Anyone else use Amazon Now? I used to shop with Amazon Fresh a lot, but they discontinued it in my area. I order from Now a few times a month and I figure that comes out to about the same amount as paying for a Fresh subscription, since you tip the Now drivers. We now can get stuff from Amazon, a pet store (Pet Express, maybe?) and Whole Foods. We used to be able to get Sprouts, which I loved because there isn't one within about 30 minutes from me, but they discontinued that not long after they started offering WF. They do make mistakes from time to time and I've had some weird substitutions offered when the item I ordered was out of stock (yellow crookneck squash instead of butternut squash? Um....no), but it seems to be more reliable than some other services. I ordered from Amazon and Whole Foods last night and both orders came this morning. When I unpacked the second order, I realized I'd bought FIVE pounds of red poatatoes from both stores. eek2 I'm currently looking for potato recipes. This is why you don't do your online shopping at 2am. lol
Also, I ordered a bunch of bananas from the Amazon store. A "bunch" is usually five, maybe six. This morning it was SEVEN and they're all yellow. It's all bananas and potatoes at my house.

I keep thinking I'm going to try On Demand, but so far I've stuck with Vons (Safeway). Last week they didn't bring my Mocha Mix and I couldn't have cereal all week; which is just as well because Shredded Wheat and Bran has a ton of Potassium in it. They did bring the Mix this week along with the lower potassium plain Corn Flakes. And thank goodness for the Mix because the flakes taste like cardboard. faintthud

I have friends who think it's silly for me to order my groceries online, but I've found it actually saves me money. It's not about any physical limitation. I'm a terrible impulse shopper, so even if I only need a few things, I end up loading up the cart because I'm in the store and all that stuff is right there! If I shop online and can see that total the whole time, I make smarter choices. It's worth the occasional headaches when they deliver the wrong item and substitute something weird.
My last order from Whole Foods/Prime Now included the wrong flavor of coconut creamer. I like the regular, unflavored one, but they delivered the vanilla. The product picture shows old packaging with a different color carton. The plain used to be blue and now it's red. The vanilla is blue now. No one reads any more! At least they're quick to issue refunds on stuff like that.

I've discovered that Vons/Safeway also is quick to give a refund. It's not like the truck is going to come back and pick it up. Once in a while I catch it before the elevator arrives and it gets returned with him - but they do not like the paperwork.

Anyone else use Amazon Now? I don't use it for my regular grocery shopping, but I LOVE it for sending groceries to my away-at-college daughter. It is so unbelievably convenient. I used to send her packages (like an deconstructed Easter basket at Easter) but it was kind of expensive for something she doesn't really need. With Amazon now, I can be like, Happy Easter! Here's a 12-pack of vanilla Coke and a jumbo pack of toilet paper. It's super easy for me, and she gets treats mixed with useful items. I have friends who think it's silly for me to order my groceries online, but I've found it actually saves me money. It's not about any physical limitation. I do order groceries online for pickup sometimes, it helps a lot on busy weekends. The substitutions are hit or miss, but I've been surprisingly satisfied with the produce. I find that on average, I save $50 a week by ordering online. I tell myself that I don't impulse buy... but I obviously do!!!

I used to tell myself I didn't impulse buy, that I was great with faces AND names, all sorts of nonsense and then I got real about my limitations. I'm a terrible impulse shopper and while I'm great with faces, I will likely NOT remember your name!
My mom is coming to visit next week and my dad is without a drivers license (hopefully for not much longer), so unless he wants to walk to the grocery store ( ), he's going to have to rely on what's in the house already OR he can get takeout delivered. I told my mom that, if he really did find he needed a few things, we could order him an Amazon Now delivery from my place. I don't think that will happen, but at least they know it's an option. He just has to open his ears and listen for someone knocking!
I've tried Safeway before but their produce was always disappointing. Back then, at least, you paid a per charge for, say, potatoes vs. buying them by the pound. It seriously must have taken effort to choose potatoes as small as the ones I got. The greens were wilty, the broccoli about to go off....you get the idea. At least with delivery from Sprout's and now Whole Foods, the produce is very good and surprisingly reasonably priced. Not quite as reasonable as Trader Joe's, but I go there, that's $100 out the door! In some cases, I'd be thrilled if they DID come and pick up the product when it's the wrong thing, although I know that wouldn't happen. I'm sure it's more cost effective to just write off the money than pay someone to go back. Plus, if it's not shelf stable, there are issues with that too. I've actually given a few things away because I knew I would never eat them. Seems like a waste of money for them, but it's their choice to do business that way. They always text as the shopper is packing your order and, if something is out of stock, they ask if you want the suggested substitutions. They tell you to reply within a few minutes if you don't want them. One time, there were three or four suggested substitutions and I only wanted one, so I replied in like a minute or two. Ten minutes later I got a text that the substitutions have been made and the order is completed. They refunded me around $16 that day. I still got the food (some of which I gave to a neighbor) and they lost that much money. I was armed with texts and time stamps if they wanted to argue about it!

Not quite as reasonable as Trader Joe's, but I go there, that's $100 out the door! THIS is exactly what I was always afraid of about ordering online. I get a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables every week, and I'm pretty picky. Especially about broccoli and spinach. When those two are close to going I'd rather go without. But... except for once when I got some beat up peaches, everything has been good so far! It's a bit of a learning curve ordering produce online though. I once ordered two pounds of broccoli crowns, because that sounded right to me. I needed a lot. 2 pounds of broccoli is a whole lot of broccoli. I ended up freezing a bunch of it, and we still had broccoli almost every night that week. Then I needed some fresh jalapenos and I ordered the least amount I could. It said it would equate to about 3 or 4 peppers. NOPE. I ended up with over 30 jalapeno peppers. I didn't know what to do with them so they eventually went in the trash.

Lately there seems to be A LOT of food delivery options in the Chicagoland - Milwaukee area. Even many of our local small and large markets are offering delivery service now. My favorite one is Peapod ( www.peapod.com) which is like the perfect shopping experience. Really! Everything is 'top drawer' with Peapod. HUGE selection (and lots of healthy choices), competitive prices (with frequent sales), great produce and meat products, they're happy to take returns if a product doesn't come in perfect condition (I almost never have to return anything), and there's a 'no substitution' option. It's always a treat to order from Peapod. I love it.

On the theme of weird substitutions/mistakes.... I ordered two butternut squash from Whole Foods this week and got two little Delicata squash. This wasn't a substitution (I have my account set for no subs now), so someone actually thought those little yellow squash were butternut squash. It wasn't even a full pound in weight. To be that weight, the butternut squash would have had to be the size of avocados! I wish they'd hire people who are familiar with produce to do the shopping! I like Delicata, but that's not a straight swap for butternut in a recipe. Ordering from WF via Amazon Now is generally pretty good, in spite of the random weird errors. They're very quick to issue refunds too. In some cases, it's not a big deal and I don't care, but sometimes I do. The other week ago, I ordered a pound of blueberries, but got a pint instead, which ended up being just under 11 oz. For a lot of things, 6 oz isn't that much, but for blueberries, it's A LOT! For those concerned about the produce quality, I do find that the produce is usually very good and fresh. Sometimes they pick bananas that are RIPE, which means I'll only get to eat one before the brown spots come. That's a pretty minor complaint in the scheme of things. I get great berries for a good price - this week is was $2.55 for a pound of organic strawberries - and I got a cantaloupe for around $2.50 this week. The money I pay to tip the driver is still not enough to negate all the sale prices and having them delivered keeps me from spending money in their bakery if I go in person!
Any time Now makes an annoying mistake I think I'll try Instacart, but then I read reviews and realize they're probably a lot worse.

That is why I'm staying with Vons - no driver tipping. I don't have much cash on hand at any given time, so I would always be struggling with that. Oh, you mean the "tip" is included in the credit card charge? sigh - it is still a tip.

Doesn't Vons charge for delivery? Safeway does here and it's $9.95 if your total is over $150 and more if you don't.
With Amazon Now, delivery if free (you do pay the yearly Prime subscription, of course). All you pay is the tip, which is suggested and not mandatory. IMO, if someone brings my groceries to my house, I can stand to kick them a few bucks. It's usually between $5 and $8 for me, depending on the order total. You do have to put it on the order as they don't allow the drivers to accept cash tips. I think the tip is worth it considering the money I save on sales and NOT going in person and impulse buying....and the price of gas. It's usually around a gallon of gas taken up with grocery trips around town, so that's nearly half of the tip right there.
Even within the same company, the quality of services can vary. Vons home delivery may actually be pretty good, but Safeway home delivery here is disappointing. I've ordered from them maybe 3 or 4 times over the years they've offered the service - generally when I got an offer for free delivery - so I didn't just have one bad experience and write them off. It was more like several times over the last maybe 15 years (can't remember when they started the service).
I still miss Amazon Fresh. I'd totally pay the $14.95 for that service if they brought it back to my area. They had a better selection than Now.

That's delivery and I use the 4 hour window which is $6.35. There is no driver tip on top of that.
Hmm...I'll look closer at Amazon now. Thanks.

Maybe I'm just very picky, but having someone else pick out my produce, or anything at all perishable, is out of the question. I want my bananas small & green, my tomatoes firm, my avocados unripe (unless I need to use one the same day I buy it), my apples small, and the latest freshness date possible on anything with a date, especially dairy items. Grocery shopping has never been something I minded.
When I shop for myself I know I'm getting the latest dates & getting exactly what I want. Plus, paying for delivery of something I'm perfectly capable of stopping for myself is against the Cheapskate Code of Ethics.
However, this is being said smack dab in the middle of the Summer. When the temperature is -20 or worse, or there's a foot of snow out there with no respite in sight, delivery may start to look a bit interesting. Old fruit or not.

I don't mind grocery shopping either.....when my budget isn't so tight. Doing grocery delivery helps me stick to my budget and prevents impulse buying. There are things I don't buy for delivery - mainly veg that I would spiralize like zucchini or sweet potatoes, because that requires a specific size and/or shape - but that's a minor thing in the scheme of things.
Overall, I've been pleased with the produce I've ordered on Amazon Now, particularly from Whole Foods. Amazon tends to focus more prepacked foods and only has a small amount of fresh produce. I buy snacks and things like cat food, tea, cereal, etc. from the Amazon store on Now and then do WF through Now for everything else. WF has great sales every week too. Last week, I got lb containers of organic strawberries for $2.55 each and pint containers of organic blueberries for $3.99. Since I eat a lot of fresh fruit in the summer, that definitely makes it more affordable.

I seriously give up trying to predict what the Whole Foods/Amazon shoppers will do! I generally buy the same types of produce every week - kale, broccoli, sweet potatoes, peaches, etc. The last few times I've ordered sweet potatoes, they were puny. They brought those long thin ones that look more like carrots. A few of them were maybe 5 oz., that's how small they were. I had to use two of them for dinner. When I ordered for today, I ordered 5 of them, thinking that would give me more meals.
WELL, apparently the gargantuan sweet potato farm delivered to WF this week. The smallest one was around 13 oz. Three of them were over a pound and one was over a pound and a half! These things are HUGE. I can't believe they actually tried to cram them all in one flimsy little produce bag.
I'd been looking at a chicken and sweet potato stew recipe, so I guess I know what I'm eating this week!

Can you spiralize sweet potatoes?

Post by Critical on Sept 2, 2018 5:45:41 GMT
Oh, definitely. Unfortunately, these ones are so misshapen that I'd have to constantly re-center them to get it to work. The best shape is sort of a fat torpedo. You want it thick enough so that it touches the blades, but not so fat that it overshoots the blades on the sides. With the home delivery ones, I usually just chop them up and roast them. With these biggies, I'll chop them up and use them on stew. I found a good Moroccan stew recipe I'm probably going to try tomorrow.

I think Instacart has that option and maybe Amazon will add it. Still, the specifications for sweet potato shapes and sizes for spiralizing are fairly specific. I really wouldn't expect the shopper to stand there as long as I often do to find the right ones (and sometimes I don't find any that will work). While I do like roasted sweet potato noodles, I'm just as happy with them chopped. That option would be nice with something like bananas, so you could ask for them to bring partially ripe ones, rather than bright yellow ones. I once had Amazon bring me a bunch of EIGHT bananas (you buy by the bunch, not the unit - with WF, it's by unit) and they were all ripe. They set me up for failure!

I have a great Spiralized Sweet Potatoes & Raisins, with Walnuts recipe I like to make. Yummy & healthy. The thing is, I need those torpedo shaped sweet potatoes to properly spiralize them. As good as they do turn out, sweet potatoes are much harder than zucchini or even regular potatoes. They can be spiralized, but it's hard to do. By the time I have 1 done, my hands are quite tired & I'm sick of doing it. Plus I have to continually hold down the Spiralizer so it doesn't come loose. I have to contort myself into a truly awkward looking stance to do this. Basically, I need an extra hand. I usually try to buy a fairly long sweet potato as large as will fit, in order to do only 1. If I ever ordered them for delivery, I'd never get the size & shape I like. I'm picky, picky, picky when it comes to my produce. Size, shape & color have to be just right. Even if I could specify in comments, I'd probably drive the poor produce picker nuts. Obsessive/Compulsive grocery shopper, that's me.

Heads up for anyone who has Whole Foods as an option with their Prime Now delivery. They're running a special where, if you try out their pick-up service, you get a $10 credit on a future order.
Obviously, there needs to be a Whole Foods in your area that offers pick-up. There's one near me, so I tried it this week. It was so easy! I placed my order and picked a one hour window of time for pick-up. They actually texted me early to let me know my order was ready. I was out running errands, so when I finished up with my last one, I used the Now app to let WF know I was on the way (you turn on location services on your phone so they can see where you are). When I pulled into the lot and found the two spaces reserved for Prime Now pick up, there was a guy standing there waiting for me with my groceries. He asked me my name as confirmation and then loaded in my groceries and I was on my way in two minutes. Oh, and there was no additional fee or tip.
This isn't a service I'd use regularly, but it's something I'd consider and hey, if you want to give me $10 for trying it, I'm all on board! It's definitely a great option for people in a big hurry OR who have small children. A friend of mine cared for her good friend for several years as she was dying. At the end, she was classified as a hospice patient, so she couldn't be left home alone. This service would have been great for my friend because taking a weak but willful person with dementia AND an oxygen tank to the grocery store is a nightmare.
My $10 off code came today via email. It's for a future WF Now purchase, which works for me because that's usually how I buy my groceries if I have them delivered.

Because I'm a night owl, but generally need to be up in the morning to, you know, DO stuff, I schedule my grocery deliveries for the morning (between 8 and 10), so I'm forced to be up. You generally get a text notifying you that your order is completed and then another telling you your order is on the way and will arrive soon. Unfortunately, "soon" has different definitions for different people! Sometimes, that means the order just left the warehouse/store, both of which are 3-5 miles away. Sometimes, it means the driver is a mile way. Sometimes, like this morning, it means, the driver is in front of your house RIGHT NOW! Luckily, I don't have to sign anything, so I can peek out and ask them to set the bags on the table next to my front door so I grab them when they leave and no one has to see me half-dressed!

Vons (Safeway) is getting weirder. They've upended their website but I don't see that it is any friendlier. Plus I had a new driver this week and apparently he tried to call to say he was pulling up, but my phone sound is turned off. If I know to expect a call or text, I have the sound on. Anyway...knock on the door - guy in driver uniform without delivery saying he'd be right back with my order. Ten minutes later (grabbing my stuff, getting someone to open the outside door for him and waiting for an elevator...)he shows up with my groceries. When I got around to checking my phone I found two calls from him saying in the second that he would wait 10 minutes then drive off. As I said, new driver to my address. What I learned - keep your phone on when expecting delivery. HAH!
Plus I have the option to have them deliver at the doorstep or accept where they bring them in - I have to sign for them bringing them in. If they deliver to the doorstep, they would be gone, gone, gone.

First time I've read this thread and I cracked up over the last line of your post, Critical! This would have been a 5-star post for sure on our previous forum.
If it were me, I'd either make a lot of banana bread or take some bananas to work. At least there are a lot of things you can do with potatoes.
I wish I could have been a delivery driver because I love grocery shopping! But I applied with several companies and got rejected because of one traffic violation, which I plead no contest to rather than fight. I wish now I had fought it if I knew I was going to continue to be punished for it. Oh, well. I'm always willing to help friends out when they need something from the store.

Heads up for anyone who orders (or is thinking of ordering) from Whole Foods through Amazon Now. They have a deal going now where, if you order $10 or more from WF, you get a $10 credit to spend on Amazon on Prime Day. Got mine last night! I think you have to order before 7/13, but you can check the terms & conditions on the site

After a ridiculously bad experience ordering cat litter from Petco via Shipt (see the animal lovers thread) this past week, I had an excellent Shipt experience buying groceries from Target today. My delivery window was 4-5pm (I ordered around 2:30), and by 3:00, a shopper had claimed and started shopping my order. By 3:17 she was checking out and my groceries came around 3:30. Everything was packed perfectly. I had ordered two cantaloupe, which is always dicey - there's always a chance they'll be the size of baseballs and you pay the same price no matter the size - and they were HUGE. I also had nearly $16 in credit because of the Petco order. I'm going to cancel Shipt anyway (I can't justify the monthly fee for one Target order per month), but I wouldn't hesitate to get it again if I needed it.
I hate to generalize, but I'm always relieved when the shopper is a woman, especially with Target orders. I find that they are faster and do a better job. I still chuckle over the guy who was SO proud of himself for finding the pastry brush I ordered. Dude, the store website gives you the location of the item AND a picture. Don't get too excited

Don't get too excited I used Shipt through the Target website a few times and you’re right, the women always got the job done quicker than the men. Most of the men would just refund the item without searching for a replacement, in my experience. Hahah. After my trial there, I got hooked on Instacart at the start of the pandemic and I’ve been using it ever since. It has more variety for basically the same price a month. I remember once using Instacart on the same day for groceries at Aldi and random stuff at Costco (you get the Costco prices without the card through Instacart).

karna68 - You have a hard job! I can only imagine how demanding and rude people are to you. I'd guess you get blamed for things being out of stock, when it has nothing to do with you! Hopefully, there are more appreciative people than not. It was a toss-up between Shipt and Instacart when we signed up last year. I think it came down to price and the stores in my city and where my parents live. I also have a friend who used Shipt. I wouldn't hesitate to use either in the future. It's funny that right after I told my mom I'd canceled our Shipt membership (vs. right after I actually canceled it a few days earlier), there came the "please don't leave us" email They did include a code to get free shipping on an order (without re=upping my membership), so I think I'll probably do that. I was only using it for Target by the end, so one last Target order would be great. I'm not super worried about going out right now, but Target? Not so comfortable with that. I don't like going to Target when there isn't a pandemic going on! I'm just not a fan of crowds.
For now, I'm sticking with Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods (through Amazon). Obviously, the selection isn't what it is in the actual store, but I find that I don't really miss anything. I'd just be spending more money! I have the same breakfast (fruit and a cup of tea) and the same lunch (protein shake with various supplement powders), so it's just dinner and snacks that I need to buy for anyway. MUCH easier. If I shopped in-store, I'd end up with a bunch of stuff I don't actually need.
panikmoon - I'm glad I'm not the only one who experienced that phenomenon! I do think it's funny most of the time, except when the guy is just clearly lazy. I have my account marked "contact me so I can choose" with substitutions, so when they ignore that and just don't bother to contact me, I let the tip express my feelings. I usually send off a feedback email too. I also do send feedback for great shoppers and tip accordingly.
I do still get a chuckle out the shopper who was SO proud of himself over finding the pastry brush at Target As if that's a very strange, obscure thing. OTOH, one guy missed the 4-pack of Kleenex in his trunk when he delivered my order and came back hours later to bring it to me. I made sure to give him good feedback. He's shopped for me several times since then and he does do a good job. Still, I find that women are generally faster at Target. This last woman was a rock star. I can't believe she got in and out in less than twenty minutes. It was a big order!
