story with an altogether different audience. Perhaps they are trying to make the series “happen” by linking it to GOT.? I enjoyed the storytelling on its own. The main Sun Summoner storyline is compelling along with the Crows. I’m most intrigued by Nina’s journey, however. She’s testing long held beliefs, and being forced to align with folks she’s never known. We’ll see where it all goes in season 2. I hope Milo makes an appearance again 😁

I've started it at two episodes, but I can't take too much of sand, grit and more of the same. At the moment there really don't seem to be any good-hearted characters (except the leads) and it all looks like Pirates of the Caribean, which I hated.
Plucky, Spunky and running.

For me, it felt like something from Freeform or another platform that caters to a younger crowd. Too much junior high school flirting. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not on the same level of GOT AT ALL.
I didn't hate it or anything, but I didn't love it either. It was okay. I also realize that I'm probably not the audience for it, since I'm a fifty-something woman and not a Young Adult
I read Leigh Bardugo's first novel for adults, Ninth House, last year. If they adapt that for TV (and it is intended to be a series of books), I'd definitely watch.

Any new fantasy show will be automatically compared to Game of Thrones. Lets face it GOT opened up a new genre and made it acceptable to the regular viewing audience. Yeah for that. I am not a die hard Game of Thrones fan but I respect the work that went into that series and again showing that a good story does not necessarily have to be placed in the "real world". The characters in the novel Shadow and Bones are aged 14 thru 18 or 19. It is pretty obvious that the cast of the series are a good 10 years older than that. I appreciate the minimal nudity and thankfully no gratuitous sex scenes. I liked the longing looks, there were stories behind them all that I hope to see. There were multiple story arcs that added layers to the first season. Absolutely disagree about this being on the same level as The Shannara Chronicles. The Shannara Chronicles was a bit higher than The Adventures of Hercules or Xena, Warrior Princess. After that you can bring in the Freeform series Shadowhunters and Siren and cable series The Librarians. Way better then the Winx Saga. The biggest problem with Shadow and Bone was the sound. I had to turn up the volume and activate the subtitles. I really needed it at first as the soundtrack obliterated the actors voices then I left it on for the rest of the series just to make sure I was hearing all the new terminology that goes with a new fantasy's world building. I don't know why reviewers and fans of other fantasy shows always bash new ventures. GOT is GOT, Shadow and Bones is Shadow and Bones. Each series should be enjoyed on it's own merits. Each show I mentioned in previous paragraphs I have enjoyed. Well Shadowhunter's could be a slough but at least it had an ending.

Each show I mentioned in previous paragraphs I have enjoyed. Well Shadowhunter's could be a slough but at least it had an ending. I'd say that GOT opened up the genre on TV, but in recent-ish years, Peter Jackson did that on film with the LOTR films. Those projects are examples, IMO, of things that transcend genre - both the TV show and films AND especially the source material. I've not read Leigh Bardugo's books, but I'd hazard a guess that they're not up to the quality of Martin and definitely not Tolkien.
I'm a diehard GOT fan, books and show. Nothing on TV in that genre, especially, can touch it for production value, acting, storytelling, anything. As far as quality and originality in a different realm of fantasy/syfy, I'd put Westworld right up there.
ITA, The comparisons are inevitable. I was going to mention Shadowhunters too. I don't mind the googly-eyed love story stuff, but it did flag the show for me as targeted at a younger audience, at least in that genre.
I felt the same way about the sound. I don't know if they had the actors mic'd (probably not) or if they were relying on boom operators or what. Whatever the case may be, a good amount of the dialogue, especially when characters were walking or moving, was muffled. The actors - and several of these were lead actors - didn't project their voices well enough. It's one thing to speak in a quieter tone when it's a close-up, but you can't do that in a two- or three-shot where you're moving. Obviously, I'm not an expert, but I'm a viewer and I couldn't hear some of the darned dialogue!

so what did you think of The Irregulars? I got half way through and will probably finish it but there were issues?

Haven't watched it yet. I'll put it on my watch list and let you know what I think Oh, forgot to mention Locke & Key - sometimes the kids were so stupid I wanted to scream. The Order was good. Yeah, Locke & Key had a ton of potential and I liked the two leads, but they just did nothing with that potential. I wasn't surprised when it got canceled. Still, it was disappointing because it could have been a really good show. Never got into The Order.
Okay, I've watched a few episodes of The Irregulars now. Um....it's okay. It's one of my little bugaboos, but I hate period dramas that use colloquial language (or music) of the present day. Drives me crazy. So far, someone has called Holmes and Watson something like, "the guys we work for" and someone else said, "What the actual f***" which I'm pretty sure is NOT something that was said in Victorian London. Also, another character referred to brain cells, which I'd guess is not something a street kid in that time period would have a clue about.
I'm going to keep watching for now. I don't know if you've noticed, but there's not a helluva lot of new TV on right now. Any port in a storm

While I like the concept of the Irregulars and had a wow moment with the diverse casting (Remember Bridgerton) what I don't like is that these kids are healthy, well fed, and literate, and have a great deal of scientific knowledge which simply was not available do the lower classes much less the upper classes in late 1800's England. I have seen enough of the British house shows to know what they are portraying is not realistic. I don't know if you have ever seen Victorian Slum House but living in the slums in London was hard, hard, hard work. The entire family pooled their resources to make flowers, or match boxes. It is a bit of a stretch to suspend your belief with this series. Per Digital Spy as recently as 12/04/21 Locke and Key season 2 and season 3 were OK'ed.

Bearcata - what is with all these "x&y" shows!? I was thinking of Cloak & Dagger I did try watching Locke & Key and it just didn't grab me.
I also thought it was odd to have one of the female leads on The Irregulars wearing pants. That just would not have happened. Agree with your points too. Basically, it feels like "The CW Goes to Victorian London."
Oh! And there was a moment where all the rich folks were playing cricket and a couple kissed openly and then a young woman was lifting her skirts up to adjust her garters. Like it's a brothel. Please

Please I was thinking about watching the Irregulars since I finished Shadow and Bone (which I DID like.. mostly because it put Ben Barns and Zoë Wanakamer on my screen) but I guess they already canceled The Irregulars. Guess I will find something else to watch now, I don't see the point in watching it if it is only one season.

Watching Ragnarock on Netflix in Norwegian with English subtitles for the umpteenth time. At some point recently they promised a 2nd season but haven't seen anything about that since.

Ragnarok trailer for season 2 is out and it is as intriguing as the trailer for Lucifer, the final episodes.
Really, if you are into myths and the fight for climate, Ragnarok and Ragnarok 2 are super delicious. I've read that it is the most underrated show on Netflix; and as I'm the only one (I think) talking about it, that may be true.
ETA: Netflix is so glitzy lately...trouble loading, freezing. It's just them as my other subscriptions are just humming along. They better have it fixed by next Thursday!

Dirty Money. It is a series that exposes conmen around the world. It has an episode on Jared Kushner and another on the former "president" detailing how these grifters and their families have conned many Americans into believing lies over years about purported "successes" that are really based on actual failures. It may be shocking to some. To me, nah. That so many Americans can be hoodwinked... that's the shock! Highly recommend!

Army of the Dead - ridiculously accurate headshots, violent, silly, over the top splattery gore, a little humor...I loved it. Bonus points for a freaking zombie tiger.
I want a sequel.

I enjoyed watching Selena, the series. I was pregnant the year she was murdered so I didn't watch the news too much and I knew very little about her story. I enjoyed learning a little about her life, even knowing the tragic ending. I did find myself not wanting to watch the last couple of episodes but I did finish it.

The Lady and the Dale. A four part documentary about the extraordinary story of an early trans woman who had a rather shady past as a conman who, after transition, tried to develop a three-wheel vehicle (the Dale) in the early '70s. It's a remarkable story and I highly recommend it!

RAGNAROK - oh, my so much character development - especially for the younger brother coming out as Loki. The second season takes the first season and stretches it more into the Myth. It was wonderful. I've been a fan since the beginning and it did not disappoint.
LUCIFER - on the other hand, is still a whiny, complaining, growth-deprived character. The best episode from what I've seen so far is the musical woven into crime solving. I'll finish out this season and hope their final season has toned down the whine. I wish Ella would be shown the truth before the end of this season.

Growth happens!

Who Killed Sara? - There are two seasons and I binged it all. Spanish murder mystery that is dubbed to English. This is up there as one of the most ridiculous story lines I have ever seen. The amount of twists and turns can be exhausting but the sheer hilarity of where the plot goes is just nuts. And I loved every minute of it. I said out loud several times while watching this, "You've got to be kidding me"?. Very much enjoyed this series and hope there is a 3rd season.
