Watched the season premiere of Lovecraft Country and it is INSANE, a must-watch! It is terrifying, complex, and downright good! I had to watch something light and simple after that first episode. Whew, the forest! Glad there’s just 8 episodes, so we get the full-bodied story.

Lovecraft Country is insanely good, even though some parts are extremely hard to watch. Judging by what my grandmother used to say happened in the South in the 50s it's pretty accurate too. Love the soundtrack, Junie Smollett, Courtney Vance and the actor that plays Atticus. I'm glad it's shot anthology style with each episode being a "story" because I was very upset when I thought a certain actor had died, only to see him alive this week, lol. They also shot the Chicago scenes in my neighborhood, which was nice to see.

I think this show deserves its own thread! HBO is really hitting it out of the park lately. The Outsider, Watchmen and now Lovecraft Country.
I know there are some posts about the show in at least one other thread, so I'll pull them over (they might appear above this one because they predate this post, so if it looks weird, that's why). As posters here and reviewers have mentioned, the scariest creatures on this show aren't the actual monsters. I'm always happy when something "scary" shows up to take out the dirty racists The cast is SO excellent. I think Jurnee Smollett was born for the style of this era. The hair, the makeup, the clothing. She looks amazing. This last episode should be her Emmy submission. She was just SO good.
Did anyone catch Bobo/Emmett Till playing with the Ouija board? Took my breath away

I pulled my husband into watching it with me. Ha! We almost watched tonight's ep last night when we realized, hey, they released the episode online before it's airtime. I know it happens on some shows, just wasnt expecting it.

This show just continues to break the mold every single week! This Hippolyta-centered episode was pure sci-fi and I loved every minute. Tic has the book in the final scene...where is he???
Also side note: William is played by the actor who portrays Ubbe on Vikings!
On to next week’s adventure.

Re: last week's episode: I've known who Jamie Chung is for a long time and I've liked her work, but I had NO idea she was capable of THAT. Normally, when a series throws in an episode that seems outside of the regular plot lines and barely features any regular cast members, I get annoyed. I got over that pretty quickly because that episode was incredible. If Jamie Chung doesn't get an Emmy nod for that, I don't know who deserves it more. She was magnetic.
I loved seeing Hippolyta for a whole episode this week! So fun to see straight space-themed sci-fi this week! I'm so sad that we only get a few more episodes this season.
I read an article that pointed out that the author of that copy of Lovecraft Country is George Freeman (Tic's uncle) and not Matt Ruff.
I kept yelling at Tic to throw that dead cop's body through the "rift" - don't leave evidence!

Lol I was actually thinking the same thing about tossing in the cop. So, now I'm wondering if Hypolita is stuck?

I finally watched the last two episodes and I am still not okay. After episode 8, I had to take a little break. As soon as I saw Bobo/Emmett Till in episode 3, I knew what was coming. The fact that we got to know him a little bit before his murder, which is basically what we know about him, it was even harder to watch. I literally read Tim Madigan's The Burning about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, so seeing it depicted in episode 9 was jarring. I knew about the various people Montrose talked about. While that book is very detailed, seeing it depicted on screen made it even more horrifying. It made me realize I should go back and watch the Watchmen episode with the riots as well.
Those little "girls" tormenting Diana? OMG. They were the most terrifying monsters the whole season. Forget those little girls in The Shining.
The season finale was just excellent. Everything I hoped for. NOW what I'm hoping for is an announcement that the show's been renewed for a second season where we'll find that Tic is alive and well!
I just started reading the book, btw, and even knowing how certain scenes turn out (that first terrifying moment with the evil cops before the shoggoths appear), I'm still on the edge of my seat!

If this show doesnt clean up at the awards next year, I would be very surprised. It needs to come back.
Also re: the Emmett scenes hurt to watch. I didn't understand it at first and then it hit me. 😢

I didn't understand it at first and then it hit me. 😢 I know, I can't imagine it won't be given some Emmy (and Golden Globe) love. I really do hope they renew, but I also hope they find a way to bring back Tic. I mean, it's a show about magic, so there's got to be a way. Without Jonathan Majors, I just don't think the show would be as good.
Right before the character first appeared, I'd read something about Emmett Till where his nickname was mentioned, so when they called that boy Bobo, I went, "Oh no." I waited nearly a whole week to watch that episode. I had to prepare myself emotionally. As hard as that and so many other events in the show, I'm so glad they didn't shy away from showing them. During the Tulsa episode, I found myself feeling short of breath and sick to my stomach.
I just finished the book yesterday and it was excellent. There were enough differences between the book and the show that it didn't feel like reading a script. In the book, Diana is a boy and he's chased by a demonic doll. When I saw the heading for that chapter, I was reading on my Kindle in bed in the dark. I immediately stopped reading and saved it for the next day!

There is a behind the scenes special on HBO for this series. They delve into the different sets & worlds, and even share how the shoggoths are created. I mentally replay the shoggoth erupting from the ground to protect Tic when I have tough encounters in real life. It’s a quite effective tool!

I mentally replay the shoggoth erupting from the ground to protect Tic when I have tough encounters in real life. It’s a quite effective tool! Thanks for the heads up! I'm also planning on listening to the podcast, but I think I want to listen to each podcast before I watch the episode a second time. There's SO much happening in each episode that I know hearing more about it before I watch will make it richer.
So, I posted the other day about reading the book, which I borrowed as an ebook from the library. I waited at least a month for it, probably more. Then yesterday, while I was searching my shelves, I found a freaking galley of it that I got from the publisher FIVE years ago! Good grief.

I'm still catching up. Just finished the "I Am" episode and have to admit that it was the most inspiring thing I've seen on TV in a while. It really hit me in the feels.
