I really like the young women from New York and was sad to see then go home, especially when I think they've done a better job overall then the apple pie soup guys. It was too bad that they botched things so badly on the cake with having so many layers and the wrong size on the top ones. What was with the clue that the first round winners got that said that the topper could be either the Liberty Bell or the Statue of Liberty when everyone knows the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France? It was wrong, but based on that, the husband wife team should have won if the show runners thought the Statue of Liberty was an acceptable topper. So bizarre!

The first round confused me. The pastry cutter was one thing, but then the cinnamon being used to, that indicated to apples. So, that was pretty contradictory there.
Second round was very easy to guess, though, but I'm so bummed Shania & Hope went home, I thought they'd go much further. Also confused on how they went home. I know they judge both rounds if they must, and in this case, both they and Cory & Donte guessed both desserts wrong in the two rounds, but taking both rounds into account, I don't see how Shania & Hope's many layers in their round two cake (I still don't understand how they interpreted the cake pans as having so many layers) was worse than the apple soup that Cory & Donte served on the first round.

I'm not a big baker, but I do enjoy when one person on a team is just POSITIVE that they know what the dessert is and they roll over their partner, dismissing any objections.....and then they're wrong! I'm glad that mother-daughter pair left last week. That mother was so shrill and annoying. Why would they cast someone on a show like this who didn't even know what a croquembouche is? I don't know how to make one, but I sure as heck know what one is!

I've found the "clues" given to the dessert round winners for the second round have been virtually useless as far as I'm concerned. I DEFINITELY don't see how the team was supposed to get ANY insight from the clue tonight! The ones before this haven't really been any better.
Also, can someone tell me where the one lady went before the judging of the first round tonight? She was back for the 2nd round, so she didn't die or anything, LOL! I had to run out and feed the horse, so I missed that little bit of the show.

Agreed on the steamrolling. That's pretty amusing.

The dessert round winners took that extra clue way too literally. Sorry to see the guys go, but after that apple soup last week their days were numbered...

AZChristian, I never knew about blueberry pies having cinnamon in them, thanks for the info! Had I known, then that guess would've been assured.
ZookeeperTex, I find that some of the clues have been pretty good. For the princess cake, the toothpick with green food coloring basically guaranteed that it was princess cake, as the marzipan in it is that color. The black forest cake one had a vital clue in terms of the decorative element, the birch bark, as it was a specific color pattern.
Tonight's episode, the first round was another one I deduced correctly. Round two I was mostly correct, except I thought it would be three flavors instead of just one. I just find it fun and also hilarious how I have guessed almost every single dessert correctly just from the quick glimpses we get of the clues, even before the bakers start working in their kitchens, and yet these people who bake for a living often get them wrong, sometimes to an egregious degree.

It's the same as how people sitting at home on their couch can get all the Jeopardy answers right. It's very different when you're there under studio lights, with a timer and cameras on you!

Another episode where I guessed both desserts, always makes me feel good. I was so bummed over the eliminated team, though, I liked them a lot, but they made two fatal errors when inspecting the clues. Emma & Leslie were lucky, but man, Emma was annoying me a lot last night, she developed such a bad attitude this whole episode, and we've seen glimpses of it before, but it went much more notable here.
Can't believe next week is the finale. I guess one team may be eliminated in round one and the final three will battle it out?

I agree about the eliminated team. I really liked them and was sad to see them go.
I also agree about Emma. Boy is she wound tight! She's a lot like the son in the Mother/Son team, but Emma turns her frustration inward while the son always seems to blame his mom.
I felt bad for the Las Vegas couple, but it's always dangerous when you decide too soon that you know what the dessert is. She latched on to geode cake as soon as she saw the sugar and molds. Did they miss seeing the clue in the drawer that clearly showed that is was a fissure cake and gave the clues about Mother's Day and Winter? I think maybe they did and they only knew about the winter colors from the extra clue.

Emma is way too intense. I get wanting to win and being competitive, but damn, girl!
The eliminated team made a beautiful cake, but...it was the wrong kind of cake.

Poor Emma didn't even make the final bakeoff. She looked like she was about to burst into tears when they were eliminated... As soon as the judges tasted Luis and Natalie's chocolate cake and they got all quiet, I knew they'd won. That cake must have been GOOD. Plus it was the only one that looked like a birthday cake. I'm glad Thomas didn't win, he always seemed a little too gleeful when someone else screwed up. Most of them were supportive or at least sympathetic - not this guy.

When the challenge was to make a birthday cake for Yolanda, and Thomas carried out this all-white, minimally decorated cake . . . what?????
His defense was that he wanted to keep it elegant and classy.
Had he not seen Yolanda's dress? Why would someone think that a person wearing that dress would be interested in something that was elegant and classy.
To me, it showed that Thomas is just not very creative without "do it this way" instructions.

Don't believe everything reality contestants say. Googling them gives you the real background. Hmm.Interesting. I'll have to look them up. Their names are Jason and Lorie Burcham. {Spoiler} They didn't mention on the show their (not very successful) gofundme, the two businesses she started up and ran AFTER the fire, and his successful tile installation business. And how they "enjoy traveling around the country in their RV."
They didn't even own the house that burned (NOT to the ground). They rented it and didn't have renters insurance.

Just not really related to each other from a cause and effect perspective. {Spoiler} Thanks! I found the Go Fund Me from 2013, no less, and saw that that didn't own their home that burned and didn't have insurance. I didn't see the rest, but it seemed pretty clear that they didn't mind living in their RV.

I didn’t like all the stuff on the birthday cake and it was on a lean . They won because of the taste. I wish the team that was sent home first round would have had a chance at the cake. That was her thing.
Hope they have a second season. I liked this one.

That was her thing. Hope they have a second season. I liked this one. The judge whose birthday it was made comments about how the other cakes were pretty but didn't say birthday, so I think she liked that the winners had at least done birthday-themed decoration, even if they weren't the most fabulous decorations ever. It was clear that the judges were crazy about the flavor--especially the bananas Foster part, but I think they also thought the winning decoration was the most appropriate to the stated theme.

On the GFM page, they even updated to say that they'd found a new home and it didn't sound like it was the RV. Maybe they need money (don't we all?), but it felt a little shady to play up tragedy and make it sound like their situation was more dire.
No need to spoiler tag any of that BTW The show's over and none of that has anything to do with who won anyway.
I'm happy with the winning team. Yes, the cake leaned a bit, but everything else was on point. Great birthday-themed decorations and it tasted great. I wanted some of that bananas foster chocolate cake! Every one of their layers sounded incredible.
I would have been okay with Cathy and Thomas winning too. I just love their relationship.
I liked Emma and Leslie, but Emma just got too agro over the last few episodes. It wasn't pleasant. Hopefully, she'll watch the show and see how she came across and then adjust her behavior.

The final round twist was an interesting thing, but once they did, it was Luis & Natalie's to lose, so it felt a bit anti-climactic. Still, it was a lot of fun, and it seems taste won over everything, even though I didn't understand the "this doesn't "scream" birthday to me". I feel "birthday" is a broad approach, it can be anything, doesn't have to be shoe-horned into candles and sprinkles.
Still, this was a fantastic new baking show, very unique and original and I had a blast with it. I really hope we get a second season.

Just found this show and am watching it on cable and on HULU. Way better than I thought it would be. Deserves a second season.
I must say though watching some of these teams and many are professional bakers, I still think the folks on The Great British Bakeoff are way better. I cringed at the one teams apple pie and all I could think off was "soggy bottom". Also when they did the puff pastry for the Napolean pastries it was bad, very bad.
Joel McHale did a great job as host, funny but not too snarky.

I found the GoFundMe and it was from 2013 and showed their kids who should all be out of the house by now. That backstory is very misleading. However part of that could be production trying to find something about them for viewers to root for.
