I think the contestants are given great credit for making a song their own. They are never given a specific song to do.....they pick from a list that fits the criteria. Laci was commended for taking a rock song and turning it into a conutry ballad a few performances ago. I am sure those who have emerged as artists can do that.

What I hope to see with the contestants is if they are able to sing in different ways. For instance, Jeremiah has a wonderful range, but can he sing an upbeat, peppy, happy song? Can Eddie Island sing a heartfelt serious ballad? Can Alejandro show range, some force to his voice, and some varieties of song choices? Can Uche sing something serious and straight - and pull it off - if that is the assignment without jumping all over the stage? Can Dimitrius sing something happy? ETC. They all have their styles, but the best American Idols were the ones who could take whatever assignment was handed to them, modify it, and sing it well even when it wasn't their style or genre. None of that matters to me as much as seeing the contestants master their genre with excellence.

Interesting that you mention none of the ladies involved. Are you just dismissing them as competitors completely? No, frankly I didn't have a list in hand, and I was trying to think of people and issues off the top of my head. It might have been a Senior moment. Laci is so country that she could have trouble with trying to sing another genre, but Madison like Maddie is going to take that assignment with ease. Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert were also able to do well with that assignment. Riley may or may not do well changing things up. She is eager and teachable. I could see that the other night. How much personal instruction will she get? She may simply need more time to season and grow. I could see who, how and why they were going to eliminate the other nights, but the American public? Man, that is something else. Who knows how that is going to go down. My personal thought is that the guys are a stronger bet this year, but you just can't tell with millions of people from all ages and all over voting. I guess we will see.

That may be the creativity in part that Razor was talking about. When they are so clearly one genre, and they are given an assignment that is another genre, how do they do? Can they adapt it to their genre? (creativity) Can they sing through it anyway, and it still sounds good ~ example: Maddie's Carrie Underwood country assignment. Maddie sang "Will You Say I Told You So?" without the country flare but in such a haunting way that Luke said he thought he needed to go get a beer! I myself remember thinking, "Sigh...you really screwed up this time, didn't you?" ( not Maddie - whoever the person is telling the story)
