It seems like back in the 50’s if you were an actor or actress, someone, somewhere, would decide you could sing & gave you the opportunity to record some songs. Like this guy.
Sal Mineo was an actor from The Bronx.
He was best known for his role as John "Plato" Crawford in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), which earned him a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor at age 17, making him the fifth-youngest nominee in the category.
He also starred in Exodus (1960), for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and received a second Academy Award nomination.
The list of other movies he was in is long but it includes The Longest Day (1962), John Ford’s final western Cheyenne Autumn, and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) among others.
Sal died at the age of 37. On the night of February 12, 1976, he returned home from a rehearsal for the play P.S. Your Cat Is Dead. After parking his car in the carport below his West Hollywood apartment, he was stabbed in the heart by a mugger. He was found lying and bleeding in the parking alley by neighbors who had heard his cries for help, but he was only able to walk a few steps, after which he collapsed and died immediately.
Lionel Ray Williams, a young pizza delivery man with a long criminal record, was convicted and sentenced in March 1979 to 57 years in prison for the killing and also for committing ten robberies. Although considerable confusion existed as to what witnesses had seen in the dark the night Mineo was murdered, Williams claimed to have had no idea who Mineo was.
Corrections officers later said they had overheard Williams admitting to the stabbing. Williams' wife later confirmed that on the night Mineo died, he had come home with blood on his shirt. After several years of speculation about the motives for the murder, the police investigation concluded that it was a random robbery. Williams was paroled in 1990 after serving 12 years.
Sal had 2 top 40 hits in 1957. This song was also released in 1957 but it missed out on the top 40 by landing at #45.

Aimee Mann is a singer-songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. She turned 63 this past September.
She released her first solo album, Whatever, in 1993, followed by I'm With Stupid in 1995. Both earned positive reviews but had low sales, and placed her in conflict with her record company, Geffen.
She achieved wider recognition for her contributions to the soundtrack for the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia (1999), earning nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal. After Geffen refused to release her third album, Bachelor No. 2, Aimee self-released it under her own label, SuperEgo Records, in 2000. It received strong sales and critical acclaim, establishing her as a career artist who could work outside the major label system.
She won her 2nd Grammy in 2008 for Best Folk Album for her album Mental Illness.
Over the course of her career, she has released more than a dozen albums as a solo artist and with other musicians. This song comes from her 1st solo release. The album is listed as one of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It landed at 127 on the top 200 albums chart.

All these years later & this is still one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded.
The song comes from their Can't Buy a Thrill album, it was their debut album & was released in November 1972.
This is the only Steely Dan album to include David Palmer as a lead vocalist, Donald Fagen took over those duties from Countdown To Ecstasy onward. The album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Albums chart, and was certified Platinum 21 years later in 1993.
The debut single was Do It Again & that one went to #6. The song linked to here was the 2nd & final single from the album & it got to #11.
The guitar solo by session player Elliott Randall, was recorded in one take. It has reportedly been rated by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page as his favorite solo of all time, and he scored it 12/10. In 2016 the solo was ranked the 40th best guitar solo of all time by the readers of Guitar World magazine.

The album included two singles that were top-twenty hits "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" and "I Want You". Two additional songs—"Just Like a Woman" and "Visions of Johanna"—have been named as among his greatest compositions and were featured in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

When the Beatles released their sixth studio album, Rubber Soul, in December 1965, John Lennon's song "Norwegian Wood" attracted attention for the way Lennon disguised his account of an illicit affair in cryptic, Dylanesque language. Dylan wrote this as a response to that song, copying the tune and circular structure, but taking Lennon's tale in a darker direction. It has been described as sounding "like Bob Dylan impersonating John Lennon impersonating Bob Dylan".
Musicians playing on the song include, Bob Dylan – vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, Wayne Moss – acoustic guitar, Charlie McCoy – acoustic guitar, Joe South – electric bass, Al Kooper – organ, & Kenneth Buttrey – drums.

Charlie Musselwhite is a blues harmonica player and bandleader, from Kosciusko, Mississippi. He will turn 80 in January.
Charlie first came to prominence, along with Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, and Elvin Bishop, as a pivotal figure in helping to revive the Chicago Blues movement of the 1960s.
In time, he led his own blues band, and after Elektra Records' success with Paul Butterfield, he released the album Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band in 1966 on Vanguard Records to immediate success. Which is where the song linked to here comes in.
This album was one of the first blues albums targeted also to fans of rock and roll, it was influential in bridging the gap between blues and rock. The album's success allowed him to launch a career as a full-time musician, relocating from Chicago to California, and also secured his reputation as a harmonica player. Over the years he has collaborated with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Tom Waits, Ben Harper, Cyndi Lauper and INXS.

Blue Rodeo is a Canadian country rock band formed in 1984 in Toronto.
High school friends Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor began playing music professionally together after completing college. The two moved to New York City in the early 1980s to further their music careers. There they met keyboardist and fellow Canadian Bob Wiseman, who was at that time working as a producer. Upon returning to Toronto in the summer of 1984, the trio decided to form a band. The name "Blue Rodeo" had already been chosen for the new group when they met former David Wilcox drummer Cleave Anderson and asked him to join. Anderson in turn recommended his former bandmate in The Sharks, bassist Bazil Donovan, and the new band's lineup was essentially set.
But just like many other bands, these guys have had many different members over the years. They are still active with Cuddy & Keelor involved with a whole new lineup. They are currently touring Canada, for those friends across the border.
They have released 16 studio albums, 4 live albums, & 1 greatest hits album. Band members have also collaborated on projects with other notable Canadian artists, including Sarah McLachlan, The Tragically Hip, Burton Cummings, Great Big Sea, Jann Arden, The Sadies, Skydiggers, Cuff the Duke, Crash Vegas, Cowboy Junkies, Sarah Harmer, Jill Barber, and Kathleen Edwards.
They have won many Canadian music awards, including 12 Juno Awards and 7 SOCAN awards.
This song comes from their 1993 album, "Five Days In July". It was their 5th studio & was released in 1993. The album & the song both charted in Canada, but did not land here in the US.
Singer/guitarist Jim Cuddy has said that "5 Days in May" was inspired by his sound engineer's practice of writing his wife's name in the sand whenever he finds himself on a beach. Cuddy noticed the engineer doing so while the band was on tour in New Zealand, and was inspired to write lyrics combining this story with the story of how Cuddy met his own wife.
This is some nice stuff, too bad that don’t seem to get any recognition here.

Glen Gray, was a jazz saxophonist and leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra from Roanoke, Illinois. He died of lymphoma in 1963 at the age of 63. His full name was Glenn Gray Knoblauch.
He served as leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra although the orchestra itself had been formed as a collective group, with no designated leader. Their mid-1930s appearances on the long-run radio comedy-variety program, the Camel Caravan, (introduced with their theme, "Smoke Rings") increased their popularity. Glen chose not to conduct the band in the early years, playing in the saxophone section while violinist Mel Jenssen acted as conductor. In 1937, the band overwhelmingly voted in favor of Glen leading the orchestra, and he finally accepted the job. Eventually he ended up owning the orchestra & the name.
This song was released as a single in 1937 with a B side called Drifting Apart.

Betty Davis was a singer, songwriter, and model from Durham, North Carolina. She died from cancer in 2022 at the age of 77. Her real name was Betty Gray Mabry.
She was known for her controversial sexually oriented lyrics and performance style and was the second wife of trumpeter Miles Davis. Her AllMusic profile describes her as "a wildly flamboyant funk diva with few equals ... [who] combined the gritty emotional realism of Tina Turner, the futurist fashion sense of David Bowie, and the trendsetting flair of Miles Davis".
She was a model in 1966 when she met Miles Davis, who was 19 years her senior. He was separated from his first wife, dancer Frances Davis, and was dating actress Cicely Tyson. Betty & Miles began dating in early 1968, and they were married that September. During their year of marriage, she introduced him to the fashions and popular music trends of the era that influenced his music. In his autobiography, Miles credited Betty with helping to plant the seeds of his further musical explorations by introducing him to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone.
During her long career she released just 4 studio albums. The most recent one was recorded in 1976 but not released until 2009. The song linked to hear comes from her 2nd album. It was called They Say I'm Different & was released in 1974. The album got stellar reviews, but it looks to have charted only in Germany & there were no charting singles.

With this song we reach the milestone of the 100th song on this journey through Time, so we might as well take a detour through the psychedelic mind of Vanilla Fudge to celebrate.
Vanilla Fudge is a rock band from Long Island.
They are known predominantly for their slow extended heavy rock arrangements of contemporary hit songs, such as their hit cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On". And that also proves to be the case with the song linked to below.
The band's original line–up—vocalist and organist Mark Stein, bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert, lead guitarist/vocalist Vince Martell, and drummer and vocalist Carmine Appice—recorded five albums during the years 1967–69, before disbanding in 1970. They regrouped & have toured as recently as 2022 with three of the four original members: Stein, Martell, and Appice, with Pete Bremy on bass. Tim Bogert retired in 2009 and died in 2021.
The band was originally called The Pigeons and in his 2016 autobiography, Stick It!, Carmine explained the name change to 'Vanilla Fudge': In April 1967 the Pigeons got signed to Atlantic Records. But there was one drawback, however: Atlantic didn't want to sign a band called The Pigeons. Ahmet Ertegun, the label's founder and president, didn't like that name and told us we had to change it. We didn't mind, in fact, I had always thought The Pigeons was a weird thing to be called but had just gone with it. We tried to think up a new name but were getting nowhere until we played a gig at the Page 2 club on Long Island and ended up talking to a chick named Dee Dee who worked there. She told us how her grandfather used to call her Vanilla Fudge. Then she looked at us and added "Maybe you guys should call yourselves that—you're like white soul music". We liked it. We told our manager, Phil Basile. He liked it. We told Atlantic and they liked it, too. So Vanilla Fudge it was.
They released their most recent album in 2022. This song comes from their 4th album. It was called Near The Beginning & was released in 1969. The album peaked at #16.
This song was written by Lee Hazelwood who had a #26 hit single with it in 1968 as a duet with Nancy Sinatra. Vanilla Fudge turns the song on its head.

Normally with all the songs I have collected around this theme of time, we wouldn’t see 2 songs from the same artist appear so closely together, but luck & the alphabet had other plans.
The song a few days back from Jo Jo Gunne was from their 2nd album. This time we go back to their debut, self titled album from 1972. The album landed at #57, making it their highest charting effort. Each subsequent release charted worse as they went along until finally, they got back together in 2005 & produced their newest album, it didn’t chart at all. This was also the only album to chart in Australia & Canada.
The album included their only Top 40 hit single. Run, Run, Run landed at #27. It was also the only album to feature the original lineup of musicians that started the band. Jay Ferguson – lead vocals, keyboards, Matthew "Matt" Andes – guitars, backing vocals, Mark Andes – bass, backing vocals, William "Curly" Smith – drums, backing vocals, percussion, harmonica.
Jay Fergusoin & Matt Andes co – wrote a couple of the songs, but Jay wrote this one himself.

This song was included on the 1989 reissue of his 2nd album. The album was called Past Masters & was originally released in 1967, but the song didn’t make the original cut. The album included the 1st version of The First Cut Is The Deepest. It did not chart & was considered a disappointment considering his 1st release got to #7 in the UK & 173 in the US.
The song was released as a single & got to #20 in the UK, but he won’t have a charting hit in the US until he hits #21 with Wild World off of the Tea For The Tillerman album in 1971.

I find almost no information on this guy, but what I did find comes from his own website where I got the biographical info. But even there I can’t determine the album this song comes from or if it is even on an album. I 1st heard the song on a podcast dedicated to Smooth Jazz.
Emmanuel Waldron is a London born award-winning pianist who has played for HM Charles III (who personally commended Emmanuel) & the Queen Consort, HM The Queen & HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh, the London Mayor, the Queen Of Jordan, the Pope and other global dignitaries.
During his career he has worked with and/or shared the stage with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Karen Gibson & The Kingdom Choir, Annie Lennox, London Community Gospel Choir, Ruby Turner, David & Carrie Grant, Ronan Keating, Courtney Pine, Pixie Lott, Alfie Boe, Beverley Knight, Jools Holland, Steve Brookstein (world’s 1st X-Factor winner), The Philharmonia Orchestra, soul singer Kenny Thomas and many other music artists.
Evidently the song was just released in July of this year.

What a pretty early morning arrangement this is.

Roberta Flack is a retired singer, pianist from Black Mountain, North Carolina. She is still with us & will be 87 next February.
Jazz pianist & vocalist Les McCann discovered her singing and playing jazz in a D.C. nightclub. He later said on the liner notes of what would be her first album "Her voice touched, tapped, trapped, and kicked every emotion I've ever known. I laughed, cried, and screamed for more... she alone had the voice."
She was the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in two consecutive years: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won in 1973 and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" won in 1974. She was also presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
She has released 20 albums during her career with the most recent one coming in 2018. This song comes from her debut album titled First Take. It was released in 1969. It hit #1 on both the Top 200 & the R&B albums chart. The album has been certified Platinum.
Even though the song was on her 1969 album, it didn’t get released as a single until 3 years later & it became her breakout hit. It was her 1st #1 hit single & has been certified Gold.
The song was written in 1957 as a folk song by British political singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife.
The song was used by Clint Eastwood in his 1971 directorial debut Play Misty for Me to score a love scene featuring Eastwood and actress Donna Mills. Roberta would recall how Eastwood, who had heard her version of "The First Time..." on his car radio while driving down the LA Freeway, phoned out of the blue to her Alexandria (Virginia) home: (Roberta Flack quote:)"[Eastwood said:] 'I'd like to use your song in this movie...about a disc jockey [with] a lot of music in it. I'd use it in the only part of the movie where there's absolute love.' I said okay. We discussed the money. [Eastwood would pay $2000 to use Flack's "The First Time..."] He said: 'Anything else?' And I said: 'I want to do it over again. It's too slow.' He said: "No, it's not.'"
