Sometimes people just grow apart and it's time to collect your marbles and go home. I wish both of them the best. Goodness knows there are plenty of marbles to go around.

I was shocked as I don't know them other than their reputations in philanthropy and software development. Oh, I know they have or had what was a state of the art house on a lake in WA. I know their daughter is a horse person and, I think, recently engaged. Their announcement was a kick in the pants for me.

There are different types of marriages. They had an agreement, and they stayed solidly married for 27 years so obviously it was not a dealbreaker. Melinda probably had a private backdoor man as well; it wouldn't shock me.

Sounds a little like Charles and Camilla. Especially the part where Bill asked Ann's approval.

It's kind creepy to me that he owns so much farmland - maybe creepy isn't the right word. But it gives me a weird feeling. Like...what in the world does he need all that land for???

I find this sad & disallusioning. I know I must be naive, but I always thought of them, & especially him, as one of the good guys. They just always seemed so attuned to each other & their Foundation goals. I guess even the most perfect marriages just aren't. There's always more going on behind the scenes. That is, except for my parents. They really were what they seemed, a picture perfect marriage. My family life growing up was just like a 50's TV sitcom. Only very small issues, and nothing that couldn't/wouldn't be resolved happily by the end of the weekly episode. I was so lucky.

I find it interesting that everyone assumes that Bill Gates and his ex were off banging each other once a year. While that's certainly possible, it's also possible that they remained good friends after their romance ran its course, and they just enjoy spending a vacation together as buddies. But then I've never though Bill Gates seemed like a particularly passionate person either.

I actually did have that thought. But if they were really great friends then their partners would probably also be friendly and it would be a whole event with all of them. Perhaps even kids would join. This sounded very exclusive and romantic.

I think Bill's association with Jeffrey Epstein is more troubling than his annual vacation with his ex. When I heard about the link to Epstein, I did wonder....

They had many meetings together. Bill downplayed their relationship early on, and there have been reports that they were closer than he said which raised eyebrows. But I don't think that his name is on an flight logs to the island, or other highly suspicious activity. I believe Bill has said their connection was all about links to wealthy people to raise money for the foundation. Who knows whether or not that's all it was.

That escalated quickly.
The HFPA, which hands out the Golden Globe Awards, has been under fire for months, following an initial exposé by the Los Angeles Times about both the small, insular organization’s questionable financial practices, as well as paltry record of diversity and representation (including an entire lack of Black members). Last week, the group released a framework for reform that includes measures to increase the number of people of color in its ranks. The plan, which was approved on Thursday, also includes new restrictions on gifts that the members could receive and payments for work on their committees.

I'm not surprised about the backlash against the HFPA. There have been rumors about shady activities for years, including financial kickbacks, sexual favors, vacations, facetime with stars, etc. for votes/nominations. Recently, I've even read a few recent blind items asserting that they didn't even give the awards to actual winners, but to the ones who provided the next* optics. There have also LONG been accusations that they nominate certain big celebrities whose work might not merit an award in the hope that they'll show up for the awards show and help the ratings for the awards show and image of the HFPA. IIRC, the last number I heard, with respect to membership is that it was around 100-ish people. That small a number of people shouldn't be considered so powerful. I seem to remember a time when the Golden Globes were on basic cable. Maybe several different channels at a time. It only has gotten so much attention, IMO, because they serve alcohol and things get "looser" the longer she show goes on.
ETA: *best (for some reason, those are two words my fingers confuse when I'm typing. Weirdness)

Remember Lady Gaga winning for "AHS: Hotel" over Kiki in Fargo 2? I mean, she was decent but Kirsten was phenomenal in that role and should have won. Then there was the whole "Emily in Paris" scandal where HFPA members basically got bribed for nominations; it was a cute show but didn't deserve those noms it got at all. That was the last straw.

Apparently JLo and Ben Affleck took off for a week-long private vacation in Montana. I will laugh so hard if after all this time, marriages, and children they end up back together again...and stay together this time.

I know, right? This "secret-public" vacay is really rubbing people's noses in it. Apparently A-Rod has been trying to get something going again and she left him hanging, lol. It's well-deserved.

She just can’t stand for anyone to think that she’s single for even one second. If she wasn’t with a man, people might think she was undesirable or, *gasp* old! 😂

This is all for A-rod to see. He really screwed up as he usually does. I think this time Bennifer can work because marriage doesn't have to be a part of the mix.

I think JLo is okay (other than her not being single thing). Two different women, two different personality types, and both are fine. Besides that, J. Gardner has cheated on every boyfriend she has had since getting famous to slide over to the next guy before she met Ben so she's not perfect either; she's done a remarkable job of rebranding herself.
