I don't have a problem with contestants getting an animal as a reward which they can choose to keep alive as a pet or for eggs or eat for its meat. This show is about survival. If anything, I have more respect for people eating meat as a result of earning it and then preparing it themselves rather than giving them a package of chicken parts to cook. Have people really forgotten where their food actually comes from?
Maybe I feel that way because I have killed and eaten fish I've caught myself.
The only animal hunting I have a problem with is trophy hunting. Killing an animal just so it's head can be mounted on someone's wall seems wasteful and disrespectful to me. But for people to kill an animal as a source of protein when they have little else is totally different.

I do know where my food comes from, lol, and it isn't a land walking mammal I don't want to make this a debate all about the chickens and what is wrong/right.. but the fact that producers are giving them animals in a cage that "can be killed" or kept as pets for eggs, let go, whatever is part of the issue. When that butt-fedora of a human, Michael Skupin hunted and killed the wild boar on season 2 it was a hot topic and drew outrage. How is giving them caged animals to kill any better? If they were really shipwrecked and needed to hunt local wild animals to survive, ok you do what you have to do.. but in the case of the show they are not going to let them starve and die if they don't get a chicken in 39 days. If it was TRULY about the survival factor they would never even give them rice and they would be left to hunt, forage, fish, etc. But they are not in that dire of a circumstance and thus giving a live animal reward is simply for the hope of "good TV drama" over the to kill or not to kill debate.. it happens every season they give the chickens. I so very rarely voice my passionate displeasure of something like this, nor do I preach about meat being bad or wish anyone who is a meat eater to rot in the seventh circle of hell, but I do feel strongly in this case.

FireWoman, I think what you are describing is exactly why they do this. During a standard meal reward, everyone just sits down to binge, and maybe the ones still conscious are looking for a hidden clue. Not much more to it. But there are many potential decisions if it is hens and a rooster. Probst has always said he likes situations where multiple things or discussions could evolve and the outcome isn't known. (Like some asshole on the tribe decides to hide the flint.) Besides, wasn't the Yeoman/Mark season the cutest ever?
I don't get the problem with providing food that has to be killed. Only one person needs to step up, and if no one does, well, there are always potential eggs or other fun and games with live poultry. I prefer not killing my own food, but I know where it comes from and I'm willing to pay a premium for only humanely raised animal products.
A daily egg delivery to those who were on the tribe at the time of the challenge, regardless of where they ended up, could be interesting!

Chickens are hardly new on Survivor. You don't want any, more for others. Letting them out, that isn't cruel? Sheesh..

The thing i enjoyed most about this episode was Aubry finding an idol in Survivor for the first time, I got a little emotional when they showed clips of her searching for idols in her past seasons. I think I'm rooting for her this season because to this day I still feel she deserved the win over Michele in Koah Rong.
As far as the chicken thing goes, I'm not a vegetarian and I do enjoy eating chicken in fact Fried chicken is like my favorite thing to eat, while I'm not saying I would ever get joy over killing an animal if Im put into that environment with lack of food I'm going to go into Survival mode and do whatever it takes to survive. Wendy being a vegetarian is wonderful but to release the chickens knowing this will make others angry just isnt a smart thing to do on a game level you have to consider other peoples feelings.
My biggest complaint about this season is the editing. Its terrible, I have yet to see Julia get a single confessional and this was the third episode. David vs Goliath was amazing and I felt like we got to connect with each character. This season thus far just has not done that for me. Chris leaving - I wasn't sad about it but I was just shocked, Like i thought he would have at least made merge. Maybe things will get interesting with the upcoming tribe swap. I normally am so pumped up after each episode and cant wait for the following week but I have yet to feel that way this season at all.

How is killing the chickens any different from giving them fishing gear and letting them catch, kill, and eat fish? No one ever says anything about the fish.
I wouldn't personally want to be the one to kill a chicken, but I would eat it if someone else killed it. There's always someone who will do it.

I found that emotional as well. We only see a few minutes, but we know she was looking for hours, I'm pleased she found the idol. I wouldn't want to kill a chicken either, I worked on a farm that supplied KFC, and had one as a pet..! ..poor Henrietta, she had a bad leg, so I tried to nurse her, and to stop her getting put into a crate... But on survivor , where you're hungry, I'd eat a chicken...

Stupid, stupid Chris.
I didn't even feel bad for him because he did it to himself by opening his fat trap.
That being said, I can't stand Kelly Wentworth. And what was the deal with all the faces she was making at tribal? There were a few times where she looked straight up evil!
I hope she gets voted off soon!

I haven't gotten a chance to watch the episode just yet, but after reading all your post, I see my eye candy got voted off the island. Now who am I going to look at? (Don't anybody say 'Joe.')

If the contestants were given cute cuddly lambs to kill instead of lowly chickens I'm sure the reaction would be different. We all remember the revolt against Sandra when she wanted to slit the throat of a lamb caught by other contestants. They were horrified and they released the lamb rather than kill it. The point is, these people are not actually marooned on an island fighting to stay alive. They are tv show contestants in a controlled environment. monitored by all kinds of people who obviously are not going to let them starve to death. Other forms of protein can be given to the players like powdered eggs, Quinoa, beans, nut butter and so on. They all are packed with protein. It's not necessary to behead chickens. Their lives are wasted for entertainment purposes only.

But this is a competition for a million dollars. Food on the hoof that is turned away after the merge, if that ever happens, at least becomes a level playing field. But these chickens, even if just for the eggs, will soon be divided among people who lost that challenge. So it's a bad strategy even if it seems to make moral sense at the time.
Wendy isn't a vegetarian at all. She has confessed to eating meat when someone sanitizes it for her.
I have often wondered what restrictions the players are given as to what they are allowed to kill and eat on the island.
And if these chickens are not killed, is Jeff going to find them a nice no-kill home, which I believe happened to Mark? Seems unlikely.
Tell me which food challenges involved animals you know were humanely raised? I doubt that is the case when the challenge is sponsored by a major commercial outfit. I don't like eating inhumanely raised food.

Thank you. Finally someone trying to save the chickens. I wouldn't have campaigned the way Wendy did as she put a massive target on her back but I luv'ed that she "borrowed" the flint.
Chris was an idiot. With Wendy, Dave, Anchor Man, and Chris they had the 4 votes needed to vote Wentworth out but Chris just had to blab to War Dog.

If they aren't brought to the island then that question doesn't have to be asked.

I, too, am rooting for the extinction island people. As for the chicken thing, I can't get on our board with Wendy's stance. We should only be eating the happy, free range chickens and not the ones that are mass produced if we chose to eat chicken at all. Because that encourages good chicken raising practices and not the poor mass producing meat raising practices in the US. So even worse that she will support mass produced chicken eating, but not eat the happy, free range ones! Those are the chickens to be eating. I don't know if I like her because she is cute and funny or if there is actually something redeeming in her as a player for the show. I am starting to think it may just be the former.
Also, I like the clip of Aubry finding the idol. I liked her before and helped redeem her back in my eyes as someone to root for after falling down a few notches with the failure of the lame same speech. I hope she uses it well.

I think JT was the one who said so in an interview.

Oh my God...it is NOT. Maybe survival as a player in a game...but it's never been about a person actually surviving. It's a gameshow.

It's a gameshow where many of them will be severely challenged by a lack of food, compared to what they have been used to. And they all know the value of a full belly when it comes to challenges.

I finally watched the show. I'm not entirely clear on how the whole extinction island angle will come into play, but I'm liking it so far. Part of that is because the other cast members don't even know it exists, so at least there's the anticipation of how they'll react once it's been revealed.
Wendy is so sweet and silly and giggly ...... but releasing the chickens is unforgiveable. Hiding the flint was bad enough, but why go on Survivor if you feel that strongly about a cause? She should have left well enough alone.

If they were not swapping tribes, she would have put her own team at a disadvantage. I wouldn't forgive that, and would write her name down at the very next TC!

I would be against killing the chickens especially since you have two hens that will lay at least 8 eggs a day! That's some good protein considering the circumstance. Plus fish is a nice addition. What a meal!

What a meal! I have always read not to expect more than one day per day, if any, and that assumes it is an egg-laying variety and the hen isn't too stressed to lay. The rooster is irrelevant, just that the eggs will be infertile.

They'll need to stop antagonizing or just plain old leave the birds alone and maybe consider building a pen for them. Happy chickens, happy belly!
