AMERICAN WOMAN - an American sitcom created by 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' star Kyle Richards, and starring Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, and Cheyenne Jackson. Kyle Richards says that the show was "inspired" by her own family life, when she was a child, and lived with her parents and her younger sister, child actress Kim Richards. But the show itself is fictionalized, and the storyline of the show follows Bonnie, an unconventional mother struggling to raise her two daughters after leaving her husband amid the rise of second-wave feminism in the 1970s. With the help of her two best friends, Kathleen and Diana, these three women each discover their own brand of independence in a glamorous and ever-changing world reluctant to give it." The show premiered on June 7, 2018 on the Paramount Network. (Some episodes are also being shown on the TVLand Channel). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Woman_(TV_series)

The first episode was available OnDemand a few weeks ago, so I watched it. Not great, but interesting enough to keep watching. AS was a bit over-the-top with her performance, but maybe she'll relax into the role a bit.

I can't put my finger on it, but something was either missing, or perhaps a little too trite --- I don't know, but it was a little off for me. But, I definitely agree that given a chance, as we get to know the characters, it could turn out to be a good show.

I have not seen Alicia Silverstone since that teen thing....I am glad to see her as an adult. I'll keep watching. Meera Sorvino is interesting too.

I set it to recorded off a promo i saw.. it was interesting based on that I did not realize who was in it. I haven't seen Alicia in much after Clueless either.. but I know she has been active, didn't she take time off (or slow down) because of her son?? Pretty much American Pie is how i know Mena Suvari. I got a bit excited when you said Mira Sorvino tho.. but I think you meant Mena Suvari.. I was a bit less excited then hehe.

Well, the 2nd episode wasn't much better than the 1st, so I have a feeling that this is just how this show is going to continue to be. To me it feels kinda amateurish --- or maybe just very dated -- as if it was written in the 70s or 80s. I'm disappointed cause somehow I thought Kyle Richards would do something a whole lot more sophisticated. Guess not. (Hmmmm. Maybe that's partially why her sisters are so mad at her. )

Me neither. I have to wonder if the show would have been better with a more competent lead actress. Alicia Silverstone was just not up to the task, which is pretty sad. It’s not like this was Ibsen or something.

It’s not like this was Ibsen or something. Yes, I think a better lead actress would've helped a lot. But for me, even more than that, better writing would've been the answer! The show seemed so dated and corny from the very first episode. I really wanted to like it, especially since I love female-buddy shows, and they're few and far between. (The classic and best one being Sex and the City, but I also loved Army Wives, Mistresses, and A Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce.) But, this show just didn't do it for me.
