Norman Seldin is a musician, piano player, vocalist & manager from Fair Haven, New Jersey. His parents got him started on the piano at age 3. There were days of four-hour rehearsals by age 12. Little did they know at the time that their actions would lead to a 50-year career in all phases of the music business. As a teenager he noticed that young people in the 1960s were gravitating to the soul and rhythm and blues music of artists like Little Richard and Fats Domino. At the jewelry store his parents owned, he and store employee Horner Williams became friends, and once Williams introduced him to this music, Seldin was hooked. He remembers “sneaking R&B LPs into the house and playing them when mom and dad weren’t home.” At age 13 he became the youngest member of the American Federation of Musicians and performed with his first band, The Naturals, at his 8th grade graduation dance. As a band leader he was also at the front end of what would become a pretty famous career for one pretty good sax player: One night at John Barleycorn’s in Ocean Township in 1970 would have a profound impact on the shore music scene. It seemed that a certain young man was having car trouble and walked into the club to use the phone. After the call, he approached the band. “Do you want to sit in?” Seldin asked, and Clarence Clemons said, “Sure.” Clarence, of course went on to become a part of Bruce Springsteen’s band. But, his days with Norman weren’t quite over. This song comes from an album called Asbury Park Then And Now, It was released in 2008. Evidently there are a few members of The E Street Band lending musical assistance on the album. If you like the zydeco style & have an ear for Little Feat, I suspect you will like this as well. Do a google search for Mike Sinatra & it brings up a lot of links about a jazz singer with the same name. That guy is the grandson of Frank & the son of Frank Jr.. This guy is not that guy. This is most definitely not jazz, but it is pretty good anyway. This song comes from an album called Mike Sintra II. It was released in 1999. The album can be had over on Ebay, for the low, low price of $79.99. Sometimes you just run into a wall when trying to find info. I can say, if I met him on the street, the last thing I would think is that he was a singer/ musician. Jersey Bound by Mike Sinatra www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mcrd-0Lde4

Bill and Bonnie Hearne, who are both sight impaired (she has been completely blind most of her life while he has limited vision), met at the University of Texas in the late '60s. They were already regulars in the Austin clubs in the early '70s when the town became ground zero for the outlaw country explosion. The couple moved to northern New Mexico in the late '70s. From that period until the early '90s, they released six albums. During their early years on the Austin music landscape, an underage, then unknown Nanci Griffith used to sneak into bars to hear them. Lyle Lovett, once opened a show for them. This song comes from their 1st album called Diamonds In The Rough it was released in 2000.The record came about when Bill and Bonnie fan Barney Crutchfield offered to finance a first-class studio production of their music. The first step was hiring producer Jim Rooney, who brought together some of the finest session musicians in Austin and Nashville to provide backing instrumentation, along with old friends Jerry Jeff Walker, Lyle Lovett, Tish Hinojosa, and Nanci Griffith (who dedicated her classic "Other Voices, Other Rooms" in part to "Bill and Bonnie Hearne, who play the best darn folk music I ever heard"). They even got Kris Kristoffersen to do the album photography. I have often heard it said, that when you lose one of your senses, the others step up their game. These folks lost their sight, but their vocal harmonies have definitely not suffered. Beautiful stuff! www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AKwMh8tGng

Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, occasional actress, and model from Atlanta. Her real name is Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall. Cat Power was originally the name of her first band, but has become her stage name as a solo artist. During her career she has released 11 studio albums, four EPs, eleven commercial singles, twelve promotional singles, two singles as a featured artist, and numerous music videos. This song comes from her Jukebox album, it was her 8th studio album & was released in 2008. The album got to #12 but seems to have produced no hit singles. The album was almost exclusively cover songs. It was actually her 2nd album of covers. She in fact, just released her 3rd album of cover songs in January of this year. It was her 11th studio album & it was called Covers…. The song itself is the theme song from the Martin Scorsese film New York, New York, composed by John Kander, with lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was written for and performed in the film by Liza Minnelli. In 2004 it finished #31 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American Cinema. Liza’s version did not chart. Frank Sinatra got the song to #32 when he released it. New York by Cat Power www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcybnuVH9kM

Andrew Kirk was a jazz saxophonist and tubist who led the Twelve Clouds of Joy band during the swing era. He was born in Newport, Kentucky but grew up in Denver. In 1938, his band held the top spot of the Billboard chart for 12 weeks with "I Won't Tell a Soul (I Love You)". He also holds a place in musical charts history, in 1942, their single "Take It and Git” became the first single to hit number one on the Harlem Hit Parade, Andrew died of Alzheimer's disease in 1992 in New York at the age of 94. When it comes to songs written about New York City, everything seems to have been a subject at one time or another. There are almost 200 songs with a number in the title & those are listed before we even get to “A” in the alphabet. Nothing seems to have been over looked. 47th Street is an east–west running street between First Avenue and the West Side Highway in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Andy Warhol's studio The Factory was on 47th street. The portion of 47th Street between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue is known as the Diamond District. Broadway theatre is well represented on West 47th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, including the Brooks Atkinson Theatre (at 256 West 47th Street), the Ethel Barrymore Theatre at (243 West 47th Street) and the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, formerly the Biltmore Theater (at 261 West 47th Street). 47th Street Jive by Andy Kirk www.youtube.com/watch?v=nabEHQ5phqc

Today seems to be a day of discovering good, new, artists for me. Mipso is a band that formed in Chapel Hill N.C., while the members were still students at UNC-Chapel Hill. They are known for combining a traditional string band format with close harmony and a variety of modern influences. Over the years the group has claimed various origins of the word "Mipso." In 2013 guitarist Joseph Terrell stated that the members "just came up with it." In 2013 bassist Wood Robinson claimed that the name referred to a now defunct Japanese appliance manufacturer, crediting Jacob Sharp's thesis research into post-war Japan with unearthing a reference to the company. Sharp confirmed this version of the story in an interview with Bluegrass Today. In a September 2015 interview with Raleigh's News & Observer, however, Terrell revealed a new origin story, claiming to want to dispel previous rumors. "There's a phrase in Japan," he explains, "it means something familiar, but there's something a little bit off. And it roughly translates, or at least we were told, to 'a little pee in the miso.' And so, we put a little P in the miso: Mipso." This story has subsequently been published and re-confirmed in various publications. This song comes from their debut album called Dark Holler Pop. It was released in 2013. The album landed on Billboard's Bluegrass chart and raised the band's profile considerably. All of their albums have so far landed in the top 10 on the Bluegrass charts. If you like nice harmonies, I’d say this is for you. Carolina Calling by Mipso www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ENNxUDMqkM

Cactus is a hard rock band formed on Long Island NY in 1969. They were initially conceived by former Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, after plans to team up with guitarist Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had an automobile accident and was out of the music scene for over a year. They would eventually get together as Beck, Bogert & Appice in 1972 & release 1 studio album & 1 Live set. Cactus has gone through many iterations with members joining, leaving, being fired, & quitting before being fired. But evidently as we can see, they were releasing new music as late as just last year. On January 13, 2021, Tim Bogert died at the age of 76, after a long battle with cancer. All the others seem to be still with us. During their career they have released 7 studio albums with the most recent one happening in 2021. This song comes from a compilation album called Barely Contained - The Studio Sessions, It wasn’t released until 2004. I don’t see any evidence that the song was ever on a prior album but it appears as though it was recorded in 1971. At that point in their career, Bogert & Appice were joined by Jim McCarty on guitar & Rusty Day on vocals & harmonica. Mean Night in Cleveland by Cactus www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8NrsbIES40

Over the Rhine is a Ohio-based folk music band, the core of which is the husband-and-wife team of pianist/guitarist/bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Bergquist. The band's namesake and place of origin is the Cincinnati neighborhood Over-the-Rhine. The band was originally a 4 piece but are now primarily Bergquist) and Detweiler accompanied by complementary musicians on albums and tours. Sort of like Steely Dan did for years. Over their career they have released numerous albums, with many of them being re released over the years. This was the title song of their 7th studio album. The Jayhawks are an alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene in the mid-1980s. Like so many of these groups that have been around for a while they have gone through numerous members & even though they are still releasing new material & still touring it appears as though Gary Louris: guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals, is the only original member remaining. During the history of the band they have released 11 albums & 12 singles. They have also collaborated with Ray Davies, formerly of The Kinks, for an album released in April, 2017 titled Americana, based on Davies' experiences in the USA. 2018 saw them backing Ray again on his album Our Country - Americana Act II This song comes from their Rainy Day Music album released in 2003. It was their 7th studio album. Guests on the album included Bernie Leadon, Jakob Dylan and Matthew Sweet. The album was their 2nd biggest charting release getting to #51 on the Billboard Chart. Jimmy Wakely was an actor, songwriter, country music vocalist, and one of the last of the singing cowboys. He was born in Howard County, Arkansas, but his family moved to Rosedale, Oklahoma by 1920. During the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, he released records, appeared in several B-Western movies with most of the major studios, appeared on radio and television and even had his own series of comic books. His duet singles with Margaret Whiting from 1949 until 1951, produced a string of top seven hits, including 1949's number one hit on the US country chart and pop music chart, "Slippin' Around". Jimmy owned two music publishing companies in later years, and performed at the Grand Ole Opry until shortly before his death. After contracting emphysema, he died of heart failure at Mission Hills, California on September 23, 1982, he was 68. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971, and the Western Music Association Hall of Fame in 1991. The tune was recorded in Hollywood in 1947, but it was also the title song to the 1948 movie in which he co starred with Dub Taylor & Virginia Belmont. Laura Gibson is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She was born in the coastal logging town of Coquille, Oregon, but she now lives in New York City. Some folks seem to be multi taskers from an early age. She was classically trained on cello in her youth. She attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon where she completed pre-medicine requirements and competed for the Women's basketball and Track and Field teams. On March 26, 2015 her Manhattan apartment was destroyed in the 2015 East Village gas explosion which killed two people. She was home at the time of the explosion but escaped unharmed. A recovery fund, established by friends and fans, raised several thousand dollars. This song comes from her 4th album. It was called Empire Builder & was released in 2016. She said that the title track was written when traveling from Oregon on the Empire Builder in order to start an MFA program in creative fiction at Hunter College New York. The Replacements were a rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1979. The group disbanded in 1991, with the members pursuing various projects. A reunion was announced in 2012, but it led to another separation & the final end in 2015. The Goo Goo Dolls' vocalist and guitarist Johnny Rzeznik cites group leader, guitarist & vocalist,Paul Westerberg as an "obvious influence" on his music. The Goo Goo Dolls toured in support for The Replacements' final tour. In October 2013, the band was announced as one of the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees, but they were not inducted. During their career they released 7 studio albums, 2 live albums, 6 compilation albums, 4 extended plays, 16 singles, and 10 music videos. This song comes from a two-disc compilation album titled All For Nothing/Nothing For All. It was released in 1997. Daryl Hall and John Oates are a pop rock duo formed in Philadelphia in 1970. According to the both of them, they always wanted to be referred to as Daryl Hall & John Oates, the shortening to Hall & Oates didn’t sit well. In 2003, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They remain the most successful duo of all time, ahead of the Carpenters, the Everly Brothers, and Simon & Garfunkel. In April 2014, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2016, they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a duo, they have released 18 studio albums, 11 Live albums, 27 compilation albums & 63 singles. This song comes from their 1st studio album. It was called Whole Oats & was released in 1972. The album did not chart nor did the only single called Goodnight & Goodmorning. They will begin to make some waves when they release their 2nd album called Abandoned Luncheonette. It got to #33. That album also included She’s Gone, but they were not able to get the song any higher than #60. They would re release it in 1976 as a follow up to their 1st hit, Sara Smile & this time it took off. They were finally off & running even though it took 4 years before they charted their 1st single. Fall in Philadelphia by Hall & Oates www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa4e3DIP0TE

In 2003, his debut album, produced by Phil Ramone, reached No. 1 on the Billboard jazz chart, making him the youngest musician to do so. This led to performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, L'Olympia, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Montreux Jazz Festival where he won an award in the piano competition. His style blends pop, rock, blues, and jazz. This song comes from his East of Angel Town album. It was his third studio album & was released in 2007. The album went to #5 on the Jazz Charts. He toured around the world, promoting the album with his single "Goodbye Philadelphia" and later joined Seal on tour in the U.S.in 2008. Kenny Tudrick is multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer, and engineer based in Detroit, Michigan. I reckon it is right to claim being a multi instrumentalist when you play drums for The Detroit Cobras and lead guitar for Kid Rock. He also played drums on Samantha Fish's Chills & Fever and joined her touring band, as well as recording and producing Todd Albright's Detroit Twelve String Blues & Rags album. Evidently his association with those bands gave him the opportunity to record some stuff on his own as can be seen by this song from his album called Bulldog. It was released in 2006. Today marks the final trip into the music about South Dakota & we leave the state with a guy that I can find almost no info on. Joe West, who is he, where does he come from? There are tons of links to the Joe West that was an umpire for major league baseball for many years. When he wasn’t umping he was also a Country singer even appearing at the Grand Ol Opry. This Joe West is certainly someone different. This guy also sings & plays guitar, but he is not a “big boned” umpiring kind of guy. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine. All I can say is that this song seems to have been released in 2004. Any Waren Zevon fans out there? I hear a resemblance between the two. I like it! Today we spend the entire day in Memphis with two completely different styles of music. Darryl Worley is a country music singer and songwriter from Memphis. He seems to have run into a bit more label trouble than most artists do. He signed with DreamWorks Records Nashville in 1999, & released 4 albums for the label, but DreamWorks shut down in 2005. He then moved to 903 Music, an independent label owned by Neal McCoy, releasing Here and Now in 2006, shortly before that label's closure. His most recent studio release is 2009's Sounds Like Life,on Stroudavarious Records, owned by James Stroud. He debuted the single "Keep the Change" in mid-2010. It was to be included on his 6th studio album, God & Country, but the album went unreleased when his record label, Stroudavarious, ceased operation. He then moved to Tenacity Records in 2012 to release a single called "You Still Got It". It was his last single & his last top 40 Country hit. Evidently Tenacity Records, is so far, still in business. But if Darryl’s luck continues, they won’t be for long. During his career he has released 5 albums & had 18 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including three number ones: "I Miss My Friend", "Have You Forgotten?", and "Awful, Beautiful Life", This song comes from that 2009 album called Sounds Like Life. I have to believe that even though they were a pretty obscure group of guys, everyone has at least heard of The Beatles, so I’ll leave it to you to find out more about them. Maybe they got pretty popular? This song was written by Chuck Berry but he never had a hit with it. The song was a #5 hit for Lonnie Mack in 1963 & Johnny Rivers did even better by taking it to #2 in 1964. This version was a part of The Beatles Live at the BBC. The album was released in 1994 & is a compilation album featuring performances by the Beatles that were originally broadcast on various BBC Light Program radio shows from 1963 to 1965. When the album came out in 1994 it landed in the top 10 in multiple countries around the world & peaked at number 3 in the US. It sold an estimated 8 million copies worldwide during its first year of release, including 2 million here in the states. They re issued in in 2013 & it once again hit the top 50 in all those countries again & it got to #34 here. Those guys were still selling all these years later. The Highwaymen were a country music supergroup, composed of four of country music's biggest artists who pioneered the outlaw country subgenre: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Between 1985 and 1995, the group recorded three albums as The Highwaymen. In 1990, they released their 2nd album. It was called Highwayman 2. It reached #4 on the country album chart. "Silver Stallion" was the first single and made the country Top 40. The album spent 40 weeks on the Country Albums Chart. They were nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. Six of the songs were written or co-written by members of the group. Willie wrote this one & takes the lead vocal part. Texas by Highwaymen www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yezr_A6R5-0

This morning we heard a song by a group of male country music legends. Now we hear from the better half of the population. The Highwomen is a country music group composed of Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires that was formed in 2019. The group's self-titled debut album was released on September 6, 2019. The Highwomen project was widely hinted at by Carlile, Morris and Shires before it was officially announced on April 6, 2019. With the name paying homage to the legendary Highwaymen country supergroup, the Highwomen were originally intended to leave the fourth spot in their line-up vacant to allow other female collaborators to join them, with Chely Wright, Courtney Marie Andrews, Margo Price, Janelle Monae and Sheryl Crow mentioned as potential guests. This song was the title song of their only album so far. The album got to #1 on the Country albums chart & #10 on the overall albums chart. The song was written by Brandi Carlisle & she takes lead vocals, but man those harmonies. Ya gotta love it! Wheels of Laredo by The Highwomen www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXatshHCjW4

Sophie B. Hawkins is a singer-songwriter, musician and painter. Born in New York City, she attended the Manhattan School of Music for a year as a percussionist before leaving to pursue a music career. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1993, but lost out to Arrested Development. During her career she has released 5 studio albums, 3 compilation albums & 17 singles. This song comes from her debut album called Tongues & Tails, released in 1992. The album landed at #51 on the charts, & has been certified as a Gold Record. It included the hit single Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover, which got all the way to #5 & is her biggest hit single. This song was her 2nd single from the album but it failed to chart. The song's bridge was influenced by John Steinbeck's 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath and features Sophie reciting the Lord's Prayer. In 2004, she noted that "aspects of the chorus were influenced by Bugs Bunny going through the golden gates and finding 50 foot carrots". She added, "I had never been to California when I wrote the song. California Here I Come by Sophie B. Hawkins www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0lUeR4VdOI

Michelle Malone is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer, born and raised in Atlanta. She began performing at age four in a church choir, and later learned to play saxophone, guitar, and drums, which she played in her first band at age twelve. Sometimes I get a kick out of reading waht the critics have to say. Here is what one said about Michelle: Compared to most musical artists in the Americana genre, Michelle Malone seems like a pair of distressed blue jeans amidst a sea of pantsuits. Unlike the surplus of self-professed rootsy rebels, one listen to this woman from Georgia and you know you’re hearing the real thing. She's a wild-haired Rock Goddess, political singer/songwriter, passionate raw performer with early roots in the church choir – no single characterization tells the whole story. Over the course of her career, she’s performed with artists from Gregg Allman to Ellen Degeneres, John Mayer to the Atlanta Symphony, Indigo Girls to Luther Dickinson, released more than a dozen records and went indie when it still took guts. Equal parts badass guitar slinger and sweet songstress, Michelle Malone artfully balances her penchant for ripping it through the roof with masterful lyrical introspection and vocals that range from sublime to raucous. Not that any of that is wrong, but it is rather flowery! During her career she has released 15 studio albums. This song was on her album called Debris, it came out in 2009.
