Lately I've gotten into the cozy mystery book genre, since I already love it in TV shows. This show was like a cozy mystery mixed with a baking competition, and I really enjoyed the first episode, from the bakers trying to figure out what the mystery dessert is and then bake it, to the judges revealing the key clues afterwards. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to the next episode.

I thought this was pretty fun, too. The almonds threw me off on the first dessert but I guessed the second one. Props to whoever came up with an actual original idea for a show!

When I read the description just before the showed aired last night, I thought . . . "This looks and sounds really stupid." So, of course, I turned it on.
Loved it!!!

The first one was easy last night - cannolis - yet that one guy was SO sure it was donuts. And he was SO wrong. The second one was a little harder but the kirsch should have given it away. It certainly wasn't a yellow layer cake like that one team made, nor a coconut cake (or whatever that mess was) that donut guy made. And now I really, really want a Black Forest cake. Might have to bake this weekend...

It felt like a case of that guy bending his opinions of the clues to fit what HE wanted to make - donuts in the first part and the tropical cake in the second.
I was impressed by everyone else seeing that the coconut and condensed milk packages were not open, and deducing that it meant that those were NOT ingredients in the bake.

I'm happy I correctly guessed the two desserts in episode 2 from the clues before the bakers could. Really liking the varied teams.
The mother/daughter duo that bickered got extremely lucky that they got cannoli right in round one, they came across like they don't have the general baking knowledge to compete here. The eliminated team were a disaster, the guy simply was completely clueless on how to read the actual clues in the kitchen, and while the girl knew it had to be cannoli in round 1, she just rolled over too easily and let the guy take the lead, then she just completely got as clueless as him in round two.
I'm very curious just how much more difficult future episodes will get, not just in terms of the desserts but also in terms of the clues.

The show is cute and a little different than most of the competition shows......but I really, really do not like Joel....His sarcasm just does not fit this show, especially when you compare him to Paula Deen's son or Clinton Kelly.

I'm not sad about the team that was sent home, they were a mess and didn't pay attention to the clues at ALL. The first dessert was easy to guess but I had no idea what a Princess cake was, so all I could guess was cake with whipped cream and raspberries on the second one.

A Princess Torte was a technical challenge on British Baking Show, I think season 2. They also featured a mini-version on Best Baker in America either 1 or 2. I also saw photos from one of the BBS contestant's wedding and one of her baking guests (Nancy - who won that season) made one which sat prominently on the cake table.
I hadn't heard of them since BBS, but they look very complicated to get just right.

I'm a big fan of Great British Bake-Off. As soon as they talked about fondant, whipped cream, etc., I knew it was a Princess cake!!!!
Arrogant "I'm not used to being in second place" son can pack up his mother and leave any time.

I really liked the twist in the first round, by making it like a fusion on two desserts. The teams that went with a lemon meringue tart made the mistake of not only ignoring the pate a choux and the markings on the parchment paper and focusing too much on the tart pan, but mainly made the mistake of forgetting the very first clue; even before they went into the kitchen, Cheryl informed them that the dessert was a "twist on a classic", so trying to do a tart means they ignored the twist they were warned about. Personally, I found it very easy to figure out by the clues.
Round two started out as difficult with those clues, and even I pondered Victoria sandwich just like the losing team did, but as soon as I saw marzipan, I knew it had to be princess cake, which I also learned about thanks to the Great British Bake-Off. Luis & Natalie have really figured the game out, which is follow the clues and "recreate" the dessert, and not "give your interpretation of it".
And totally agreed with AZChristian, that Thomas guy got on my bad side last night. He's goood at reading the clues, but he's gotten quite arrogant and it's really off-putting. By contrast, I like his mom a lot, she's down-to-earth and is clearly having a lot of fun even just participating in the show, and I especially liked how she went to compete in the show immediately after retiring, gave me a good laugh when she said "what are they going to do? Fire me?". Really makes me wish she'd smack some humility into her son.

I hadn't heard of this show coming up before the first episode but I'm finding it very interesting, even though I'm absolutely NOT a cook by any means! It's just a novel twist instead of the plain old reality show.
The mother/daughter team (one of them is Rebecca, I think): I'm really hating on the daughter! She's rude to her mom, cutting her off and squashing what she has to say. Plus, this evening, they decided to each have 2 minutes to speak and get their ideas without the other interrupting. But while mom was talking, the daughter did something (I can't remember); she didn't SAY anything, but distracted. Then, while the mom was mid-sentence daughter reached up and played with mom's bangs. It was just weird! I would totally not be unhappy to see the daughter go home and mom to stay, LOL!

Rebecca and Jean were funny in a way, they made me chuckle a lot, but it's plain as day that they lacked a lot of baking knowledge and they were way out of their depth. I guess the one good thing is that, even though they got both the desserts wrong here, the ones they did make were well prepared and delicious, unlike their mishaps from their first episode.
I got worried over Shania when she got injured, twice at that. That's what I hate about croquembouches, the risk of caramel burns. I'm glad she was able to bounce back, and hopefully her knee is back to normal by the next episode.
Tonight's second dessert was incredibly easy to figure out, but the first was a bit tricky, but ultimately, I managed to guess it right. My biggest eureka moment, the moment that made me go "I knew it!", was when I said to myself that if there's a potlock list with names in it, and for some reason there's an empty take-out coffee cup on the counter, tha they should see if the name of the cup matches any from the potluck list. It felt so good to know I was right, and I just had to laugh that the bakers had the dessert literally spelled out for them in writing and nobody notices it.

I got the second dessert but didn't think cheesecake for the first round - but I knew it wasn't a damn tart. I can't believe nobody looked at the name on the cup! Rebecca and Jean were so totally clueless it was funny.

As soon as they said sour cream and cream cheese, I said, "cheesecake"!!!! (And I am NOT a baker, I just love a good cheesecake.)
This show makes me smile.
ETA: SHAME on Curtis Stone for not knowing how to pronounce "genoise" (or was it "dacquoise" - same issue). I took one year of high school French (before Curtis Stone was even born), and I know that if a French word ends with a vowel, you pronounce the "s"; if it ends with an "s," you don't pronounce it.
He pronounced it as ending with "wah"; it's supposed to be "wahz."
I know . . . it's a bit nitpicky, but he's a world-renowned chef, and he's teaching future chefs how to pronounce a baking term incorrectly.

I pretty much like all the contestants left, which makes it fun to watch. You get to root for everyone, LOL!
Those desserts in the first round were really complicated! And the one that was revealed to be the "goal" dessert was RIDICULOUS!! So many adjectives! And the showcase piece might have even had MORE descriptives, LOL!

They have two teams. She's on the other team. After next week's elimination of a pair from the second team, they will combine the final four teams for the quarter-finals, etc.

Well, that gives her a little more time to recover. I hope she's able to continue; it would really suck to have to leave the competition for something so silly!

Should be interesting when the three teams left from last night merge with the three teams left from the other group.
I wasn't able to watch last night, many many errands, so I left the show recording. Unfortunately, my sister did something dumb and cut out the recording shortly after the teams inspected the second round's crime scene kitchen, so I wasn't able to see the baking, judging or reveal. My guess was a ginger cake (due to the molasses and spices) with a gingerbread house as a topper. I have no clue who got eliminated nor who won.
Round 1 was very fun, though, and I managed to guess the dessert once again. It was the towel with crumbs that was the key clue for me to know it would be a rolled cake, and I'm surprised nobody got the strawberry design imprint, but it was the cocoa powder being expire by so many years that got a big laugh out of me, that was awesome. Kelly was delightful as the guest judge, too, I really liked how complimentary she was to the bakers and how happy she was at getting to take home the mystery dessert; she clearly had a fun time being there.

rembrant, do you have Hulu? If so, you can watch it there. If not, I'm happy to tell you who "won" and who went home. (Won is in quotes because no one got it exactly right, so there wasn't an overall winner.) P.S. I'm really enjoying this show!

Sadly, I don't have Hulu. My brother's ex-wife had it, but it would be so uncouth to ask her to let me access it. Tubi (which I use often) is putting it up, but they're rather behind, as this week they added episode 3, whereas this recent one was the fifth episode. What makes me mad is that I'm enjoying the show so much that I wanted the full season recorded to watch it any time I liked, but now thanks to my sister, I can't. Feels like if someone ripped out several pages out of a great book.

@rembrandt, that's so sad that you won't have a complete set of recordings.
As for who went home, etc. You were correct about the type of cake and the house on top. It was a two-tiered cake, and the gingerbread house was supposed to match the picture on the fridge where the house was decorated in orange royal icing with a pair of skis leaning against it and Santa Claus standing there (I think). There were also supposed to be some Christmas tree cookies decorating the sides of one of the layers.
The team from Las Vegas, who has won the last few times, guessed the gingerbread cake but missed the clues on the fridge and somehow decided the theme was Christmas in July, so they did the gingerbread house part wrong. But they were safe, because they were one of the two teams that got the most things right.
The other safe team was the mother and son. They had the wrong kind of cake (it was white and flavored with a spiced simple syrup), but they came closest on the decorating part, even though it looked really sloppy because they had trouble with the royal icing not setting and the house falling apart, which put them behind, so they didn't finish everything on the decorating.
The other two teams made more serious mistakes. The army women who won the first round got the template for the gingerbread house as their clue, but they hadn't seen how the gingerbread pieces were supposed to be used, so they put them all over the cake to create a village, instead of making a single house. I don't remember whether they had the right kind of cake or not.
The other team, the a man and woman who are friends and have kept making poor choices, got the gingerbread cake part right but they thought it was only a single tier cake and their decorations kind of sucked. They did get right which of the houses it was supposed to be, but it was just really sloppy.
Because it was so close between the two of them as far as who did the worst job, the women who won the first round stayed, and the other team went home. (Wish I could remember names. I hope that made sense.)

I guessed apple pie for the first one and totally blew it, but the second one was pretty easy to get - red/white/blue velvet cake with a Liberty Bell on top. I didn't understand why the girls were eliminated, I thought they got all the elements correct?
The fact that there are people who don't know that France gave us the Statue of Liberty makes me sad.

How can you have any kind of baking experience and use the wrong apples for a pie so that you have apple soup?
How can you have any kind of baking experience and not know that the dough cutter is for an open weave pie top???
