The good news in all of this is that Disney has made commitments to better focus on diversity across ABC's lineup, and these changes are a strong hint that they are standing behind what they've promised to do. I applaud that part of it. But Tyra ... there are better choices!

Tyra was fine hosting her own model search show because she knew that business. She was not good on America's Got Talent. Has she even appeared on DWTS? I don't see her doing this job----or most anybody else as Tom is iconic.
If I had to guess the new host, Tyra would not have been on my radar. I also would have guessed Alfonso or one of the Disney kids whose name I can't recall.

I heard that Tom was getting 150k an episode and they decided to cut some of the "fat" from the show. I wasn't a regular viewer but I did enjoy him, and getting rid of him is a big mistake. I would rather see Carlton than Tyra as a host because while I like her she's more than a little messy and has a nasty tendency to make everything about her.

Whatever they were paying Tom, they're probably paying a lot more to Tyra as host AND as a producer. So now the idea that it was a cost-cutting move doesn't make as much sense...

That may or may not be true. What else has Tyra done in recent years? Whoopi Goldberg has said that when she first started at The View, she was not getting paid much (by her standards). She wasn't working, needed to get her face out there and wanted a place to speak her mind so she took the job. I'll admit I don't follow Tyra's career closely, so she may be doing a lot that I'm not aware of. But if she felt like her star was fading, she may have taken the gig at lower pay than she would have in the past with promises of pay increases if she proves to be a success.

I recall after her America's Next Top Model program ended, she did some studying at Harvard to help her entrepreneurial ventures and that included branding. I don't think she did a lot or had much success moving herself away from modeling, so this looks like yet another move that she was able to get herself involved with...time will tell if she can do it.

Tom is so well liked, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone pick him up rather quickly as a host. I have never liked Trya and there certainly were others more likeable than she if they wanted diversity. Couple her with probably the D-list stars and they have lost my interest. I think this is remove they will regret.

No Carlton, thankfully, Tyra Banks is the new host, as well as executive producer.
I've always liked Tyra, but host and producer..? That's ridiculous. Honestly, I never watched something she has been in or on.. save for when she was on Fresh Prince back in the day as Jackie I think her name was. I never watch ANTM or any of that so I can't really have an opinion of her in that respect. I do find it odd shes both EP and Host.. I can't see that as going well. I loved Tom, Erin not so much, but Tom was it for me on that show. I just see this all as another step in the downward direction.. sigh.

I just came to say DWTS has lost me. Tyra over Tom? And she is the exec producer? Nope nope nope. I have seen the comments on DWTS facebook posts and they are overwhelmingly negative about Tyra. Makes me sad because I love the show. Not anymore, Tom made the show for me.

I don't think she did a lot or had much success moving herself away from modeling, so this looks like yet another move that she was able to get herself involved with...time will tell if she can do it. Ah yes, the time she went to "Harvard Business School" She's been dining out on that for years. In reality, she attended a 9-week extension course over 3 years that costs over $30K per unit. No bachelor's degree OR grad school tests required. I remember reading an article at the time that compared her claims of attending Harvard Business School to attending a pottery class at night and claiming to be enrolled in art school. Ashley Judd and several other celebs have gone through that course as well.
I don't know Tyra, obviously, but especially toward the later seasons of ANTM, she really went off the rails. Acted like a real whackadoo. I can't think her being involved with DWTS is going to be anything other than a disaster. Where Tom was funny and quick, naturally, Tyra is over-the-top and rehearsed and not even in his league, intelligence-wise. She's not in the same league as Erin either, in that respect.
So, if they're giving the hosts the boot and many thing they might be re-thinking the judges, what are the odds that some of the pros aren't being shown the door too? We know that, in the past, they've dumped pros without a thought.
By the time they're done, the "new" DWTS might not look at all like the show we all love.
IMO, everything is SO different with what we're all dealing with - staying home, none of our regular TV shows, learning to do so many things in a different way. What people want is for some things to stay the same! I'd be thrilled, in the midst of all of this change, to have something familiar on TV. They blew it by completely changing the show - and we KNOW it will be very different.
I don't even know if I can even stomach hate-watching it.

I laughed at "dining out" on her Harvard experience. I remembered that she was there because her publicist must have had an in with the Boston papers as she was shown posing a lot with the Harvard landmarks as background.
Tom's wit was a huge part of the show. He was fast annd funny.

Well said! I think the biggest problem with Tyra as host is going to be that she's not very good at shining the spotlight on other people. Tom was outstanding as the host of this show because he's totally comfortable deflecting the spotlight to other people. With a show that has as many big personalities as this does - the judges who want attention, the pro dancers who want recognition, and of course the stars trying to make a comeback that want to be the focus of the show, they NEED a host who serves as ringmaster constantly telling the audience who to focus on - and making sure that the focus is never on the host. As a talk show host, Tyra was one who made all the conversations about her. On ANTM, she gave guidance by talking about herself and putting the focus on her. Tyra hogs the spotlight - she does not share and and she certainly does not deflect it! Tom was brillant on this show because he kept things running without being noticed. That's what the host of a variety show needs to be. Tyra does not have it in her. She's a solo artist - not an ensemble player and certainly not a conductor.

I have visions of her posing in exotic gowns while introducing a theme week - if they are still part of the NEW re-do.

Wow, DWTS is clearly moving in a different direction. I had stopped watching due to unsavory celebs as well as celebs that were completely unknown to me. That’s a bold move to make Tyra EP. The show did need to evolve, but these moves seem more like a remake. We shall see...

Totally agree with you MFW. Tom makes the show what it is! They’ll have to really pull a rabbit out of the hat to make that change ok ... and I don’t have a lot of confidence they will. Agreed. I didn't watch last season for reasons I stated in that thread. Now that they have announced who the replacement is, while I don't actually dislike her, I will no longer watch the show. Tom IS Dancing With the Stars! Foolish, foolish choice on ABC's part.

Post after post after negative post. Not sure what ABC was thinking.

They have probably already gone in a different direction and Carrie Ann has not yet been informed (Well, one can hope). I would not be disappointed if they brought on 3 new judges for the new direction they are taking, but, I am disappointed Tom will no longer be the Host. I watched the show as much for his wit as for the dancing. He was always calm and spoke from the heart, quick and very much in control of whatever situation. Tyra must realize that there will no retakes. She won't be able to edit live TV as she did with her Top Models show. I'm so disappointed, I probably won't be back.

I have no problem with Tyra, but DWTS is obviously going in a different direction. I'm curious if Erin will get a replacement or if Tyra will be expected to handle both jobs. I'm also curious as to what the contestants will be like. I'm afraid they will be a lot of "influencers" , a lot of "internet sensations" , and a lot of Disney kids , none of whom I've ever heard of or care to hear about in the least. These types aren't Stars. They're a bunch of entitled talentless air heads that got lucky temporarily. NOT what I want to see. There will probably also be a number of sports figures who I don't know either. At least they are kind of fun to watch to see if they have any dancing talent. Plus, they are usually appreciative to be there.

If they had to get rid of someone, why not the judges, and keep Tom? They're irritating at best, while Tom is great.

I have a feeling that ABC is going to be shocked at how much they underestimated Tom's popularity with DWTS fans. Sometimes, he was the only reason I tuned in. I'd suspect I'm not alone. I know other's didn't like Erin so much, but I did and I thought she was a perfect foil for Tom. That being said, it's TOM that made the show. DWTS without him is going to be a very different show. Wonder if the judges are next.... I'm betting that Disney is thinking viewers will have no where else to go in the Fall, so why not do a complete makeover on the show now. Sadly, with all the stuff that has come out over the years about Tyra's leadership at ANTM, she is nothing but baggage and really incapable of a polished live hosting performance. Disney is living in their own bubble these days, complete unaware of viewer sentiment between the coasts.

It just occurred to me that maybe the "new format" also means it will be a taped show instead of a 'live' reality show. Tyra would make more sense then, but unless they have a guest 'celebrity' that I absolutely love, (which is unlikely) I doubt I will watch.
