Home Town Takeover - Season 1 Episode 2 - "The Mayor Is Also the Barber" - May 9, 2021
Big Fish House - outside - old rotted siding replaced, fresh coat of paint. Front porch, rotted boards replaced, fresh paint. Front side walk clean, also front stone steps from drive way. There was a lot of structural work between the first and second floor. All the old drywall stripped. The front hall, the staircase, living room/front parlor basically cleaned up all the old drywall, new scones, fresh paint, new stairs, it all looked great. The biggest change was in the dining room and kitchen with the wall separating the two taken down. They were able to vault the ceiling in the kitchen/dining room. I loved that the owner liked color and it was green, blue, and yellow. Toned down but it was a great kitchen.
The barber shop was also done. The mayor is also the barber. I loved that they took down years and years of renovations and the space went from this squat tiny area to this huge space. The brick wall, the reclaimed wood wall, the navy blue, the arched window they uncovered and restored was amazing. Luv'ed the blue leather chesterfield couch. That is a total makeover. I also liked that they kept the feel vintage with the barbershop chairs. The shadow boxes with the old barbershop tools was a really nice touch.
Extra: On Wetumpka's busiest street they organized a paint your front door party.
Home Town Takeover is also a showcase of HGTV's stars and their shows and they are also showcasing some new stars that may only be seen on Discovery +. Wendall Holland the host of Hot Mess House (Discovery +) shows up to help with the Big Fish house. He also won Survivor Ghost Island.

Home Town Takeover - the barber shop looked SO much better when they were done! Whoever covered up that brick and put carpet in there (?!) needs a smack in the head. The Fish House looked great too, the staircase and kitchen were definite improvements. I liked the dusty blue and yellow on the cabinets...the bright green, not so much. I wish we could do the door painting thing in my neighborhood, some of these houses need it.

That barbershop was so small and claustrophobic as if every time there had been a remodel it just got smaller and smaller. I do agree about the green trim in the Fish House dining area. If it was a more muted tone like the blues and yellows it would have worked better.

No Demo Reno - the bathroom in that first house had to be one of the weirdest layouts ever. An open tub with a toilet on either side? Not awkward at all. Adding Craftsman trim on the windows and doors was a good idea, and the tile in the kitchen and bathroom was really nice. The second house was a definite improvement also. Flip or Flop - I guess my idea of mid-century modern is nothing like Christina's. And that kitchen was SO dark, I hated it. But of course a hundred people got into a bidding war and they made $160K off that thing. Psh. Thumbs up to the tile guy who cut those patterns in the shower though, I could never. I missed that season 11 of Flip and Flop started and had to go ON Demand and catch episode 1 and 2. Episode 1 - Fifties Flip - Apr 30, 2021 - Christina chose a quilt type pattern for the kitchen backsplash and then used in on the back of the kitchen peninsula - how the heck is that mid-century modern? Episode 2 - Filthy Flip - May 7, 2021 - was the mid-century type house with two to three unpermitted add-ons that had to be demoed and the aluminum roof that needed to be replaced and had no plywood sheathing or underlayment. This is the one that had the dark grey slab cabinets in the kitchen and they complained was so dark. Episode 3 - Smelly Time Capsule - May 14, 2021 - I liked the backsplash tile it was blue with a embossed triangle pattern in the middle and they used the white version in the master bathroom shower stall. Made an obscene profit around $160,000. Overall Christina likes that farmhouse look and even when she does a mid-century modern she puts in farmhouse style into the project like the kitchen backsplash. Sometimes I don't think those two know what style trend is what and it looks as if they have been mixing them up a bit, which ends up looking a bit off.

Flip or Flop - I really liked the blue tiles she used for the backsplash with the white cabinets (and the white ones in the shower). I'm just glad to see ONE kitchen that wasn't all white/gray/black with those same old geometric patterned tiles. No Demo Reno - every time I see a pony wall or tiered countertop, I know she's going to get rid of it. Amazing how much more modern that first house looked once the golds and browns were painted over.

However it amazed how much paint and new carpet can change a room. It is nice to see rooms that are basically the same and no walls knocked down. I really appreciate both No Demo Reno and Bargain Block and $50,000 Three Ways, as all the shows are taking limited budgets (all around $50,000) and showing that you can change the house, the flow and the look of a place for that much and not knock all the walls down. I luv Jen's bathrooms and getting rid of all of those corner bathrooms and replacing them with usable stand alone bathtubs.

I luv Jen's bathrooms and getting rid of all of those corner bathrooms and replacing them with usable stand alone bathtubs. She is really good at bathrooms, I agree. Hardly anybody uses those massive tubs, a large shower with a stand alone tub is much nicer and more practical. A friend of mine redid their bathroom and put in one of those huge jetted tubs...and they don't even use it. But it sounded like a good idea at the time.

Home Town Takeover - Season 1 Episode 3 - Longest Bar in Alabama - May 16, 2021
I liked the renovation of Coach's Corner the restaurant that over looks the river and has a patio over the gorge. I liked that it was not a total renovation just of the outside (it was a former grocery store) and enclosing the outside patio with floor to ceiling glass walls. I did note they foam insulated the original metal ceiling which will help the new AC keep that portion of the restaurant cool. Having a bar counter against the glass wall was genius, you are paying for the view. The inside of the rest of the restaurant was OK but I liked the paint job Erin gave to the outside and it would attract customers and let them know it was a restaurant. Overall this renovation was a real win.
I liked how Ella, the only female police officer in Wetumpka, had her home made over. Removing a tree, adding some board and batten siding, some planter beds, and painting the front door a light blue as well as the shutters transforms the front of this house. I did like overall layout of the house it was nice and neat. I also liked the backyard project of getting rid of the old rotted deck, pouring a concrete patio, adding a pergola, stringing up some lights, and adding a build in grill, it adds a outdoor room, and entertainment. As for the interior of the home Erin basically painted the walls and trim white, put in newer furniture and moved the kitchen from the middle of the house toward the back. By simply closing up a side door and replacing it with a window and running the kitchen all the way to the back wall totally transforms the space. It went from a U shape to an L shaped kitchen. I like the pale yellow cabinets and vent hood. The colors do make the house feel like a cottage.
The extra project was fun. I guess the local Economy Board wants to help small businesses start up and they provided a small popup store front made from a shipping container. Again the shipping container received a paint job, and some outdoor seating letting people know it was a place to be.
Projects Done:

Episode 2 3. Fish House - house 4. Jerry's Barber Shop - business Extra - painted front doors houses Wetumpka busiest street
Episode 3 5. Coach's Corner - business 6. Ella Roberts - house Extra - popup shop currently used for Gracie's Sweet Goods - the premise is to provide a temporary store front for a small business starting up.

Home Town Takeover - what a waste, having that balcony on the river and not using it! Now everyone can sit out there and enjoy the view - and they can still open the windows when the bugs and weather aren't ridiculous.
Miss Ella's house was adorable when they finished, more of a proper cottage look than that boring builder grade stuff. Nice landscaping and back yard, too. The shipping container/popup shop was really creative.

Can you imagine having brunch there on a Sunday or how about any of the holidays. I would luv that.

No Demo Reno - I loved both houses afterwards, but especially those muted turquoise cabinets in the second house...gorgeous. Jenn is really good at kitchens and bathrooms. And she loves some fancy tile. Flip or Flop - nothing really stood out to me inside the house when they were done, but I do remember those water globes the landscaper put in the back yard. Really cool. I wonder if that one ever sold...?

Really cool. I wonder if that one ever sold...? I liked the turquoise cabinets, and the backsplash tile. I was very surprised to see they way they painted the kitchen cabinets for painting. I though you had to sand them to get rid of the finish and to degrease them and remove the doors. That just seemed kinda weird, I mean they spray painted the cabinet hardware. Jenn does a great job of picking tile for her bathrooms. As for Flip or Flop, the scope of the project was huge. While the kitchen looked good is it really practical to have all open shelving like that? The view was phenomenal. The finished landscaping divine. The sunken deck, the lighted steps, the fire pit and water feature. Those glass globes, I am in luv. However, my pet peeve with Christina's design style/sense is that it is mainly blah. The master bathroom was a prime example of Christina's blah style. Very expensive tile. (Don't know why it looked like crappy concrete.) Maybe in person it looks better but it looks like pale grey tile and looks like nothing. In fact it looks as if the bathroom needs to be redone. If you put the Jenn bathroom next to the Christina bathroom, Jenn looks as if a professional designer did it and Christina's looks as if the home owner did it. Not a good look for a 1.3 million dollar home.

Home Town Takeover: Sometimes people decide to stop at a restaurant based on how it looks from the outside. With that said, Erin and Ben did a lovely reno of the exterior of Coach's Corner. What would have been a cherry on top is if they screened off the balcony area so the view could be enjoyed longer in the year. The view was amazing, and I liked the glass enclosed patio too. I hope this attracts new business for them. Miss Ella's cottage renovation was so lovely and cozy! It reminded me so much of the cottages you see in children's books where Miss Goose with the bonnet is baking a apple pie for her good friend Mrs Frog who will be over for tea later. A little on the small size, but somehow, just right. Everything Erin did for the cottage was perfect for its size and layout. Loved the yellow cabinets in the kitchen and the cleanup of the front yard foilage, landscaping, and paint job made the cottage look fantastic. They are especially good at making small changes for maximum impact and they did it here. I'm glad they showed the pop up space in the shipping container because they are getting more popular these days; they are made for people who are growing out of "I have a sweet side gig selling tamales out of my garage" but don't have the money quite yet to get a storefront. There are neighborhoods here that have a couple of blocks set aside for these shipping container businesses and they do quite well and are considered an asset, especially with the small farmers selling fruits and vegetables in the pop ups in areas where there are food deserts. There's another shipping container shopping mall in a quite upscale area near me that has everything from fashion designers first starting out, to artisans, to people selling jewelry and more upscale treats and going through the mall is a lot of fun. I hope these centers get more popular; the rents are reasonable and are in areas that guarantee foot traffic.

Home Town Takeover Season 1 Episode 4 - "Say Yes to Wetumpka" - May 23, 2021
Erin and Ben renovate the local Civic Center, The Rose house, the family helps local kids and runs the Tomahawks Basketball Team. As a surprise, Randy from Say Yes To The Dress has a guest appearance.
I do admire that Erin and Ben are applying what they did in Laurel to Wetumpka, as far as giving local businesses facelifts and letting people know they are there and available. I liked the little tidbit that companies used to advertise themselves by painting the building and putting large lettering on the outside walls to let people know who they are.
The local Civic Center looked like a new building. A paint job, lettering, clean up the landscaping and what looks like new gravel in the parking lot. Amazing was a bit of paint does on the interior of the building as well as updated lighting. The new kitchen looked adorable as did the emerald green cabinets and peninsula. The new French windows added so much light to the building and the new patio and outdoor spaces added so much entertainment space.
The Rose family helps kids in the neighborhood have a place to hangout, do homework, and play basketball. The house was in good shape, it also needed a facelift. Painting the outside, removing the curlicues from the wrought iron railing, wrapping the posts, and removing the awning, refreshing the landscaping and voila you have a new house. Erin's kitchen's are great. Liked the floor, and the khaki colored cabinets. I do like that they refreshed the outdoor basketball court.

Home Town Takeover - that dumpy old civic center sure did look like a new place when they were done. Really nice. And I want a trellis bench like that!
I was hollering noooo! at the TV when they started painting the brick yellow on the Rose family's house - but it ended up looking great with the blue-gray porch and wrapped posts. The kitchen and living room redo was fantastic. Mina didn't seem to be there for very long...

Really pulled the design together. I think a yellow house can be a hard color to pull off. Many times when Erin has suggested a color palette I automatically think "Oh, No" but I am always pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I did like that kitchen. The only kitchen of Erin's I didn't like was the Fish House kitchen and it was the very bright green they used as a trim color in the dining area that just was too much, otherwise the kitchen was another success story.

No Demo Reno - really interesting mid century modern house with one of the weirdest bathrooms I've ever seen. Looked great afterwards but I wish she'd put that hideous old bidet in the trash instead of perching it on the pool ledge with flowers in it. Flip or Flop - dark cabinets in the kitchen again, but this time they looked nice and not cave-like. I wouldn't exactly call it southwestern, but it was cute. I wish she'd stop using that boring, dull gray tile in the bathrooms, though. I hate it. All the pretty tile in the store and you pick THAT? Looks like another season of Christina on the Coast starts next week. Meh.

The bathroom layout was strange but the space was so huge I wish they had completely gutted it. I do understand they didn't because of the budget but that space was incredible. I did like the emerald green cabinets. I was disappointed that Jenn did not include more shower sprays or a hand sprayer in the shower, it had the space. Flip or Flop - I do agree with all the tile choices available Christina's choices mostly disappoint. I did like the fireplace, stuccoing the hearth and mantle and painting the brick black was a very good choice. I did like the cabinets, which where a black with a bit of the wood grain or brown showing. That description may not sound appealing but it looks good. Considering how bad the outside of the house looked the team did a good job of updating it.

Home Town Takeover:I was glad that the Civic Center got a makeover because it was dim inside and looked very unloved, while you couldn't even tell what it was from the outside; the only signage looked more like a funeral home than a community hub. When Erin finished it looked so light and airy, with ample seating, and the kitchenette looked like something that could be used as opposed to an after thought. The backyard of the property with the trellis seating also looked amazing. I especially loved the signage on the side of the building as its a nod to how businesses advertised in the 20-50s and is now preserved as "ghost signs." www.ephemerasociety.org/ghost-signs/I have to admit that like the rest of us I was like "Hmmm" at the color combos Erin used in the Rose house but it looked fabulous once it was done, both inside and out. I see those Color Theory classes did not go to waste from college! Since they do so much for the communities youth I'm glad that their kitchen, living room, porch, and outdoors rec area got a reno as well.

Home Town Takeover Season 1 Episode 5 - A Little Spark Can Go a Long Way - May 30, 2021
This was an intense episode including the leaders of the community theater's home and shed as well as the main street of Wetumpka.
I like how Erin and Ben painted Shaina and Elizabeth's a nice dark blue and restored the craftsman elements, mainly the front porch columns, and front door. The new porch railings were a plus. The main renovation hit the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Talk about color saturation from a burnt pumpkin, to a soft green to a bright blue. I do appreciate that the opening between the living and dining room was enlarged to the max. I do like a blue and white kitchen and this one looked fabulous. Since Shaina and Elizabeth have cast readings and parties at their home this renovation opened up the entire first floor for that purpose. I also like that Erin and Ben were able to renovate the shed into a proper workspace to use for making theater props.
Company Street, the main street in Wetumpka finally is getting a face lift. This is what we have been waiting for. I do like that Erin and Ben are applying the lessons they learned from revitalizing Laurel to Wetumpka. It was as simply as power washing the side walks, painting all the storefronts on both sides of the street, taking down boarded up areas, removing the old electric poles and lines that were no longer in use. Painting the awnings or replacing them, putting up new signage even in the stores that were not occupied, putting up string lights all along the street, and creating a little parkette seating area in one of the parking spaces, adding planters and hanging plants. Making people want to come take a walk down the street.

Christina on the Coast - while the finished product was a lot better than what they started with, it looked about as Spanish/modern hacienda as I do. And I'm Irish. *shrug*
She's really been favoring those white tiles with the little lines on them recently.

Lets face it if it isn't white on white on white with a little bit of black Christina is not interested.

Has anyone seen the new show called Frozen In Time? Last night I happened upon it and saw episodes 3 and 4. Maureen McCormick was kind of annoying and too cutesy. www.hgtv.com/shows/frozen-in-time

Home Town Takeover: I've really enjoyed this series and its focus on making a lot of small changes for maximum effect. I could imagine what the outside market would look like with a lot of vendors and it's in a nice scenic area with the river right there. Wetumpka also seems like it has a LOT of those "Mrs. Goose" cottages because they renovated another one this week and the outside was beautiful; I really love the sage they painted the house with, and that bright pop of red from the door was chef's kiss.
I didn't comment on last week's episode but it had the same focus. It's amazing what steamwashing the sidewalks and a fresh coat of paint on older buildings can do to a underused area. It made the whole area look more inviting and a lot of the properties were rented out as a result, and the store people and artisans who already were there benefitted from the extra traffic and better-looking digs. They also hung up party lights on the street so they can have night events in the summer. Overall, I like what Erin, Ben, and the rest of the HGTV people who helped out did for this town and I'm really hoping with the show being aired now that they get a lot of tourist traffic, especially with places opening up now due to vaccines.

Eastcoastmom - l saw frozen in time! The epi saw was a 50s house in Laguna Beach. The lot was fabulous. The house was a lot of roof and not my style. I like how they transformed the house. I wasn’t too keen on the Brady Bunch house references. Maureen found a vintage giraffe for the renovated home and recalled how she won a stuffed giraffe at a fair and brought it to the Brady bunch house as a prop and never got it back. I needed to know this because?

Home Town Takeover Season 1 Episode 6 - Blooming on the Coosa – June 6, 2021- season finale
The last house to be renovated was the Cain Sisters House now owned by the Harrison family. It is the oldest building in Wetumpka, the original house had two more houses added on to it. Erin and Ben worked their magic on the first floor and improved the flow and function of the living room, dining room, kitchen, as well as the first floor bathroom, which is basically the 3 Harrison girls bathroom.
On the outside of the house, powerwashing the house, adding a porch railing, changing the front door, and painting the porch ceiling, and adding some landscaping and the “old lady” has a nice facelift.
Erin and Ben do what they do best, update old homes to the way modern day families use them but retaking the character and history of the home.
While it was the dream of Chip and Stephanie Harrison to renovate and update the Cain Sisters home it has been 16 years and doing ongoing projects on the weekends and missing family time with their girls, you could see the relief their on their faces when Erin and Ben announced they were updating their home.
Bathroom, replace rotted floor joists, and subfloor, new vanity (it’s a double sink), new floors, new toilet, new bath. New wall color. So happy for the 3 Harrison girls.
The other renovation was updating the front living room, creating a library and homework area for the girls, opening the casing between the dining and living rooms, and totally changed the look and feel of the kitchen. Luv’ed the kitchen, the color of the cabinets was supposed to be robin eggs blue but looked rather aqua on my TV screen. But they were beautiful. I do think on these older homes that have 9, 10 and 11 foot ceilings the addition of stacked cabinets just adds to the renovation and creates these sense of space.
What is the wow factor on this project is the choice of color, the living room is a saturated dark blue, the dining room is light and airy (white I think) and then the kitchen cabinets. It is always a color story with the Home Town renovations.
Erin and Ben didn’t renovate a business as they have in other episodes, however they created a business venue by creating a farmers market across the river from Coaches Corner and on the site where the tornado entered the town.
The extra was adding the Blooming on the Coosa on the side of Coaches Corner restaurant. I did wonder when they did the renovation of Coaches Corner why they didn’t clean up that side of the building and now I know why. I did notice that they did not cut the vines down to the ground on the pillars holding up the building and I can see that being a maintenance issue.
Overall I enjoyed the series and the concept and I truly hope this can help this small town. There will be a follow up episode next week showing behind the scenes stuff, and how Erin and Ben helped renovate Laurel.

I caught a few episodes of Bargain Block this morning - definitely different! I wouldn't say I love all the crazy colors and designs, but it's a nice change from white/gray everything. And apparently it works well in the neighborhoods they focus on.

New Show Alert:Apparently, the good folks at HGTV are as tired of white subway tile and light grey everything as the rest of us are. They are currently casting for a new show for homeowners with a unique point of view who are "quirky" and like color. The "gotcha" catch is you have to live within 2 hours of L.A. which is unfortunate as I think they would have more luck with casting in other areas of the country. I'm looking forward to this! jscasting.com/homeowners-for-high-noon-entertainment/
