Since we're smack dab in the middle of the US Open, I've been watching a lot of tennis. They don't usually show much of the Legends matches, so I went looking for info about them (I think they played this year before the first round). Instead, I found this video, which is absolutely terrific. It's for the Tennis Legends podcast with Boris Becker, Mats Wilander and John McEnroe, but they've got Ivan Lendl with them this time. SO much fun to hear their take on the current players and look back at their own careers. video.eurosport.com/tennis/us-open/2019/there-is-an-acceptance-of-losing-tennis-legends-podcast-debate-greatness-of-big-three_vid1235204/video.shtmlIt's been fun to see Coco Gauff emerge, although I think the commentators who predicted she'd give Naomi Osaka a lot of trouble in their match (and maybe even win) last night were off. She's still 15 years old and Naomi is the #1 player in the world. I figured (and, amazingly, I was right! ) there would be a close first set and then a short second set with Osaka winning. That being said, the moment they had after the match was the very definition of kindness and good sportsmanship on Osaka's part. www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/27510249/naomi-osaka-coco-gauff-teach-lesson-humility-sportsmanshipI'm pleased Serena is still in it, but I don't know that she can win. I'd be thrilled to see her get another Slam, but her time away from the game really made it more interesting. I like it when the wealth is spread around a bit! As for the men's game? If it's not Federer, I want someone other than the top three win. I'd love to see one of the new guys get in there....unless Roger can win and then I want Roger to win!

I just love Coco Gauff, I know they always tout a young player but I think she has got it. I watched her play double with another US player McNally who played Serena , and they were both really good. I think the US womnen's game has some great up and coming players who are getting results.
On the men's side, I love Rafa and would love to see him win. My second choice would be Federer, third Stan. I'm not sure if anyone is ready to come up and win this thing. So many disappointments with the big up and coming names. Maybe it will be Cilic who has won before.

With Nole out, I think it's set up for another Rafa - Roger final. If so, I really hope Roger's able to pull out one more win. He did drop the first set in his first and second round matches, but then rolled over his opponents. These last two rounds have been insanely one sided. If he keeps playing like that, he could really win. I have to say, If Federer doesn't win, I would LOVE to see Monfils get his first Slam. I always enjoy watching him. Great player and tons of personality. That match with Andujar was so much fun to watch! Fun that both Monfils and Svitolina are still in it. I don't know if Svitolina can beat Serena or Monfils can beat Rafa in the semis (if they both get there). When was the last time a bf/gf pair won each the title at a Slam? Agssi and Steffi at the French in '99? I don't know how Serena matches up against Svitolina, but she seems to have a pretty clear road to the finals. IMO, this is her best chance in a while for another Slam. The women's field is much deeper than the men's. More players with the ability to win and who ARE winning. It's like no one is a shoe-in any more. That unpredictability is kind of fun. If you look at the women left in the draw, Serena's the only one who's won a Slam and I don't think any of the others have even made it to a Slam final and most haven't made it to the semis or even the quarters. I've enjoyed seeing Gauff play too. I think so many people just expect her to start winning right NOW. She's still a kid. She has plenty of time to grow and improve. It'd probably be better for her to NOT win any big titles for a while. She needs to pay her dues without the constant expectation of winning Slams. If she keeps her focus and *knock wood* doesn't have any injuries, I think she could have a great career. If she plays like this at 15, imagine what she's going to be like at 25! And because I went down a Google hole after mentioning Andre and Steffi .....I found that their son is a very good baseball player: www.maxpreps.com/news/pkV5uAzILEyxqvBPe-Fz2w/jaden-agassi,-son-of-andre-agassi-and-steffi-graf,-making-name-for-himself-in-baseball.htm He looks so much like his mother. I don't see much of Andre!

Yeah, it's clear that whatever the reason for that injury time-out, it caused his game to suffer a lot, especially in that last set.
With Monfils out too, I sort of don't care who wins. I'd like it to be someone new, but Medvedev is kind of a jerk.
I looked for pics of Andre and Steffi's daughter, but there's nothing of her in the last 10 years or so. They've done a nice job of shielding her from the media.

Well the Nadal fan in me is pleased. I do like Schwartzman and was kind of cheering for him. It is amazing when you think about the big three, how well they are still doing. Still in there, still winning. I know it gets old and I would love to see someone new break through but so far its not happening. The women's game is still so spread out. You still have Serena but there is more of a variety in the slam winners than the men's. I will say Berrettini has been playing very well. He could be the big surprise.

Well this is turning out to be a CRAZY Open! I'm still hoping Berrettini can pull out a win against Nadal. I'd love to see one of the new guys get a Slam. It's been too long since a player who ISN'T one of the big three won a Slam.
I don't want to jinx Serena, but it sure looks like she's got a great chance to win this one! She played SO well today.

Very up and down.

Hopefully at this point, Serena knows to go into the final knowing how hard she's got to fight for it. I think that with the Open last year and Wimbledon this year, she was a victim of overconfidence. I think tomorrow, she'll have more of an underdog mindset. At the same time, Andreescu risks going onto the court thinking that the last two finals that Serena has been in she's crumbled, and it COULD leave her feeling a little overconfident.
I know this much ... Patrick Mouratoglou will be sitting on his hands the entire match!!!!

Eh, Meghan Markle doesn't have that kind of power.
Serena just got bested - for the second time in a month - by a player half her age, who's on fire right now. She beat Serena in the final of the Rogers Cup last month and, at the time, Serena said she expected to see Andreescu in the US Open final as well. Whatever the pundits say, Serena just a) isn't back to her pre-pregnancy form and b) is now fighting time. She's going to turn 38 in a few weeks, which is well beyond when most players retire. She's the goat, but she's not immune to aging.
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I'm actually hoping Nadal wins tomorrow. Medvedev is such a jerk, I just can't bear to see him win. I mean, the crowds at Flushing Meadows get crazy, but I can't remember the last time I heard that much booing when I player stepped on the court. It's because of his poor sportsmanship and behavior on the court. I just don't like to see that kind of person rewarded.

I see people call for Serena to retire but I don't think so. If this is the case, should Federer or several other players give it up. She is still making it to finals which is no easy task and if she enjoys playing she should play. She might not be in pre-pregnancy form but there are a lot of players who wish they could have a year like hers. I like to see us "older" people still be in there.
Critical, I was wondering if you would pick Nadal. I have this feeling about Medvedev and I only hope I'm wrong. I don't know much about him but if he is a big jerk, I really hope he loses. One thing you can say about Nadal is that he is NOT a jerk. As for them booing Medvedev, I think Kyrigios holds that record!

I don't think Serena should retire, no way. She'll know when it's time, nobody else, Not saying you did but some people are saying it on SM. I hardly think she should. She is still hands down on the of the best women out there playing. She is fairly consistent in GS even with the final loses. She still someone ends up being one of the last women standing. The women's game is so up and down right now, with the upsets and the players coming out of nowhere and doing so well and there is Serena.
Watching the match yesterday, I think Andreescu played fine but I think Serena played awful and that was the key to her loss. I honestly can see Andreescu being a one slammer. I don't think her matches leading up to the final were against a top 10 player. I wish her well but I think this was a lucky and deserved of course, GS win.

They probably don’t even realize she’s still playing since she often doesn’t make it out of the first week! I agree with you - if a person still enjoys playing and the fans still love watching, why stop? Sure there are some players who choose to go out at the top. But others don’t. Different strokes for different folks!

The crowd was booing him during the match and when he came out onto the court.
You could hear it at the beginning of this final too. The crowd booed him and went crazy cheering for Rafa. Apparently, Medvedev feeds off the negative energy, which tells you a lot about him as a person. Meanwhile, the crowd is chanting Nadal's name in the fourth set. They're all practically WILLING him to win.
Here's an explanation of why this crowd, in particular, is against him: As for Serena retiring, I think there are an awful lot of self-proclaimed tennis "experts" out there on SM who think they know Serena's career and abilities better than she does. Probably the same guys who, in that survey a while back, believed they could win a game off her
I think Andreesu has a nice career ahead of her, but I really wish people wouldn't weigh these young players down with such expectations. We've seen it this time with Osaka and with Gauff. Just let them play and improve and they'll either get there or they won't. The pressure isn't helpful, IMO. I think that's part of what messed with Serena this time. The weight of "24" - even though she says is doesn't matter to her - has got to get to her. Every interview I've seen with her covers that number. She might say she doesn't care, but I can't imagine how she couldn't care. It's a big deal. I really hope she gets it and it would be great if she did it at the Australian, exactly three years after her last Slam.

Yeah, you know I'm always rooting for a new player to break through (unless, of course, they're playing Roger ), but Medvedev is a petulant jerk. I don't like to see that kind of behavior rewarded in any way. Frankly, I think someone from the USTA and/or from his own tennis federation needs to give him a talking to. I can't imagine that attitude will help him get good sponsorships.

We saw a local interview, and she didn't seem phased, just that she will have to think higher now, as to where she wants to go, I think she loves tennis as much as Serena, so pressure on them both perhaps. For now she gets a parade when she comes home..lol. I'm not a huge tennis fan, until someone like Bianca pops onto my screen..

I hope so. I like her. I do agree, we will see. Though poor girl, now the pressure on her to deliver at every slam will be immense. Just like with Osaka. And I even see if with Coco. Lets just let them play and do their best.
And I agree, that Venus should retire before Serena, but hey, she loves playing. Let her play. Go out on top (and sometimes too soon) or play while you still can and still love the game.
We saw a local interview, and she didn't seem phased, just that she will have to think higher now, as to where she wants to go, I think she loves tennis as much as Serena, so pressure on them both perhaps. For now she gets a parade when she comes home..lol.I'm not a huge tennis fan, until someone like Bianca pops onto my screen.. Well it is a big deal for Canada. I always thought it would be Raonic who broke thru first.
