Bobby Womack was a singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He was born in Cleveland. He began his career in the early 1950s as the lead singer of his family musical group the Valentinos and as Sam Cooke's backing guitarist, His career spanned more than 60 years and multiple styles, including R&B, jazz, soul, rock and roll, doo-wop, and gospel. Around 1965, he relocated to Memphis where he worked at Chips Moman's American Studios. He played guitar on recordings by Joe Tex and the Box Tops & on several of Aretha Franklin's albums, including Lady Soul. His work as a songwriter caught the eye of music executives after Wilson Pickett took a liking to some of Womack's songs and insisted on recording them. Among the songs were "I'm a Midnight Mover" and "I'm in Love" Bobby died at his home in Tarzana, California at the age of 70 on June 27, 2014. During his career he released 28 studio albums, 3 Live albums & 47 singles. This was the title song to his 5th album & it came out in 1972. The album was actually the soundtrack to an action crime film directed by Barry Shear and starring Yaphet Kotto, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Franciosa and Paul Benjamin. The film is set in Harlem and takes its name from 110th Street, the traditional dividing line between Harlem and Central Park that functioned as an informal boundary of race and class in 1970s New York City. The song was a No. 19 hit on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart in 1973 and was later featured in Quentin Tarantino's 1997 blaxploitation homage Jackie Brown. Marcy Playground is an alternative rock band consisting of three members: John Wozniak (lead vocals, guitar), Dylan Keefe (bass), and Shlomi Lavie (drums). The band is named after the Marcy Open grade school in Minneapolis, which is the alternative school John Wozniak attended. He chose the name because many of his songs were inspired by his childhood. They began as a group in the late 1990s. During the career of the band, they released 4 albums, even though they are still active & still touring their most recent album was released in 2009. This song comes from that album. They have had songs that were a part of many different soundtracks including Simply Irresistible, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back & Zack & Miri Make A Porno. The album was called Leaving Wonderland ...In A Fit Of Rage!. The album was originally going to be a John Wozniak solo album, but in the end it was recorded in part with original band member Dylan Keefe. They added drummer Shlomi Lavie after the album was completed. There are a lot of things I like in music, but hearing someone finger pick an acoustic guitar ranks right up there at the top. Jimmy Buffett is a singer-songwriter, musician, author, actor, and businessman. He was born on Christmas Day 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Sometimes the info on these folks turns out to be pretty surprising. For instance, I did not know that out of college he worked as a correspondent for Billboard magazine in Nashville, & that he was responsible for breaking the news of the separation of Flatt and Scruggs. Nor did I know that he was good friends with Jim Croce & considered him a mentor & that when Jim died ABC Dunhill chose Jimmy to fill the void. During his career he has released 29 studio albums, 9 compilation albums, 14 live albums, 8 specialty albums, and 67 singles. He has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, and he has a net worth of $550 million. This song comes from his album titled Living And Dying In 3 / 4 Time. It was his 4th album & came out in 1974. It was his 1st charting album & included the single "Come Monday" which hit #30 on the Hot 100 and number 3 Easy Listening and number 58 Country. It also included the song that led to his 1st controversy: The earliest controversy was his recording of "God's Own Drunk" on the album Living and Dying in 3/4 Time. In 1983, the son of the late entertainer Lord Buckley sued Buffett for $11 million for copyright infringement, claiming that Buffett took parts of the monologue from Buckley's A Tribute to Buckley and claimed it as his own work in "God's Own Drunk". The suit also alleged that Buffett's "blasphemous" rendition presented to the public a distorted impression of Lord Buckley. A court injunction against Buffett prevented him from performing the song until the lawsuit was settled or resolved, so starting in 1983, Buffett would get to the part of his show where he would normally perform "God's Own Drunk", he would say that he was not allowed to play it because of the lawsuit and instead played a song he wrote called "The Lawyer and the Asshole" in which he accuses Buckley's son and lawyers of being greedy and tells them to "kiss his ass." The outcome of the court case is unknown, but Jimmy brought "God's Own Drunk" back to the setlist in 1988 and since then has only played it rarely. John David "Moon" Martin was a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Altus, Oklahoma. He was given the nickname "Moon" because many of his songs had the word moon in the lyrics. Originally a rockabilly artist, he wrote the songs "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)", made famous by the English singer Robert Palmer, and "Cadillac Walk", made famous by the American singer Willy DeVille. Moon originally recorded both of those songs but it took others to make them a hit. He died on May 11, 2020 of natural causes in Encino,California at the age of 74. During his career he released 4 albums & a pair of French imports. This song comes from his 1978 album called Shots from a Cold Nightmare. It was his 1st album & was the one that included both of those songs referenced above. Hot Night in Dallas by Moon Martin www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWyuQ87M0Bo

Colour Club is a smooth jazz group that was founded in the 1990s by Skipper Wise and Les Pierce. A record producer, Pierce worked with Take 6, Herb Alpert, and Patti LaBelle. Wise led the group Windows during the 1980s and '90s but left the music business in the late 1990s to lead the technology company Blue Microphones. Wise and Pierce formed the group as a combination of smooth jazz and hip hop. This song comes from their self-titled album. It was their 1st of just 3 albums & was released in 1994. The album was branded as the new movement in Europe called “Acid Jazz”. I have never listened to much smooth jazz before, but I find that when I do, I always seem to really like it. These guys are good musicians & vocalist Lisa Thomas certainly deserves more than just one listen. Chicago by Colour Club www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU3QOJOD16g

The Wild Magnolias are a Mardi Gras Indian tribe who also record and play as a funk musical act from New Orleans, Louisiana. A group calling itself the Wild Magnolias, extends at least back into the 1950s. The group's lead member was called the Big Chief, and at least three Big Chiefs are known to have headed the band for short stints prior to 1964. Theodore "Bo" Dollis ("Big Chief") was the leader of the group from 1964 until his passing in 2015. He was the 4th Big Chief to lead them. Now they are led by Gerard "Little Bo" Dollis ("Big Chief"), the 5th in line. At the height of the group's popularity, they booked dates at Carnegie Hall and the Capital Centre in Washington, D.C.. In 1990. In 1992, the Magnolias toured Europe as part of Willy DeVille's "New Orleans Revue" (along with Dr John, Johnny Adams, and Zachary Richard). This song comes from their 1999 album called Life Is A Carnival. One thing about it, you don’t hear this type of music from anywhere other than New Orleans. Fats Domino, was a pianist and singer-songwriter born in New Orleans. His real name was Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. Elvis Presley declared him a "huge influence on me when I started out" and described him as "the real king of rock 'n' roll". The Beatles were also heavily influenced by Domino. Fats himself did not define his work as rock and roll, saying of the genre "It wasn't anything but the same rhythm and blues I'd been playing down in New Orleans". Four of his records were named to the Grammy Hall of Fame for their significance: "Blueberry Hill", "Ain't That A Shame", "Walking to New Orleans" and "The Fat Man". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its first group of inductees in 1986. The Associated Press estimates that during his career, he "sold more than 110 million records". Doug Supernaw was a country music artist from Bryan Texas. He moved to Nashville in 1987, where he found work as a session songwriter. After four years in Nashville, he moved back to Texas, where he founded a band called Texas Steel. Some folks seem to be born under a black cloud. A series of injuries nearly ended his career after his first album's release. After recovering from a broken neck suffered while surfing, he was involved in a head-on car collision. Finally, he was hospitalized after a nearly-fatal case of food poisoning. Doug announced on February 4, 2019, that he had been diagnosed with stage IV lung and bladder cancer. He died at his home on November 13, 2020, at age 60. During his career he was able to release just 4 albums. This song comes from his 1st album. It was called Red & Rio Grand & came out in 1993. The album got to #27 on the Country albums chart & #147 on the top 200. This was the 2nd single from the album & was his 1st big hit. The song got to #4 for him. The song caused local controversy in Reno, Nevada due to its portrayal of the city. Then-mayor Pete Sferrazza thought that the song portrayed the city as "heartless", and one country station refused to play it due to complaints from listeners. Among the album era's prominent acts, Springsteen has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and more than 64 million albums in the United States, making him one of the world's best-selling artists. He has earned numerous awards for his work, including 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and a Special Tony Award (for Springsteen on Broadway). He was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, named MusiCares person of the year in 2013, and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2016. John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band is an American rock band from Rhode Island which began its career in 1972. The band was largely ignored by the major labels due to persistent comparisons to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. They finally achieved international success when producer Kenny Vance, offered them the score to a movie soundtrack he was helming based on a best-selling novel about a legendary bar band, Eddie and the Cruisers. This song comes from that soundtrack which will eventually go on to become a quadruple platinum album. The studio re-released the soundtrack in the fall of 1984. Nine months after the film was released in theaters, the main song in the film, "On the Dark Side", was the number one song in the country on Billboard's Mainstream, Rock, and Heatseeker charts; and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The movie starred Tom Berenger. Joe Pantoliano & Ellen Barkin among others. The music producer/supervisor for the film, Kenny Vance, appears on screen as Lew Eisen, the 1964 record company executive who refuses to accept the band's second album. By the way, Kenny was also one of the original members of Jay & The Americans who had multiple top 40 hits between 1962 & 1970. John Trubee is a musician and poet known for his bizarre and amusing songs. He is known as a controversial American writer/musician active since the late 70s. Along with his backup band Ugly Janitors Of America he recorded a number of albums full of prank phone calls, poetry and noisy improvisation pieces. Responding to a scam advertisement asking for song lyrics he wrote a deliberately bad piece entitled Stevie Wonder's Penis. When the advertiser responded praising his work and asking for $40 to set it to music Trubee sent off the money and received the song "A Blind Man's Penis" in return - the advertiser having changed the words. All of that said, this is some pretty tight music right here. No controversial lyrics, just damn fine playing. I really wish I could find who these guys were. The violin & bass players are pretty incredible. Driving Around New Jersey on a Summer Night by John Trubee www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bxA764nOK8

Edwin Starr, was a singer and songwriter born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland. His real name was Charles Edwin Hatcher. He is probably most famous for his number-one hit "War". His intense vocals transformed a Temptations album track into a number one chart success. The song spent 3 weeks in the top position on the U.S. Billboard charts and has become an anthem for the antiwar movement and a cultural milestone that continues to resound in movie soundtracks and hip hop music samples. It sold over three million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Edwin was inducted into the inaugural class of the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame at Cleveland State University in August 2013, and into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2017. In later life he became a hero on England's northern soul circuit and moved to England in 1983, continuing to live there for the remainder of his life. He died on April 2, 2003, from a heart attack at his Nottinghamshire home. He was 61. During his career he released 14 albums with the most recent one coming in 1991. This was the title song to his 6th album & the soundtrack album to the 1973 movie starring Fred Williamson. It was a sequel to Black Caesar. Way down on the list of credited actors in this movie is a lady named Mindi Miller. She is credited as “Tough Bikini Woman.” Now there is a resume filler! Earlier today we had Edwin Starr telling us it was Hell up in Harlem. Now we get The Vibrations telling us why that is. The Vibrations were an American soul vocal group from Los Angeles. They were active from the mid-1950s to 1976. Most notable among the group's hit singles were "My Girl Sloopy" (1964) and "Love in Them There Hills" (1968). The members of the group included Don Bradley, Carl Fisher, Dave Govan, James Johnson and Ricky Owen. Sometimes it takes these folks a bit of changing things up to get it right. The group initially began recording as The Jay Hawks, and had a hit in 1956 with "Stranded in the Jungle" #18. After a few lineup changes, the group hit again in 1961 with the song "The Watusi" #25 & at the same time they had a hit under the name The Marathons with "Peanut Butter #20. So, they had all of their hit singles under group names other than The Vibrations. Maybe the didn’t get it right after all. During their career they released 6 albums. This song comes from their final album. It was called Takin A New Step & it came out in 1972. Ain't No Greens in Harlem by The Vibrations www.youtube.com/watch?v=KacGzWDFZNU

Dolly Parton is a singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman. She was born in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in Pittman Center, Tennessee. She has won 11 Grammy Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award; 10 Country Music Association Awards, including Entertainer of the Year and is one of only seven female artists to win the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year Award; 5 Academy of Country Music Awards, also including Entertainer of the Year; 4 People's Choice Awards; and 3 American Music Awards. She has been installed into so many Halls Of Fame that they are too numerous to list here, but her songs have also been honored. I Will Always Love You, Jolene, & Coat Of Many Colors are in The Grammy Hall Of Fame. During her career she has released 52 studio albums (consisting of 48 solo studio albums, 2 studio albums with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, 1 studio album with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette and 1 studio album with Kenny Rogers), 9 live albums, 6 soundtrack albums, and approximately 222 compilation albums globally. This song comes from her 11th album. It was called My Tennessee Mountain Home & it came out in 1973. It is a concept album about her childhood in rural East Tennessee, the album begins with a recitation of the first letter Parton wrote to her parents shortly after moving from her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee to Nashville in 1964. Most of the songs are fond reminiscences of her youth and family, though in one song, "In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)", Parton candidly admits that though she is grateful for the lessons the poverty of her childhood taught her, she is in no hurry to repeat the experience. The final cut on the album, "Down on Music Row", recounts her first days on Nashville's Music Row, trying to get a record deal, and thanking those who helped her along the way, making specific mention of Chet Atkins and RCA's Bob Ferguson. Waylon Jennings was a singer, songwriter, and musician, as well as an actor. He was born in Littlefield, Texas. He pioneered the Outlaw Movement in country music with Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, Kris Kristofferson & his wife Jessi Colter, among others. Decades of excessive smoking and drug use took a large toll on his health, he was also overweight and his poor diet resulted in his developing Type II diabetes. In 1988, four years after quitting cocaine, he finally ended his six-pack-a-day smoking habit. On February 13, 2002, Waylon died in his sleep from complications of diabetes at the age of 64, at his home in Chandler, Arizona. In October 2001, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, but he was unable to attend the ceremony due to the pain caused by his diabetes. On July 6, 2006, he was inducted to Guitar Center's Rock Walk in Hollywood, California. Jessi Colter attended the ceremony along with Kris Kristofferson, who was inducted on the same day. On June 20, 2007, he was posthumously awarded the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music. During the ceremony, Ray Scott sang "Rainy Day Woman" and the award was accepted by Buddy Jennings. This song was originally recorded 1969 but went unreleased until RCA Nashville put out a box set of his material called Nashville Rebel in 2006. According to Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine, it is "the first comprehensive, multi-label Waylon Jennings retrospective ever assembled," comprising ninety-two songs recorded between 1958 and 1994, with selections from the majority of the singer's recording career.
