We watched the men's track and field. I love that, and the hurdles. I get itchy feet. My father won medals for running, and I ran in the juniors. De Grasse is excellent, I hope he wins gold.

How the heck do you watch streaming live of the Olympics. I have regular Peacock and it's these stupid 1 min snippets. I am on the NBC Olympic channels and just want to watch the different sections of the women's gymnastics and I can't. This all so stupid. I do not want to watch tonight's balance beam because I want to watch the event now with all the athletes. Okay, I looked last night/this morning as I was watching the gymnastics events and it was actually via the NBC app. Comcast has a whole Olympics platform and I just used the voice search for "gymnastics" and that was one of the results. Via the app, you can see all of the competitors. I tried watching on Peacock too and only got clips, which is annoying if you missed an event and want to see all of it. For instance, I missed the very beginning of the opening ceremonies and thought I'd just catch up on Peacock. That video was under 5 minutes long!
As for Simone Biles, she IS the GOAT. She has 25 World titles, she has at least 3 moves named after her, one of which is the most difficult/highest degree of difficulty move in gymnastics, she's won7 Olympic medals, including 4 golds. Her routines are actually routinely underscores because her degree of difficulty is higher than anyone else and the judges don't know what to do with that.
She's explained that the reason she's owned the GOAT label (and why it's on her leotard) is that she wants young people - and especially young girls of color - to see that they should OWN their accomplishments and be proud of themselves if they're good or great at something. I find it so interesting that people bash her for that, when if she was a white man, lots of those same people would agree (not directing that at you, ccl). She's both owning her accomplishments and, I think, not acting as if she's better than everyone else. She still went to every event and cheered her teammates on AND seemed pretty pleased with her bronze medal on balance beam. I don't think there's anything wrong with tooting your own horn and there's a difference between her calling herself the GOAT and her thinking that makes her a better person than anyone else.
I didn't see her without a mask very much. Any time the cameras were on her while she was in the stands watching the events, she had her mask on. During the balance beam competition, I only saw her maskless for any length of time when she was actually competing. They didn't show most of the competitors when they weren't either actively competing or in the "on-deck" circle. The only other time I saw her without a mask was when they took the medalists' pictures after the medal ceremony and they were spaced out. As soon as they were up on the top tier of the medal stand, they were masked. OH, and when they took pics of all of the balance beam final gymnasts together, the girls all took their masks off for the picture.
As great as the women's floor ex was, the men's high bar (my favorite gymnastics event) was such a bummer. At least four of the eight fell off the high bar and two or three fell off twice! The gold medalist was incredible, so he definitely didn't win just because he didn't fall, but it wasn't as fun to watch, knowing that some of these guys are having one of the worst routines of their lives and it was at the Olympics.

Yeah, I was on Peacock last night and just got these short clips, which was annoying. I tried YouTube but maybe there is a thing about not posting until a certain time. I just remember the last summer Olympics I was able to watch online entire sections of the gymnastics events.

Watching the women's park skateboarding heats on the NBC app. It's nice to watch ALL of an event! They're almost finished with Heat 2 and Sky Brown is in Heat 3. Fingers crossed that she kills it and makes it into the final!

Critical - I don’t know how to highlight the name - thanks for giving me her reasoning with regards to her assuming the goat label. Her reasoning makes a lot of sense and, knowing it, I understand more her embracing of the term. As for the mask thing - I frequently saw her in the stands without it on. Like, enough that I noted it. For the balance beam, I watched the full event on CBC - after every competitor came off they would show the other competitors going up to the woman who just finished and hugging her. I can assure you that Biles never once had her mask on during these interactions, and she was the only athlete not wearing it (apart from the competitor who had just finished and had not yet gone back to her seat). When the competition finished and they were about to all exit, only then was she shown getting her mask. I know this doesn’t really have anything to do with the Olympics per se, so I won’t go into it again, but lack of masking when it is required is one of my pet peeves right now.
Heptathlon and decathlon next two days. Yay.

ccl - just type the user's name after an "@" and it tags the poster That's probably the difference between NBC and CBC. They tend to focus on different things. I watched, but didn't see her maskless. That doesn't make me happy if she was maskless, but it makes me less angry than Michael Andrew, who was flagrantly maskless, even in press interviews AND is unvaccinated. Sky Brown is into the finals of the women's park skateboarding event! They haven't finished her round in prelims, but she was #1 (the competition is three rounds and you keep your top score) after her first run. After her second run, she increased her lead. She's now 5 points ahead of her nearest competitor. The finals is in a few hours - 12:30 Tokyo time.

I love the climbing! Wow! I have done lots of the sports featured in the Summer Olympics and that's why I think I enjoy them even more than the Winter contest. But I've never tried climbing and didn't even know that competing was a thing! The artistic swimming has been wild to watch, too. I did fantasize as a kid that I would do that one day . But I enjoy watching it now. Those women are incredible!
Sky Brown, the skater and winner of Dancing with the Stars, Jr. was fantastic to watch. Her enjoyment of the sport and the other girls/women participating is inspirational. The accident she had last year was horrific. She is so determined to do well and doesn't give up!
Speaking of giving up, Simone Biles has made me aware of the "Twisties" where these athletes lose track of where they are while in the air and thus could land on their heads or any unintended body part. It's made me think about the hyper-awareness they usually have in the seconds that they are up in the air! And how dangerous it would be to compete while suffering with that condition.

So sky brown got a bronze( bless her ). Goodness these kids are good, and the camaraderie between these boarders, is so nice to see. A lot of adults could learn from those young girls! It was so lovely to watch them not only be happy with their own runs and scores, but to be happy for their competitors as well. Watching them be just SO happy about skating well was wonderful. I love how excited they ALL were, regardless of the color of the medal or even if they didn't get a medal. Obviously, they're all just happy to be there and don't have a ton of pressure on them, but it's still a nice lesson.
I watched the whole event, including the downtime between rounds and all of the time they spent after the event being photographed. Those girls are just so sweet and charming.
I'd be surprised if we didn't see most of those girls back in Paris in three years. I feel okay calling them girls because so many of them are 12, 14 years old!
Sky Brown is just the cutest thing ever. I loved her on DWTS Juniors and she still seems just as sweet and unaffected by the attention she gets. I hope she stays that way.

There was an American male wrestler talking about how Simone Biles just needs to toughen up, and it struck me just how often men say things like that about women. He has NO clue what it takes to do what she does and how very dangerous it can be. He rolls around on a mat, so he needs to sit down and shut up.
I thought it was really telling how many people who don't know gymnastics said Simone just pulled out because she had a bad vault and thought she couldn't win. OTOH, gymnasts and people who understand what happened in that vault described it as "terrifying."
If you see pics of those gymnasts in the air where it really shows how high up they are, it's terrifying. I remember sitting on a balance beam in high school and thinking, "NOPE." Apparently, I'm a land mammal I mean, that wasn't going to happen anyway - I was already 5'7" by then, but you get what I'm saying. There was no way I was going to even stand up on that thing! The shots of Simone's vaults where you really see how high she is are incredible and really scary. If any gymnast feels like they should not compete, they shouldn't. The list of common gymnastics injuries in that documentary on Peacock are horrifying. You'd expect that from car crash victims. If you're not completely in your head and confident, you could seriously injure or kill yourself.
Same with platform diving. I remember when Sergei Chalibashvili (sp?) died in the early 80s after hitting his head on the platform. I never watch ANY platform diving competition without thinking about his death.
So sad for Raven Saunders. She won the silver in shot put on Sunday and then lost her mother on Tuesday morning. I can't imagine how awful that must be. The person (or one of them anyway) you want to get the big hug from when you come home with that medal isn't going to be there
I had NO idea that there was mixed synchronized swimming (not sure what the deal is with "artistic swimming") until yesterday and now I need it to be in the Olympics! This program is incredible! youtu.be/isPflUZ6Jf0

I'm sure the people who compete in race walking take is very seriously, but I just can't get into it. The race is on right now and it is just not gripping television.
I stayed up a little late watching the women's 10M platform final and OMG, that little Chinese girl (14, but looks 11!) who won the gold is incredible! She went into the water like a dart. My mom told me she saw a story about the Chinese diving program and the first thing the little ones learn is how to enter the water without a splash. It shows! She was beautiful to watch.

I do like the long endurance races as it is not so much about speed but grit/will power/determination which I think is more relatable to most people. If you have a good set of commentators that can do some backstories and color commentary it is a nice quiet burn.

Well, they showed the last 30 minutes or so of the marathon.
Saw the last bit of the men's 10m Platform diving, the Chinese men are phenomenal.
Canoe and Kayak finals are amazing, canoe is definitely an all body spot.
Saw some of the track and field finals. Italy is having an amazing Olympics.
Watching rhythmic gymnastics, the group event. I do think the long distance shots and long overhead shots do not show the event to any advantage, I can't see what is going on until the do after the event upclose shots and at that point you can see how intricate and difficult it is.

That final was pretty phenomenal all around. The top 5 especially, were SO good and there was some young talent who will likely be around for a few more Olympics. I was rooting for Tom Daley, but he did so well and got the bronze. I'm sure it's hard to feel bad when you dive really well and your competitors do as well. The Chinese divers were fantastic, but there were a lot of great divers in that final. I love that TD was knitting between dives. I'm sure it helped keep him calm in what was a high pressure situation. The sweater he knitted during the Games is gorgeous! It matches the little pouch he knitted for his gold medal. I guess he'll have to knit another one for his bronze medal!
The US women won golds in both volleyball and basketball today! It was so fun to see the medal ceremony for basketball - each player put the medal around the neck of the teammate next to them and then they hugged....all the way down the line. ALL three of the teams did this. It was so sweet. I really hope they keep that part of the medal ceremony. IMO, it means so much more for your teammate to put the medal around your neck OR to put it around your own neck. I'm hoping they'll show the volleyball medal ceremony too. I was so proud for Karch Kiraly. I know he really wanted his team to know what it feels like to win that gold medal. His emotion after they won was so touching.

I even recorded it on my DVR twice as they aired it twice on two different channels. Well, remember I said NBC would be rather inaccurate posting what was on a segment. Well, after spending multiple hours looking and fast warding I gave up. It was not there. I did find a 5 minute segment on YouTube for a 32 minute race. Even the posting on Hassan's YouTube Channel is a posting from a race in 2019 but the title indicates it is the Olympic race from Tokyo.

Well, darn! What a bummer that with all of that Olympic programming, they chose to eliminate that When I watched the skateboarding the other day, they literally just had the camera on the course between the action when the athletes were taking a break. There was NOTHING to see, but they still recorded it. If people watch that, why wouldn't they record that whole race to be aired on another channel/platform? I feel for people who don't have anything but basic broadcast channels (I know a few). They'd miss so much. If you didn't know any better and only watched NBC, you'd have NO idea about so many different sports. The prime time Olympics coverage on NBC, more than any other channel in the NBC "family," is SO USA-centric. They focus so much on American athletes and the sports most popular in the US....but they don't even show all of those events! I was glad for the NBC Sports App so I could watch all of the diving and the other events I really like.

I know some of the best stories were about athletes from small countries that were getting their first medal ever. That was so uplifting vs listening to podcasters and others getting rabid over Simone Biles competing. The USA which prides itself over how big and open hearted it is does not look good when the the populace foams at the mouth when potentially denied a medal, preferably gold because the others don't matter. I am surprised that I didn't hear anything about the men's dismal performance in the relay races. So glad for Italy they had a tremendous Olympics.
