Good Bones Season 5 Episode 9 - "MJ's Dream Home" - August 4, 2020 I was totally shocked at the transformation of the house as the budget was only $60,000 it simply did not seem as if that would be enough money. The outside of the house was whitewashed, there was new landscaping. They painted the front door. That sunroom was a killer space and a total surprise as you can't see it from the front of the house. I then realized that only two walls came down between the kitchen and living room and I can see the kitchen being a big ticket item. The rest of the renovations were not that bad. New flooring and paint in the sunroom and that retro fireplace. Only a slab of marble for the master bathroom countertop. Sanding the old floor, putting in new flooring where needed, paint all the rooms, some new furniture. I liked that they didn't have to tear the house down to the studs. The squirrels in the attic was funny.

I liked that house on Good Bones, too - it's nice to see them tackle a brick ranch, which we have a lot of around here. It almost looked sort of Joanna Gaines on the outside with the whitewashed brick and black window frames. I loved that huge sunroom with the old fireplace they had powder coated black. Nice kitchen too, I liked the wood cabinets. They went better with the house than white would have.

The budget was $100,000. The color palette was very similar to MJ's house, the blonde floor, the pale wood cabinets, black accents. I liked MJ's house and dislike the Build Me Up house. For a client whose favorite colors are blue and teal you do not see a single drop of that color inside the house. The walls are all bare and empty. I have seen minimalist homes looks great this one did not. I luv neutrals done with lots and lots of texture and this one just screamed big and boring. No pictures or knick knacks on the walls, nothing just big and empty. For that kind of money they should have done a bit of landscaping to the front of the house as it looked awful.

Still watching Renovation Island. If nothing else you do see what a huge build this is and that Sarah is not just a designer but a project manager. It shows how hard a project this is as at this point they have been on the island a year and a half before their soft opening when they originally thought they could get everything done in 6 months. The logistics of the project is huge. Even after getting boxes they had in storage flown in all have to be inventoried before the boxes can be opened and used. Everything needs to be tracked and accounted for.
The wedding was nice. I liked how small it was and the spray of flowers really looked good on the triangle stand.

^ I got sucked into Renovation Island a few weeks ago. Now I have to go back and watch from the start.
The Love It or List It premiere was good. I never saw the contractor buy the flooring from the owners before -- that was a new twist, which gave Hillary more money to spend. Nice reactions from the wife at the reveal.

Good Bones Season 5 Episode 10 - "The Boho Bungalow" - August 11, 2020
Nice to see another neighborhood. I totally luv that Karen in so into renovating Indianapolis and that she is so into the community and the arts programs. Sometimes I think she has too much energy. These ladies are great PR for the city of Indianapolis.
I like that they are taking into consideration the makeup of the neighborhood and the potential buyer. It was really interesting to see their choices regarding the renovation of the home and juggling what makes sense to do price wise. I have seen some really bad renovations on the realtor websites in the Indianapolis area. Just putting in better finishes does not make it a better home if the original footprint has terrible flow. Would this house have looked better if they were able to take some walls down? Yes, the office, living, dining, kitchen area are small enough and l-shaped enough that visually it would have been nice but I don't know if it really would have improved the flow. This is a great home for a single person, very affordable.
Liked the vertical board and batten siding look on the front of the house, really refreshes the home.
Ladies put air conditioning in which is a huge plus.
I liked the finishes especially the tile kitchen backsplash, the tile surround in the bathroom, and the deconstructed wall between the living room and dining room. The black and white tile was new, fresh, and the perfect touch for this home.
These ladies always pick some great light fixtures. I am amazed how dated old light fixtures make a home look and how new ones give the impression that the home has been updated. Every time I look at the realtor websites I get really negative vibe from homes that have the old cheap brass fixtures from the late 80's and 90's which every builder in the country used ad nauseum.
Another pet peeve in the realtor websites are the long strip lighting over vanities and folks selling the homes don't bother to have all the slots filled with light bulbs. Many are missing or don't work anymore. It's lazy and gives a bad impression of the home. Again fresh light fixtures and newer faucets can sell a home without doing much else.

This week's Build Me Up has divorced ladies whose ex husbands did all the decorating in the home and didn't allow their wives any say.
Luv'ed the first kitchen with the off white cabinets and absolutely wonderful bluish triangle backsplash. Amazing what Orlando can do with $50,000. The kitchen, the den, the living room, and the dining area. Amazing how different it all looks.
The second episode was similar as far as redoing the kitchen, dining, living room, and master bedroom. At first I was not sure the wood on wood tones would work but it looked so clean and neat and sophisticated. Liked how the master bedroom redo was mainly paint and new furniture and re-orientating the bed. Yes one wall was taken down, but it shows that you don't have to tear it down to the studs to make a huge difference.

I'm just catching up on all the Martha Knows Best shows. I'm glad to see an actual gardening show for once, the "G" has been missing on HGTV for a while. And I don't know why they stuck them on late Friday nights, but I'm enjoying the show.
More gardening shows, less flipping crap, please!

The only thing I wish is that Bryan and Sarah and more Sarah than Bryan would pull back on all the constant arguing. #ugh Sarah seems to complain ALLOT.

McGillivray, relying on his years of real estate and renovation experience, will teach families how to take their vacation property purchase and unlock its full rental potential.

It's very good!! I am loving it!! Sat is Scott and Sun is Bryan. It's nice to see what Scott and his designer can do with a rather odd cabin layout. However I do have a pet peeve. In at least two or three episodes they added a half bath yet in the description at the end of the show that half bath is described as a bathroom. To me a bathroom implies a full bathroom with a vanity/sink, a toilet/ and either a shower or bath or combo. You cannot bath in a half bath so if you vacation with 6 to 10 people and rent a cabin based on description of two baths and there is only really one full bath I would be upset.

They are married and business partners. Sarah wants a daily meeting to find out what is going on, he considers that a waste of time. Sarah is tracking everything, she needs to know what is happening so she can track everything. I get that. I also think women who demand information from a man are seen as complaining. I think this is all a common stereotype that every women in a position of authority is given. I know when I get stressed my voice rises. I don't notice it, I don't hear it, but everyone around me tells me that it happens. I get the calm down talk all the time and I am calm. The longer I have watched the show the better I get Sarah. This is a show and they are asking both Bryan and Sarah to talk. He is perceived as the calm one and she is perceived as the stressed out one. I seriously don't get that Sarah is complaining. She is explaining the situation. Again I think it is unconscious bias against women. Yes, her voice is a bit high which can come across whinny, I get that too. I also always voice my opinion and to others that gets translated to boy she complains a lot. But if I don't voice my opinion it never gets heard.

But if I don't voice my opinion it never gets heard. That's exactly what it is. Men who do this are considered assertive, authorative, and in control, while women are considered "bossy" "shrewish" and other negative terms, and it's because women are supposed to be sweet and agreeable at all times.

I think the better explanation is that Bryan is just an a**hole. The resort has been closed since Covid began. I'm going to place a bet that it never reopens.

Sarah is pretty demanding to me. Last night I loved when she said in 2 minutes I am going to walk out and he said don't wait on the 2 minutes do it now. She was being grumpy.
I am sure like other resorts once covid passes it will reopen. People will be clamoring to get away on a vacation and I can just about bet travel will be at an all time high.

Good Bones: I have to admit that I'm of two minds about what they do. On the one hand, unlike a lot of flippers, a lot of love and joy goes into their work, and I sincerely believe that they love Indiana and enjoy making unloved properties beautiful again and seeing once-dead areas get revitalized. On the other hand, I cannot deny that a lot of this leads to gentrification and displacement and as someone experiencing this in my neighborhood right now I can tell you it sucks.
That's why I was very happy tonight that they went into a different direction and were commissioned by a non-profit to create an artist residency out of an old, busted building. A lot of artists don't make a lot of money and survive off grants, and non-profit programs like this one that will give you a cheap (or free) place to stay while you are teaching, workshopping, working, or doing whatever the residency/grant requires. It was a small space, but very cute. I liked the fact that they designed/painted it in neutrals because I like the idea of every artist staying there leaving their mark on the house somewhere. I loved the kitchen and the shelves that went across the walls to hold plates, vases, etc., and the living room and bedroom were cosy and cute. I liked that they didn't knock down walls because the pillars separating the living room from the dining room was original to the house. Normally I hate it when people paint over exposed brick in homes but I understand why they did it in this case. The one thing it was missing was a proper workspace. Most setups like this are "live/work" with a room/area devoted to creating but this house was on the small side for that. I'm willing to bet that the person renting the house will get rid of the table in the porch area and use that as a workroom instead because it's filled with lots of light.
There's also a bit tonight with Mina that is very sweet, but I won't spoil it. Definitely worth a watch!

Hillary & David were on Kelly Clarkson yesterday, promoting the new season. They were filming new episodes in Raleigh earlier this year until everything shut down in March. Then they flew back to Toronto and have been there ever since, doing Zoom bits while they watch older episodes and get updates from the homeowners.
The Zoom episode that aired this week was more interesting than the new show that aired after it, because the owners said they were going to List It in the original episode, but then they had a change of heart and ended up staying put. They have since done more reno work on their own, and showed it off to Hillary & David via phone. (It was the house that had siding on the outside except for the middle third which was brick, and the husband wanted it all painted one color.)

Good Bones Season 5 Episode 11 - "Cottage Becomes Artistic Oasis" - August 18, 2020 It was a very small house and I too was wondering about a workspace for the artist. I cannot see a sculptor or multimedia artist in the space. Maybe a painter or writer. Overall I luv what the ladies do even on a limited budget. Both ladies have a really good understanding of the structure of a house and both are reasonable in regards to cost of materials. On the other hand they can take tile and paint and elevate the look and feel of any home they touch.
I liked how the ladies used the vertical board and batten siding to update the outside of the home. The house looks great with the same flooring through out, white paint, updated light fixtures, and updated kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The butcher block kitchen counter tops reflect the wood flooring. The access from the bedroom to the sun porch is nice and gives the illusion the room is bigger then it is. The extra light front the sun porch windows is very nice. That sun porch is a great multi-use space, a workout space, an office, a studio. While the house on the outside is not the prettiest I like that the team was able to save and reuse the main architectural features of the front door and the columns separating the living space from the kitchen.

Good Bones Season 5 Episode 12 - "Tad’s Tiny Home" - August 25, 2020Interesting build, putting a second story on a garage and giving little brother, Tad, a new home.
Liked the outside monochrome color, nice contrast with the garage door color. I did think that the internal layout was a bit weird with two bathrooms and a really small loft or was that loft larger than shown?

Specifically I was wondering about the loft space as the implication there was space for a second bedroom and storage as it was over the same area as the main floor bedroom and bathroom. All they showed is this really small area with chairs, but there was a door in the back wall that probably was the extra bedroom but they didn't show it. Also where the heck do you put up a TV. I can't believe Tad a 25 yr old male does not play video games and that requires a TV. I also wish they had opened the one door to that small balcony.

Out of sheer boredom I watched this week's Christina on the Coast - wow, the husband was pretty irritating. I liked the dark blue cabinets they settled on, and the flooring went well with it, but I wasn't a fan of all the black tile on the one fireplace. It was just too much.
I wish they'd cut this show down to a half hour, I don't see where it needs a full hour.

I just feel that Christina's design style is very simplistic and very predictable. In one sense to entire design was very simplistic and very expensive. $75,000? Really? I felt the husband was not getting his style at all and thankfully Christina gave him a tall black fireplace. I really feel this is scripted as all the design work, decisions, materials should be approved and agreed upon before any demo is done. Blue cabinets. Yes. Stainless steel hood, no, it would have been better wrapped. But overall it was a nice kitchen and the floating shelves made sense as decorative accessories. I do think that James the Stylist Christina hired in last week's episode is picking all the staging pieces as the poufs and other accessories looked fantastic and much better than Christina's normal work.

Watched the episode again and paid special attention to the blueprints this time and the 3D rendering. The loft is a full size loft with space for a bed, instead of keeping it a totally open area the ladies put up some walls making it a separate bedroom space with an open area in front with space for a desk and a sitting area. Unfortunately they didn't show the entire space and that is why it felt so small. On a second viewing of the episode I noticed that they did show the small balcony from the outside. I did think it a bit odd for a small space as this two have two full bathrooms but if Tad is going to have parties at his place it is probably a good idea to have extra plumbing. I also noticed the ladies put in brown gutters and downspouts and that balances the brown color of the garage door. I must say design wise and color wise the ladies are smart and provide much more than the average flipper/renovator. For such a small space you have loads of recessed lighting. The thermostat is digital. There is a digital lock on the front door as well as a ring doorbell. I have noticed before that the ladies put in extra security and modern touches in their homes and use better finishes even when being cost conscious. The kitchen had under cabinet lighting and who normally has that in such a small rental property? Tad is fortunate that Mina takes care of her family.

Apparently there is a series called Love It or List It- Australia. I'm watching season 3, episode 1 right now. It premiered in 2017 and they've done 3 seasons.
Whoa! Big renovation budget! $200,000! New home budget of 1.2 million! That's Australian dollars, btw.

Considering how the Americans usually "try to buy too much candy for a penny" (ie: cheap out on everything from the reno to new home budget and get angry when Hilary can't do everything and David can't get them a house in their desired neighborhood) this is really refreshing. I might check this out.

New home budget of 1.2 million! That's Australian dollars, btw. The current exchange rate is about $1US = $1.35AUS. So in $US the budget was about $130,000. I started watching the Australian show after the new US episode, but by that point I had Hillary & Dave on in the background for half the day while I was working, so I needed to move on to something other than HGTV. But I'll definitely check it out if it's on demand later this week. It was a weird dynamic having 2 men instead of a man/woman. But then we're used to men trying to destroy each other in real estate on shows like Million Dollar Listing. The two Aussie men seemed friendlier than that in the first few minutes I saw...
