What they did was so great, and you could tell they really loved and appreciated it too. I especially like the fact that they called the husband's den where he hung out the "[Husband's Name] Den" as opposed to "Man Cave" because I've always hated that term. They did a great job on that areas well and thankfully got him a new comfty chair because the other one was held together with spit and prayer. the kitchen was also light, airy, and big.
Also, unlike other people Melissa actually helped with the demo.

Home Town: Season 4, Episode 14 - Fire and Water - April 13, 2020 While I detest green shingle roofs, Erin managed to make this one look good. I liked the staging with the rattan chairs giving the home an island feel. That was well done. I luv'ed what Erin did with the kitchens, creating that banquette seating was brilliant. Looks as if the seats had hinges and had storage underneath. I would have all my meals there. I do enjoy how this couple recycles materials into useful pieces and does not make it look hokey, they make it look as if that piece fits and is usable. I liked most of her designs in this episode but I just dislike painted brick exteriors. I know many folks aren't fans of original 'reddish' brick but it's so low maintenance and once painted it needs to be re-painted a lot. I feel this way about painted vs stained woodwork as well but realize I am probably in the minority. I loved the tile work above the outside water feature and the idea of using the recycled materials for the fountain and spigots but I guess I am not like Ben who always says in the opening credits that he likes a 'little dinge." I'd have shined those pieces up; I never cared for distressed painted furniture either. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I cannot stand distressed furniture, it makes me cringe. I do have a cousin whose wife buys furniture from various antique stores and he works on it so it looks new. It may have a chip or two on the edges but it is reconditioned and looks new and all the doors and hinges work like new. I don't mind it when they take old pieces lets say and paint the bottom, put in a new counter top and leave the top raw wood. It really depends what they do to the piece. I have yet to see either Ben or Erin deliberately distress a piece of furniture.

I know Melissa's aunt & uncle loved the overall renovation, but I wonder if the uncle still loved the redo to his mancave and the loss of his chair once all the camera crews left. Hopefully he finds the new chair comfy enough to make up for the loss of his old 'friend'.

New iteration of the House Hunters Series is on the way:
HGTV is launching House Hunters: LOL, a new socially-distanced version of their classic show House Hunters. The self-shot series will feature celebrity comedians offering funny commentary and finding humor in past episodes of the original show.
House Hunters: LOL includes six episodes and will premiere in June.
If you've ever tuned in to an episode of HGTV's House Hunters and yelled back at your TV when potential home buyers complain about a paint color ("Just paint over it, people!"), wondered how, exactly, two struggling musicians can afford an ocean-front property in the Caribbean ("Where did they get $1.4 million?!), or pondered why every husband feels the need to try the master bathtub on for size ("There goes Bob hopping into the clawfoot"), then the fine folks at the HGTV network have a new show tailor-made for your viewing and mocking pleasure.
In the newly greenlit House Hunters: LOL, socially-distanced celebrity comedians will chat with fellow comedians while watching past episodes, essentially narrating the show and finding fun and humor in America's obsession with stainless steel, man caves, open floor plans, and walk-in closets.
"House Hunters is a play-along phenomenon that has long inspired drinking games, snarky social media commentary, and spoofs on late-night television," says Jane Latman, president of HGTV. "While we're #HomeTogether, House Hunters: LOL will amp up the fun by combining our favorite comedians with one of America's favorite shows."
The six half-hour long episodes will premiere in June, and you can bet your granite countertops that we'll be glued to our televisions like crown molding to the ceiling.

Watched the last part of the Celebrity IOU with Melissa McCarthy - luv'ed what they did to her aunt and uncle's home. Luv'ed the kitchen and the cabinets. I like the style which is sort of a cross between a slab and a shaker. While I am not a fan of green the greyed greed cabinets looked great. I am so glad that the vent hoods are now more hidden and not a stand alone feature.
I am assuming they did the entire house and just did not show it.

No, just the first floor and the husband's half-basement - family room/den. There was much more green in the house before the renovation as the family is Irish and large. I enjoyed the whole episode even though I'm not a huge fan of hers.

I have been watching Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa and I wonder if the show is fake or not. So many folks doing their first flip with no experience. Totally ignoring his advise. The couple on last night bought a hoarder's house sight unseen from a wholesaler. 260 bunny rabbits had been removed. The wife a part time real estate agent decided to be the general contractor. She has no experience. They made so many mistakes, they kinda "cheaped" out in my opinion and the quality is suspect. Yet they made over $100,000 in profit. I think they were very lucky.

RIP. He always had a home town do it your self style on Trading Spaces and not so wild and crazy that the homeowners would rip it out after the show. Everyone seemed to like him. I was surprised he was 72 as I thought he was older during the show itself.

Home Town Season 4 Episode 15 - Town or Country: Extended Scenes - May 25, 2020
Home Town Season 4 made 16 episodes but so far 14 of those episodes aired and then there were several weeks of Home Town Watch were episodes were aired again with a bit of conversation from Ben and Erin. Finally they aired episode 15 this week. It was a 90 minute episode as it also aired the renovation of an Airstream trailer that they got from some friends. Loved what they did with the Airstream makes me want to get on the road and travel across the country.
I also like the couple who was downsizing because their kids were heading to college and they moved into a loft in downtown Laurel. Erin know how to re-imagine a kitchen. Luv how she extended it and changed out the entry point to the kitchen. Nice to learn about the hurricane proof insulated patio.

My DVR is picking up tonight's 9 pm episode of Home Town as new. It's called " The Cafe House" and it's not listed on the IMDB site for this season, nor is it listed for other prior seasons. They jump from 5/25 which is listed as Episode 15 to June 15, listed as Episode 16. Anyone know what is going on?

It was a cute couple who wanted to build a cafe in Laurel and have a live/work situation going on. They actually ended up buying BOTH properties that they were shown, but only one was on the show. Erin and Ben really outdid themselves with this. The cafe was so homey and nice...I could see eating a good meal there and lingering because you like the ambiance of the place. There was also a bit of personal bit of history with the house because it used to be a boardinghouse for young women and Erin's grandmother lived there at the time she met Erin's grandfather. They used the old framed windows of the building to create a hanging room divider; it looked really neat and I've never seen such a thing before. The "live" area was also really nice as well. I really like that Murphy bed Ben built.
I wonder when they are going to show the conclusion of the first episode, the one where the storm destroyed the house?

For some reason HGTV had a gap and aired reedited versions of Home Town labeled Watch Party of old episodes with a bit of Erin and Ben added in as if they are at home having a viewing party. Then HGTV aired the 4 episodes of the Celebrity IOU. So now HGTV aired episode 15 last week and episode 16 yesterday. Next week they will air an extra episode of what happened after the Hurricane hit Laurel and how they helped fix one of the houses they had already done. I check the Home Town wikipedia which tends to be more accurate with the episode count.

Home Town Season 4 Episode 16 - The Cafe - June 1, 2020
Two brothers looking to start a small business, a small coffee house with wine and snacks. Cute episode. Luv that they bought both properties. Oh My Gosh, the Stasi House, $25,000 and open holes in the floor. I give Erin so much credit that she can re-imagine both houses, into restaurateur spaces. I totally luv'ed it when their assistant (not sure what the position is) that told them the health department was totally shutting them down. I liked the colors, and they did a great job on the apartment for one of the brothers. The olive trim was interesting. You could tell they didn't expect very much in the apartment and they gave the brother a great kitchen, bathroom and living sleeping space.
Next week is the 90 season finale.

I can't believe how cheaply they got the Stasi house but it really was a mess! Erin is certainly a visionary because I couldn't even imagine what'd they'd do but it turned out great. I loved the wood cube thing that Ben built next to the bakery case. I liked how rustic it was and even liked the hanging window dividers but gosh, Ben and Erin aren't kidding when they say in the intro that they 'like a little dinge." I just can't with peeling wood. Which leads me to my next comment....Mr. ECM was half-watching with me and he said something which has always bothered me. They just paint over the peeling façade. He was sort of incredulous. Neither of us have ever heard of doing such a thing. That's why painting jobs can turn out to be expensive, both indoor and outdoors as the preparation work is labor-intensive. Why don't they even scrape the peeling paint? It's sloppy, imo. For as nice as the apartment turned out, the first house had a proper bedroom. I wonder if Connor is going to get tired of pulling that Murphy bed down every night?

I have wondered about the peeling paint myself as I have noticed that most times the paint jobs outside are bumpy to say the least. I don't think they scrap off all the paint, but I can't see a professional painter not wiping off as many loose flakes as possible before putting a new coat of paint on. One of my pet peeves has always been the crappy paint jobs on the old windows. I have never understood the fascination in keeping old windows that simply are not energy efficient. I do not live in Mississippi which gets really hot. I live in Virginia which is technically considered the South. The summers can be hot and humid. I recently had new windows put in and a few years before that new AC I cannot begin to describe the difference having better windows and better AC does to the comfort level of the house. Yes windows are incredibly expensive but even the lower grade ones in home improvement stores have to be a vast improvement over 50 to 80 yr old windows in the most the Home Town homes. PS: I luv'ed the back story on the Stasi house where it looked as if it was a boarding house for young ladies and Erin's Grandmother and great aunt lived there at one time.

I do like Erin and Ben a lot and I do like her design aesthetic most of the time, but I often feel that both of them 'cheap' out a lot. Energy efficient windows would be a priority in almost all of the houses they renovate, imo. As pretty as the renovations look on TV, I have a feeling that in person you'd be able to see where they cut corners. Kao, yes, they were brothers and the heavier brother, Elliott, was the principal chef, although he had said that he had taught Connor how to cook a bit and Connor had also worked in restaurants previously. Did you also miss where they were preparing food in their mom's kitchen and their mom, a blonde lady, said that the cooking gene skipped a generation and asked Elliott how he got to be such a great cook? He replied that it was 20 years of practice! I also forgot to mention that I teared up when Erin talked about her grandmother and how close they were and how difficult it's been since her nana no longer is able to speak. That was so very sad.

Watching the new Bargain Mansion show and it's wonderful. The host is very engaging and really has a gift for renovating old properties and picking finishes, colors, upgrades, and items that accentuate the age of the property yet make it look fresh and new. She also converted the entire 3rd floor attic space into a huge master suite. Best of all, she does everything with quality, but not a lot of money. I'll definitely watch again! I have watched quite a few of the Bargain Mansion shows. I like watching some of the methods, and floorplan changes. I appreciate that although she likes to keep the homes authentic to a point, she recognizes that closed off homes and tiny rooms are not what people want anymore.
BUT... her "style" is out there. She did a beautiful old home... nice kitchen, but painted the pantry neon pink, and a music room electric blue. Today she did a mud room with horrible wallpaper (even her father hated it) and neon yellow cupboards.
I suppose you either love it or hate it, but I think most people would hate it. Just too over the top. She also over decorates so much, it is hard to SEE the house and architecture. Modern paintings in every room of bold colors. At least they are removable. I don't mind color, but I like it on things that are easily changeable; linens, pillows, drapes, etc. But cupboards and walls in neon really look cheap to me, is certainly not authentic to the style, and it is a more involved "fix". Her lighting choices are odd too. She mixes modern and classic, but she also mixes metal colors; gold, silver and black all in one house.
I like all styles, but I like it when the designer actually picks one!
