Sew 80's - The iconic Cyndi Lauper is both inspiration and guest judge for this totally tubular team challenge. Split into two teams, the designers must create cohesive mini-collections to pay homage to Cyndi's 80's fashion trailblazing that brought Punk mainstream. Enjoy the show!

Mess. I would have really used this opportunity to send Sergio home. There's being confident of your abilities and there's being an arrogant know it all, and he's the latter. He's not learning anything from his experience on this show. Even sadder, he feels like he has nothing to learn, because he thinks he knows it all.

Agreed. They totally called him out and they know his scam now -- he doesn't care about the challenges, he's just there for the exposure and screw them. And yet they kept him, because "good TV".
Maybe all the ghosts of the Lifetime years aren't fully exorcised yet...

He's not learning anything from his experience on this show. Even sadder, he feels like he has nothing to learn, because he thinks he knows it all. ABSOLUTELY. I personally can't figure out what Sergio is so arrogant about. That monstrosity he made tonight was terrible. No sense of design whatsoever. And he looks at the judges and says, "I don't care what you think". Would have liked to seen him get the boot instead of Melanie. Even Christian stated that Melanie has great execution. And it is pretty obvious that she has not been able to showcase her talents, because she has a different style. But..... I guess that is just the way it goes.
We learned tonight that even though Nancy is talented, she is NOT cut out for the group projects.
I am glad that Geoffrey won. I really liked his outfit; just so well made, fashionable, truly updated 80s, and very wearable. I can see Cyndy in that. I did love Victoria's as well; also well made and very flattering. But she has made something similar to this before. Yep; Geoffrey deserved this win.
Right now, I am thinking Geoffrey, Victoria in the final. Haven't figured the 3rd one yet.... Maybe Brittany or Shavi?

kocky_Kamikaze it looks like Melanie was eliminated and Sergio and Marquise were in the bottom three with her.

The editing surprise was that Team Chaos (and they were chaotic in their team approach) beat out Team Stripes who lead by Sergio, planned a collection; but with Team Stripes there was not enough leeway for the designers to process their own visions. The felt that in order to have cohesion in the collection they would all use safety pins in their accessory fabrication. That didn't work for everyone. I do wish the appointed team leader, Sergio, had been booted as his boring personality beat down on the others and they didn't even object.
Team Chaos excluded Nancy because of her free-wheeling approach to her design and turned her into a grumpy pumpkin. However, for emotionality, Geoffrey took the prize. He had me verklempt talking about how the very "idea" of Cyndy Lauper helped guide him into the designer he is and wants to be. I'm so happy for him that he shone in front of his idol.
Interesting show...but, it makes me wonder what Sergio is going to throw out there next.
I agree that Victoria will be in the finale, but I don't know about Geoffrey. This may have been his highlight.

Sergio Was so disrespectful - he dismisses Christian every time he comes in the work room. Now he dismisses the judges, who have many years of fashion expertise! He needs to come off his high horse. He’s not all that. I was disappointed in Nancy. I would have thought all those years working in corporate would have provided her with better teamwork and diplomacy skills. She looked sulky and pouty. No matter where you work, you need to get along with others. I loved the top two looks, both beautiful and flattering.

Sergio makes me wish the judges would eliminate people just based on their attitude. His outfit was bad, but his attitude is even worse.

She was trying to be a team player, and they excluded her and brushed her off. I don't know if it was ageism or just that shes got a very scattered way about her, but she didn't become sulky until they started excluding her and making decisions without her and then expecting her to toe their line. By that point, she was too pissed to care. I get that her chaotic "organic" way of designing is frustrating in a team setting, but I think they are just as responsible to find a way to work with her as she is with them. As for Sergio, he really should have gone. I wonder if they asked team stripes who the leader was, because it was clearly Sergio, and he led them in a bad direction for the whole collection, not just his own design. But I think it's true that they're keeping him for the drama and as someone we love to hate. (Maybe they also want to give him a chance to ruin his reputation even more each week. LOL)

Oh Sergio.... please go home. Seriously! I wonder at what point the other designers are going to realize he doesn't know what he's talking about and stop taking his advice. On a different front, I did love that Geoffrey won! His design was very cool, and it was so touching that Cyndi had played such an important role in his finding more confidence in himself as a kid.

Cyndi (along with Madonna, Annie Lennox, Janet Jackson and other 80s icons) really inspired a lot of us 80s kids. She was big, colorful, and just wanted to have fun. I have fond memories of going to thrift stores to search for the perfect Cyndi/Madonna get-up, which I would then wear to school. One of my HS had to completely rewrite their dress code just based on the outfits I wore daily. It was a very fun time full of experimentation and expression.

In my era, it was beatnik dress (all black with long stockings and a beanie if you could find one). All black clothes have been popular for awhile, but in the 50s/60s was groundbreaking. I tried and failed miserably.

I cracked up this episode when the judges were deliberating and they show Sergio in the back room saying who was on top/bottom and who was the best/worst (I forget the exact specific, but his comments were very specific) and then they immediately cut to the judges who say the exact opposite!

I caught most of the past episodes this week and thinking back to his "creations", he has had some hot messes. I don't recall the first paired challenge, but he did the Little House on the Prairie thing with the animal print---it did not fit the criteria, but being well made, he was in the middle. The Christmas challenge that he won was pretty far out there. If he left it with the beautiful print from the top, it would have been a great party dress but he seemed ( to me) that he was mocking the challenge by using the basket--- complete with bells--- to go over the top.
The black suit he made for Karli was OK ( Laverne liked the jacket) but the loop tie top seemed so 80s and not at all her style.
I think he constructs beautifully, but the styles have been not great and this was the worst week... and his attitude seemed like he wanted negative attention. Really curious if he is going to continue in this direction now that he has shown himself for what he is....trouble.

Me, too, silver18! I permed my shoulder-length hair trying for a wild hippie look, but I looked more like Weird Al! 😂 I loved all of the fun accessories! I had a pair of round wire-rimmed sunglasses with interchangeable lenses, including blue and yellow ones. Very cool!

After Cyndi mentioned adding tulle to most anything she found at the thrift store, I'm surprised no one incorporated it into their look in some modern way. I kept waiting for all of them to run to that section at Mood and not a single designer used it at all. I was also surprised at how much black was on the runway- it seems when they are told to modernize things, the designers always lean towards black, like that somehow makes it modern. I'm an 80's kid and black was definitely NOT the norm- color upon color upon color was what was 'in' and Cyndi epitomized that in every way.

I expected there to be tulle somewhere. Maybe not layers upon layers of ruffled tulle, but some pops of brightly-colored tulle, for sure. Even a little pop on Victoria's where the chiffon was would have worked.

Thank you! I was thinking the exact same thing. I laughed when Cyndi said that. I'm on the short side myself, so I can totally relate. I was in middle school when Lauper became huge, so I remember it vividly. Lots of color and patterns mixed and matched. The idea was to make it look like you had found random pieces lying around and somehow managed to pull it together and look cool. I loved Team Chaos and absolutely thought they should win, but even they didn't completely capture the 80's vibe.
Team Stripes should never have listened to Sergio. They went overboard trying to be cohesive, and so ended up looking all matchy-matchy. And that's not even counting how terrible some of their individual looks were. I was also fooled by the editing into thinking they probably win. When the finished looks came down the runway, though, I changed my mind. I remember thinking, "Team Chaos nailed it. That's much closer to the 80's than Team Stripes." Team Chaos' lack of cohesiveness actually worked in their favor, because they captured the spirit of the 80's, which was "do your own thing". I knew they were going to win when Cyndi told some judge, "Blondie wore an outfit just like that in one of her videos." Bingo.
Kao said:
Yes! I remember one of my friends was over-the-moon happy that she would get to dress as Lauper for Halloween. In addition to the clothes, her older sister was going to frizz out her hair and dye it to complete the look. That was my first real introduction to the power of celebrity. It's not about how much money you make; it's about making people want to imitate you. Coco Chanel knew that, too. When people asked why she didn't crack down on middle-class stores that produced knock-offs of her haute couture looks, she would just laugh. "It's free publicity!" She was flattered that women in all price ranges wanted to look like her. So take that, Sergio, with your "I'm God's gift to designing" attitude.

I totally got Nancy's frustration. NONE of them truly lived in the 80s. Geoffrey was born in the late 70s, but the rest of them were toddlers at the most. Nancy's the only one who REALLY lived it. Sergio is freaking 30. He knows nothing. Clearly. I graduated high school in the 80s in SoCal and NO ONE dressed like Cyndi Lauper in my world. The base color of most outfits was black. Maybe you'd add a color, but it wasn't all the crazy prints together and tons of neon the way TV shows seem to think (or sorority girls having an 80s party). I remember wearing plaid, but it was red plaid pants and then black everything else. Even going to concerts in LA, you didn't see many people dressed like Cyndi or any other pop star. Those were the outliers. I will say that my hair was pretty crispy, but I didn't get nearly the elevation of Cyndi's hair! Not only was Sergio's design NOT 80s-ispired in any way, it was also butt ugly. What is his fascination with ruffles? There was another challenge (the one with street wear) where he did something similar and it also didn't fit the challenge. Those chiffon-y looking tops with the ruffles are hideous. I can't imagine ANY woman wearing that, regardless of age.....well, maybe Eva Gabor in Green Acres I think the issue with Sergio isn't his skills, but his taste level.....and of course his attitude. I really wanted them to boot him just for his snotty attitude toward the judges. Elaine saying he was a little arrogant was a HUGE understatement. Can't wait for him to go home.

I graduated late 80s too and we had all the colors: neon accessories like rubber bracelets, socks, earrings, and those keychain things, "Frankie Says" T-Shirts, colored lace leggings like what Prince used to wear, Madonna style lace tops with short black skirts and leggings so maybe it was regional? At two of the HS I attended it was more conservative (except for me, I stuck out like a sore thumb, lol) but at my last high school we had the "House Music" kids (long Black skirts, White tailored shirts, black patent leather shoes, rhinestone brooches for both guys and girls and a lot of Marithé + François Girbaud), goth kids (all black) Madonna and Cyndi devotees, Duran Duran wannabees, dudes dressing like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys (There were a LOT of graffiti artists and break dancers at my school), dudes walking around looking like Sebastian Bach from Skid Row and more. It was absolutely insane and I loved every minute of it. Everone just experimented with clothes, colors, music...it was a fun time.
