Did anyone say anything about supporting the Ukraine? Perfect platform to do it; it could have been a nod to World Peace but that idiot Will Smith makes it about him and just brings an awards event down into the gutter.

Overall, I liked the Oscar's this year. I thought Wanda, Regina and Amy were funny. Billie had a great performance and Jessica Chastain rightfully won. Somewhere Tammy Faye was smiling. I was surprised just how much I liked this movie.

I had to bring up Liza Minelli, it was painful to see, but kudos to Lady Gaga for treating her kindly but not condescending.

I don’t condone Will but Chris was way over the line. Would his joke be ok if Jada lost her hair to chemo? I lost my hair to chemo and I would have been crushed to be mocked to the whole world for it.

I lost my hair to chemo and I would have been crushed to be mocked to the whole world for it. I am sorry. No, it wasn't okay what he said. And it is different than going to a comedy club. You go to one of those, you have to expect that you might get targeted. You shouldn't be at an awards show, but this isn't the first time people have been mocked at an awards show. And just look at the things people post on social media about celebrities. The problem is the mocking has lost it's good humor and borders on mean. Again, he should have said something in his speech instead of what he did. What an opportunity to show the high road. I get he lost it, but you get to an age where you should learn to control yourself, use your intelligence and class.

I read in my newsfeed that Whoopie, who is an Academy board member said today on The View that his Oscar will not be taken from him. I'll have to wait until the show loads on Hulu before I see that whole segment on The View.
I didn't watch the Oscars, but heard plenty about his actions with film on the 11:00 news. No, he shouldn't have knee jerk reacted, he should have kept it private. It wasn't known at the time that he would be giving an acceptance speech, so no chance to comment about "the joke" as it happened, but he could have held it together and not shown American black on black violence on an international show. It was the violence of it that bothers me.
And no, I haven't read that Ukraine was highlighted on the show.

It only took 36 years smh for it to happen again:
Troy Kotsur, the first deaf male actor nominated for an Oscar, won best supporting honors for his role in “CODA.” Kotsur joins “CODA” costar Marlee Matlin as the only deaf Oscar winners. Matlin remains the youngest best actress winner at age 21 for the 1986 drama “Children of a Lesser God.”
The star-studded audience rose to its feet for Kotsur, a heavy favorite going in after already winning trophies from the British Academy Film Awards, SAG, Critics’ Choice and Independent Spirit. Javier Bardem, Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman and others brought up their hands and waved them about — what’s known as a deaf clap.
Presenter Youn Yuh-jung, last year’s supporting actress winner, signed Kotsur’s name before saying it into the mic. She handed the Oscar to Kotsur, then quickly grabbed it back, freeing his hands to make his comments in American Sign Language. An interpreter joined them on stage and choked up while delivering Kotsur’s remarks.
“This is amazing to be here on this journey,” Kotsur signed. “I cannot believe I’m here.”
In “CODA,” which stands for child of deaf adult, Kostur plays Frank, whose daughter, Ruby, struggles with being the only member of her family that isn’t deaf and the responsibility she feels for them.
Kotsur’s televised speeches at the other shows where he won were a highlight each time, and he didn’t disappoint in his moment of a lifetime.
“I just wanted to say this is dedicated to the Deaf community, the CODA community and the disabled community,” Kotsur signed. “This is our moment.”
The 53-year-old actor from Mesa, Arizona, has toiled in the industry for over 30 years. He had expressed gratitude for the recognition “CODA” brought him after enduring years of financial struggles. Kotsur’s career has received a welcomed boost as a result of the accolades.
Kotsur’s wife, actress Deanne Bray, is deaf. He kissed her before heading to the stage.
Much of Kotsur’s career has been spent on the stage. He’s appeared in productions for the National Theatre of the Deaf and Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles.
His television credits include “The Mandalorian,” “CSI: NY,” “Scrubs” and “Criminal Minds.”
Kotsur won the Oscar over Ciarán Hinds of “Belfast,” Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee of “The Power of the Dog,” and J.K. Simmons of “Being the Ricardos.”

I don’t condone Will but Chris was way over the line. Would his joke be ok if Jada lost her hair to chemo? I lost my hair to chemo and I would have been crushed to be mocked to the whole world for it. All Chris said was seeing Jada in GI Jane 2 and you could see Will Smith laughing. Today the news reported that Tiffany Hadish commented that Will just stood up and defended his wife. How stupid? Are we going to have duels to the death now? The entire situation was classless and could have been handled better. It looks as if Jada complained and had Will go and slap Chris. What about being a woman and standing up for yourself and confronting Chris Rock about it instead of acting like a helpless female that needs a man to solve her problems? Will Smith with one slap has provided so much ammunition to hate groups that men of color cannot control there tempers, about black on black violence, that black men are inherently violent, that casual violence is the answer to everything. How many people will see this behavior as approval for this kind of violence can't wait to see it spike on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. I normally do not care about what an actor does in their personal life, what matters to me is the performance they give in the role they are playing. This entire episode has left a bad taste in my mouth to the point I will probably ignore any shows in the future featuring Jada or Will as I cannot un-see the slap.

Right there, you have a good point. This just validates what some people in this country think, men of color can't "control" themselves. Imagine if something like this would have happened to someone like Sidney Poitier and his wife? Or Denzel and his wife? Would he have gotten up and assaulted someone? Where did class go? Where did being a gentleman go? Problems shouldn't be solved with a fist. Even Richard Williams said you don't hit someone unless it is for defense. Chris Rock could have slugged him back. Another thing Will could have done is have her come up with him. I think there is something going on in that marriage beyond a tasteless joke.

If Chris Rock is known to be so edgy, why ask him to an award show, you know what you're going to get

The show is NOT supposed to be about the host or presenters. It's supposed to focus on recognizing those who have excelled in their skill set. Who would go to a party where someone known to be rude to others will attend? Not us. We don't choose to be around jerks. It's a shame that the powers that be would rather deal with jerk drama than actually celebrate excellence.

For me as a viewer, he ruined the entire night of awards when he walked onto the stage, and threw a punch. His uncontrollable temper was not cool. Not cool at all.

Why didn't anyone from the Academy run on to the stage to see if CR was ok after the assault? As WS is back at his seat SCREAMING at the top of his lungs and dropping F bombs........what a COMPLETE DISGRACE. Literally NO one went to CR. And CR went on to give the next award. All over the internet I am seeing the hashtag #UseYourWords. My hashtags is #WillSmithRuinedTheOSCARS.

Today I saw a clip of Jude Hill's recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. He was very excited because he was going to the Oscars and he named off a few people who he was eager to see... and he really LIT UP about one person in particular.
Yah, you guessed it.
Way to kill a little boy's vision of a star, WS.

I find it disappointing that some people (celebs, not posters here) are praising WS for defending his wife. It reminds me of a story Dax Shepard has told about how he always felt good that he protected his wife, Kristen Bell. He would be physically aggressive towards others to keep her "safe" and felt like that was him being a good husband. What she finally told him is that, when he does things like that, it makes her feel LESS safe. Why would she feel good about her partner harming someone else in her name?
I can't get over the arrogance of WS thinking he can just walk up on stage in front of millions of people around the world. I'm not a big Will Smith fan (I've never seen the big deal), but this is beyond the pale.
Real men don't physically assault someone over a joke. If he was a real man, he would have taken CR aside after the show and spoken to him, asked for an apology to JADA, both to her and on his SM. Several stand-ups have talked about how they will now be worried about who the next Will Smith will be. That they'll have to worry about who's going to assault them over a joke. Rock's joke was in poor taste, obviously, but it didn't merit him being assaulted. I've read several articles about what the Academy is doing and it sounds like (as someone commented that Whoopi said) he likely will keep his Oscar. BUT, he could have his Academy membership suspended or revoked (I'd favor the latter). I also think he should be banned from all future shows. Apparently, OJ Simpson said he can related to WS. This is how you know you're in the wrong. Some have mentioned Ricky Gervais' jokes and I don't think they're in the same ballpark. I'd categorize his jokes as GG host as "taking the mickey." He's mocking rich, beautiful people. Folks were all up in arms when he talked about how much of a turd The Tourist with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp was - there were MANY rumors that the nominations for that movie were a way to get those two big stars to the awards show. It wouldn't have been the first time the HFP did something to rub elbows with movie stars.
This whole thing will leave, I hope, a BIG stain on Will Smith's career, but I'm sure there will be people willing to hire and work with him....and people eager to see his movies. As a tennis fan, I was actually looking forward to seeing King Richard. Now I'm not so sure I'll watch it

I saw the marquee at the Laugh Factory that Chris was using free speech. Actually, he was contracted, wasn't he to say the words on the teleprompter - the segment he rehearsed? What he did was like yelling Fire in a theater...free speech with consequences.
I'm not championing Smith's violent response by any means; but Rock also shoulders some culpability for the trigger. That it was played out in such a public forum was egregious.

VULNERABLE My mother lost her hair in her 50s due to I do not know what. She has worn a hat everywhere for more than 20 years. I have worried myself about losing hair and being in the same position. Jada's daughter shaves her head to make her mother feel better.
Chris rock gives me the not funny high school bully vibes. "I love you, but you are ugly." They were smiling because they could not anticipate what was coming out of Chris' mouth.
They all have been celebrating and drinking some. I do not think any less of Will Smith. He flipped seeing this guy humiliate his vulnerable wife. It can happen. Let us all be happy if we are not put in situations which could make us flip--monsters turning others into monsters.
Will has made many, huge, entertaining movies. I do not think this will affect him future project wise.
THE NEGATIVITY EVOKES AN OPINION We must say something about this negative whirlwind. I can see people siding based on what is their worst fear: the insulting bully or the face slapper. We want to protect someone. Who? Ourselves. I want to protect Jada and Will.
I see Jim Carrey saying he is horrified. The last news I ever heard about Jim Carrey was very negative and was certainly more horrific than any bullier or slapper news......but I can see where he is afraid of not funny comedians getting slapped.
Chris Rock's Ticket Sales went up--well, if that's the way you want to spend your time and money, go for it.
