Between the director's whining about the Left villianizing his movie and him talking about "how political correctness has ruined comedy" (as if racist, homophobic, and misogynist jokes were funny in the first place...maybe funny to a certain group, but not funny to those targeted?) it's really beginning to sour me on seeing this movie. I hope he shuts up soon. Apparently he even banned the press from the premiere. I wonder who is being the snowflake now?

As a person who isn't interested in comic book hero/villain-type movies (yes, I know I'm the only one ), I wasn't planning on seeing 'Joker.' But after hearing what the movie is REALLY about, I gotta say I'm thinking of seeing it. There's only one thing that's holding me back.... momrek06 , since you've already seen the movie, can I ask HOW violent are the violent scenes? You can PM me if you don't want to say too much in this thread. It's just that I don't like scary movies, blood, gore -- and all that stuff that people seem to thirst for. Yet, I know if I'm going to go see 'Joker,' I have to be willing to tolerate a certain level of violence. I'm trying to suss out whether or not I have what it takes to watch this movie.

Let me premise this by saying I have seen MUCH worse in violence like recently when we saw JOHN WICK 3. And last night we started watching PEAKY BLINDERS Season 4 on NetFlix OMG that was INTENSE. I think there has been way too much hype about violence and JOKER. It's more sad. Very sad. Arthur is a lost soul. He is laughed at, bullied, yelled at, threaten, fired from all his jobs and very very poor. Arthur has a violent side to him but its not 2 hours of killing. At all. Arthur just wishes he could be accepted by all. He fantasizes being accepted. Don't get me wrong there are moments that make you squeamish but again definitely not 2 hours of it. We chose a matinee (cheaper) to see the movie in case we felt like leaving but NOPE. We stayed and thoroughly enjoyed JP and his performance as JOKER.

Thanks momrek06 . If I go, it'll be during the matinee. I won't go after dark. I don't do well with violence ever since my own encounter. People going to see Batman & Robin comic book-type stuff are probably going to leave the theater disappointed, but I've always been interesting in what makes a person do evil things. And not to sound like I'm disrespecting the victims and sympathizing with the killer, but I truly believe that until more exploration is put into the "WHY," we're always going to have school shootings, concert snipers, McDonald's massacres and so forth. It's not going to go away on its own. Mental health is so important. JP said in an interview that that's what drew him to the movie. It takes the unpopular approach of examining the mind of the perpetrator. He said he knows there are going to be people who argue, "Well, I was bullied as a kid and I never killed anyone," but you have to expect as much.

Oh JosephD I understand. That was HORRIBLE what you went through. Definitely like Brett and I did, go during the day and buy the cheap seats (matinee) so you can easily leave. As far as JOKER, he is terribly flawed and his mental state has an effect on all his actions. {Spoiler} Joseph......in the movie we find out Arthur was horribly abused as a child by his Mother's boyfriend. Even being tied to a radiator and abused. His mother told him his whole life he was a loved child and always happy hence that is why she calls him "Happy" all the time. This hurts Arthur terribly that his Mother lied to him (I am guessing he blacked out those years) BUT Arthur knows he is FLAWED.

I have 2 questions about the movie that could make or break my going to see it: Is there extended or extremely graphic torture scenes? Is there specific graphic violence toward women, as in rape, torture, maiming?
I can handle some degree of violence, if necessary for the story line, but these are two things I just don't care to watch & don't find any excuse to use as entertainment. I guess these should be answered in spoiler method.

No. Neither.
It's more about mental illness than anything else and it is FANTASTIC. Joaquin was absolutely phenomenal. SO good...chills worthy good.
EVERYONE...go see it!!!

I guess these should be answered in spoiler method. It's not too intense. The violence is a little bit worse than The Dead Zone or Fatal Attraction, but not quite as bad as Final Destination. The movie is nowhere near as violent as any of the Godfather movies or Goodfellas.

Thank you to both of you for your answers. Sounds like it would rate an OK on the violence meter for me. I'll watch the theaters & go see it.

Finally saw Joker today and in full agreement with you. It's so much more about the psychological trauma (both physical and mental) that might create a Joker rather than a typical action packed violent movie (although there are some violent scenes). I thought it was outstanding.
