More "Windy City Rehab" news. Apparently Donovan is mad and suing HGTV and Big Top Media over how he was depicted in Season 2:
Wow, that Lincoln Square couple is still suing. Donovan suing. This should be interesting. I know there is a lot of pressure on the hosts shoulders to get anywhere from 11 to 13 houses lined up to renovate. I remember reading an article about the Good Bones hosts where they said they went from building only a handful of homes over a year to having to sink money and manage 13 projects in a very narrow window of time due to the filming schedule. However other HGTV shows have managed it but only Donovan is a special snowflake??? I do believe that Victoria Alison was familiar with the budget and with the personal loans it is obvious she has a business sense as was shown in season 2 episodes. The problems with the budget were well documented in season 2 with massive creative accounting and lots of complaints and lawsuits regarding none payment of services.

The Good Bones and Property Bros people were smart enough to allot more money to getting a bigger crew to get things done on time. I noticed in particular on GB that their demo and construction crew got a lot bigger in the past season. Also, wasn't one of the complaints against Donovan because he claimed to have hired people to do work on one of the buildings but they never got the money? Donovan's company lost their license last March and it hasn't been renewed so he would have lost money anyway, and Alison's forensic accountant discovered multiple instances of him "misappropriating, embezzled or wrongfully derived money from past projects" and for him to claim otherwise is...wow. Just wow.
The Lincoln Square couple is suing pretty much everyone at this point in the hopes that someone will give them a big payday. No one here feels sorry for them anymore because it's obvious that their main motivation is greed.

In one of the lawsuits they tired to get the court to get Windy City Rehab off the air. I also think Alison has gone to mediate with them on one or two occasions and they just won't settle. Isn't this the couple that tired to get Donovan and Alison to redo items in the house when they had it on the market to sell? It was contentious at the end of the episode.

Isn't this the couple that tired to get Donovan and Alison to redo items in the house when they had it on the market to sell? It was contentious at the end of the episode. Not sure if it was the same couple but I know for a fact that Alison's people have tried on at least 3 occasions that I know of to mediate. The first time, they said they would come in and fix everything and the couple said no, they wanted money. The second time, Alison's people said "Okay, we will give you some money" and they countered back with "Okay, we want you to fix everything AND give us a big chunk of money!" The third time Alison's people asked them what they would feel comfortable with and they countered with the house being fixed and a ridiculous amount of money (ie: somewhere in the mid six figures to seven figures)." At that point, Alison's people were like "Nope" and now the couple is suing HGTV, Big Top Media, and probably the groundhog that lives on the property as well as Donovan and Alison. It's definitely greed because another couple who was suing because of issues with their reno just wanted the issues fixed and when Alison's people reached out and let them know they could do it with another team they were fine with that and dropped the suit. They even understood that the Lincoln Square couple might want to go with a different contractor to fix everything and offered them money that would have covered that expense and they still said no, they also wanted to be paid for their pain and aggravation, I guess? Either way, it stopped being about the house a long time ago.

Home Town Season 5 - Closer to Mom - February 21 2021
I think this couple is very lucky to have a mom that can afford a budget of $265,000 to buy a house in Laurel and have it renovated.
Nice to see a 1960's single floor I would call a ranch style and Erin a mid century modern.
Huge kitchen, liked the pops of light blue for some of the cabinets.
While the majority of the renovation budget was spent on the kitchen, den/family room and redoing the outside entertainment area with the idea of renovating the bedrooms and bathrooms at a later date I don't doubt the old carpet must have been either replaced or had a deep clean as well as all the rooms being repainted.

Tonight on HGTV there's a "first look" episode of Design Star: Next Gen at 9PM ET. The whole show will air on Discovery+. Watched it tonight and it's a fantastic revamp and will watch the remaining shows on Discovery+. I love the fact that they are on a big compound (I'm thinking because of Covid) and that each contestant has a little "house" that they will be doing the challenges in each week. A lot of the rooms were great, but I have to admit that one of the rooms was mad 80s. Instead of having a bottom two and the judges announcing who will be going home, the bottom three contestants are told to go back to their spaces; if they can unlock your door and get in, they are still in the competition. I felt really bad for the person that was locked out--it's both a suspenseful and mean way of finding out that you're going home.

Hometown: The home they chose was a very unique example of midcentury modern. The owners wanted a white kitchen but I love how Erin used a softer white paint and blue tiled backsplash to break up the white, along with the very light blue cabinets. The light blue carried over to the living room/den with the bookshelves. The outside area was fantastic and well worth the money rehabbing as they can cook, entertain, and be sheltered by a beautiful roof over that area.
At Home With The Fords: The ratio of shows that I liked are now at 4/2. The homeowner had a beautiful sunroom with a ceder peaked roof with skylights that was amazing and Leanne decided to make that area into the kitchen/relaxation area, which was cool. What wasn't cool was the fact that she painted everything in that room--including the beautiful roof-- that flat bright white that every landlord paints their apartments. I almost turned away at that point but the masochist in me was dying to see what would happen next, and what happened was So. Much. White. The whole house, furniture, etc was all white with the occasional pop of beige from rugs, knickknacks, and pillows. The only thing of color was this lighting system above the fireplace that you could put different colored pieces of acrylic in for holidays. It's the type of house that is purely for show and you can't imagine kicking off your shoes to sit on the sofa, perhaps with a glass of wine. Or cooking in the completely sterile, white kitchen. I can't imagine all the cleaning and dusting that needs to be done everyday to keep that house clean. Bleh.

The ceiling was beautiful. I didn't like the 3D illustration of what Leanne wanted to do and I didn't like the look of the kitchen. It sounds as if she made the room ugly. Think Leanne Ford would melt if she used color?

I do, atwi80d Do you have any questions? Bearcata : Leanne used color with the Farmhouse and...what she did last week for the young lady who inherited her grandpa's house. The whole premise of their show now is to help people who grew up in PA and moved away who have since moved back to family homes, or have always lived there and want a makeover. I'm going to assume that the lady this week wanted an all white home.

People usually don't know what they want and rely on their designers. You are hiring a designer based on their work and the client liked Leanne's look which is white, white, white.

Home Town Season 5, Episode 8 - Clean Lines, Open Spaces February 28, 2021
Liked the mid-centaury mod house. However it's 3,000 sq ft for one person (well if he wanted the space you can afford it in Laurel. But it had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and it got renovated from 3 bedrooms to 2 bedrooms, as one bedroom was made a massive closet, and 2 bathrooms became one full bathroom and a powder room. Also the client complained about stairs and living space on a lower level in the second house tour yet the house that was purchased had a basement or lower level and if using the garage you would have to use the staircase to walk up to the main living level.
Other than the previous observations, I liked the renovation. Erin knows how to use paint to update the curb appeal. I really do like how they updated the front entry, living, and dining room for modern living. Luv'ed the kitchen, the blue tile backsplash and the island. That was a huge kitchen so the lack of upper cabinets was not going to compromise any storage. I did like what Erin and Ben did in the den and master bedrooms and closet. Saving the intercom radio was a nice touch. I still am confused as to the bathroom makeover. The master bathroom looked as if it had enough space for a separate soaker tub, shower, vanity, and toilet I was confused as to the configuration they kept and that it looked as if they went from a 2 bathroom house to a 1.5 bathroom house, especially for a house with that square footage.

At Home With The Fords - March 2 or 3, 2021
A married couple buy a Victorian across the street from their cousins, and want a Swedish minimalistic feel to their home. I think this was a repeat. I have nothing against using handmade tile, or going minimal, using neutral tones, and natural tones. However I don't like how Leanne uses them. She was SO proud of the main bathroom that had a wall of emerald green handmade tile. Leanne emphasize the manmade imperfect look of the tiles. I liked the color of the tiles. I HATE, HATE, HATE, sloppy workmanship. The tiles are not lined up and the grout is so sloppy I would want my money back for such inexpert work. Just YUCK. While I liked the curved stove hood again it looked sloppy and ill put together. Then there was the vomit colored paint on the walls. Well on part of the walls. Then they had these really low, low, low chairs. If you are having a wine and cheese party there is no way you are getting out of those chairs. While I liked the teal colored walls in the mudroom and the matching painted chairs the checkerboard painted floors had such crooked lines that Leanne was so proud off that I just couldn't think of any cutting thing to say. I don't mind vintage or flea market style or farmhouse style or cottage style Leanne makes all those styles look as if she only hired 3 years as her crews. I just don't understand how this woman has a fan base.

Farmhouse Fixer - Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot - March 3, 2021
Jonathan Knight when not on tour with the New Kids On The Block renovates old farmhouses. The house in the pilot was build in 1783 and is located in Hollis, NH. I liked what they did to the house and how they respected the original materials. Using posts from the old barn to case door openings as well as building part of the 9 ft island. I liked the ceiling, opening it up, and leaving the wood raw. Luv'ed the granite steps in the front and side entrances. The landscaping was minimal but graces the style of the farmhouse. The chicken wallpaper in the chicken coop is priceless. I would have liked to have seen the upstairs as well.
The bathroom in this house is the proper way to use irregular/handmade subway tile, Leanne Ford needs to take note as well as how the wood elements are incorporated meshing the old and the new.

My favorite things were the stove hood and the mudroom; the color and glass doors were great, and while I know that the checkerboard floor lines were crooked I found that a bit charming (unlike the tiles, which just looked kinda sloppy).

I just got to see Rock the Block, episode 1 on demand. So much fun! Four brand new houses, and four teams of two HGTV celebs to customize the houses. This episode renovated the kitchens. I really liked all four kitchens. I thought David and Tiffany won, because they changed the layout and brought in the view and light. But that’s just my preference. I won’t divulge the winner. 😁

I won’t divulge the winner. 😁 I do think all four teams had some great elements. Mika and hubby's hidden pantry was great, the lack of dinning space not so much. I did like their backsplash. Nate and Jeremiah were very high end and the entire space was united but those brass shelving units just were not practical and took up space on the counters. That and the faux leather countertops. Really how long will those last? My favorite kitchens were David and Tiffany's and Alison's and Mikes. I liked that D&T flip flopped the kitchen and dining areas. I luv'ed the jewel tone of the cabinets. I luv'ed having windows over looking the pond but why did you put shelving across those windows and then put stuff on those shelves. It defeated the entire purpose of having a view. Luv'ed Alison's kitchen. Mike proved a good balance and partner for her. Of the four teams I think Alison and Mike were the most creative with the chicken wire, the mason jars, the subway tile and faux leather. After all they made three items.

Rock the Block - I pretty much liked all the kitchens! I could have done without the brass shelving N&J used, though. I winced when I saw the green color D&T used on the cabinets, but once everything was done it was gorgeous. I'm glad Mike talked Alison out of painting that brick, it was beautiful as is and there was no need to paint it white like she wanted. I'm also glad Alison realized that her heavy black and brass Chicago style didn't fly in California and won't work in Georgia, either. I caught a before and after clip of At Home With the Fords and it looked like she just sprayed everything white once again. Bleah.

Did they say who won on Rock the Block? Did my PVR cut it off?
I know the dining area was smaller on the white kitchen but loved it. Of course I only have a very small kitchen table right now. If I can fit a 6 person table there I would love it.
The extra window on the flipped kitchen would be nice but what did they do with the pantry room. They don’t look like they don’t have much in storage either because no upper cabinets.
The brick one was really nice but the rest was a let down.
I usually like what Nate does but not this so much. How would you keep that wooden island clean. Didn’t like the brass shelves either. I was with the judges normal home owners would hate the messy shelves. Can’t imagine cleaning those glass shelves on a ladder every week.

I'm really enjoying the team aspect of Rock the Block and liked different aspects of each kitchen.
Mika and Brian: Even though it was a white kitchen it was well balanced out by the gray and white countertops and the backsplash. I absolutely LOVED that hidden pantry; so roomy, so practical! Yes, the dining room was small, but in all honesty do people really have big dining rooms anymore?
David and Tiffany: Their look was a lot of fun. They completely changed the blueprint of the house by flipping the kitchen, giving the person washing dishes a marvelous view of the woods in back of the house. While they got points taken off for having a green kitchen I loved it because not all of us like or want white kitchens! They also added a huge window in the dining room, adding more natural light and adding a view. Overall, it's very nice and one of my fav kitchens.
Nate and Jeremiah: They have some sort of cozy British country cottage thing going on because while they were preparing the kitchen they also were tuckpointing the outside of the house with brick. The finished kitchen was very elegant, and while aesthetically pleasing to the eye was not one of my favs. This is very much an "upper middle class couple--no kids, no pets" type of kitchen; the brass hanging shelving units, while nice, will be a pain in the ass to clean every day. Then again, the owners of a kitchen like this would have some sort of help to come in and clean (who will silently curse them as they are cleaning those shelves). I liked the cabinets with the chicken wire insets though. I hope Jeremiah relaxes during the run of the show because he was completely stressed out.
Alison and Holmes: Not gonna lie, but I would totally watch a show with the two of them renoing houses because I thought they made a great team. Alson made the magic happen, while Holmes gave her solid advice on whether certain things were possible or not. I'm really glad that he put his foot down about painting that brick stove niche because it looked fabulous without it and I despise painted brick in interiors, and I love how while Alison was initially hesitant about it she decided to give his idea a go and really liked it. Loved the stove and the homey feel of the kitchen; it looks kinda expensive, yet you could see an entire family in it cooking and socializing. This was my fav kitchen.
I have to say I really liked what all the teams did with the wildcard materials, with a special shout out to Alison and Holmes melting down the jars to create a bowl out of them.

I loved it! So tired of all white kitchens. I used to luv an all white kitchen as I fell my only other option was wood or a dark brown cabinet. Over the years I have changed my mind. I do like white kitchens with a pop of color, either in the island or lower cabinets. I would not mind a black kitchen depending on the light and location. I do like a mix of cabinets colors and don't mind a mix of wood grain, a color and white. Several of Alison's kitchen have changed my mind in what I like to see in a kitchen. I do feel her best work regarding kitchens are in condos or the smaller apartments she has done.

Am I the only one who liked the green kitchen? While green is not my favorite color I appreciate what David and Tiffany did. It was hard to see what exact shade of green it was as it looked more teal on my tv screen. I liked they went outside the box. Best lines, "farmhouse is so done" or somewhat to that effect. I luv'ed how both David and Tiffany dissed farmhouse style multiple times, are Joanna Gaines ears burning.
