The fashion competition genre is getting more crowded...
Next in Fashion stars Queer Eye's Tan France and designer/former model Alexa Chung. All 10 episodes of season 1 drop on Jan. 29th.

Oh good! It looks like this could be my Project Runway replacement! (I'm not feeling the Kloss/Siriano chemistry anyway) I like Tan France anyway so it's a win-win for me!

Watched the first two shows today and really, really liked it. Tan and Alexa are perfect as hosts. The designers are a mixed bag but tend to be on the more experienced side; 3/4 have gone to a good fashion school, and a lot of them have dressed celebrities. They had them pair off into teams right off the bat and at the end one team got voted off (which kinda sucks, especially for the first team eliminated because one of the people had issues about the very things that they got dinged on but went along with it for the sake of her team). Lots of talented people, and watching the runway shows is a joy. I also like the fact that all the clothes get a critique, not just the top and bottom. Not sure of they are going to stay in teams for the duration or if eventually they will split.

I'm two episodes in and I'm not really impressed. I don't like that they have to work in teams and are eliminated in teams. I've also gotten used to the more diverse body types of models on Project Runway. I've never heard of Alexa Chung before. The camera shot selection during the judges critiques is a bit dizzying.

She's pretty well-known in the fashion world as a model, writer and designer and is often on best dressed lists. She also dated Alexander Skarsgard for a while.
I watched the first episode and enjoyed it, although I find the team format problematic, especially in the first elimination where one clearly wanted and NEEDED to be there, while her partner was an ass to the judges.
I like the lack of budget and their access to whatever materials they need. I think it will, hopefully, lead to the designers being able to really create what they envision.
I love Tan and like Alexa a lot, so I'll keep watching!

I love Tan and like Alexa a lot, so I'll keep watching! Yeah, that was really hard to watch. She also made her concerns known to him and he basically brushed them off. I knew he was an ass when he was basically like "so?" when the model told the judges that she needed to pee and was unable to. The sad thing is I really liked the dress they made; it just needed to be looser and in a more forgiving fabric.

I knew he was an ass when he was basically like "so?" when the model told the judges that she needed to pee and was unable to. The sad thing is I really liked the dress they made; it just needed to be looser and in a more forgiving fabric. There was that moment when Tan pointed to the chain detail at the back of that dress and they told him it was sewn on in a way that meant the model was sewn into that dress. Then they said something about how the judges were looking for them to design in a certain way, but THEY were designing for the future. I immediately said, "A future when women don't have bladders?" She definitely had a crappy partner, which I guess is her own fault.
It does seem that some pairs know each other better than others. It'll be interesting to see if the longer relationships are more successful. Sometimes familiarity breeds contempt!

Yeah, some of the teams have worked together/longtime collaborators beforehand while others were just teamed up for the show and it shows. Certain teams (ie: Fabulous gay Army Guy and Scottish lady) completely got screwed by this format and I couldn't help but wonder how they would have done if they were by themselves. Ditto for the first team eliminated; it was obvious that the dude didn't care while the woman was working 3 jobs and this competition meant a lot to her.
I'm really enjoying the runways and really like these contestants. Every episode I'm sad because someone leaves. There is one episode (you'll know it when you see it) when a certain team should have went home even though I liked them; being that many times on the bottom is enough. Apparently it was such a hard decision to make that week they had everyone stay, which was nice.

Are we entirely sure that Daniel isn't Matthew Goode's younger brother? Good LORD, he's pretty. You could just slot him into the cast of the next Downton Abbey movie as Henry's long lost brother/cousin/whatever. I could listen to him speak all day long. Love a posh British accent. The editing on this show is hilarious. As soon as they get to a challenge that is a contestant's specialty, you know they're going home or at least ending up in the bottom

What a fantastic finale! Congrats to the winner.
The rewatch value on this show is very high. I haven't enjoyed a design show like this since the first 5 seasons of PR; even moreso because they didn't get rid of the more avant garde conceptual designers right off the bat.

One thing that I really appreciate about this show is instead of the mad dash to the fabric store they have access to a bunch of fabrics, notions, etc that fit the theme of the particular challenge they are working on and the designers pull from that selection. Quite helpful to have to choose from a curated selection instead of a whole store.

I have finished the first 9 episodes and am waiting a bit before I watch the finale. I like it better than PR and the designers are fabulous. I was amazed that of the original 18 there were two that literally could not sew.

Quite helpful to have to choose from a curated selection instead of a whole store. I like that too and that, if they don't see what they want, they can get it. While I can appreciate making the designers adhere to a budget (PR), I love that the designers on this show can just focus on making what they want to make. I'll admit I was a bit horrified when that $650(?)/yd fabric got smashed up. I also LOVE the fabric printing machine that lets them create new patterned fabric.
The other thing I like about this show is that we get to hear the judges' discussion during the runway show.

I have finished the first 9 episodes and am waiting a bit before I watch the finale. I like it better than PR and the designers are fabulous. I was amazed that of the original 18 there were two that literally could not sew. Yes, my lil Leopard Prince is a creative director. They tend to be the ringmasters of design; they come up with the concepts while others implement the vision but rarely get their hands dirty. While you have amazing designers like Galliano and McQueen who can be in both roles (those people are like unicorns) a lot of creative directors do very little design/grunt work. In my field of design there are people who turn down the CD role for that reason; they like to get their hands dirty.
Leopard Prince was fortunate enough to be teamed with someone who loved to create, was an excellent sewer and enjoyed collaborating. They made a very strong team, but when they were separated you could see the shortcomings. He was a lovely person who enjoyed the entire experience, and it was nice to see.

I felt very bad for the lady in the first team that was eliminated I kinda felt her partner sabotaged that challenge and then he blew off the elimination as if it was nothing but it was everything to her and her family. I wish her good luck.
What amazes is how appreciative the other designers are for this opportunity.
What amazes is how talented these designers are.
What amazes is for really creative people that are so open minded about fashion and design they can be so suck/rigid on their aesthetic that is sinks them.

Wow...I placed my comments in the Netflix thread since I hadn't looked for a separate thread. I binged today from start to finish and fell in love with everything about it. I'm going to be one of those who follows Minchu's suggestion and watches it again.

I’m really happy for the winner. What an enjoyable show. I will probably watch again too, just to enjoy the designs on the runway again. Amazingly talented folks.
Loved how they all got along and encouraged and helped each other....even the #2 finalist helped the winner come up with part of their finale look reveal. And #2 seemed genuinely happy for the winner. Also liked how there was no PR style drama....no Sergios or Victorias to be found.

I'm sad it was cancelled! I really enjoyed the designers they had and the show format. I have to admit, though, that so the shows have kinds of started blending together.
Ok a different note, I saw that Tan became a U.S. citizen this week and send very happy about it.

I did not know it was cancelled. I am just now watching it.
I liked the hosts.
With the pairings, I did not know who were responsible for what. They did not get down to single competitions until the last 3 shows. So it didn't let the designers get credit for their talent.
I like the final male finalists....very talented. I also liked the guy who dressed Beyonce's work.
