Oh. I thought I read that the boat was drifting and that she would have had to exert a fair amount of effort to get him back into the boat. (But I guess we'll never really know what happened for sure.) I read a bit of both.. that the boat was drifting, she was able to push her son up in the boat (maybe he said something to indicate this as well) and that there are many factors that can be attributed as to why she drowned. Higher muscle mass vs fat in the body makes it hard to float for longer periods of time, muscle cramps in the legs, lake water temp, etc. I did see that one of the recovery divers said there are no rip currents or whirlpools in the lake but another said there can be.. so I dont know.. and we may never sadly I haven't been to Lake Piru in MANY years, but I do remember that the water was VERY cold (it felt colder than the ocean to me). That can be a factor too, especially in someone as petite and slender as Naya. It's a very deep lake too, so it's possible there are currents. I only remember wading in, not swimming. I think it's likely that she got tired and her body just got weak. Because the boat wasn't anchored/secured, it probably took some work to get her son to the boat and then onto it. It's just a terrible situation.

I saw a report yesterday about how high on the water pontoon boats sit, and if they are not anchored, they can be pushed easily and quickly by surface winds. It sounds like she used her last bit of effort to push her son back up on the boat, but that it continued to move away from her faster than she could swim in what became a state of exhaustion from the effort to save her son.
We watch a lot of the shows like North Woods Law, and whenever they are called to search for someone who falls out of a canoe, it's the ones without a life vest who drown. No solo adult should ever be boating without a life vest - and "solo" includes being the only adult with a small child.
It's tragic that poor decision-making can lead to a fatal outcome.

We definitely will never know. It could have been any of those things you mention. That's strange that the recovery diver said that there are no rip currents of whirlpools. I've seen reports that said the lake has a reputation for them and that local people refuse to swim there because of it and were campaigning to get signs put up warning people about them. There are so many conflicting stories that it's hard to know what to believe, though I'm remembering now that when the sheriff was speaking in one of his news conferences (perhaps the one where he talked about finding her body), and he specifically said that there were dangerous currents that tend to start up in the afternoon, which is when she was presumed to have drowned, so....

A few years ago after Christmas, I was in an Atlanta area mall and saw Congressman Lewis. We rode an escalator at the same time. I could not say a word as I was in awe of being in the presence of history. My mouth failed me that day, but the word that was on my heart then is the same on it today thinking about him - hero.

I was thinking about him recently as I passed a restaurant last week that I used to go to with my parents in Florida, and was thinking on how I saw Regis there. My friends and I are going to the restaurant tonight! I will be thinking of him.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Regis, but I'm still very, very sad to hear of his passing. He was one of those celebrities who seemed to be eternal. (Sort of like Dick Clark, who also had a long, long tv career.) But, Regis actually holds the Guiness World Record for having spent the most hours on television!!! I remember him from his very, very early days in the 1960s --- waaaay before Regis and Kathy Lee, when he had a local talk show in California. And he had an amazing career for many, many years from 1962 until just recently in 2020. RIP Mr. Philbin. You've earned a good rest. So many deaths this week. I grew up watching John Saxon in horror movies on weekend afternoons. Regis... what more can one say. And Olivia De Havilland.... I just adored her. Very sad week.
Since I didn't see a link for John Saxon

Currently at MSNBC there is a video - Rep John Lewis' body travels across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge one last time. Now that's a proper sendoff. God bless his soul.

My late brother held firmly to the belief that famous deaths come in threes. So we've had Regis Philbin, Olivia de Havilland (sob), and John Saxon.
Enough already!!!!

It was such a beautiful tribute. I was very pleased to see the respect all the networks showed in carrying it live. In the moment the casket passed 4 or 5 state troopers all saluting the casket at the base of the bridge ... I started bawling.

The horse drawn casket with the driver who would stand every so often and place his top hat over his heart had me verklempt before the true tears came. The Selma march was the first time I, as a teenager, had my eyes truly opened to the racial divide and the people trying to heal it. With Mr. Lewis' death, it has brought back all those emotions. RIP
