Too much corruption in figure skating. More accurately the entire Russian Olympic Committee.

More accurately the entire Russian Olympic Committee. I agree Bearcata. Win at any cost. I can't imagine the pressure the athletes are under. What is really scary is what happens to all these doped athletes when they get older, have children? Do the athletes have medical issues later in life? Mental issues? Dead children? Handicapped children? Who knows? Does anyone track this stuff?

Now the female on the Spanish pairs team was found with a positive drug test with steroids in her system. Her team placed 11th in the pairs final.

Do they not drug test all athletes? This Olympics just seemed blah. I know they were hailing Kamila as the greatest skater ever but I didn't think she was any better than some of the others. She does a quad. We saw what happens when you are under extreme pressure. My favorite part was Nathen Chen. He is phenomenal. The two AMerican women bobsledders were great too.

Kamila does 2 quads and a triple axel cleanly. Doing clean triple axel is very difficult for most women. Well Kamila did great in the Team Event and you could see how good she was. However, if she had done well in ladies event I don't see how much better then then Anna Shcherbakova, who won the gold. All three of the ROC ladies easily can earn 100 points for the technical component of the score while the other countries top ladies do well earning 70 points. I watched both the short and long programs with all the contestants. You can easily see who is better.

The girl that won silver, Alexandra Trusova, did 5 quads with her hands over the air to increase difficulty, but there were no artistic components to her program because she doesn't think she needs it. However the judges did not agree and awarded the gold to Anna who had both technical and artistic components to her program. Afterwards, Alexandra had a full on hissy fit screaming at her coaches that it was not fair that everyone else gets gold and she does not. Believe me people care about the artistic side of skating, watching some just skate, skate, jump, skate, skate, jump, skate, skate, jump with no feeling not caring about the music or caring about the performance is boring. This is a big reason I prefer watching the ice dancing over the other figure skating events. I must admit the pairs are getting better as they used to be just skate, skate, jump, skate, skate, lift but they definitely have upped their artistic components, just watch the winning Chinese pair. Even the majority of the men upped their game. Most of the costumes were exquisite.

I get that because those things are hard to do. I agree with you I do like the ice dancing.

We liked the speed-skating. Surprisingly I ended up watching a lot of the biathlon events. When it aired on USA the entire event was covered and they had great commentators that engaged the audience and you really got into the event. The highlight of the figure skating to me is always Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir's fashion show and commentary. The entire team including Terry Gannon and Tanith White did an outstanding job commenting on events and explaining the scoring system.

If any of you haven't watched Icarus on Netflix, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's about the Russian doping scandal. I had no idea the corruption ran so deep. IMO, if any athlete on the team competing in the team event tests positive, none of the team gets their medals. The Russian team should be disqualified in the team event and the US, Japan and Canada should be 1-2-3. It already stinks that they didn't get a medal ceremony. I think of Vincent Zhou getting Covid and then not even having the team medal ceremony as a memory I think the reason the test results come out "late" is because there are multiple samples tested. IIRC, they give samples after every event. If Sample A tests negative, they're good. If it tests positive, then they go on to test another sample and maybe that is a more complicated process so they make 100% sure to be accurate. A false negative could ruin a career. I can feel sad for Valieva, but still think she shouldn't have been allowed to skate. Watching her in the free skate was heartbreaking. Like THAT was preferable to just not letting her skate? That was abusive. I missed the whole skating gala on the last day of the Games. I thought I'd recorded it on my DVR, so I didn't bother tuning into watch it on NBC. Then, even though multiple sites said it was available on Peacock, only the American skaters were in a very edited down version of the gala. It was maybe 45 minutes, max
Even though they didn't place very high in the pairs event, it was so nice to see Vanessa James with her new partner. I felt so sad for her when that scandal with Morgan Cipres hit and she lost her partner and her coach. She's too special to not get to skate again.

I've lost count of how many well-known folks in the world of figure skating have been suspended or banned by Safe Sport. This abuse and horrible behavior seems to be rampant and not just in skating. This time, it's Peter Oppegard, who, among other things, BIT a skater on the arm.
