I like BE. It’s the kind of show that lets me see cool houses, pretty gardens, and peculiar home owners. The owners of the company have a good rapport most of the time. I’m sorry that the young woman owner had a cancer setback. I hope she has a full recovery and long healthy life.

I am learning more and more about different bushes/trees and plants.....I am not big into statues in my backyard etc but the flowering plants and the different bushes/trees I love. Also, MEL, geez, I am so worried about her.

Bravo marathoned season 1 of BE before the premiere of season 2, so I just happened to catch that.
While I like a landscaping/garden show I do find their prices rather high.
James ego is a bit much. I feel he set prices per his ego.

What ticks me off a bit is that the client will quote a budget of $40,000 to $50,000 and Jame will always say it will cost you $50896 and they pay. Half the plants they provide are annuals that will die anyway. Last week they put in a pergola, bought them furniture, put in a grill, and added a ivy screen for what I thought was 3 times the going rate. For the amount of work that was really accomplished I thought they gouged the client.

I do not need MANSCAPERS or any landscaper buying me a grill....you know. Stick to the GREENS. PERIOD. Like the MOVIE SCREEN....no way....my kids would not need an OUTDOOR MOVIE SCREEN. ESP because this home is on the East Coast and they have grueling winters and its virtually USELESS from cold October eves until after rainy Springtime. I do love when they discuss the greens....I want to learn more about plants and bushes. I did like the BUTTERFLY part of the backyard but I would NOT buy those costly white "pods". I bet I could have done that backyard MY WAY and looked amazing for under $1,000.00. Seriously. Like you said, VIC & JAY paid MANSCAPERS for the new DECK and all the FURNITURE. Costly. EDIT: I am so happy MEL appears to be CANCER FREE. Phew. She does seem to have more testing needed but all in all good news for her.

EDIT: I am so happy MEL appears to be CANCER FREE. Phew. She does seem to have more testing needed but all in all good news for her. Is it worth it to pay a designer for a landscape design? Yes, most nurseries provide design services as well as crews do do the landscaping. You would have to contact a landscaper who specialized in hardscape to get stone patios, walls, fountains and the such done. For a Pergola I would just ask my contractor if he could do it or if he had a recommendation. Plants can be expensive and again depends on the nursery. I go to two that are within two miles of each other. One is a discount place I would get the basics and if I needed any exotic species I go to the other place and pay those prices. It is very easy to spend $300 to $400 on annuals for spring planting. I gave up on that when Bambi and Thumper became regular visitors and ate everything a week after I planted everything. Realistically how expensive is a flat deck 15 x 30 feet? Even if it was $10,000 plus a firepit which would be aroun $2500 to $3000 plus installation, and lets say another $10,000 for all of the furniture. That's $25,000. So the homeowners spent over $33,000 on plants? That is ridiculous. Outside of the ridiculous pricing for at times very limited work I enjoy the show.

I only watched the first show so far and enjoyed it. Although it is another reality show, it is educational in that we learn the do's and don'ts of plant selection, size, positioning, etc. However, as I was watching I wondered how feasible it was to spend so much money on plants which undoubtedly will not survive a severe winter. I'm in Southern California so almost everything planted will survive from year to year, with rare exception. If I lived in a cold climate, it would seem to make more sense to purchase hardy type plants and shrubs that will not need replacing quickly.
I was flabbergasted at the total cost of the first show's landscaping cost. Undoubtedly the cost was absorbed by the show but, in real life, I would do that in increments and spread out the investment. Also, in a cold climate the family most likely would get less than half a year's usage out of it.

Watching this week's episode where James only wants to do large event installations and not residential. Taped pre-Covid. Boy was he off-base with his business plan.

James annoys the heck out of me.
This is the episode with Mel's friend Nayla who wants the minimalist backyard, an extension of her living room. James is talking to Mel and Garret how he doesn't want to do the dirty work of planting anymore and he accuses Mel of yelling at him. Not once did Mel raise her voice, in fact she was very respect of him. He is a total jerk.
James also complained about wanting to look good as he represents the face of the company and how he gained 35 lbs. Dude seriously you need to lose about 100lbs you are obese lie to your customers but not to yourself.

You're right, he's very annoying At this point I am watching as there is so little on HGTV and the regular cable channels, I will have to honestly revisit the streaming channels. James is so whinny and it is obvious he wants to transition the company in a different direction but he is being so immature and unprofessional about it. Mel and Garret are not the enemies. However James is so into image yet I think there is a tad of jealously toward Mel and Garret as physically they are in great shape, they represent what James wants to be but is not. The drama makes me want to not watch.

OMG JAMES.........just go AWAY already. If you don't like being a part of MANSCAPES then LEAVE. Go find another job. But your annoying whining every episode is getting soooooo OLD. I will say I loved everything they did with NAYLA's BACKYARD. For some unknown reason the MANSCAPES actually made the backyard look BIGGER. WOOT WOOT!!!

They create beautiful Spring/Summer landscapes. But, I have all of those plants in my yard and in the Fall/Winter they will all be sticks and won't be the screen plants that they were as planted. They need to buy James out and let him move to California to be among the even more beautiful people whom he will hate.

What really pisses me off is that the clients have budgets and James consistently always goes over budget. In episode 7 the clients say their budget is $70,000 which is a lot of money and James says it can be done for $76,000+. Dude a budget is a budget stick to it.
Seriously clients get multiple quotes.
It's as if James does it on purpose to gouge the client.

Yeah, the season finale of Backyard Envy is this week and NO MORE JAMES on my TV. CAN'T WAIT.
I was watching Renovation Inc on HGTV this weekend and the redid a couples backyard for about $43,000 and that was in Canadian dollars. They took out the old stone patio, fixed the water leaking into the basement. Installed a beautiful stone paver patio, with a retaining wall that doubles as seating. Installed another patio on the lower lever. Put in a soft-crete compound around the pool and landscaped and it looked fabulous. The steps from the house to the upper patio and the steps down to the lower patio were solid live edge stone. So yeah I totally think Manscappers is way over priced for what they deliver.

I can't think of his name but I've seen the guy on Renovation, Inc before. I think he ran around Georgia expanding people's houses. I really liked that series. I'll need to put Renovation, Inc. on my DVR.
Oh, I see his name is Bryan, I was thinking Chip. Not the same guy, I guess.
What day did you watch it? I can't find it on my schedule guide.
Found it - Saturday at 10 PM

I wonder if the Manscapers prices are so high due to the fact they are New York prices. Everything in that area, goods and labor, are so much more expensive than in other parts of the country. I do agree with others that a family could save quite a bit of money purchasing outdoor furniture and accessories on their own.

Season 2 Episode 8 - season finale
Fire Island client- client had a budget of $20,000 to $25,000 so of course James quoted $30,000 for the job. So they bought furniture for the top deck and the pool area. Lots of pots and mostly perennials. Bought a cedar path which is not expensive, some rocks and some mulch. Various pines and grasses for a small front yard. OK they transported it across the bay and walked it up the path ways and planted it. The client told them they could stay at the house while they worked. I still think it was vastly overpriced.
The conclusion was that everyone was OK with James going out to LA to open a branch of Manscapers to help them get year round work. Really all that drama for this. James was an utter butthole through the entire season. Blames everyone but himself for everything. So immature. Garrett added his own butholeness with him getting upset with Johnny cooling himself off in the pool because Mel told him to.
