I quit watching somewhere around the end of season 2/beginning of season 3, I think. Noah and Allison were still together-ish, but cracks were forming in their relationship. At the time, I didn't get Showtime and was having to hunt down episodes online. I have Showtime now, so I'm wondering if it's worth catching up. Opinions?

I hunted around the internet and found that Rotten Tomatoes gave S3 of The Affair a 79% while RT gave S1 and S2 a 90%. Season 3 was a bit odd, as I recall it was more about NOAH then anyone else most of the season. S3 ended January 2017 so its been a while since it ended.

My recollection is that season 3 went in some odd places, but towards the end started setting things up to be back on track and more interesting. I remember being excited for season 4 by the time the whole thing was over.

I'll definitely watch season 4. Does anyone know if all the episodes will be released on Showtime at once? Or will we have to wait for the episodes to be aired once a week?

Yes, we will have to wait ... its week to week. Did anyone watch this past Sunday? Very interesting. Just Noah and Helen this episode. They are all in L.A. now!!!

I thought it was an interesting change of pace having them move - also fascinated by how the episode ended and where that will take us.

I opted to just start again with season 4 and not try to remember which season 3 episodes I missed. From all accounts, it was not a strong season. After one episode, I remembered how frustrating Noah is as a character. I have a tough time with it because I like Dominic West so much. I'm also remembering how unlikable most of these characters are, even in their own viewpoint stories. Cole is nearly the only main character who I mostly like. Oh, and I remembered that sometimes the high point of the episode is the opening credits song by Fiona Apple

Agreed. I haven't even bothered watching last night's episode yet. I think the thing that really made this show stand out - the two part narrative - is bogging it down because it takes forever for anything to happen AND the characters are spread all over the map, literally. It was more interesting when they were literally bumping into each other.
Some shows really should only last a few seasons.

I think it would be better served if they drop the two part narrative. It was fascinating in the beginning when it illustrated the difference in perspective each person had - Noah sees Allison in the diner as this hot vixen in a tight dress with perfect hair and make up ... Allison remembers going to work in a frumpy uniform with messy hair and no make up. But now, in the two part thing we're not seeing different perspectives. We MIGHT get an explanation for one or two things that seemed like bad behavior but were understandable. I think they could tell the story better if they just did an hour of a story.

Agreed, although that narrative does still reveal things about how each character perceives events. I got a chuckle out of how Cole remembered the stuff the kid drew all over his face vs. what Allison saw.
I think having the character so spread out geographically is just problematic. Hopefully when Vic dies, Helen will move back east with the kids and Noah will follow.

I know they are supposed to be doing one more season of this show, and I want to see where it goes. That said, had they chosen to end the entire series after the scene outside the hospital with Helen and Noah, I would have considered it a perfect ending. They were both so good in that scene! And I’d like them to get away from hospital scenes with Helen because when Maura Tierney is in that setting I see nothing but ER and Abby Lockhart in her!

I've been behind by a few weeks and I just saw an article about Ruth Wilson leaving the show and how it was a) NOT her choice and b) she wasn't allowed to discuss it. Now that I know they killed off Allison - my favorite character on the show, played by my favorite actor on the show - I don't think I want to watch any more. Ruth Wilson was the reason I tuned into the show in the first place. IMO, Allison was the most interesting, complex character on the show. Without her, I don't really care what happens. Everything the showrunners say about her in this article sounds like total bs. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/ruth-wilson-affair-exit-explained-1135396There's no way that she should have been earning less than Dominic West, especially after winning the only lead acting award anyone on the show has received (Maura Tierney won a supporting GG). It feels to me like she rubbed TPTB the wrong way by pointing out the pay inequity and they wrote her off. IMO, there was SO much more they could have done with Allison's story. I think I'm deleting this show from my DVR. Again.

The "she isn't allowed to talk about it" part of her story is really really strange.

Agreed. If she asked to be written out, I can't imagine why she just wouldn't say that. Even if there was a situation of harassment or she was treated terribly OR just didn't want to stay due to the unequal pay issue, she could still just say she was leaving to pursue "other opportunities" if she wanted to avoid further questions.

Well as critical as she was to the show, I will say that in the season finale, they did set things up very nicely for next season to keep things going without her and to wrap things up. I was skeptical, but with the set up they did, I'm intrigued enough to keep watching. But for me, Maura Tierney was always the draw of the show rather than Ruth Wilson. So if I were in your shoes, I can't say I wouldn't feel the same that you do.

OK I have not been here to this thread in awhile and I was planning on backing away altogether from this show ....... but the other day I noticed they were on my dvr and decided to binge the last 3. WHAT THE WHAT .... my hubby and I are watching and THEY KILLED ALLISON OFF..........????? So now reading here its all very ODD what happened to her, RW. MT was not at her best I thought this Season. She was just sooooooo angry the whole Season. I don't think there was one time in any episode that she was happy with anyone. I was getting kind of tired of that right up to the last scene with Whitney. I actually thought when she was on the roof of that building in the end she was going to JUMP OFF IT. The last episode was weird ... they took Joanie to the "ocean" funeral but had yet to tell her it was her Mother that had died. Honestly, I am confused how this show will go on with out Ruth Wilson.

I have some thoughtso n that. I'm going to try to put it in spoilers because it requires info from the finale -- {Spoiler} I think the final season will explore the impact of infidelity on the original relationship - Helen and Noah. Helen's character has now gone through the impact of being cheated on for the second time. First Noah with Allison, and now her dying husband with the neighbor woman. And she can't ignore the infidelity with the neighbor woman since now her dying (dead next season?) husband's child will be coming into the world. A child he desperately wanted to have for his parents to be grandparents. So I think we'll see how she picks up the pieces, and how Noah plays a role in suppporting her through that. The knocked up neighbor becomes the mistress now instead of Allison. AND, since Cole was going back to declare his love for Allison, he's got to deal with cleaning up the pieces of loving his former wife and how that impacts his current wife.

I can't get over what a boneheaded decision it was to fire Ruth Wilson. IMO, Allison was the one that held the story together AND she had great chemistry with everyone in the cast. I love Maura Tierney, but Helen has been a shrew for the last few seasons. It's hard to see why any man finds her appealing. I never really felt a connection to Vik either, so his cancer storyline is just "meh" for me.
I did delete this show from my DVR. I'm going to get my RW fix when the new episodes of Luther finally drop. Alice Morgan is my favorite sociopath

I hope Ruth Wilson makes more than just an appearance in the new season of Luther. I look forward to her stealing those scenes! I just finished the newest season of The Affair. I agree with most of everyone's opinions. I have always loved each of these characters for all their flaws. And when the show is good it is good. Completely shocked Allison won't be back but since it's the final season I am interested to see where it can go. Maybe a reset will do it some good. I really need some more growth from Helen. I look forward to all the POV from Cole. He broke my heart this season. I really hope his wife isn't back this next season. I know she is good for him but I can't imagine that would be an interesting story to tell anymore. He needs a fresh start without the rebound after Allison. Whitney popping up in one episode cracked me up. Of course they did that.

Finally found these boards again after weeks of wondering what happened to the old site!
Personally, I loved this season of the show and thought it very much made up for last season's throw-away season. Still processing the shock of Allison's passing...shocked that she's gone. As far as I know there will be another season....season 5, the last and final season, so I'll be interested to see what will happen now that Allison is out of the picture.

BSL!!!!! I'm so glad you found us!!!!! I think that I would agree that this season was better than season 3, though I'll be fair and say I'm not sure if that is because it's more fresh in my mind or if I truly thought it was better.

Yes I did....so happy to see everyone again! Was STUNNED to see the original FORT no longer there. So I Googled a bit more and here you all are! YAY!! To me this season just had deeper story lines than last season. Feel so bad for Helen though. Everything sucks for her right now....EVERYTHING. Ugh! Great acting by all the cast too.

SUPER sketchy I wonder if the real story will ever come out. If that writer is still employed by Showtime, she's probably trying go keep her job, which I guess I can't fault her for. Still, if something is being covered up, it'll eventually come out. It almost always does.
