Episode 1 - Brand Statement - Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn welcome 10 designers to Los Angeles, CA where they arrive with their first assignment already complete -- a two-look collection representative of their brand statement. In a twist, the designers must interview with Vogue Business to promote their brand before hitting the runway. One gets the win while one designer is sent home before they can even unpack.

There's been some changes made this season; instead of globetripping, the producers rented a beautiful compound in Malibu where the contestants, judges, and Heidi and Tim will eat, sleep, and create. It's a beautiful place and the work area is lovely; you could tell that the contestants were amazed by it. Everyone seems to get along, even Olivia (who has a bit of sass to her step and is overconfident to the point of being arrogant, as a judge points out to her later). The assignment is to make a two piece collection that best represents their brand. The runway area is in this conservatory on the property that is full of plants and a waterfall, and is a gorgeous backdrop for the clothes.

The clothes range from "I could have bought that at Ross" to "wow, this is neat" to "interesting, but no" and everything in between. The judging is like last year; they pick out the highest and "designs we have some questions about" designers to talk to, and I'm glad they stay away from "highest and lowest scoring" because everything is well-done, but there are some questionable pieces. To everyone's surprise, Gary is picked as the best of the week and it really shows; two beautiful, vaguely ethnic looking dresses made from two different fabrics that were very well-tailored and one of the dresses will be on Amazon to sell later on today. To no one's surprise, Lendall did not make the cut for marching out pants and a top you could buy in any menswear department anywhere. While not being thrilled about being the first man down he thanked them for the opportunity (and for what amounts to a multi-week vacation since he'll probably be sequestered in another area of the compound). Olivia is next and made something...interesting, yet straight-jackety? I liked it but could see why it would raise some eyebrows and in the middle of her critique she says "Well, this is interesting, because I've never had a bad critique ever!" Cue Tim looking incredulous and pissing off Jeremy Scott (who straight stank-eyed her and said there's a difference between being confident in ones work and being cocky). Sadly, she reminds me of people who got the lion's share of attention from teachers at school who constantly got smoke blown up their ass and have some success post-school, but when they are hit with the real world (who might not understand or even like their work) don't really know how to take it. Fortunately, the judges and Heidi decide they are intrigued enough to see more. Andrea P is next and her first outfit honestly has to be seen to be believed; it's a bridal pantsuit that was quite beautiful and feminine and a great alternative for an older bride with wonderful shoulders. The second was a more traditional bridal dress but had some issues with the fit. The judges decide she should go through on the strength of her first outfit.
Overall, it looks like this season is off to a good start!
