Windy City Rehab - Season 2 Episode 5 - "Holding It Together" - October 13, 2020 Well the season 2 finale is done. Regardless of all the drama, Alison does a fabulous job of renovating the 3 flat building and making it a very nice space. Does her ego and self confidence (some say overconfidence) about her design get to be a bit much, well yes, but she produces a nice product. It is very obvious she is passionate about what she does and yes she does it well. She has picked a great team unfortunately it only takes one person not doing a good job in this business to totally mess it up. It was interesting to note the one lawyer was almost telling her to give up on finding out about what happened to the money. I think she needs to hire a forensic accountant and have access to Donovan's books. Will that ever happen I don't know. At this point we all know a lot of money went into Donovan's BE Custom Designs. What I like is that even when you decide to split with a business partnership it is not that easy, and looks as if this one took at least a year and a half. The question is will Donovan ever reimburse anyone? I must say that I liked seeing how Alison took her vision of stained glass windows and doors and put them together. Thanks to Arri the powder room doors look fabulous. I always thought the prices and rent were a bit high, but after watching a House Hunters yesterday about a couple looking a t townhouses and condos in Chicago that all cost about 1.3 million in comparison what they get with one of Alison's homes is a bargain and a lot more space. It really depends on where you want to live here but generally speaking the more "trendy" the area (ie: lots of restaurants, shops, and bars, parks, and walkability) and/or the closer to the downtown area the more you're going to pay in rent, and even in those areas it depends on who you're renting from and the condition of the unit. A rehabbed floor-thru unit like Alison's in the Ukranian Village with washer/dryer and other amenities will easily set you back $2100-2800, depending on your landlord. Generally speaking, private landlords that only have a few properties will charge less than those with a a big property management firm. Parking is 50/50; some landlords include it, while others do not. When I lived in East Village (the neighborhood directly east of Ukranian Village) there was parking in the back of our building that was free for the tenants, while parking in a neighborhood like Wrigleyville will go for 250-400/month because it's incredibly hard to find street parking over there even with residential permits and people will pay $$$ to have a dedicated parking space.
Also, keep in mind those houses/townhomes that cost the big bucks are generally newbuild/rehabbed spaces; there's still some deals to be had if you want to do the rehabbing yourself. A lot of the spaces Alison got in Bucktown/Wicker Park were in the 400-650k range, and the one in Bridgeport was 350k.

Flip or Flop - season premiere. I can't believe they made over 100K profit on that dinky 2 bedroom house. The kitchen didn't blow me away, same old colors. And it really did need a patio cover of some sort, who wants to bake in the sun on an open concrete pad.

Has the lawsuit even been settled between this couple and HGTV, Donovan, and Alison. I am sure this couple is not on Alison's priority list. BTW I can't read any of the Chicago Tribune or Chicago Sun news articles as they want you to subscribe and since I don't live in the area and am only interested in this story I will not be subscribing. Kao, Can you quote the article in full instead? From my understanding Alison tried to make it right with this couple on two separate occasions but they seem to want a lot of money on top of fixing the construction issues. Comes across as very greedy.

So it looks as if Alison is separated from Donovan as a partner legally. She is completing the buildings that needs to be finished, and selling off the buildings that have not been started but have been demoed, have blueprints and permits just to pay back all the bank loans. All the work needed to be done was done to get rid of the stop work orders. This leaves the three lawsuits, two by home owners, and the one by a trio of investors. Alison herself is suing Donovan to try to find out what happened to the money.
Where the heck is Donovan in all of this?
I enjoyed season two of Windy City Rehab, and hope there is a season three just so I can find out what the heck happened.

First they are suing Alison (who only did the design) and Donovan, and now they're suing Big Top Media AND Discovery Inc? They're just looking for a payout, period; otherwise they would have taken the offer to fix the damage. Whatever sympathy people had for this couple has evaporated because they are ridiculous. Who are they going to sue next, the landscaper? I can't wait for the November court date because I'm really hoping the judge will ask them why they didn't take the original deal to fix the house. Their actions prove that its not about the house at all; it's about taking a bad situation and milking it for whatever they can get, and that's just not on.

Design Star is coming back -- a new season has already begun filming. ------------------- "Design Star: Next Gen" in Production as HGTV Searches for America's Newest Home Renovation SuperstarSet to premiere in 2021, the six-episode series will be hosted by Allison Holker Boss and will feature eight finalists who are talented designers, renovators and social media brand-builders as they compete in intense weekly challenges.via press release from HGTV 11/02/20 - 07:42 AM HGTV is on the lookout for America's next home renovation superstar with the production of Design Star: Next Gen, a new high-stakes competition series inspired by HGTV Design Star - the most successful and highest-rated franchise in the network's history. Set to premiere in 2021, the six-episode series will be hosted by Allison Holker Boss and will feature eight finalists who are talented designers, renovators and social media brand-builders as they compete in intense weekly challenges. The distinguished judging panel will include head judge Jonathan Adler, designer Lauren Makk and a rotating cast of celebrity experts. In the end, only one competitor will win the once-in-a-lifetime prize of $50,000 and their very own HGTV show. "We've assembled an amazing cast of competitors for Design Star: Next Gen who will unleash their creativity to showcase distinctive styles and innovative approaches to renovation," said Loren Ruch, group senior vice president, programming and development, HGTV. "HGTV Design Star, the original series in the franchise, was an epic success, so fans have a pent-up desire for us to bring the concept back with a fresh spin." In a new twist, the series will be shot in an isolated "design hub" community away from typical production locations. Each competitor will be given a design lab - a house-like space that must be reimagined for each challenge. The community also will provide everything the competitors need, including a design center for sketching, a construction workshop to build their creations, as well as a fully stocked furniture and styling warehouse so they can focus on making gorgeous spaces. "This series will be fun, fast and energetic," said Ruch. "The design labs will really force the designers out of their comfort zones and demand truly innovative and creative transformations. Every designer in America wants to win a show on HGTV, so let the games begin!"

They have done shows with an included design and construction center. I wonder if they will use Terranea in Palos Verdes (many bungalows) as Food Network used their ballroom for Halloween and Holiday Baking Championships.
Looking forward to this. Good Luck, though, on getting an actual show. David Bromstad is the only winner who had staying power.

The Discovery Inc is going to be launching a new streaming service starting 1/4 called Discovery+ Interesting tidbits include:
"In addition to being able to stream seasons of your current faves from TLC, Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, OWN, ID, Animal Planet, etc, the service also promises new series from Chip and Joanna Gaines; Sir David Attenborough; David Schwimmer; Will Packer and Kevin Hart; Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis; and more."
What happened with the Magnolia Channel? Apparently things fell through with it because DIY Network is NOT in the Discovery Network and Magnolia was supposed to debut in the Fall. Hmmm.

Thank you, Amber!
Maybe they are doing the new show as a stop-gap between HGTV and the launch of Magnolia to kinda keep their name and faces out to the general public? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Watched Escape to the Chateau on Friday. What fun I want the chateau.
Inside Out aired Sunday and was also fun. Mid-century modern seems to be on the rise and potentially replace farmhouse modern?

I'll have to check out Inside Out.
I was bored and curious so I decided to check out the Discover+ website. Apparently Discover is going to have features and shows that will only be available to subscribers. Magnolia is under the Discover Inc umbrella and going to be on there as well as DIY and it will be very interesting to see if they only have the Magnolia Network on Discover+ rather than on regular cable and streaming networks. I know quite a few people who would pay the $6.99/month just for Magnolia TV and the bonus Chip and Jo content, and I'm sure they aren't alone.

There's some really good shows coming back for the 2021 roster. The Boise Boys and the Fords are getting their shows revamped. The International Lottery Dream House is coming back with that wonderful host, and they're going to have a show that is similar to "This Old House" with a designer, historian, and carpenter renovating 100+ year old homes in MA. deadline.com/2020/10/hgtv-2021-programming-slate-13-new-series-3-pilots-1234599676/

My little binge of HGTV included these on demand beauties:
Escape to the chateau - kinda fun, but I couldn’t stand all the side projects, such as decoupage game the bathroom, putting in a slide in the kids room, pinning dead butterflies to the salon. I think priorities needed to be set...like make sure the house is livable.
Lottery dream home. David goes to Racine, where his shopper just won $500k. She wants a house in the $100 - $140k range. The houses he showed her were so cute! I was shocked how reasonable the prices were. I figured a seaside community would be expensive. I liked the house she picked, it was adorable.

Those were faux butterflies just like the faux unicorn heads, wolf and giraffe. The first 2 episodes of Escape to the Chateau show the renovation the couple did over a 9 month period before the wedding. However the way the narrator made some comments you get the impression that the wedding was only a couple of weeks away. So there was room for some of the more wacky ideas Angel had.

The new episodes of Hometown start this Sunday at 7pm CST. I'm wondering how they are going to handle Covid on the show. There's also going to be a sneak peak of Joanna Gaines new cooking show premiering earlier in the day on HGTV, FN, and a few other Discovery channels...probably to get people more interested in Discover+

Oooo, it's located somewhere that I would move to! I like the red walls and the green rooms, but I would change most of the deep blue paint and furniture/accents. The Americana red/white/blue is way too over the top all over the house.

Just checked Erin's blog. Filming for season 4 started June 2019, they are doing 16 episodes and as of November 2019 they are halfway done. So it is more than likely they finished filming before the March 2020 lockdown of some states.

Looking forward to some new Hometown episodes, even if I hate the Sunday time slot.

Looking forward to some new Hometown episodes, even if I hate the Sunday time slot. Oh my gosh, I didn't even look at the house. I just signed up to get daily email reminders to enter daily. I don't really care what the dream house looks like b/c if I ever have the good fortune to win it, I'm going to take the cash alternative instead. I've read that so many winners have ultimately had to sell the dream houses b/c they couldn't keep up with the taxes. Unless the house was in a fabulous location that I could see myself traveling to, I doubt I'd want it. I wanted to win the Dream House in Austin so badly the year of that contest, b/c my son lives there, but it was not to be. I even got him hooked on entering each year. That Austin Dream House went to a deserving school teacher, so I couldn't feel too sorry for myself.
