He was dealing with the deadly combo of multiple myeloma and COVID. I have a friend whose husband has multiple myeloma. They've been terrified throughout the pandemic of what could happen to him if he was exposed to COVID and have been militant about isolating and protecting him. It's a reality check to see what can happen.
Colin Powell was to me the personification of a man of honor. He knew what he believed and wasn't afraid to voice it - but he also didn't feel the need to cut down those who disagreed. He deserved every bit of the respect it held from so many and lived a great life.

He was a great man who deserved better than this. Almost everyone respected him; I still remember Chris Rock's live show talking about having Powell be Bush's running mate. "Why would you run with someone you could beat?" An honorable man in dishonorable times. RIP, General Powell.

How sad! I really enjoyed him in Bosom Buddies. Sounds like he's been sick for quite some time.

I literally gasped when I saw the news about Peter Scolari. I know he was often overshadowed by Tom Hanks, but I really enjoyed him as an actor. He was doing some nice work on Evil recently in what would have been a "nothing" role in the hands of another actor.
I haven't seen an episode of Bosom Buddies in decades and I'm sure it hasn't aged well, but those two guys were magic together.
66 is just way too young

I knew him first as The Boy With Green Hair. It took me a few movies and a couple of episodes of QL to realize it was the same actor. I remember him now as Al. My cousin had the pleasure of meeting him and hanging out with him on a documentary set. He said he was awesome and a lot of fun. What a loss.

Graham Edge, drummer for The Moody Blues, passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 80. How did all these guys get to be so old while I didn't? I grew up listening to The Moody Blues, they were my first foray into ProgRock.. and I had everything they ever did on vinyl even! I loved seeing them live too, they always put on such a great show. Graeme was the oldest member of the band, and now the third to pass. It is hard seeing all these bands I grew up listening to, and really in a way provided the soundtrack to my youth, passing now. Neil Peart's passing last year was another one that hit me hard... I guess I have a thing for drummers. Without Graeme there would never have been a Moody Blues in my opinion. I think i need to go pop on some Nights in White Satin for him.

I always dread clicking on this thread when there's a new post, but that one hits really hard. IMO, with musicals, you're either a Sondheim person or a Lloyd Webber person. I'm definitely a Sondheim girl. I LOVE him. He had a way of getting to the essence of what it's like to be human better than anyone else. I'm in tears. A month or two ago, I read James Lapine's wonderful book Putting it Together, about the writing and staging of Sunday in the Park with George. He had many passages from interviews with Sondheim. It made me hope that he had one more musical in him He was on Colbert just a few months ago. I still have it saved on my DVR. MFWalkoff - that Celebration at Carnegie Hall concert is my favorite. Patti Lupone definitely brought down the house I also love "Sunday" with Bernadette and the entire ensemble. I pretty much bawl through the whole thing because I love it so much. I have both the highlights CD and the double CD set of the whole concert. I know every breath and nuance. So many incredible performances of his unparalleled songbook. If anyone's interested, the full concert (I think) is on YouTube. It's WONDERFUL.

Yup I always come back to that Carnegie Hall concert as well. Madeline Kahn doing Not Getting Married Today. Betty Buckley doing Children Will Listen with the Harlem Boys Choir. The Tonics with their Good Thing Going/Company medley. And of course this banger from Dorothy Loudon...

Madelina Kahn's performance of "Getting Married Today" is a master class. There was no one better. In a previous Sondheim tribute, Beth Howland (aka Vera from Alice) performed "Getting Married Today" and you don't realize how much better it can be until you see Madeline Kahn. IIRC, in the previous tribute, Elaine Stritch sang "Broadway Baby." It definitely lands differently (and not better or worse) with Daisy Eagen singing it. Oh, and Liza looked and sounded incredible. Not a bad number in the whole evening. I would have preferred Betty Buckley to Glenn Close, but otherwise, pretty perfect.
For me, the only person missing from that tribute was Mandy Patinkin. I can't remember what project he was working on that kept him from doing the tribute, but it felt like he should have been there.
Since I heard the news, Sondheim songs have been running through my head. I know it wasn't a favorite of many people, but I love Passion. Donna Murphy was just sublime. "I Wish I Could Forget You" always guts me.

Creative Director for Louis Vuitton and OffWhite founder Virgil Abloh passed away yesterday. He was 41 and had a extremely fast-spreading cancer. This one really hit me in the gut because he was a Chicago boy made good and I just saw his retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art a couple of years ago. He was an artist as well as a designer who opened a lot of doors for people and it's sad because not a lot of people knew about his illness, and all I can think about is him and Chadwick Boseman as two men cut down before their time. So much death this year. And of course that social parasite Kanye is making it all about him by calling him "Donda's designer" and other nonsense at his Sunday Service (I remember a certain someone having an attitude problem at the MCA show because Virgil was getting all of the attention but will try not to think about it because it makes me angry). www.npr.org/2021/11/28/1059646710/renowned-fashion-designer-virgil-abloh-dies-at-41-after-a-private-battle-with-ca

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about Mike, although he'd been ill for quite some time. I feel so lucky that I got to see them on that reunion tour in (I think) 86, when they were all together and still healthy. I remember seeing Mickey and Davey in concert at Magic Mountain when I was maybe 8 years old.
