Episode 5 - Avant-Garde - The designers will work in collaboration with iconic American brand, Levi's, to create a two-look denim collection, with one look being an Avant-Garde denim showstopper. Gary's looks were amazing! I'm not surprised he won, but I'm feeling for Andrea P. She did a really great job, too, and it must really suck to come in second all the time. I did love Gary's description, though. He has a really interesting mind! So creative and quirky in an wonderful way! I was surprised to see Joshua go home. I didn't like what he did, but I really thought Andrea S would be the one going home. She just did a better job of defending herself while he was quite defensive and seemed to have an attitude while talking to the judges. Not quite as bad as Olivia, but definitely not a good approach.

If they hadn't already decided he was on the bottom, I think that pushed them over the edge. That arrogance has no place in a show like this. He's not a name designer. He needs to take the criticism and grow from it. I wasn't surprised he was eliminated. I thought that red monstrosity was horrible.
I liked Andrea's gown with the crazy arms, but her other look was kind of "meh."
I loved both of Gary's looks. That jacket is amazing, especially since the denim jacket is such a wardrobe staple. It's hard to do something new with a garment like that, but he did.

I think Josh doomed his own chances before he arrived in LA, by trying to create a new brand just for the show. That's like showing up to the Indy 500 and trying to build your car while the race is going on. The judges never had a baseline to judge his looks against.
But I agree, while Andrea's looks were pretty bad as well, the reason she stayed over him was that she used all the right buzzwords while defending herself. Josh just stood by the "attitude" he wants to put in his clothes, so if it's not showing up in the looks, he doesn't have anything else to stand on.
Lucie lucked out. She clearly doesn't have what it takes for this competition, but she lucked out because two other people had worse looks. If the judges had seen her in the workroom, I wonder if they would have kept her...

Gary - luv'ed his explanation, he is getting better at describing his look and controlling his nerves. I do wish the model had shown what was underneath on the avant garde look. Hope his photoshop skills improve.
Andrea P - I feel that Andrea P and Gary are the top two designers this season. I like that she makes her curvy model look good, but I do agree with the judges in the accessible look needed more structure on the top. It was a fabulous look. I also enjoyed Andrea P's avant garde look, she had so much fun designing and putting the looks together.
Lucie - I was surprised she was not eliminated. I was not impressed with either of her looks. I like her as a person but have not been impressed with her designs.
Raf - I think Raf saved himself because he went for it with his avant garde look but for the life of me I can't remember his accessible look at all.
Andrea S - The accessible look fit nicely but was it enough. Her avant garde look looked like it needed a lot of editing. The editing made it seem as if she was a sure thing to being cut.
Joshua - Like Lucie and Andrea S I thought Joshua's looks were meh!
Overall I thought Lucie, Andrea S, and Joshua were the bottom three and I would be fine with all three being eliminated. I was surprised when it looked as if the judges gave Lucie a pass. It looked as if this was going to be another double elimination, which I would have been OK with. Andrea S saved herself.

I agree with you about Lucie, MFWalkoff. She keeps squeaking through with looks that aren't at all special. I think she'll be going soon. (I haven't watched episode 6 yet, so no one tell me if she's already gone. LOL)

Andrea "S" advante garde look was not flattering and juvenile in a bad way. That really was not a military jacket.
I do not think Joshua made the most of the Making the Cut exposure for people to want to see more from him.
My favorites: Andrea P and Gary

I actually felt bad for Joshua, because his avant garde look wasn't all that bad. The coat was cool! I think they were nit-picking, and their reasons were dumb when it's avant garde and "anything goes." So they didn't like the ruffle. One of them said he didn't have to throw everything onto one look, but take off the ruffle and it would've been just a nice coat (which is what Heidi said). Seemed they had their minds made up right off the bat. Other looks were equally as weird, and Raf's had wayyyy more things thrown onto his avant garde look but they didn't call him out on that. I didn't think his explanation of the punk influences was defensive, and he admitted he was trying to push himself. They were too harsh on him, IMO. Lucie and Andrea's looks were very disappointing. Lucie's were super boring! I can't believe they let that slide. At least Joshua TRIED something with his avant garde look, even saying he pushed himself. Lucie told the judges, well that's just my taste, sorry, when they wanted it to be something MORE. And she got to stay, wasn't that being defensive? Andrea's passionate, and I didn't mind her glittery look that much - at least she did something different with that. But her bleached jeans and jacket look were something that's already been done and out there, so she should have been out too. But she talked the talk, so they changed their minds. Gary is such a unique individual - he cracks me up! Trying on Andrea's sleeve, and that opening line to his speech?! Awesome. I loved that little dress, and could see wearing it! The upside-downible jacket was a cool idea but I wouldn't wear it, still I give him credit for doing something new. His avant garde look was cool too, but not really that "out there" like I was expecting. Andrea's poufy sleeved outfit was very avant garde, and the whole walking thing was dumb (that judge annoyed me this episode): who cares if she can't walk in it, it's never going to be worn anywhere!! I liked her jumpsuit a lot, and didn't see much wrong with the fit, but wished there would've been a hint of the embellishment she had on her poufy look. Those tassels were cool, the sheer panels were cool, so something could've elevated that jumpsuit a bit without going overboard. Lucie missing the seamstress pick up was ridiculous! She seemed so oblivious to everything! She must be really good at tuning things out and concentrating.

All the judges raved about how well the jumpsuit fit on the bottom, and the proportions were very flattering for it being a wide leg on a curvy model. The judges did not like the way the jumpsuit fit on top.

Yeah. I think they liked the idea of the top part of the jumpsuit, but it needed some boning or something. It was kind of "slouching" on her body in a way that didn't look quite right. (And I don't think it was because it didn't fit her right. It just needed some structure to help it stay up since it was off-the-shoulder.)

Once again, the production designers on this show deserve an award for building runways that fit the theme, yet do not take away from the beauty of the clothes displayed. A circus theme for an avant garde show is ingenious, and limiting their fabric to denim made it even more so. I deliberately waited a couple of days after I watched the show to post here because I wanted to see what designs I remembered over time.
Raf: I can barely remember his looks except there were a bunch of streamers around the arms on one of his garments that was interesting.
Lucie: Not avant garde. I do remember both her looks being very Parisian, which is a good thing. However, I also remember the shoulder area being jacked up on the avant garde piece, which ruined it. I can't even remember the second look except it had a very classic French silhouette which was nice. Personally, I think Lucie does whatever Lucie wants to do regardless of the challenge lol.
Andrea S: I finally think I have her clientele figured out after this. Similar to Esthar and her "Grown up Goth girl who wants something a little nicer, but still in that wheelhouse" aesthetic Andrea S's clothes are made for grown-up club kids who have a little more money to spend and want something that is still sexy, but fits in with the better clubs for the older (30+) crowd. Quite frankly, her first look was like the ringleader at a circus and was more cartoony than avant garde, and her second look was very...well, in every major city there are shops that specialize in cheap, fast fashion club clothes and it would fit right in. It's not new, but it WILL sell.
Gary: Gary was typical Gary, and then the magic rolled down the runway. That avant garde coat was heaven; black and gray with extra texture added with the geometric triangle patterns and sheer panels. The dress underneath looked equally nice and I would have loved a closer look at it. One of Gary's strengths is his ability to create interesting patterns for his clothes and I LOVED the little dress with the circus ball print he made for his commercial look. The jacket was unusual and nice and I would wear it but LAWD, I covet that dress! Judging by the judges expressions they loved it too.
Joshua: I agree with the judges comments about his avant garde look. While at first I thought it was interesting, I realized that at the end of the day the design was not organic; it was a tie dyed coat with fins attached to it. The second look was very blah but unlike Raf's second look (that had the interesting pockets) it stayed blah, and he got super defensive about it. Even after he was cut he was basically like "It's their loss" so I don't know why he was even on the show in the first place.
Andrea P: The Magic Came Out, Part Two. At first, when she was talking about making a dress based on old bubble jackets I thought "Oh no, gurl...please don't do that." But she did it and it was amazing! You could definitely see the bubble jacket influence but it was its own thing and it was gorgeous. Everything was organic like it belonged together, none of this "I just put some random things on a dress to make it avant garde" stuff. The judges were also excited when this came out on the runway and you could tell they really enjoyed looking at it (which is also an important component of avant garde). The tailoring on the commercial outfit was top-notch; it's extremely hard to find a well-fitting wide legged pant for the bigger lady and those pants fit like a chef's kiss. I also liked the top, but there were some slight fitting issues.
Final Thoughts: This is shaping up to be a 2-person contest.
