I have seen the genealogist who wears the bow tie before. I have too, I thought it may have been Genealogy Roadshow but that's not it. Maybe he is one of the Pro-genealogists used in Long Lost Family?

I loved this show when it was on Network TV. I wish it still was.

If anyone's interested, another YouTube channel now has the UK and AUS series episodes available. Search for the channel "Airon the Pogi" I'm watching Boy George's episode from the current UK season right now.

Okay, anyone who's a fan of this show OR of Olivia Colman needs to go to that YouTube channel I mentioned (or just search YouTube for her episode) and watch her episode NOW! It's hands down one of the best episodes I've seen, not just because I love her, but because of the scope of it and what she learned and where she traveled. I also watched Charles Dance's episode last night and it was very good as well.
That channel also has a bunch of the Australian episodes, so I dove into those as well. I've watched Jackie Weaver, Paul Mercurio, Rachel Griffiths and Toni Collette. Looking forward to Peter Garrett, Geoffey Rush and David Wenham.
IMO, the non American episodes are better than the ones for the US series.

One of the very best episodes was that of Julie Chen. It was like watching a mystery story with a surprising ending. What she found out about her grandfather was REALLY eye-popping! Plus, Julie went to China and met a whole side of her family that she never had interacted with before. Excellent episode. My favorite of the whole series. Here's the full episode on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxf69S3-GQM

I enjoyed Julie Chen's episode, but IMO, none of the best US episodes are even close to the best UK ones.
Hugh Quarshie's episode on the UK series is another one that is just incredible. I didn't even know who he was and almost didn't watch, but it became one of my favorites.

For fans of DWTS, the UK version of WDYTYA just featured Shirley Ballas. You can watch it on the YouTube channel I mentioned upthread. She made some REALLY interesting and unexpected discoveries.

You're welcome! That YouTube channel has a ton of the UK and AUS episodes. If you haven't watched any of them, here are lists: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Do_You_Think_You_Are%3F_(UK_TV_series)en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Do_You_Think_You_Are%3F_(Australian_TV_series)I loved Olivia Colman and Alex Kingston. Also David Tennant because he's adorable. SO MANY good ones on the UK and AUS versions and lots of seasons to dive into. They'll keep you busy for a while! Alas, I haven't been able to find any of the Canadian series episodes on YouTube. They only did one season, but there are a few I'd like to watch. The season aired over 10 years ago, so those episodes are probably hard to come by.

So I started watching the David Tennant episode and decided mid-show to go look at my own Scottish ancestry. Several hours later, I'm re-emerging with a newfound appreciation for that side of my family. Assuming that the amateur Mormon genealogists who have researched that line did it correctly, I'm descended from chiefs of Clan Mackintosh and the Mackintosh of Borlum branch. which was founded by an ancestor. Brigadier William Mackintosh (also a Mackintosh of Borlum and one of the main leaders of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715) was the brother of my ancestor. I'm guessing that one of the reasons they were loyal to the Stuarts (or Stewarts; I never know which is correct) is that they had Stuart ancestors, being descended from James I and Joan Beaufort, who was a Plantagenet (great-granddaughter of Edward III). And so on and so forth. I just kept going down the rabbit hole, ending up at Charlemagne and beyond. Now I want to go on Genealogy Roadshow and find out if this is really true. (I know. It's not on anymore, but a girl can dream.) OK. Back to David Tennant!

Welcome to my world! Been there, done that! I still have to go back and watch some episodes I missed. It's fun to watch episodes with people I don't even know. I've still never seen High Quarshie act in anything, but his episode is one of my favorites. Back maybe ten years ago, there was a YouTube channel that was uploading all of the UK episodes and then it was gone. I was so excited to find that new one. I'd been watching a few of them where I could find them online, but I love being able to watch them on YouTube on my TV instead of on my laptop.
A few years ago, they were throwing in a UK one every once in a while on the US version, and Minnie Driver's was on that season. For some strange reason, though, it wasn't on the streaming version of the season, so I was thrilled to see it availale on YouTube. I don't remember if it was on his page or someone else's but it was pretty interesting. Miss_Griss, I thought I'd move our discussion over here! IIRC, Minnie Driver's episode was aired in place of the one for Lauren Graham, which was announced and then never aired. They never even said WHY we never saw a LG episode. There have been several celebs who were asked to participate in the UK series, but then the researchers didn't find anything (or anything interesting), so they didn't move forward. BUT, they do usually release a statement to that effect. Weird that they never said a thing about LG, nor did she. If I ever meet her, I'm totally asking about it!
I think Rob Lowe said that his episode was supposed to air in an earlier season than it did, but it took the researchers longer than expected to find what they needed to find, so they delayed his episode.
The Kim Cattrall episode was for the UK series too. So was Jerry Springer, although I don't think they aired that one in the US. His episode was surprisingly emotional. I say "surprisingly" because of what his show is like.

I was glad you brought the conversation back over here, because I don't think I'd realized I'd moved to a different thread in the first place. I just finished watching the Olivia Colman episode, and I am so in love with her! Her family story was fascinating, but equally wonderful were her reactions to all of the individual stories. She was so genuinely interested in and excited by the things her ancestors experienced.

I may have to go back and watch the parts in Scotland again with fresh eyes to get a better idea of the historic bits. Thanks for reminding me that it's during the Jacobite rebellion period.

Soooo happy to meet another Outlander fan! And I agree with you about the violent parts. The first time I watched the series I fast-forwarded through (or completely skipped over) the violent parts, cause they were too painful for me too. But yes, the first 3 seasons are ALL about the Jacobite rebellion in the 1700s, and even the 1940s era scenes deal with the 1700s era of Scottish history as well. So enjoy, and let us know how you like it, when watching it with fresh eyes! (If there isn't an Outlander thread here at nuFORT, we'll have to create one, especially around November 4, 2018 when Outlander's season 4 starts!!! (I can't wait!!! )

I just saw that the actor who plays Captain Jack Randall is going to be Prince Phillip in The Crown. I hope I can separate him mentally from that other unlikable character.

Actually I don't like EITHER Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) or Prince Philip, at all. The only thing that I sort of like, is that in real life, Prince Philip is not a very sympathetic character either. And from what I've read, that's putting it mildly. So it doesn't bother me quite as much as it could, that Prince Philip is being played by someone else whom I don't care for.

I didn't even know who he was and almost didn't watch, but it became one of my favorites. I watched Hugh Quarshie's episode last night, and it was very interesting. I watched his episode and Olivia Colman's close together, and they painted quite a robust picture about the Europeans who went to various colonized areas, married local women, and had families with them. It was sometimes heartbreaking to see how things worked out and sometimes very touching and encouraging.

I was a fan of Olivia Colman's acting before I watched her episode, but after I watched it, I sort of fell in love with her. Like I want to meet her and be her bff and hang out and have tea. She was just so lovely and normal and unaffected. I felt like that about Alfre Woodard too. She's like a nice warm hug. I'd be sad to find out she's a horrid person IRL.
I find that it's more the case with the British and Australians on this show vs. the Americans that they seem more like real people. So many of the US stars look like MOVIE STARS. I remember thinking during the the Tony Goldwyn episode that he looked like a superior being next to so many of the researchers and historians he met in the episode. He was just so beautiful and perfect looking. If you haven't watched it yet, I definitely DO NOT recommend the Jeremy Irons episode. I've always enjoyed him as an actor, but on his episode, he came off as a pompous, self-involved ass. It was really disappointing. I loved Alex Kingston's episode. She is so fabulous and one of the things she found out was a bit salacious, which she loved. She's one of my girl crushes for sure....along with now, Olivia Colman!
I really enjoyed the AUS one for Peter Garrett, the lead singer of Midnight Oil, one of my favorite bands from hs. He's always been very politically minded (he was actually a member of the House of Representatives for a time) and socially/environmentally conscious and what he learned about his family was SO fitting. I've always been a fan and the episode just confirmed how I felt about him. Just a really cool guy.
If you ever watched Absolutely Fabulous, Julia Sawalha's episode was really neat too.
There really were very few of the UK series that I haven't enjoyed. IMO, they're better than the US series, in part because they just have longer episodes, so you have more time. Plus, I like the extra historical info they give.

Thanks for the other recommendations. I'll have to check them out.

This was done by a genealogist for my grandmother to trace my grandfather's line. There are also the Adams of Massachusetts involved (I think the 7th son, not the famous ones) and they came from Wales, so it said. Anyway, since I no longer have access to the scroll (I gave it to my cousin's daughter) I should get on Ancestry and verify it.
