We don't have a series name OR a premiere date, but there have been casting announcements for a while now.
The biggest name attached to the project so far is Naomi Watts, but quite a few other cast members have been named, including Miranda Richardson and the amazing John Simm (my favorite Master on Doctor Who)
From what I've heard, the pilot for GOT was terrible, leading to the recasting of both Dany and Catelyn, and A LOT of reshoots. Look how that turned out! I get that HBO doesn't want to put out a substandard product, but I'm going to choose to believe that this show will happen.

I'm definitely in! I don't see them abandoning the series, this season's premiere had incredible ratings and I'm sure the finale will blow that out of the water. I just hope it doesn't take them a long time to get it going...

Oh, I'm totally on board for all of them, I'm just extra excited about a Targaryen-focused series.

Oh, wow. I thought the one with Naomi Watts was already greenlighted. But, at least we're getting something!

This sounds familiar, doesn't it? blindgossip.com/one-expensive-mistake/#more-99435
Even if all of this were true why would they not try to salvage it? Like I said upthread, the first pilot for GOT was rumored to be terrible. They recast Dany AND Catelyn, did a bunch of rewrites and started over again. If HBO spent so much money on that pilot, I don't understand why NOTHING was worth saving.
I'd disagree with one thing in that blind - I'd never call Naomi Watts, "major star power." I have no trouble believing she lacked charisma.

I listened to Fire and Blood on audible. It was good. Of course, we only have the first half of that book. Can I be so immersed in Fire and Blood that I forget about season 8 of Game of Thrones? I do not think so. I will just be happy with Fire and Blood as it is.
I don't think the Naomi Watts show was thought out enough as to direction. With House of Dragons, they have something to expand on.

The official trailer for House of the Dragon just dropped and it looks incredible! youtu.be/DotnJ7tTA34I Just started reading Fire and Blood. We'll see if I finish before the series premiere in a month! I'm debating a GOT series re-watch too.
ETA: There are now reports of a Jon Snow-focused sequel starring Kit Harrington. Not sure if it's a done deal, but I'd totally watch Snow.

I've listened to the official podcast for the show and it's sort of a mixed bag. The man who co-hosts is a full-on superfan of the show and the books. He knows more than probably anyone but GRRM about this world - he moderated the HOtD panel at ComicCon this year. OTOH< the woman who co-hosts watched the series back in the day, but seems to only remember about half of it. They did an episode focusing on the geography of Westeros and she said something about not having looked at a map in a long time. Why, if you're co-hosting a podcast about the geography of Westeros, would you not look at a map ahead of time? I can't tell if she's trying to act like she knows less, in order to make the newbies to this world feel better or she's really that unprepared. They have had a few good interviews - one with Paddy Considine and Matt Smith and another with Steve Toussaint - that I think were done at ComicCon. They were all enjoyable and the interviewer (the male co-host of the podcast) asked really good questions. I'll keep watching, although I'll probably roll my eyes from time to time over this woman who seems to not know that much about the GOT world. It would be like hosting a podcast about the Bachelor franchise and not knowing how the whole rose thing works. The reviews of the premiere are very good, so far. I'm so glad! If she show had been a stinker, it would have been such a bummer. in.mashable.com/entertainment/35985/house-of-the-dragon-early-reviews-critics-think-prequel-can-redeem-game-of-thrones-disastrous-finale

I watched, and will likely re-watch as I am sure I missed something with so much going on. It was good, much better than the last season of GoT at least, lol. I will be happier once they settle into the adult actors I think, which I hope is sooner rather than later. I may not have Charles Dance this time around BUT I will take Graham McTavish as a replacement. The main issue I had was seeing Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh from The Crown as Prince Daemon (I know he was The Doctor too but I don't watch Dr. Who).

I just needed to get past his Crown performance lol. Once he got more evil and less whiney it wasn't as bad I will be re-watching for sure, I think I will do it right before I watch next week's. I guess that's another issue I have, other services have spoiled me with all the season's episodes at once, I no longer like to wait!! Now if only GRRM would finish that last damn book.... grrrr!

FireWoman I have absolutely given up on GRRM ever finishing that book. He might finish book 6, but he'll never finish the series, whether it's 7 books or 8. He just won't live that long. The fact that he acts insulted when people question whether or not he'll live long enough to finish the books tells me he's more than a bit delusional. Book 5 came out in 2011 (right near the end of the first season of GOT), so it's been over 11 years, which is longer than the wait between 4 and 5 (6 years, IIRC). It's really disappointing, but I've just told myself that it will be a nice surprise if I actually get to read the end of the story in his words. He's just too distracted by all of these other projects. IMO, not finishing the series will harm his legacy.
I thought the premiere was great, although yeah, that was the 11th Doctor plating Daemon. I'll never not see Matt Smith as the Doctor. In The Crown, he was the Doctor playing Prince Phillip. I thought he was okay, but he's definitely the weak link for me. There are other actors in the series that I know - Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans and Graham McTavish, but none are SO recognizable as MS. His face is SO unusual that he can't fully disappear into a character, at least for me.
It amazes me that Rhys Ifans has gone from the goofy roommate in Notting Hill to THIS. I thought he was excellent as Otto Hightower. I love that we're finally seeing the Hightowers - a casualty of GOT, along with Jon Connington, Strong Belwas and (sort of) "Young Griff."
Did you all catch Rickon Stark swearing fealty to Viserys and Rhaenyra?
I loved seeing King's Landing in a different era. The dragon pit in its full glory vs. how it looked in season 8 of GOT. The courtyard of the Red Keep, but without the map Cersei had painted on it. The Iron Throne the way GRRM wrote it. The more colorful dragons.
You could also see the difference in King's Landing with respect to the people. The street scenes were more vibrant and there were more people walking around. In the tournament, the stands were filled with cheering crowds. Maybe it's also that this show has a bigger budget, based on the huge success of GOT, but if you go back and watch that first tournament in GOT, it seems like a paltry number of people watching. It feels like a kingdom/house in decline.
You knew Aemma and the baby were goners and not just because we've all seen the previews showing Viserys naming Rhaenyra his heir. It was obvious that was going to happen, but I was okay with how they handled it. I thought the editing worked really well, going back and forth between the birthing room and the tournament.
If this is episode 1, I can't wait to see where they go!

I absolutely love the new opening. I had goosebumps. Low key episode but a lot going on...that "date" between Viserys and Laena was so cringey. Rhaenyra swooping in to back Daemon down and get the dragon egg was awesome, Viserys dropping his new wife bomb and Corlys stomping off to plot with Daemon....yikes. Is the Iron Throne rejecting Viserys or does he have some weird disease? Also: Laena's wig is ridiculous.

I loved Rhaenyra swooping down for the egg and grabbing it when it was thrown to her.

It's enough like GOT to feel a part of that "world," but different enough to feel new.
It's hard to watch this show knowing what happens to some of the characters. There was actually a scene in season 3 of GOT where Joffrey tells Margaery what happens to Rhaenyra. I wonder if they're going to follow through on that AND several other things with that character, including that (in the book) she marries {Spoiler} Daemon - yes, her uncle!
I loved the scene with Rhaenyra riding Syrax to Dragonstone to retrieve the egg. I also loved seeing Dragonstone again. Fun, also, to see Harrenhal last week, looking much less rundown that we saw in GOT after it was destroyed by dragon fire.
Yeah, the child bride stuff is super cringey. IIRC, Dany was supposed to be 13 in the books, but they aged her up for the series, rightly knowing that viewers would be super uncomfortable watching a child be married off and raped. While Alicent is supposed to only be 14, the actress looks much older than the little girl playing Laena. Totally agree waywyrd - that wig was wearing her!
We know they're aging Rhaenyra and Alicent (as well as Laena and her brother Laenor), so I'm disappointed that we'll likely never see Milly Alcock and Emily Carey again. IMO, Milly is a star. She's so powerful, even when Rhaenyra is just standing in the room. Kind of a bummer that they're moving forward so quickly away from those younger characters because it means we won't see those actresses again

Alas, Crabfeeder, we hardly knew ye. Not one line of dialogue and we didn't even get to see Daemon chop you up. Phooey. Viserys' "hunt" was pretty pitiful (notice his two missing fingers?), but I liked the ties to Robert Baratheon's future hunt. Drunk, wild boars, the elusive white stag...I wonder if Rhaenyra letting it go has any meaning... Have they said how closely they're going to follow the book?

Drunk, wild boars, the elusive white stag...I wonder if Rhaenyra letting it go has any meaning... Have they said how closely they're going to follow the book? I read an interview with GRRM and he said that the scene he hates the most from the entire series of GOT is that boar hunt in season one. It was NOT what it should have been and that's mainly because the budget wouldn't allow for more. The hunt scene in this episode of HotD was exactly what he pictured - the number of people, the pavilions, all of it. I do think the scene in GOT worked - just like the jousting tournament did - to show a royal house in decline.
I loved the dichotomy of Viserys ineptly killing that stag - I couldn't even watch even though it was a CGI stag (Heck, I still tear up over that CGI tiger on WD. #ripshiva) - that others had tied down and held in place for him to kill and Rhaenyra stabbing the bejesus out of that boar. I also like that she chose to not kill the white hart. The scene of her marching back into camp covered in blood, with a dead boar in tow was excellent. A total boss move. With every episode, I like Milly Alcock more and more and I dread the episode when they age Rhaenyra and Emma D'Arcy takes over. I'm sure I'll like Emma too, but I feel like Milly deserved more time.
The keep jumping ahead in the timeline. I wonder if they're eventually going to just slow down and tell the story in "real time." I wish the showrunners had taken their time a bit more. At this point, it feels like they can have as many seasons as GOT if they want them.
waywyrd - I have no idea how closely the show will follow the book, although with GRRM as an exec producer with more of a say than he had in GOT, I think it'll probably follow the book more closely than GOT did. We already know he asked for more colorful dragons and a few other things. I do like that it's easier to tell whose dragon is whose.
Re: Viserys' missing fingers, did anyone catch the green glove fingers he had on in one scene? They didn't remove them in post. It's shades of the coffee cup in GOT I'm sure they have since fixed the error, but I still have the episode on my DVR.
Is this the first time we've seen a non-Targaryen ride a dragon...or at least a living dragon (RIP Viserion ) when Laenor rode his dragon Seasmoke at the Stepstones? I'll admit that it took me a minute to figure out who that was. The Crab Feeder was a good villain - and NO dialogue! - but I think his death was necessary to show Daemon's growth and change. I think the Daemon we see next will be very different.
This is the first episode where I didn't watch Matt Smith and see the Doctor playing Daemon Targaryen. He was excellent with pretty much NO dialogue for that last half of the episode.
The showrunners confirmed that the mask the Crab Feeder wore is the same one that the Sons of the Harpy wore in Mereen on GOT. Obviously, his was pretty wrecked, but it was the same mask. I love the call backs (calls forward?) to GOT.
