Judy Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was the youngest child of Ethel Marion Gumm and Francis "Frank" Avent Gumm. Her parents were vaudevillians who settled in Grand Rapids to run a movie theater that featured vaudeville acts.
Judy first appeared at the age of two, when she joined her elder sisters Mary Jane "Suzy/Suzanne" Gumm and Dorothy Virginia "Jimmie" Gumm on the stage of her father's movie theater during a Christmas show and sang a chorus of "Jingle Bells".
The family relocated to Lancaster, California, in June 1926, her father bought and operated another theater in Lancaster, and Ethel began managing her daughters and working to get them into motion pictures.
Evidently that strategy worked pretty well.
This song was a part of the soundtrack to the movie, Thousands Cheer from 1943. This was the first color film of Kathryn Grayson (also her 1st starring role), Mary Astor, John Boles, Eleanor Powell, Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, Donna Reed, José Iturbi', Margaret O'Brien, Lena Horne, Bob Crosby, & Kay Kyser.
It was also the 1st movie to feature a dance choreographed and performed by Gene Kelly, the celebrated 'mop dance' to "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."

Less Than Jake is a ska punk band from Gainesville, Florida, formed in 1992.
Members have told various different versions of the origin of their name. Vocalist & guitar player Chris DeMakes has stated in interviews that the name came from drummer Vinnie Fiorello's family's pet parrot. His story claimed that the parrot would squawk during the band's practice sessions, leading to Fiorello's mother telling the band that they needed to stop playing because they were disturbing the bird. This would lead to the band referring to themselves as being "less than Jake". In June 2020, however, Fiorello clarified that Jake was not a parrot but was, in fact, an English Bulldog.
During their career they have released 9 studio albums, 4 Live albums & 17 singles. They have also been included on 23 different soundtrack albums.
This song comes from their Borders & Boundaries collection. It was their 4th studio album & was released in 2000. The album landed at 103 on the top 200. It included just 1 single, it was called Gainesville Rock City, but it did not chart. They toured in support of the album by opening on Bon Jovi’s North American Tour.

The song linked to here was the 1st single from the album, it landed at 9 on the Country chart & 51 on the hot 100. It was followed up by Hooked On Music #2 on Country, but it did not hit the hot 100 & Secrets #47 on Country & 76 on the hot 100.
I can’t seem to find any credits for the other players on the song, but the album was recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama so it may be The Swampers.

Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet was a jazz tenor saxophonist from Broussard, Louisiana. He died of a heart attack on July 22, 2004. He was 81 years old.
In 1939, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Nat King Cole. He sat in with Nats' trio on occasion. In 1940, Cole introduced Jacquet to Lionel Hampton who was putting together a big band. Hampton wanted to hire Jacquet, but asked the young Jacquet to switch from alto saxophone to tenor.
In 1942, at age 19, Jacquet soloed on the Hampton Orchestra's recording of "Flying Home", one of the first times a honking tenor sax was heard on record. It has been recognized as the first R&B saxophone solo.
He released a lot of solo material during his life, but he also played on albums with Count Basie, Kenny Burrell, Buddy Rich & The Modern Jazz Quartet.
This song has been included on multiple compilations of his music, but it was released as a single on a 78 rpm with a “B” side called Jacquet Bounce back in 1946.

This is another one of those obscure groups where info is hard to find. Gotta love the 80's hair though.
The Star Sisters were a female Dance/Pop trio from The Netherlands that were very popular during the 1980s.
Between 1983 and 1987 they released six singles in Europe, including their best known hits "Are You Ready For My Love" in 1986, "He's The 1 (I Love)" in 1985, and a cover of American singer Regina’s “Baby Love” in 1987.
The group consisted of Sylvana van Veen, Patricia Paay and Yvonne Keeley. Patricia and Yvonne are actually sisters.
This seems to have been released as a single in most European countries with a “B” side called Baby Love, which evidently was not a cover of The Supremes hit. Some countries had a “B”” side called You Make Me Feel Alive.

Even though he released his 1st EP back in 2012, his discography has been pretty limited. It took 6 years for him to get a full album out & he just released his 3rd in April. All 3 of his albums have been released on different labels, so he has had a tough time finding a permanent home.
This song comes from that 1st EP. It was called Because Of You. The EP was self- released & the song was released as a single, but it did not chart.

The Quireboys are an English rock band formed in 1984 in London.
They were originally known as The Queerboys, billed as The London Quireboys in the United States and Canada, settling at last with their current name. By 1987, the band's controversial name was starting to hinder them, it caused some of the gigs to be cancelled. They were also booked to play Reading Festival, on the understanding that they would change their name. Thus, they changed it to the Quireboys and have kept the name ever since.
The band has been on & off & back on again & seem to be on as of right now. They have had many different members over the years including drummer Jason Bonham who played with them briefly in the early 2000’s.
This is rock & roll, so we can expect some controversy. Evidently there are now two different groups touring at this point. One is called Quireboys, the other is The Quireboys. Each iteration contains at least one of the original members.
At this point they have released 13 studio albums with a 14th that was supposed to come out last year, but has yet to see the light of day.
This song comes from the 3rd of 4 different compilation albums. It was called Masters Of Rock & it came out in 2002.

They currently consist of Mike Ness (lead vocals, lead guitar), Jonny Wickersham (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Brent Harding (bass, backing vocals), David Hidalgo Jr. (drums), and David Kalish (keyboards).
It’s kind of surprising to note that all these years later, they have still released just 7 studio albums, & 24 singles. But there have been many 7 & 8 year hiatus’s between albums. This song was included on 'Sex, Love and Rock 'N' Roll', it was released in 2004 & was the 6th of the 7. It landed at #31 on the top 200. The song linked to here was the 1st of 3 singles, none of them charted.
At the time of this record the band included Mike Ness lead vocals, lead guitar, Jonny Wickersham rhythm guitar, backing vocals, John Maurer on bass & Charlie Quintana on drums. On the same day, the album release was announced, it was also announced that bass guitarist John Maurer, had left the band to "in order to stay home and devote time to his wife and two children"

Newsies is a 1992 historical musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega in his film directing debut.
The film was loosely based on the New York City Newsboys' Strike of 1899 and featuring twelve original songs by Alan Menken with lyrics by Jack Feldman and an underscore by J. A. C. Redford.
The film starred Christian Bale, Bill Pullman, Ann-Margret, and Robert Duvall.
It was an initial box office bomb, and received mixed reviews at the time of its release. However, it later gained a cult following on home video, and was ultimately adapted into a stage musical on Broadway. The play was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning two including Best Original Score for Menken and Feldman.
Alan Menken's longtime collaborator, Howard Ashman, was too sick from AIDS to work with Menken on this film, and he would eventually die on March 14, 1991. Menken brought in lyricist Jack Feldman to help.
Unlike the play which was nominated for & won Best awards, the film got more nominations for Worst this & Worst that, but it lost most of them.

Yesterday we heard from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, today we get a song from John McEuen who was a founding member of the group.
John was born in Oakland, Ca. & will be 78 in December.
This song comes from an album called The McEuen Sessions, For All The Good. It was released in 2012. The other two guys playing are Johnathan McEuen & Nathan McEuen, whom I suspect are his sons.
Sylmar is a suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley and is the northernmost neighborhood within the City of Los Angeles. The city can trace its past to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission.

David Crosby was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from LA. He died in January at the age of 81. He was the second son of Academy Award-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby.
He first found fame as a member of the Byrds, with whom he helped pioneer the genres of folk rock and psychedelia in the mid-1960s, and later as part of the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, who helped popularize the "California sound" of the 1970s.
His time with The Byrds was difficult to say the least. Friction between him and the other Byrds came to a head in early to mid-1967 after the Monterey International Pop Festival in June when his onstage political diatribes and support of various John F. Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories between songs outraged Roger McGuinn. He further annoyed his bandmates when, at the invitation of Stephen Stills, he sat in with Buffalo Springfield's set the following night, after Neil Young had quit the band. The internal conflict boiled over during the initial recording sessions for The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968) that summer, where differences over song selections led to intra-band arguments. In particular, David wanted the band to record only original & he was dismissed in October after he refused to record a cover of Goffin and King's "Goin' Back".
During his career he released 6 albums with The Byrds, 8 solo albums, & multiple albums in combination with other members of CSN&Y. He also played on albums from Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, Dave Mason, James Taylor, Elton John & on & on it goes.
This song comes from his 2nd solo album. It was called Oh Yes I Can & it came out in 1989. It was released 18 years after his debut solo offering. Almost all of the Wrecking Crew participated in the record. This particular song includes Leland Sklar on bass, Michael Landau on guitar, Russ Kunkel drums, & as a bonus Bonnie Raitt is providing backing vocals.

For the past few YEARS all the music I have been sharing has had to do with songs written about various places in this country. For the past few MONTHS it has boiled down to New York City & Los Angeles. There are enough songs left on the lists I have been using to keep it going for at least another year. But I have decided it is TIME to change focus.
Today I close out the travel songs with 2 songs that could, & probably do, have something to do with almost every place. Tomorrow, we move on to songs that have to do with all aspects of TIME.
Thanks for sticking with me so far, hope you have enjoyed the trip & that you stay around in the future.
This song comes from Bob Seger’s 1977 album, Night Moves. The song was released as a single in April 1977 & got to #24 here in the states & #1 in Canada. The song has been certified Gold in the US.
Bob said that the street he was singing about is Ann Street, just off Main Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he grew up. There was a pool hall there where they had girls dancing in the window and R&B bands playing on the weekends.
But every town we have visited during this journey has a Main Street.
The song was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama & the musicians playing are known as The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. They are Barry Beckett – keyboards, Pete Carr – lead guitar, acoustic guitar, Roger Hawkins – drums, percussion, David Hood – bass, & Jimmy Johnson – rhythm guitar.
