It seems like everytime a woman beats Serena in a GS final, the commentators declare that she's the future of tennis, will continue to win grand slam events, and we're not done hearing from _________. I don't want to take anything away from Osaka or Halep ... or talk down Andreescu too early - but none of them has risen yet to the dominance that was heralded. There are many talented women playing at the moment, but no dominant force like we've had in the past. Playing the match of your life against Serena Williams once does not make you the future of tennis. It's a tough mantle to keep putting on these women. I think they need to start waiting to see who can repeat a few times before they declare every winner to be the future we're going to hear from a lot.

Imagine the pressure Osaka has been under. Until a woman is more consistent we just need to let them play.

Besides forfeits due to injury, Andreescu has not lost a match since March, and is 8-0 against the top 10 players she's faced in 2019. Some of the big names she's beaten include: Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens and, of course, Serena Williams. :-)

The downside to the women's game being what it is these days is that I think with as many women as have gone to the top but not stayed there, there are not as many well known names to maintain the strongest fan base. But on the flip side, I remember the days where Stefi Graf or Martina Hingis were SO dominant and it just got boring with one of them winning tournament after tournament. So at least now we get compelling stories of women who work hard and it pays off.

I remember the Graf days and how excited I was to have Seles come along and give her a run for her money.

Bianca was on The View, she's very down to earth, I'm proud of what she's accomplished. The crowd was loud for Serena, that's why I said she was so focused. She's clearly in awe of Serena, which is nice to see, or as Whoopi said, it's a sisterhood.

Raonic is approaching 30, so he's nearing the end of the time when he could really hit, at least to where he'd enjoy years at the top of the rankings.
IMO, the next male tennis player from Canada to hit is going to be Shapovalov. He's already challenging the top players and he's only 20. He's paying his dues and getting better. I think he'll be a top player in the next few years.

Osaka might have played poorly, I'll have to read up more and try to catch high lights, but I do think Coco is the real deal.

I was checking scores today and came across this story. Holy crap, how did I not hear about this? www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/28559287/brazilian-joao-souza-banned-life-match-fixingAs much as I follow tennis, I can't say I ever remember seeing Souza play, so it's not on the level of Pete Rose and his ban from baseball, but it's still pretty crazy. I'm actually glad that Coco is experiencing some losses too. I think it's going to help her in the long run to NOT win big right out of the gate and then have even more expectation weighing on her than she's already got. She's got plenty of time. Thrilled that Roger is into the quarters!

Thrilled that Roger is into the quarters! I don't recall having seen him play either. As for Coco, I agree, she needs to balance out those wins with losses for her to learn and grow. She has it but she has to stay grounded and not get too much too soon and burn out. And Rafa is too! Past Kyrgios, who I do not care for. Did you see the whole ball girl thing? Some people are saying he shouldn't have given her a kiss on the cheek. People don't seem to realize in European (and other) countries everyone kisses each other. Its not a sexualized thing. Nadal is hardly some perv.

I think it's fair to say that Coco has had her share of losses since she only has one WTA title. I think that since most of us first took note of her when she beat Venus, she's had a great balance of beating some names no one expected her to beat, and losing both to top talent and some matches where people expected her to have a chance. To me, the best thing she's got going for her is her parents. I love that they are both ever present when she's at a big tournament, and they seem to really care about what she does and cheer her on, but also don't come across like her tennis success defines the family. It probably helps that both of them have achieved great things in college athletics so they understand the ups and downs. When she does post match interviews, she comes across to me like she understands what a blessing she has, but she still comes across like her age. I've never been a big fan of the players who seem so perfect and crafted that they are like robots. I don't see that in her at all. I like that her parents have her linked in with Patrick Mouratoglou's team and that she's getting coaching at that level -- but that her dad is still ultimately the one in charge. It looks like they've got a good partnership going so that she can remain a kid her age while harnessing her talent.

That makes me sad for several reasons. First, it's my favorite of the Grand Slams. I just love it. Second though is that this may mean we never see several players at Wimbledon again, including Federer and Nadal (maybe even Nole?) because of their physical issues. Not to mention Serena and Venus. In the whole scheme of things, this isn't life or death, but it's still sad.

Another big question mark for me with all the cancellations this year is the Bryan Brothers. They'd announced at the start of the year they were retiring at the end of this season. Now, they are losing the chance to say goodbye to many of the tournaments that meant so much in their career. I've wondered if they would make the choice to play next year just for the chance to do a proper goodbye.

I agree! I give ESPN a lot of credit for trying to make it as exciting as they can. I've been entertained by the obsessive way they've been watching some of the coaches in the stands and analyzing who each player has brought as their 3 people.
I would like the chair umpires to start having some fun with it, and every now and then making announcements like "Quiet please ... quiet ... ladies and gentleman the players are ready to continue play"

In Andy Murray's match the other day, he went to challenge a call and the chair umpire held her hands out, like a foot apart, hinting that he probably didn't want to use one of his challenges on that call. He decided not to challenge the call
