Adrian Gurvitz is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer from North London.
His early bands the Gun, Three Man Army and the Baker Gurvitz Army were major influences to the first wave of the British hard rock circuit. He also gained notability as a lead guitarist, known for his intricate, hard-driving solos. He was ranked at No. 9 on Melody Maker’s "Best Guitarists in the World" list.
He comes to this whole rock thing honestly. His dad was the tour manager for Cliff Richard and the Shadows and the Kinks. Adrian started playing guitar at the age of eight and by age 15, he was touring in early bands like Screaming Lord Sutch, Billie Davis, and Crispian St. Peters.
He has released albums as a solo artist & as a member of multiple bands. This song comes from his Classic collection. It was his 4th solo album & came out in 1982.

Saint Etienne is a British band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs.
Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs were childhood friends and former music journalists, who once had a fanzine called Caff which had developed into a record label by 1989. They originally planned that Saint Etienne would use a variety of different lead singers, and their 1991 debut album, Foxbase Alpha – influenced by sources such as club culture, 1960s pop, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's Dazzle Ships – features several vocalists, including Moira Lambert and Donna Savage. However, after working with Sarah Cracknell on "Nothing Can Stop Us", they decided to make her the permanent vocalist, and she has written or co-written many of the band's songs.
During their career they have released 10 studio albums, 2 soundtrack albums, 9 compilation albums, 2 remix albums, 7 mix albums, 2 video albums, 1 box set, 4 extended plays, 38 singles, and 5 promotional singles.
This song comes from their 2000 album called Sound of Water. It was the 5th of their 10 albums so far with the most one happening in 2021. I don’t see any evidence that they have ever broken through on the US charts.

Charles Barnet was a jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader from New York City. He died in 1991 at the age of 77 from complications of Alzheimer's & pneumonia.
He learned to play piano and saxophone as a kid & often left school to listen to music and to try to gain work as a musician. By sixteen he had played on tours with Jean Goldkette's satellite band and joined Frank Winegar's Pennsylvania Boys on tenor sax.
In 1947, he started to switch from swing to bebop. During his swing period, his band included Buddy DeFranco, Neal Hefti, Lena Horne, Barney Kessel, Dodo Marmorosa, Oscar Pettiford, Wes Dean, and Art House, while later versions of the band included Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Jimmy Knepper and Clark Terry.
Charlie was one of the first bandleaders to integrate his band, with more black musicians working for him than virtually all of the other popular white bandleaders. Trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Frankie Newton and bassist John Kirby joined in 1937. Lena Horne was one of his vocalists. Unusually, for a mainly white group, his orchestra was booked to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and established a new attendance record.
He was married to his final wife for 33 years despite the fact that he had 10 previous marriages.
This song was released as the “B” side in 1941 to a song called These Things You Left Me.

Prefab Sprout is an English pop band from Witton Gilbert, County Durham formed in 1978 by brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon and joined by vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player Wendy Smith in 1982.
Paddy McAloon has maintained that the name of the band was entirely made-up, stating in a 1984 interview; "I was asked about the name so many times I used to invent stories about it. The truth of the matter is that I made it up. Around that time all the groups were supposed to mean something ... and when you are 13 you think it's profound, that there must be some secrecy. I liked the idea and so thought of two odd words, put them together and have kept it, basically because it reminds me of how I used to look at things".
During their career they released 10 studio albums with the most recent one coming in 2013, 3 compilations. 4 box sets & 28 singles. Only 1 of their albums & 2 of their singles have charted here in the states.
This song comes from their 3rd album, it was titled From Langley Park to Memphis & was released in 1988. The album got relatively positive reviews & charted in many countries, but did not catch on here. There were also 6 singles released with the song linked to here being the 3rd of them, but they also avoided the US charts.
The group had studio help from Thomas Dolby who played keyboards & produced 4 of the tracks.
There is a guy named Pete Townshend playing acoustic guitar on this track.

At the age of 17, he moved to New York City and by 1926 was leading his own band in Harlem.
After his death, Ella Fitzgerald led the Chick Webb band until she left to focus on her solo career in 1942, causing the band to break up. Larry Elgart was a jazz bandleader from New London, Connecticut. He died in 2017 at the age of 95.
With his brother Les, he recorded "Bandstand Boogie", the theme to American Bandstand.
His biggest exposure came in 1982, with the success of a recording titled "Hooked on Swing". The instrumental was a medley of swing jazz hits - "In the Mood", "Cherokee", "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree", "American Patrol", "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Don't Be That Way", "Little Brown Jug", "Opus #1", "Take the A Train", "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" and "A String of Pearls" - that became so popular it even cracked the US Billboard Pop Singles chart (at No. 31) and Adult Contemporary chart (No. 20).
This compilation was a part of the same album that included Hooked On The Blues, Hooked On Astair, Hooked On A Star, Hooked on Big Bands, & the previously mentioned Hooked on Swing.
I reckon everyone will recognize these song snippets.

Ten Wheel Drive was an American rock band that existed from 1968 to 1974.
Genya Ravan was looking for a new band, as were two New Jersey musicians and songwriters, Michael Zager and Aram Schefrin. Those three were the original members, but over the history of the band they had a lot of different players. Even Daryle Hall & John Oates sang in the choir for a moment or two.
Their first big concert appearance was in 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York City. Apart from the band's intense musical presence, Genya caused some excitement when she took off her see-through jacket and continued the performance half-naked.
They released just 4 albums but none of them got any higher than 151 on the top 200. Their highest charting single stalled out at 74 in 1970.
This song comes from their 1st album released in 1969. It was called Construction #1 & was the album that charted the best for them. They never released a Construction #2.

Johnny Winter III was a singer, guitarist, songwriter and record producer from Beaumont, Texas. He was found dead in his hotel room two days after his last performance, at the Cahors Blues Festival in France in 2014, he was 70. An official cause of death was never released.
During his career he released 19 studio albums, 9 Live albums, 15 compilations & 25 singles.
Throughout his career, his catalogue was plagued by bootleg albums and unauthorized re-releases of singles from his early pre-Columbia Records days. These records competed with his official releases and some were doctored with later overdubs by other musicians. Royalties were not his primary concern: "I just don't want that bullshit out ... It's just bad music."
This song comes from his 6th studio album. It was called Saints & Sinners & it was released in 1974. The album charted at #42.
The song was written by Van Morrison. Other musicians playing on the song include Rick Derringer on Bass, & guitar, Bobby Caldwell on Drums & Percussion, Edgar Winter Keyboards & Jon Smith on Saxophone.

Buffalo Springfield was formed in Los Angeles in 1966 with Stephen Stills (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Dewey Martin (drums, vocals), Bruce Palmer (bass guitar), Richie Furay (guitar, vocals) and Neil Young (guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals).
The group's name was taken from a brand of steamroller made by the Buffalo-Springfield Roller Company.
The band was short lived & released just 3 albums all in the space of 19 months. They also released just 9 singles, but the song linked to here was their only top 40 hit landing at #7.
The legacy of the group in Rock roots is extensive. Stephen Stills went on to form Crosby, Stills & Nash with David Crosby of the Byrds and Graham Nash of the Hollies. Neil Young launched his solo career and later joined Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969. Richie Furay, along with Jim Messina, went on to form the country-rock band Poco.
Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
The song was written by Stephen Stills & was included on their 1st album.
Although it is often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in Los Angeles in November 1966, a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, the same year Buffalo Springfield had become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go. Local residents and businesses had become annoyed by how crowds of young people going to clubs and music venues along the Strip had caused late-night traffic congestion. In response, they lobbied Los Angeles County to pass local ordinances stopping loitering, and enforced a strict curfew on the Strip after 10 p.m. The young music fans, however, felt the new laws infringed upon their civil rights.
On Saturday, November 12, 1966, fliers were distributed on the Sunset Strip inviting people to join demonstrations later that day. Several of Los Angeles's rock radio stations also announced a rally outside the Pandora's Box club on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights. That evening, as many as 1,000 young demonstrators, including future celebrities such as Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda (who was handcuffed by police) gathered to protest against the curfew's enforcement. Although the rallies began peacefully, trouble eventually broke out. The unrest continued the next night, and periodically throughout the rest of November and December, forcing some clubs to shut down within weeks. It was against the background of these civil disturbances that Stills recorded "For What It's Worth" on December 5, 1966.

Sweet Substitute is an English all girl trio, specializing in jazz and swing harmony recordings. They began in Bristol in 1975.
There isn’t much information on this group, but they lasted only a few years & seem to have released 5 albums, 3 of which were compilations with other artists.
Original members were: Teri Penfold, Angie Masterton and Eiri Thrasher. As time went buy members changed & included included Sammi Brown, Suzi Knowler, Kate McNab and Tony Baldwin.

The Red Elvises were founded in LA in 1995 by Igor Yuzov, Oleg Bernov, Zhenya Rock.
Igor and Oleg met during a Russian-American peace walk and subsequently played together in a Russian folk-rock band called Limpopo. The band's third original member, guitarist Zhenya Rock (a.k.a. Kolykhanov), had also emigrated to America and was the lead guitarist of the band until 2004. For the first few months Andrey Baranov was the band's drummer, but within that year, the first American in the band, drummer Avi Sills from Austin, was added to the lineup. They first began as an LA street act at Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade.
They have so far released 14 albums with the most recent one coming in 2017 but they seem to still be around & are heading out on tour in the coming months. This song comes from their 7th album. It was called Shake Your Pelvis & was recorded in 1999 & released in 2000.

New Riders of the Purple Sage is a country rock band that emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969.
Their roots go back to the early 1960s Peninsula folk/beatnik scene centered on Stanford University's Perry Lane housing complex in Menlo Park, where future Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia often played gigs with guitarist David Nelson. John Dawson also played some concerts with Garcia, Nelson, and their compatriots while visiting relatives on summer vacation.
The band has gone through multiple iterations with many different members, but they are still around & in fact released their 31st album in 2022.
This song was included on their self titled debut album from 1971. At the time of this release the group included John Dawson – acoustic guitar, vocals, David Nelson – electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals, Dave Torbert – bass, acoustic guitar, vocals, Jerry Garcia – pedal steel guitar, banjo & Spencer Dryden – drums, percussion. It was their only studio album to feature co-founder Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, & he is heard on this song.
