I wasn't a big fan of the muddy avocado kitchen in Hometown this week either. Maybe a white/cream upper cabinet would have toned it down. Bleah. Now the laundry room cabinet color was nice, and I loved the sunroom and game table that Ben made. Did they not show a bathroom this time?
I vote for plain islands, too. No cooktop or sink taking up space, please.

They showed the old kitchen turned into the new laundry room, the old family room turned into the new kitchen and small family room, and the sunroom turned into the new family room game room. I really liked the old kitchen cabinets that they painted black or a very dark charcoal for the new laundry room, they looked brand new.

Hilary's Tough Love - I love tough Hilary! She knocked some sense into this family that had to move from Germany and shook the guilt out of them long enough to accept her design ideas, which were great for that old house. Although, looking at the way they live, I was surprised that they had $175K to blow on renovations. And you just know that mother is going to start hauling all her old junky furniture (and that barrel) back into the house, piece by piece. I don't think Hilary's therapy will be permanent on her. Something was 'off' about the mom. I just had the feeling that all her 'histrionics' over being so overwhelmed and feeling so sad that her children had to move so suddenly from Germany and having to give them their own special space, was just a gimmick for her to be on television. When questioned by Hilary about how they were doing and how they felt about the move, the children said they were fine. I can understand that the move was rushed and there was very limited housing stock in their preferred area, but they had a very healthy $175,000 budget and I'm sure they could have gotten any contractor to work on their home. Plus, they definitely were not hurting for money as they decided to leave the construction zone and stay at their beach home. I think the husband had been working overseas for the Army Corps of Engineers, so I assumed he was making a pretty decent salary. The wife was just attached to her furniture, which had been handed down from family members and I don't think it was for lack of funds that they furnished their home in that way. I don't know, the mom just bugged me. Plus, there's only a finite amount of space and I'm guessing the budget wasn't enough to make some sort of rec room for the kids in the basement. I liked almost everything Hilary did except I didn't think the family room/living room was functional at all. They are a family of 5. Hilary got rid of the large sectional, yes, but replaced it with a smallish sofa. I think there were two additional uncomfortable looking chairs. It certainly looked nicer but lacked adequate seating, imo.

Hilary got rid of the large sectional, yes, but replaced it with a smallish sofa. I think there were two additional uncomfortable looking chairs. It certainly looked nicer but lacked adequate seating, imo. Considering that they bought a 110 year old home I have a feeling that the electrical and plumbing and HVAC in the entire house had to be updated and for $175,000 they kids bedrooms better have been done. This family was not hurting for money not with a $175,000 budget and a "beach" residence. I wonder if the basement could be renovated or if the ceiling was too low and it would need to be dug out. I can't believe the mom held onto all that junk furniture and moved it from the US to Germany and back. You could tell the husband was OK if it all went to the curb. I think the mom was way overthinking everything, with a touch of hoarder thrown in. Does no one in that family know how to make a bed?? I did think in that master closet area that Hilary created there was room for one more set of closet organizers on the corner wall next to the master bathroom door. The finished product was very nice. That kitchen looked great. Hilary added functionally to that mudroom area. I do have to agree with the family room/kid's den needing a slightly larger sofa. In regards to the mom's reaction being fake. I have a sister-in-law that behaves just the same and she had taught her daughter, my niece to do the same. For example, I get a phone call from my niece looking for her dad because she has noticed the inspection tags on her car are expired. My niece went into this huge tirade that she can't drive the car, if she does the police with give her a ticket, arrest her, she won't be able to drive to work on an expired tag, it will go on her permanent driving record, yelling hysterically at her dad to fix it and this is late Saturday afternoon and nothing can be done until Monday. This is really nothing to get excited about it is something that needs to be put on your weekly To Do List. My niece went on and on and on about this for several minutes and we just had to wait for her to finish before we could even talk to her. So yes, I do believe the mom in this episode really behaves that way and it is normal for her and frustrating to those around her.

Fixer to Fabulous: Jenny Marrs, you really missed the boat by not making the faux dormer window an "eyebrow" window. It would have matched the front door and is an original Cotswold cottage feature.

Double dose of Flip or Flop last night - at least everything wasn't gray and white. Did I actually see green on the walls as an accent in the first house? I loved the dimensional octagon tile they used in the second house, it had kind of a mother of pearl sheen to it. Nice.

I googled the second house in Costa Mesa and they did sell that in NOV 2021 for 1.5 MIL. Geez after lifting the house and all the work done on it to see at the end it was still for sale......glad they were able to finally sell it. I could not believe the first house .... it was like a family was living in it and then one day they just walked out the door to never return for anything AT ALL. I have been liking this Season. Tarek and Christina are getting along very well and NOTHING so far with Tarek's new wife or yachts ... that I am not interested in the least.

Hometown: This show does a good job at showing Ben and Erin help not only people new to Laurel but also long-time residents who want to further invest in the community by either buying a home or putting money into property they already own. This week focused on the building inspector they use to sign off on all the jobs they do for the show; she had saved up a nice chunk of change to invest further into her property and wanted Ben and Erin's help. After going through the house Erin decided it would be best to focus on the areas of the house with the most traffic; the kitchen, living room, and sunroom, as well as getting another roof and exterior improvements (which took up a third of the budget). By lightening the brick outside and using dark paint on the wood panels and new shutters the outside looked very sleek after Erin finished with it. The living room was casual but still nicely painted and decorated, and the little kitchen was adorable. Ben took her owner's old dining room table and fancied it up to use in the dining nook (along with built-in banquet seating). I like how Erin and Ben don't repeat design motifs in their work; every single one of their rehabs have been as unique as they are.

Hometown Season 5 Episode 19 - One Space At A Time - January 16, 2021 House Stats: Built: 1975 Sq Ft: 1700 3 Bedrooms 2 Bathrooms Bought 2 years ago for $80,000 Renovation Budget: $60,000 Outside Renovation: $20,000 - new roof, new door, new shutters, new shutters. There is major ponding issue with water on the driveway. Inside Renovation: $40,000 - option 1 - public spaces, new engineered hardwood floors, scape popcorn of roof, new ceiling fan, new lighting, paint walls, refresh dining and living room, install banquet seating, new kitchen cabinets new flooring, new refrigerator. $40,000 - Option 2 - refresh hall bathroom, master bathroom, all three bedrooms. Hated the brown siding before and after. It looked really ragged in areas. It needed to be painted or stained just to protect it. Glad that Erin had the brick painted the cream color was needed to balance that awful heavy brown. In this case I am very happy that Erin added the shutters and new door in that light olive avocado green. Liked the new flooring, wall paint color, recessed lights, and new ceiling fan. I liked what they did with the kitchen, those looked like some high end kitchen cabinets with some really nice accessories.

Hilary's Tough Love - January 17, 2021
Hilary knows how to create flow in a home and how to stretch a $55,000 budget. The finishes and quality that woman produces is amazing. This time she creates a new kitchen and flow between an old dining room, the kitchen, and family room. The final result appears as if rooms have all grown in size especially the new kitchen and new dining area.
Liked that they also finished the mother's ADU (additional dwelling unit or mother-in-law suite).

Hilary worked her magic again, but the one thing this show is missing is a revisit to the home a few months later. Part of the point of the show is for Hilary to break families of their bad habits in addition to improving their homes. We don't get to see whether it stuck, or if some of them fell back into their old habits... or in the case of this family, if the reno didn't turn out to be the magic bullet that cured their unhappiness.
Mom is there because she has no choice. Maybe she'll feel better about it with her nice new suite, but I saw some deep resentment between those two women at that tea table. Also I'm wondering if the family is using the dining room, or if they're just eating at the kitchen bar and there's another puzzle on the dining room table right now...
But overall, another good episode.

Flip or Flop - I can't believe they ruined that pretty herringbone brick walkway by globbing gray paint all over it. I've been wanting one just like that instead of the boring concrete walk that I have now. *cries*
I can't even remember too many specifics about the house except that it was done in the usual HGTV grayscale, except for the beige tile she used in the one shower that didn't really go with the gray tile right next to it. No shade in the back yard, either.

I could understand painting the planters but not the steps or walkway. I must admit they have been using some gorgeous tile in the last several episodes. I liked the backsplash in the kitchen which was a hexagon tile with a nice flower pattern on it that looked really nice. They used a textured hexagon tile for the floor to ceiling backwall in the master shower. Luv'ed that tile it looked so good.

I didn't mind the planters but they should have used brick stain instead of paint if they wanted a gray tone, it would look 1000 times better. They have been using some nice tile. I don't know what stores they have out there but I could spend an entire afternoon in Floor and Decor poking around all the tile.

Don't know but I am so loving the products and how they are using them. I must admit I do like some of the Hollywood bling stuff, the combination of marble and gold or brass, it looks stunning.

How can that be? i might live in a state where some things cost more, but the appliances alone in that kitchen would cost that much. Add the granite, floor work and the mother in law suite? UNLESS they designers get a huge discount to show the products on tv? These costs seem so very unrealistic.

She seems to do more with less money on almost every episode. My one thought about this week was that she was working in a smaller scale -- just two rooms upstairs and a studio space downstairs.
Yes, she had to create 2 kitchens, but I think all the plumbing was where it needed to be and didn't need extra digging etc. Also, that MIL suite downstairs looked great, but it was TINY. She only needed to buy a sleeper sofa instead of furnishing a living room and bedroom. And I agree, she HAS to be getting discounts that she can't get on Love It/List It for some reason. I can't believe the Northeast is cheaper than North Carolina for real estate and renovations...

The daughter paid Hilary the amount needed to complete the mother's housing which was separate from the $55,000 what she did for the daughter which was a large kitchen plus an enlarged cased opening between the kitchen and living room. Not sure if the furniture is included.

I think the furniture is included in the budget unless otherwise stated (like Fixer Upper who stages the house only but will sell said items to you for an additional fee). I liked the MIL ADU; sure, it was small, but it was the right size for one person and she seemed to love it.

Tarek getting married to wife number two really changed his attitude, plus finding out about his gluten allergy and addressing that.

FLIP or FLOP my only wish was that they went with the BLUE in the kitchen and not that black tile all over the walls. Simply because it is at the beach and I love that theming when the homes are close to the beach. Lordy, he got so many offers and really did awesome selling it. I also love that Tarek and Christina are getting along wonderfully. No one mentions significant others. They are keeping it all about the SHOW.

Home Town - Season 5 Episode 16 - Grand Millennial - January 30, 2021
Note: to add to the confusion the TV Guides and DVRs mark this as Season 6 Episode 5
While I like all the colors used in the home especially the pink kitchen and NO GREEN CABINETS ANYWHERE, I hate the thought of losing a garage. I like the idea of parking my car inside. I store all my gardening stuff in the garage and various dry goods. I like that my car does not get wet in the rain or snow. I like the added security of having a garage especially for a female living alone. I like having a garage so I don't have to hike to the front door with the groceries. Getting rid of the garage is dumb.

I totally agree with you Bearcata. Garages are intended to hold cars. Having to park your car outside in Laurel in July when it's 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity is more than dumb. My cars are always in the garage.

My cars are always in the garage. This too. Keep the heat OFF the car. The more and more I think about it, I don't get the renovation. The house was 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and 2100 sq ft. Obviously the bathrooms are not attached to the bedrooms but this is the ideal first time home owner floor plan, why add a new $40,000 bathroom and lose the garage. I wish they had shown a floor plan maybe that would have explained why the home owner needed a new bathroom. Another pet peeve are the open shelves in the kitchen. It is a small kitchen and you are taking away storage space? Why? Well you are adding storage in the banquet seating bench and you added a pantry by the frig but still all the open storage is a grease and dust trap. I can understand putting an open shelf or two in an awkward space to display some decorative item but I think it is a dumb idea for day to day living unless it is for a big commercial kitchen.

Hometown: One of Lauren's old friends moved back to Laurel and needed a house. I like that she went with the slightly outdated MCM house and it had good bones. Ben going back to her grandfathers barn or whatever that was to get the wood and beadboard to make that fabulous shelving unit for the new bathroom was a great idea. I also want to visit that vintage store Erin always goes to in town because they have some really nice things. This time, they showed that less is more in the living room, as all they did was rearrange their belongings in a thoughtful way and painted. The homeowner was really fond of a more pastel pallette so it was fun watching Erin tackle that. The real magic happened in the kitchen; Erin is a pro at Color Theory because she managed a shade of pink on the cabinets that was almost a neutral and it looked beautiful. I don't mind open shelves as long as that's not the only type of storage in the kitchen. Overall, it was a cozy kitchen and I liked it. The real magic was in the bedroom and bathroom; didn't they reno the bedroom as well? I can't remember but that bathroom was fabulous with a deep teal color on the sink cabinet, clawfoot tub, and giant shower. I'm not sure if I would swap a garage for a bathroom but maybe the garage wasn't that important to them? Bearcata: Discover+ also has this episode listed as Season 6 Episode 5, and I think that's the correct listing. I have no idea why they keep trying to put these episodes with last season.

All they did in the master bedroom was remove the acoustical tile on the ceiling, and then white washed the ceiling wood, they also painted the wood paneling on the walls. The really big expenses were painting the brick, renovating the entry way porch cover, the kitchen and the new bathroom. In regards to the garage most people use it as extra storage but for me hauling groceries from the car that is in the garage is way easier then hauling groceries from and extra 20 feet away.

My husband groaned when they swapped out the garage for a bathroom. To me it seemed like an expensive, unnecessary expense. I was worried about the pink cabinetry, but it really was lovely. I always like a banquette, and the added storage is a bonus. The bookcase made out of the wood from the uncle's house was nice, but I thought placing it in the bathroom was weird. Mississippi is tornado territory, so I think having a car in the garage would be a good thing. We've always had free standing garages, so the ease of pulling into a garage in inclement weather, or bringing in groceries from garage to house, has never been our experience. We also don't keep our cars in the garage b/c my husband is an auto mechanic and he does repairs there and needs room for all his tools of the trade and various machinery. At the very least I hope the homeowner erects a garden shed of some sort. One last comment is about painting the brick that ugly gray. Erin said she wanted a more neutral shade for the exterior, but what could be more neutral than that light colored brick? Now, the homeowner will have perpetual upkeep, painting the brick every so often.

Not having to dig out the car in winter is a blessing. As was using the garage as a huge freezer. I also like locking up my car at night. My sib has had his car windows smashed by the neighborhood kids, and my niece has had her belongings stolen from hers while parked in their driveway. To me a garage is a useful and needful part of the home. I agree with you Eastcoastmom, it makes no sense to add a bathroom in a 3 bedroom 2 bath home unless it was a dedicated half bath/powder room.
