Saw “The Darkest Minds” over the weekend. It was a good screen adaptation of the novel. I enjoyed the YA book series, so I was interested in seeing the story unfold on screen. I wanted more, but I guess they were planning for a series of movies. You really had to have read the books to fully understand what was happening. I’d love to see the series continue, but think there’s YA dystopian movie fatigue unfortunately. Glad I got see this portion of the story in this format. springmaiden - What would you say is an age-range appropriate for this movie? My daughter is 10 and wants to see it but I wasn't sure if some themes were too mature. There were some young kids accompanied by adults in the theater. They seemed excited to see the film, and seemed to be engaged throughout the film. There’s fighting at the camp, and couple painful treatment scenes. They don’t delve too far into the teen romance. If she’s read the books, nothing will be unexpected. Oh, there is one scene where one of mind reading kids forces a soldier to shoot themselves, but I can’t remember if the actual act is off screen or on screen. The movie spends the most time on the camaraderie of the four main kids. There’s some humor and good messages about family in those scenes. Hope that helps!

Thanks SpringMaiden!!!
I can't watch horror movies anymore. It's too stressful. It's weird too because modern "horror" movies are more suspense than the horror/gore flicks I grew up with in the 80s/90s
ETA: We watched American Made this weekend. It was good - kind of like Blow

The Greatest Showman - I watched it twice I loved it so much. I purchased the soundtrack because it's one of those musicals that is infectious and you can't get the songs out of your head. But in a good way. Yes there were some flaws with the plot but I could care less the music was FANTASTIC.
Love,Simon - What a GEM!!!! I related to this one so much as my brother came out awhile back and it was emotionally scary for him and I wish I could have taken all his anxiety away. I laughed, I cried, I had a perma smile on my face. This movie took me by surprise, really well done.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser - just OK. Sort of a Cyrano story set in high school with a homely girl, a cheerleader and a quarterback and texting the wrong person. I got where they were going with it, but I never really FELT the romantic connection between the characters that they clearly wanted you to feel. These kids never had any deep conversations. It's was all, "What animal would you be?"-type stuff.
That movie was in sharp contrast and probably more so because the darling Noah Centineo plays the romantic lead in both that movie and another recent Netflix movie, the far superior and super charming To All the Boys I've Loved Before. The story wasn't unusual - guy and girl pretend to be in a relationship to make others jealous - but it really rose about that cliche, in part because the characters actually got to know each other in a meaningful way. Definitely Seriously adorable cast and a sweet story. Plus, Jon Corbett as dad-aged eye candy! HIGHLY recommend it.
I watched Irreplaceable You I love Michiel Huisman and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. I wanted to like it more than I did. It was touching, but the plot - a young wife discovers she has terminal cancer and sets out to find her husband a new mate - didn't quite work the way it could have. Don't get me wrong, I still cried like a baby, but it could have been better.
The Fundamentals of Caring with Paul Rudd as a man starting over and working as a caregiver to a young, sheltered man who has a form of muscular dystrophy. In an effort to help the young man expand his horizons, Rudd's character takes him on a road trip to see a bunch of classically American roadside attractions (something he's obsessed with). Really sweet and more deeply emotional than I'd imagined.

The Greatest Showman - why haven't I watched this before now?? What a fun, sweet movie. I want to watch it again. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - I don't think I'll ever tire of watching dinosaurs run amok. Or of Chris Pratt.

Upgrade - If you're into action flicks with a side of futuristic at all then I cannot recommend this indie film enough. FANTASTIC. Original. Loved it. This was made available to rent on our ON DEMAND last night and one of the best action flicks I have seen. The twist at the end I did't pick up on and I thought it was going a predictable way but then it went another way and I thought it was really well done. Pretty short movie which keeps it moving quickly. It is violent but some of those scenes my mouth fell open at how it was done. Crazy. My hubby never likes anything and he loved this. I finally got to watch this over the weekend - and you're right, it was fantastic! I didn't really know any of the actors, had never heard of the film, but...wow. So good. And my husband is the same as yours, he doesn't like too many movies. This one had him texting a few of his friends afterwards, telling them to watch it. Any sci-fi/Black Mirror fans here, go see Upgrade. It's crazy good.

Saw The Book Club at my local library last night. Had wanted to see it in the movies but in a blink it was gone. I guess it did not do well but I thought it was a very cute movie for what it was and it was nice to see women 65+ as leads. I know Jane Fonda has had work done but my goodness does she look fabulous for 80! And that body of hers! Incredible! Andy Garcia as Diane Keaton's love interest...swoon!

Well, I TRIED to watch Nappily Ever After on Netflix (LOVE Sanaa Lathan) but at around the 15 minute mark, the audio for the movie started over. Instead of the dialogue in the scene, it was the Netflix "bong bong" and then the opening credits music came on. I'll try again another day, but it was super annoying. I tried several times to get it to work, but it does the same thing in the same place no matter what I tried I reported the issue, so hopefully they'll fix it.

I saw A Simple Favor this weekend and I loved it! As someone that is into true crime stories I saw a couple of the twists coming but there were others that I didn't see at all. Some funny bits too. Would absolutely recommend!

Finally got the sound to work on Nappily Ever After and watched it last night. Really nice, albeit predictable.
I also had a little Adam Devine double feature with When We First Met and Game Over, Man! The first movie was a quirky romantic comedy with time travel. Cute. The second was a gross-out kind of take-off on Die Hard. NOT good. I stuck with it until the end, but it was a slog.
Today I watched Extinction with Michael Pena and Lizzy Kaplan. It's a kind of alien invasion story set in the future and with a nice twist in the middle. Also watched How it Ends with Theo James and Forest Whittaker It's a during-apocalyptic story of a man and his father-in-law trying to get across the country to Seattle to find their fiancee/daughter in the midst of an "event" that has taken out all communications in the US. Not world-changing, but well done.

Finally Watched Nappily Ever After yesterday. I really liked it I could Identify with some of that need to be perfect and finding the right person to handle your personality highs and lows.
I also watched Oceans 8 and I really loved it I think they did a good job on the all female version.
I have a couple movie plans for Today Won't you be my Neighbor and Greatest Showman.

American Moon by Massimo Mazzucco. An excellent 3 hour documentary that was just released. Undeniable that every scrap of footage we saw of the Apollo moon landings was created in a studio. It was a military psyops during the height of the cold war with the Russians. Unfortunately it means we don't have the benefit of data from manned missions beyond low earth orbit which is why the current missions, to the moon or Mars, are taking so long and will keep getting delayed. We don't yet know what dangers astronauts would face and what it will take to do it safely.
Next July is the 50th anniversary of Armstrong's "walk". I hope there is some official acknowledgement by then.

A Star Is Born - I'll preface this review that I had no clue what the movie was about other than what was in the previews. I;m aware of the other remakes but didn't know the plot. Bring tissues. I was BLOWN away by Bradley Cooper. Talk about getting into character. Phenomenal. Music was fantastic. Lady Gaga was really good. Her voice is beautiful. Andrew Dice Clay even did a great job. Sam Elliot is wonderful. A powerful movie about love, sadness and addiction. One of the best movies I've seen.

It Follows. I was disappointed in it. I heard that it was supposed to be real scary, but I didn't find it to be that way. I liked the music though.

Finding your feet.
It's much like Calendar girls etc, but better. The singing and dancing, the sad ( adultery) and happy ( finding love again) parts. Not a teenager in sight, we absolutely loved it!

Venom - Tom Hardy is the ONLY reason I saw this. I would watch him stain wood floors. That sounded better in my head. Anyway, surprisingly funny and follows an anti-hero plot with lots of action and in general many people sweating. That's all I got. It was good.

I watched Private Life on Netflix over the weekend. I would have known nothing about the movie but i saw Molly Shanon promoting it last week and I was curious. I really had to search it out on my Netflix! It starts Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti as a couple going through fertility treatments, and I've got to say it's one of the most honest looks at the struggles of infertility I've seen. Both lead actors do a great job in their parts. It is a bit slower paced at times, but very compelling and honest.

We finally had a chance to watch "The Notebook." As we are in our 70s, it was very meaningful to us. And I may stop crying any day now.
